Lighten up. It's for a good cause.

      • +47

If you want to donate, donate directly, instead of through this marketing exercise for Maccas.

        All Proceeds Go to Charity

is pretty much meaningless, how many cents in the dollar exactly? Is it minus all the costs, or the raw sales value?

        • +23

Will you complain on McHappy Day too?

        • +36

You're missing the point, the deal is to get the bottle of sauce, the fact that the proceeds go to charity is just a bonus.

        • +1

By "proceeds", I'm reading all $12 from each sale goes to charity.

They're basically donating a bit under $2M to charity… if I guess a bottle's cost price is around $2, the total damage is pretty much spot on $2M.

          • +26

            @bobbieb: And claim a 2m tax deduction

            • @FutureTech: Implying most people don't donate just to get a tax deduction.

              • +4

@smartazz104: It's a bit different in this case because the company is getting a 2m tax deduction for essentially other peoples donations.

            • -1

@FutureTech: So they shouldn’t donate then?

            • +1

@FutureTech: They still have to claim the $2m as revenue, then an offsetting deduction for the donation.

        • +12

100% of all profits go to charity.
The actual cost of the big mac sauce is no where near the sale, so its a substantial donation.

          • +7

@burgermaniac: That's what they all say , gullible upvoters here will believe it :)

          • @burgermaniac: Which charity

          • -3

@burgermaniac: If all profits go to charity, that means maccas are the middle man forwarding my charitable donation. Being the charitable person I am, I guess I'll purchase 20 bottles, get a receipt and claim my donation from the Tax Man. :D When they run out of bottles, I can then sell them on eBay with a starting bid of $20. Maybe 30 bottles would be better.

            • @Jackamo: Not how it works. If you receive something because of your donation, then you can't claim the donation as a tax deduction.

          • @burgermaniac: 100% of all profits go to charity.

            Exactly.

Profits from the bottles go to the charity - Ronald McDonald House Charities. Ronald McDonald House Charities then deducts their "expenses" and "running costs" before the money ultimately benefits anybody. 2 layers of corporate siphoning along with favourable tax incentives.

            Everyone should donate directly.

            • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Ronald McDonald House is 100% expenses and running costs. They operate lodging for families of critically ill children to stay in when they need treatment away from home so the family can be near their child. How can you be opposed to the money going to that? Like paying for the staff etc. (expenses) is some kind of scam?

              • -2

@darrynj: I'm not sure if you're being oblivious or dense so I'm not going to respond in case I assume the wrong one.

                • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I think it's "oblivious" because I still don't understand your objection. It seems to me that the housing of the stressed families would, in fact, "benefit someone". I'm not sure why you think that is a scam that diverts money from real benefit, nor what you think the real benefit of RMH should be.

        • +2

Hey, Relax Guy, it's all being handled by the Shane Warne Foundation,
          So……..
          in good hands………

      • +2

It's for a good cause tax evasion.

        • +2

Mac get a deduction on "donation", so pretty much 30c per dollar.

    • +1

Cause they're all a poor man's version of the big mac sauce.

    • +2

      It's a good deal for Kevin Rudd…

    • coles sauces is the same one

    • It was posted on OzBargain, so you have to buy it!

  • +9

Props to Mcdonalds taking more donations to charities, I recall last year they sold out the sauce immediately after the release.

    • +1

The donations go to THEIR charity…Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Make of that what you will.

  • +1

is there a list of what the "participating restaurants" are?

  • its not until mchappy day in november, i went to 3 different maccas and none of them have it till then, complete waste of time,

    • The article is worded vaguely

“pick up your bottles in the lead up to McHappy Day”

    • +2

It's definitely not. I picked one up this morning in Melbourne CBD

    • I didn't buy one, but they asked me if I wanted a bottle when I ordered breakfast this morning.

  • +4

If you miss out you can always donate here.

  • -1

What the heck is McHappy Day?

    • +5

Don't know but sounds like it should be a public holiday

      • Red Rooster, Subway and KFC should get onboard… that's 3 extra public holidays. Oh, Hungry Jacks… keeps getting better.

    • It’s a nice bit of tax-dodge marketing.

    • +12

'Ronald McDonald House Charities helped support 57,000 families with seriously ill children.'

But of course you knew what it's actually for….

    • it’s a day when mac donald’s put on a promo and donate proceeds to charities like ronald mcdonald’s house.
other promos they do on other occasions are $1 from each big mac sold, etc.

  • +33

Donate some coin to your favourite charity and buy Coles special burger sauce. Cheaperer and tastes the same.

    • +26

And you get the tax benefit, not Maccas! Everyone wins, especially if you donate some of your tax benefit to the charity!

    • Taste wise I didn't think the Coles sauce was that great. I found the Praise equivalent to be closer to actual Mac sauce. Coles wins on price though.

      • +1

Recently tried the Heinz iteration…idk how close it is to the real thing, but I reckon it's the tastiest store bought one.

        • +1

Have you tried the Aldi one?

          • @Jhonka: Nope, didn't know they made one. Will keep an eye out for it

      • +2

I mix tomato sauce and mustard and it tastes the same to me.

        • +1

The secret is to also add a touch of egg mayo as well.

    • Its cheap and a pretty good knock off actually

    • +4

many charities use paid collectors, seems its a favourite work for back packers , and you don’t see many colleclrors with label “ volunteer collectors”, which paid collectors aren’t allowed to do.

would say most of the proceeds go to charities mc donald’s support, as they already have the network in place as they donate all year round and don’t pay “ chuggers”.

luckily our family doesn’t need things like ronald mc donald house as we live within 8 kms of the children’s hospital, people from rural areas aren’t as lucky,

before people knock the effort, check the charities mc donald’s support and how much of what they raise goes to the charity, rather “ assuming” as that is easier than checking facts.

  • +17

Best of both worlds: (ignore the tax return dependent timing :) )
    1) Donate $12 to the charity of your choice. Using a 30% personal tax rate, tax woman gives you back $3.60.
    2) Buy Coles Special Burger Sauce $2.75
(composed this reply before the one above but reinforces the point)

    • +12

      tax woman lol

  • isn't the recipe incredibly easy to make…?

    • no

    • +2

      Mayonnaise + Gherkins + blender.

  • +1

    Expiry date?

    • According to the other deal it’s about 2-3 months

  • +4

The coles burger sauce tastes nearly identical to the big Mac sauce

  • +6

    RRP. Is not a bargain

  • +5

I was chatty to a preggers mum the other day and she was saying the big mac sauce is all she craves lol.

Looks like I should gift her a bottle

Attack at Big Macs. You don’t have great usage of metaphors I’m afraid to say.

And if you’re going to be that greedy by saving $5 on a Big Mac then you might as well get the Big Mac Sauce for a good cause. Give back to the community dude. that a deal try and learn !

    • +1

if your life is based on waiting for $1 big macs, that is sad, seek counselling and get something more meaningful in your life.

  • +9

This actually encourages people to donate by buying the sauce. How many of these people would normally donate straight to the charity? A very small percentage for sure!

    • Just out of curiosity, is it tax-deductible?

      • The employees above should know. I have no idea.

      • +3

        no

        https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/Ded…

When a gift or donation is deductible
It must truly be a gift or donation – that is, you are voluntarily transferring money or property without receiving, or expecting to receive, any material benefit or advantage in return. A material benefit is an item that has a monetary value.

      • It's tax-deductible for McDonalds. It really only benefits them.

    • +2

We have the option of donating in-store either through the money box placed on most counters, or customers can donate to RMHC through the kiosks by rounding up their total.

I’d say for every 1 in 20 orders, we’d get a round up donation. Not that much; so McDonald’s initiative of the Big Mac Sauce will surely increase donations significantly to RMHC as customers are more inclined towards receiving an actual product whilst also knowing the fact that they are donating too. Win win for both the consumer and charity organisation, as you get around 10-15ml of Big Mac sauce in each 50c tub.

      • I don't know about you, but we give closer to 30-40mL of Mac Sauce in each our tubs

  • +10

    Not a deal or bargain.
