  • Don't purchase using points. You can usually sell points for 1c per point on the classifieds forum.

    • +1

To be fair, at the new discounted points rate it's not the worst use of points and without potential repercussions.

I wouldn't mind 1 year of club membership for the cost of 0 years of club membership though…

In breach of the T&Cs of your account.

To be honest if you are not getting free Qantas lounge already. Your are not flying enough to warrant to get one in the first place. Better spend the money on single pass or restaurant at the airport. Much better food anyway.

    • +2

Would tend to agree. Priority pass is what, $19 a visit? So for a 4 year membership, you'd need to visit the lounge 18 times a year.
Is 9 flights a year enough to qualify for gold status?

      • +5

The only, single, advantage of living in Perth!

        • +2

The only, single, advantage of living in Perth!

          r/murderedbywords material.

      • +2

You can't compare it with Priority pass affiliated lounges.

        • +2

I don't particularly care for either, except on long-haul flights, and I guess because it's free.
But Qantas has had limited or no gluten free options the last few time I visited. So I can have an apple and some rice cakes.
Not sure that warrants $340 a year.

      • Not if you’re flying domestically, no. Not even close.

      • $32 I think?

    • +9

Not necessarily. You can fly SYD-MEL return every fortnight on a discount economy fare and not earn enough status credits for gold status. So it really does depend.

    • +4

Agree, the domestic club lounges are pretty basic for food options - mostly toasties. a cafe or restaurant is going to be a much better option.

      • +11

Arrive in lounge at 12:01pm for a 6pm flight and enjoy unlimited whisky though

        • I got a commiseration pass into the domestic lounge after my 7AM flight was overbooked, and was quite disappointed to find the beer fridge locked.

      • +1

That being said, most cafes/restaurants at airports are total crapfests

        • And expensive as hell…

      • Yeo. Sitting in Melbourne Qantas Club now, it's no better than Perth…and that's pretty rural.

I'm not sure I would have spent $98 to be here….but complimentary, I guess I'm getting a few free drinks.

      • +1

Agreed, they are pathetic. Hell, I have a lifetime Qantas Club membership I bought back in the '90's and 1/2 the time I don't bother even going in any more if travelling domestic. The International Lounges are good.

    • +1

Depends on your situation. If you're doing business travel but also traveling for leisure internationally with a family of four twice a year, Qantas Club is still worth your while. Especially when charged $980 for the 4 years instead of what's quoted in this deal as renewals must be cheaper as they don't include the joining fee! $980 also isn't the real cost as it's tax deductible.

      • Exactly!

    • +3

There's a reason why frequent flyers call it Qantas Pub. Yes the food is a bit plain, but the real value is in the booze.

Qantas Pub does have a reasonable selection of Beer, Wine, Ciders and Spirits which does make up a little for the food (Not enough hot selections).

      • +2

Considering the price of grog in Australia I'd argue that this is actually the highlight rather than the food

    • +1

Unless of course you’re flying Jetstar.

Don’t forget you can take kids & one adult in with you. Even though Jetstar in Melb has moved to T4 and QC is T1, we still rock up 2hrs before hand to get some food, frothy chino’s, etc into the kids.

The other thing is business class checkin for economy flights, SO you can rock up to the counter rather t5hen battle the auto checkin/luggage machines

    • +1

that isn't entirely true. in the past even on lean years of travel it easily became justifiable with just a couple of overseas trips with multiple long connections. Food and drink can easily add up too a couple of hundred dollars in just a single trip if you are stuck in an airports for extended periods.

  • If only one can get in without flying that day… Would make such a good shared office kind of arrangement with free food and drink all day

    • +1

We used to knock up Jetstar boarding passes to show, when flying Tiger. Alas they appear to check via computer these days.

  • +1

If you're flying with Qantas (also with Qantas Code Share with QF number all type of JetStar flights) on International flights it's well worth it. You get an extra 12KG also get to choose seats for free on sale fare tickets. Many unadvertised perks too.

  • +2

In 2006, lifetime membership of QF club was $4200… i thought that was expensive at the time….

    • +9

Scored through work for $2500 back in 2004….

Many a time I’ve drunken more then my airfare on Jetstar flights.

      • Good one lol

      • Amazon Prime the Liver transplant and you're set! XD

    • +1

Got mine in the 90's for $3K. Money well spent, but it felt like a fortune back then.

      • +1

well it kinda was a fortune back then (about $5k in todays money), especially as the lounge wasn't as well appointed and not as many of them, though now obviously I wish I had paid the lifetime, amusingly enough the thing that stopped me back then was the corporate discount I was getting on membership made the $3k seem ludicrous.

        • +1

It was funny; I had to choose between Qantas and Ansett. Phew!

    • +3

In 1995, lifetime membership of QF club was $3000 I think.
I joined ANSETT lifetime membership after 5years they bankrupted.
Lost $3000 for membership fee but diners club offered free lifetime free card fee.

    • I traveled so much in the 2000s that I reached lifetime gold status with Qantas. I now only fly perhaps twice a year. It is a nice perk to have. I had no idea that Qantas Club was so expensive.

      • Sort of the same here, obliterated that 14k in my 20s and now taking life easy. Most of my flying is on alliance partners though, so personally wouldn't value QF club anywhere as highly. If you're a business traveller not flying enough but still a bit on QF/JQ/AA, and have ways to reduce the actual cost to your wallet then by all means, but damn it's expensive.

  • -1

Only for new accounts, not renewals. :-(

    • +1

      I did a renewal earlier. $980 for 4 years!

      • Were you able to renew? Mine is ending only in 2022. Can I still do it?

    • I am getting it for renewal, $980 for 4 years.

      • Yep - same here. $980 or 155,000 points.

        • Were you able to renew? Mine is ending only in 2022. Can I still do it?

          • @amuthan: I thought about it, but haven't bothered. I fly enough at the moment to get gold each year so it's effectively free….

            • @PlasticSpaceman: I see some value with it. Can I still renew even though mine expires in 2.5 years? Every year I run short 100 to 200 SC for Gold. I'm giving up. :P

              • @amuthan: In theory if you pay in advance then the membership is extended. So if you currently have 2.5 years then if you add an extra 4 years then you would have 6.5 years. In my case as I just got gold again, if I got the 4 year membership then (if I never earned enough points to get gold again) then I'd have 5 years of membership. I'd still keep a copy of the receipt etc just in case. ;-)

I feel the pain re just missing out though - a year or so ago I was in the same position, but a month before it expired I got contacted by Qantas and asked if was willing to swap some points to keep gold. Can't remember how many it was, but it wasn't much (compared to paying for the club membership) so I said sure. Sometimes it's worth answering random 'phone calls….

Gold is so much more than just the Qantas club access - eg access to one world lounges - so definitely worth trying to get it. Annoyingly it not longer lets me select exit row seats for free though. First world problems I know, but I'm tall so it makes a big difference in comfort.

                • @PlasticSpaceman: I would fully agree with you. Will give it a try next time since I'm hoping to do some trips next year. It'll be convenient if I have a Gold Membership. Thank you very much for your tip Sir!

  • Any values of QF Club? Is it just accessing the Qantas Lounge?

I have been to the QF Lounge few times from the complimentary invites from Qantas Credit Card
Always feeling its very busy (but do agree there are more selection of foods than Plaza Premier / AMEX lounge in Melbourne)

    • +1

mostly lounge. But also checkin and baggage allowance and you can bring a free guest with you into the lounge.

      • +1

Ah…I see. One dumb question, for QF Club member, can you visit QF lounge if you are not taking QF / Jetstar flights on that day?

        • +1

          no

        • +1

no. you have to be on one of their flights.

          • @gromit: Thanks guys, hm…probably not as good as lounge membership then
While I do put Qantas as my first preference
there are times I am not taking QF / JQ flights
Especially in an overseas round trip

            • @[Deactivated]: yep fair enough. It is a shame places like the Amex lounge are so awful and lmited and we don't seem to have many other options here in Australia (at least if you want both domestic and international).

        • Used to be you could but not for several years now.

  • +2

Qantas Alumni membership for those interested and who are entitled to membership.

    https://www.monash.edu/alumni/benefits/discounts/airline

    • That's a really good deal for those who it applies to

      • If you got your degree at Monash you can join the Alumni program.

    • Anyone know if you can stack the two offers? In other words, get 4 years for $248 + $642, instead of the $1379 it would be through Qantas without the Monash program?

      • +3

If this works, what’s the fastest degree I can do at Monash?

      • +1

Don’t know, "but if you can pull it off then the law society, economics, or political science might give you an honorary degree 😀

  • +2

can u get into qantas lounges if you're flying jetstar?

  • +3

I'm a frequent flyer and I think Qantas Club can be worth it if you fall into the following categories:

    1) You travel for work pretty often, but work puts you up the back of the plane rather than the pointy end. In general, the more frequently you fly and the shorter your flights are, the more valuable Qantas Club is.

    2) You travel with your family several times per year.

    3) You travel internationally enough to value things like priority check-in.

If you do the maths, then with 4 years of membership at $1379, it's around $344 per year. If you do a lot of short haul flights, e.g. let's say MEL-SYD in economy, you only get 10 SCs per flight, so 20 SCs per trip. That means you'll need to fly 700/20 = 35 times per year to get to Gold (or 30 times to renew). Most people just can't do this.

Let's say you travel MEL-SYD 6 times a year, so 12 flights. That's $344/12 = $29 per flight. That's not bad for a meal and a place to sit. You can even take one guest with you, so your colleagues will end up owing you a few coffees you can take them up on when you're back in the office.

That's on top of the benefits you will also get when travelling with your family…etc.

So basically, the long and short of it is that if you travel many times, but short distances, it's worth it because it's too hard to earn SCs and you'll use the Club membership lots of times. If you travel few times, but long distances, then don't get this because you earn more SCs and you'll have fewer opportunities to use the Club membership.

  • If you fly in economy, the extra luggage allowance alone can be worth it on long-haul

  • I have the platinum charge Amex which gets me free access to Virgin lounges, which is why I fly Virgin only for my 5-6 trips a year interstate

    • The card fee is over $1500. Isn't it? It's good for frequent overseas trips.

  • +1

That works out cheaper than my corporate membership. But will that mean I have to rejoin my corporate membership after the 4 years ?

  • Does anybody know if you can stack your renewal?

So if my membership expires in 2021 but I want to secure this price, can I renew for 4 years and it will extend until 2025?

I called Qantas frequent flyer contact centre and the person said that this is not possible.
You can only renew 30 days out from your expiry.
Does anybody else have a different experience?

    • You can stack. I renewed an expiry of 31/1/23 to the 31/1/27 yesterday.

      • Thanks. I just spoke to someone on Qantas Support Chat.
They confirmed somebody did it yesterday.

    • When I called this morning the consultant advised if I purchased a 4year renewal it would extent my expiry date from Dec 2020 (1 year away) to Dec 2014.
However, I've had 3 different answers when I rang this morning to check if I can renew via this special price on my corporate membership, and remain on the corporate at the end of the 4 years.
Final answer the special price is for individual membership only.

      • I just got off a chat session with them and it seems they must be getting a few queries about this. From my conversation -:

        1. Promotional offer is only available to individual memberships. However… I was also advised that if renewing via the website, the promotional price will only be displayed if you are on an individual membership. I'm definitely on a corporate scheme and despite knowing all my account details, the website is offering me the promotional price.

        2. I got a very vague confirmation that stacking is possible, however "…Qantas recommends that you do not renew until 30 days out in case your circumstances change, e.g. reach gold status)." Sounds like stacking is doable (as confirmed in earlier comments).

        3. What is not clear is whether it's possible to stack this offer on the end of your current corporate scheme renewal? From my conversation with them, it sounded like this was not possible, but the information was somewhat conflicting. They indicated that taking up the offer would negate the current corporate membership and you may not receive a refund. This doesn't sound right so I'm debating whether to simply renew via the website and then argue the case if it all goes badly.

        4. It was suggested that if you switch from an individual membership to a corporate membership, you may be liable for a joining fee. Again, I doubt this is going to be the case as a current member is a current member. Don't see why a new joining fee would be required? Either way, I'll be contacting them to ask the question about "…when my current individual membership comes up for renewal, I want to take advantage of my work's corporate scheme so how does that work?"

Bottom line, I'm thinking that if you already pay out of pocket for this and you're on the corporate scheme, it might be worth running the gauntlet with taking up the offer (provided you can switch from individual to corporate for no cost at the end of it).

        • Does stacking here mean you can get 2 for 1 on the corporate rate?

          • @1Kenobi: seems it doesn't
however confirmed there is no rejoining fee if you change to individual membership

      • so you just swap to individual membership for a few years then swap back it seems

      • +2

I renewed on corporate membership and it extended my membership till Oct 2024. At least it didn't stop me from doing it and di not invalidate current membership. generally when it comes time to renewal you just put in the corporate code so I can't see how you would not be able to renew at corporate rate as from past experience this seems to be an at renewal time check when paying rather than an ongoing part of your membership.

        • +1

Thanks for the info. Just did the same and it's extended mine to Jun 2025. Took a screenshot just to be on the safe side, but seemingly… happy days!!
