    Manufacturer's warranty 1 Year

Ahahaha that's not how it works at all.

    • JB-Hifi's 1 Year pinky promise.

      There, ftfy!

      Used (may even have scratches)

    • +4

Used, overseas seller, no warranty, what do you think you’re accomplishing here?

    • Deals I'd very @patchy

I've had this phone for 2 years. It's build quality is fantastic and it has given me no troubles at all. One of the best Android phones I have ever had.

    • +4

      Is the camera any good?

      • +4

I think its pretty good. Very similar to the LG v30 which my wife has.

I like the quality of the Bluetooth audio this phone has with my Sony headset

I like that there is a dedicated camera button

I like that the power button has the integrated finger print reader and it's in a good position.

I like that it's IP rated.

I have ever had an issue with battery life. I always get a full day, I swear I used to get two days.

I took the phone off charge at around 630am this morning, it's had 1hr 23min of screen time. I have used YouTube for 40mins,Google play music for 2hours 15 mins, internet browsing for 30mins. A few uses of messaging apps. I am at 68% battery. It predicts I have another 21hours of use before going dead.

        • are your photo's a little under exposed comparatively? People are saying the photo's are darker from the XZ

          • +1

@Andard: I have had no issues and have not noticed this suggestion.

I am hobby photographer who shoots with latest gen fuji gear. I like manual controls.

          Battery Update:
That message was at lunch 12:30pm it is now 9:15pm.

So from 6:30am to 9:15pm my phone is down to 31% with an estimated 11hours and 16 minutes remaining.
          Stats:
Last full charge 14 hours ago
Screen usage since full charge 3 hours.(exact)
          Browsing 1 hour 34 mins
          Youtube 40 mins
Google Play Music 3 hours 20 mins
I had 0 phone calls on it.
I responded to plenty of Messenger/SMS/Whatsapp/Viber messages.

  • Single or dual Sim?

    • Single sim version I would say - we didn't get dual version here, and that version should be marked as XZ Premium Dual.

Battery life is a bit lacking

    • Especially with a 4k disay

Battery life is a bit lacking

        No, it's not

        Especially with a 4k disay

No, most of the time the display runs at 1080p. It will only run at 4k with 4k video content.

    • +4

I've had this phone previously and whilst your mileage may vary, I never ran into issues with the battery. I'd finish a 9-5 day with at least 20%, and I consider myself a fairly medium-heavy user (consistent use throughout the day).
Also, the display doesn't always run at 4K to conserve battery life.

    • I have this phone and use it heavily for work and personal use, and I easily get through a day, usually with 40%+ remaining.

  • Is this the phone with the 4K screen but without a big enough battery to power it so you get lacklustre battery life?

    • +4

No, that's the Z5 Premium with the inefficient SD 810.

  • is this better than a s7 edge?

    • +1

Yes. Newer, faster, better. But YMMV depending on your use.

  • Hey guys, I'm looking for a phone for my folks so can anyone comment if this phone has a user friendly OS? Can anyone provide a comparison to a Pixel 3/3A? TIA

    • +4

Sony's UI is fairly unintrusive and for the most part, provides a mostly stock Android experience like the Pixel 3/3A.

      • +3

Thanks mate, really appreciate the reply

  • I used to get 5hrs+ not, it's worth changing dpi to show much more on the screen . .

  • +1

Horrible camera. But build quality is great!

  • Previously when I had a Z2 I found the OTA updates would be lacking or very delayed - is that still the case?

    • Not sure, Sony has one of the best track records when it comes to updates.
They're a bit slower, but they push out Stable Updates, unlike Pixel and OnePlus which get buggy updates all the time. The OS is usually clean, and the updates last for a long time. However, its not on all their devices. The Open Devices program is a good place to start. Unfortunately though, this phone is not currently supported for SailOS. However, there are some [Unofficial] Lineage and ResurrectionRemix Rom builds for it.

FWIW Released in Australia June 23rd, 2017 (UK 2nd June, US 19th June) - so 2 years and 5 months or so. Equivalent in age to, say, the iPhone 8 (released 22 Sep 2017), Galaxy S8 (21st April 2017) or the Pixel 2 (19th Oct 2017). So yeah, not the latest, but then again decent specs and a good price.

    • Got wood ? lol

You a time traveler? This phoen was released in September 2017.

  • Horrible speakers, definitely not the loudest I've heard in a phone.

Been using this phone for a couple years now, have been a faitherfull Sony fan since the xperia Z. Xperia z3 is the best phone I've ever had.

This phone unfortunately has quite a few miss-fires and omissions compared to the competition (ands it's own predecessor in the z3)

First and for most, there is a very common and honestly deal breaking issue that arose since about android 8.0 and onwards. For some reason, the phone like to randomly shut off and reboot. Total factory resetting and repartitioning via pc companion recovery has not rectified the issue. a lot of people have this issue if you google it, and it only started happening after a firmware update a year or so ago.

The camera is OK. Just OK. Low light photos are significantly worse and darker than the z3 and the competition is far more impressive in general.

Battery life is meh. Used to get 3 days with the z3. Get 1-1.5 with this.

    No wireless charging.

    Pretty dated aesthetics.

4k screen is a joke. You would never no it is one, even when watching 4k content. And it's a pretty average looking one at that
Also the build quality here leaves something to be desired. The inner components push onto the screen and cause white spots that don't go away.

I would not recommend this phone, and it's quite painful to say that.

    • 4k screen is a joke.

I dunno, I kinda liked it on the Z5 Premium but these days I spend $200 on phones with an IGZO screen with way less bezel than this thing.

      • I get where you're coming from, but that's differently model. Saying that the XZP screen must be allright because the z5p one is, just isn't accurate.

The laser cuts on the touchpanel are highly visible, pixels seems to have a visible border around them, colours and contrast are pretty dull, comparing it side by side to models such as iphone 6s, galaxy s6 edge and xperia z3, it is the worst looking screen across all categories.

    • +2

Wow, I have this phone and I have literally none of these problems. Have never, ever had it randomly shut off and reboot (sounds like a hardware problem to me) and the screen is IMHO very nice. Battery life is fine and equivalent to similar phones.

And IMHO the Aesthetics are great.

      • Agree that it could be a hardware problem, however it literally went from being a 100% funtional phone, updated, and that same day the random reboots began. My hail mary I'm banking on is switching to LineageOS and hoping that an AOSP base kernel/firmware might not have the same issues. Motivating myself to backup all my stuff and commit to a full wipe etc is proving challenging when I only just did it a month ago and it didn't pay off :p.

I used to not mind the Aesthetics either. I'm more so salty at the phone itself and all it's short comings so it's lost the charm it once had haha.

    • +2

I have also had this phone for 2 years but have not experienced the same issues as you.

I like the phone and would consider getting it again knowing the competition from the release period. For this price and now, I think it is a good deal.

    • I have this phone and i gotta say, alot of your issues are same issues i have also had with this phone and the whole restart thing only started for me around the same time as you mentioned. The battery life while probably good didnt wow me as much as my Z2 did, and in most cases this phone as a flagship phone didnt wow me when i upgraded to it from my previous phone as i had been wowed with each upgrade prior especially when i went to the Sony z2, that was the biggest wow factor for me. The battery life on that phone was amazing.

      • I hear ya. each phone prior blew me away, then it was just.. meh.

    • Had mine for a couple of months now. 4K screen is nice but I've had the same random reboot issues. A few times a week I'd say.

  • why would anyone in their right mind buy this over lg v30+

    • -2

      Because it's $399, LG is $799

    • I have the sony xz premium and my wife has the LG v30+. At $399 price they are very comparable and both good options.

Pet peev of the LG is that the power/fingerprint reader is in the middle of the back on the phone, sony is on the side.

What I like about the LG. Is the look of the OLED screen and how it keeps the time display up always while using very little power. The Sony is easier to read in bright daylight.

If one is more expensive over the other, buy the cheaper one.

Read reviews to see if either have deal breaker features for you, and read some of my comments in my post above.

      • -1

At $399 price they are very comparable

        Except the LG is $799

        • +2

Mate no one is going to buy the V30+ for $799. But they do often go back down to $399

          • @CVonC: ok cool, didn't know about that price hipster site

  • +4

Did the copy really say "Everything becomes Wow"????

That's the laziest line I've seen from marketing.

This or a Mi 9 for $100 more, tough choice. This phone is so ugly too, those bezels 🤮

  • +2

    Too much bezel. :|

      even for 2017 standards

4k screen on a tiny 5" screen … You would have to view it with a magnifying glass to see the difference.

    • 5.5 from the stats.
At 5 I would be all over this. All big phones these days. This one has big bezels of course too.

      • Xiaomi mi 6 or 9se?

    • +1

But yeah 4K is a bit ridiculous all round for phones IMO.

  • I have had this phone for a year and it is solid on all fronts but I would not recommend getting it now when you can do way better on the current generation at this price. Like the Samsung A50 which is the same price on eBay with the 20% codes or from the Samsung education store.

It's not bad, it's a 2 years old flagship. Camera noticeably falling behind compared to what's going on nowadays though -very slow to take photos.

  • 4k display but just 5.5"
    $399 but 2 yo SDM835
    average bargain IMO

    • if you can find a 6.x" 4K screen with SD855 for $399, please let me know. I could use an upgrade.

  • +1

Somehow this phone is like a Toyota Aurion

So.. it's being made by a bunch of people about to lose their jobs because their union told them it's better to give up their jobs entirely than give up some privileges? Which btw, no job = no privileges, so lose-lose all around.

When Everytime there is a new Android os update, it makes my phone battery life drain faster and app speeds go slower.

Guess that's the new way to make customer buy new phones.

    • +2

Once again, Android copies Apple's innovation.

Tiny battery, massive bezels. Nope !!
