  • What version of OS comes with it?

    • +1

Last Official OS was 2.1, you could Root it and try a 2.2v but on 168MB of RAM it will LAG…

  • Is it better option than "HTC Wildfire Black Android Next G" ?

    • HTC Wildfire S will KILL this…

      • +1

HTC Wildfire S will kill this? Hm… not 100%
        - CPU is the same
        - Screen resolution is the same (but Wildfire S is 256K, X8 is 16.7 mil colours).
        - Wildfire S has more RAM and ROM (big plus here, but 512MB ROM isn't THAT huge).
        - Wildfire S has better camera.
        - Wildfire S has Android 2.3 (vs 2.1 for X8) - again, big plus.
        - Wireless N support on Wildfire S (well.. not that important on this type of phone).

The thing is Optus is selling X8 for $99. Wildfire S - $250?
Both are low end phones… for the price of a Wildfire S, there are better options out there.

        • The question was Wildfire vs X8 not if other options are better, In that context the Wildfire will kill this in Every aspect, looks, specs and value for money, u said it all yourself…

Other benifits of the Wildfire include:

          3.2" screen
          Wireless N (VERY Important !)
          WiFi Hotspot capability
          Bluetooth v3.0
Snapdragon Processor with a bloody good GPU…
          5MP camera
          Much better battery life…
Ah and YES its HTC Sense… !

          Thats my opinion ! ;)

        • -1

Not value for money. HTC Desire S is over-priced (that's my opinion).
Screen… if specs' correct.. I prefer a 16.7 mil screen.
Based on your definition, I can make the comment: HTC Desire HD kills Sony Ericsson X8.

Honestly, low end phone, I don't think Android 2.3 is going to make a huge difference. 512MB ROM, after you deduct the space for the actual HTC built, there is still not much left.

Wireless N - not that important, it is not like your phone can download massive video when your Internet cannot even pump out more than 54Mbps. Watch HD movies on Desire S? Come on, let's be real here - it is not capable of doing that.

CPU with Andreno 200 - a bloody good GPU? Give me a break (that's one of the worst GPUs on the Android world). Told you the CPU is the same for both phones.

        • X8 with a 3.0" screen 16.7m colours is USELESS !

I own a Moto Defy and I know 512MB RAM is QUITE necessary !
You have NO Idea, I have gone 1up on 2.3 and am sitting on a 2.3.4 UK rom, its Brilliant !
I can't go into detail here but Any improvement on an OS is better than No improvement, and the Wildfire has room for much more ability, whereas the X8 is sitting dry and getting OLD !

Also you don't know how Wireless N works ? OMG lol

          Speed = Distance / Time

          N = 150-300Mbps

ALL IN ALL I CONSIDER THE WILDFIRE A MORE FUTUREPROOF PHONE THAN THE X8 by a LIGHTYEAR ! ;)

Y are we talking about the Desire S a High end 1Ghz phone ? lol

My mate has Desire S. He paid $299 I think. He already run out of space to install more apps (common issue with low end phones) - and he already moved apps. to SD.

0.2" inch extra makes the screen amazing? Moto Defy is like a Desire S - come on, Wildfire S is NOT a Desire S.

          256K vs 16.7 mil…. there is a difference.. I don't like to see dithering.

Wildfire S is over-priced. I wish HTC put a better CPU in Wildfire S.

Bottom line: if you want a low end Android, price is very important. But, if you can afford a bit more, buy a decent phone.

X8 - anything more than $99 - no point at all (the ONLY thing going for it is the 320x480 screen res / 16 mil screen) and a CPU that's the same as Wildfire S.
Wildfire S - sorry.. even though I really like high end HTC phones, but this one is not worth it… unless you MUST have a small phone and that extra 250MB ROM is very important to you.

      • @scan06disk… if you don't want people to buy low end phones, then you shouldn't suggest Wildfire S. CPU wise, it is not even an upgrade from X8 - they are the identical one.

I am trying to point out. If you REALLY want a low end phone, buy the cheapest - because even if you regretted it later on, you don't really lose much.

You are not going to get much more out of Wildfire S compared to X8. I've tried Wildfire, Wildfire S and X8. I doubt you tried all three.

        • Yes infact I have and the total package the Wildfire has to offer is quite a lot better than the X8 !

I tired the Fruit Ninja app on both the X8 and Wildfire with the BOASted 16m colours which failed to impress mainly due to the lag when fruits turn up, the racing games sucked and the Battery was the WORST part of all !
The HTC did all of the above smoothly and as a bonus playback a hd divx videos pretty well too, the X8 Sucked really BAD !!

My first experience with the X8 left a lasting hatered towards this phone, ESPECIALLY the lack in good asthetics, functionality was laggy with only a mere few programs installed.

In fact the only BIG Con about the Wildfire is lack of support for the higher resolution apps.

EVERYTHING else was immaculate and MUCH better than the X8. You seriously must have tried some pre-production version of the Wildfire.

    • Back to the original question.. which is Wildfire vs X8.

CPU: X8 wins (by a bit - it is the CPU that allows the better screen res. support)
      Screen: X8 wins (320x480 [x8] vs 240x320 [Wildfire])
Camera: Wildfire wins (it even has an LED flash)
Software: Wildfire has Android 2.2 (better)

Price.. X8 is slightly cheaper??? and unlocked at this price. Most people probably don't like X8, but I think the screen resolution and the CPU swings it X8's way. The default launcher for X8 is pretty basic. Get at least ADWLauncher or Laucher7 (not quite sure about the names, my mate recommends Laucher7 - he is a phone 7 fan). Must say, Laucher7 looks cool.

      Optus sells X8 for $99.

      • You forgot to compare a main component RAM and ROM

        • Okay.. here goes - a bad attempt:
          RAM: Wildfire (384MB) vs X8 (212MB roughly)
ROM: Wildfire (512MB ROM - but I dunno how much you get left after the HTC software…) vs 176MB ROM (for app).

Check some youTube on the comparison between the two phones. I think X8 still come out on top. I might borrow my brother's Wildfire and have a check. I am impressed with high end HTC phones.. but not Wildfire…

        • ram and rom were included in original comparison

        • -1

yea true. Wildfire isnot that good, so is Sony one. I have read several reviews of being too slow. I have HTC Legend and with better hardware specs than Wildfire, still it is not smooth to run apps and games.
But for this amount, I think as X8 is so cheap, its a good buy.

      In response to SweetStella's question:

Is it better option than "HTC Wildfire Black Android Next G"?

You are referring to the HTC Wildfire, not HTC Wildfire "S", which is a better model and discussed by others here.

Overall, the Wildfire is probably a slightly better phone compared to the Sony Ericsson X8, although, what lets it down is its inferior screen resolution (240 x 320). Is it worth another $50?—maybe, maybe not.

A better option in this price range (if you don't need a Telstra Next G phone) is the LG Opitmus One for $158 delivered (http://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/Items/lg-optimus-one-1) or the Huawei Sonic for $188 delivered from Dick Smith (http://dicksmith.com.au/product/E7421/huawei-sonic-android-v…).

      • Good point about the LG Opitmus One and Huawei Sonic. Both are Android 2.3 (well, Optimus One will get Android 2.3). Both have bigger screens.

CPUs on LG Optimus One and the X8 are the same (probably the same for Sonic).
X8 has 16.7 mil screen. LG Optimus One - 256K.

LG Optimus One and Sonic are better - esp. if you prefer a phone with a bigger screen.

  • Made the mistake of buying this phone and have had nothing but problems. The logo on the top of the phone comes completely off within weeks. The charging port is bipolar and will often not work at all. It lags regularly, sometimes the screen wont work for no reason at all and lastly i find the battery to be a bit like an N64 cartridge where sometimes the phone just wont work unless you blow on it.
The interface is nothing to write home about either but that can be fixed with ADW.Launcher. Also as of the moment it is only 2.1 upgradeable through the official updates although by rooting it you can chuck on a 2.3 gingerbread kernel with basic multitouch (example of 2.3 kernel note that i don't think this kernel allows multitouch: http://forums.se-nse.net/topic/55933-rom-x8-233-gingerbread-…). You can also root the phone to unlock it so the optus $99 deal is probably better as well.

    • +1

Did you return it under warranty? There appears to be some manufacturing defects and faults that shouldn't be there.

      • nah probably could have but i'm not organised enough to keep receipts anyways i just bought it as a cheap phone until the iphone 5 comes out and as long as i can make phone calls and use google maps on it i'm happy.

  • I will get Huawei Sonic for $188 instead.

    • why? the only good thing is it comes preloaded with android 2.3 which you can do on many low end phones with custom rom. i wouldn't pay over 150 for any phone that has a 600mhz processor

      • +1

Lol, yeah, of course you can but how many people want to spend the time or know how to root and load a custom ROM? More often than not with custom ROMs there are bugs and compatibility issues. Also your warranty is void.

Some people actually just want to buy a phone and use it without all the issues that come with customising it. The Huawei Sonic is a great choice for them.

It's easily worth your while to spend another $40 and get the Huawei Sonic from BIG W or Dick Smith instead of the X8—you won't be sorry.

  • how does the samsung monte compare to the sony ericsson x8? sorry i'm a ultra tech idiot, i dun understand a majority of the discussion. you should really keep answers to 'get x8' or 'get monte' :)

    thanks

    • The X8 is a better phone. See my comments above regarding other phone choices that may be better value in this price range.

It also depends which network you're on. This particular X8 is the Telstra Next G version while I believe the Monte only comes in 3G 900/2100 MHz version—for use on networks like Optus, Virgin, Vodafone.

  • samsung gio is a good option, 180 unlocked.

  • +1

    Okay.. a simple/rough comparison for non-tech people.
Just on CPU + GPU alone…
    386SX - [Not even iPhone 3G] - Huawei U8150/IDEOS, Huawei X1, Samsung Galaxy 5, HTC Wildfire
386DX - [iPhone 3G] - Sony X8, LG Optimus One, Samsung GIO, Huawei Sonic, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Legend, Garmin Asus A50
    486 - [iPhone 3GS] - Huawei X5
586 - [nearly iPhone 4 or iPhone 4] - Nearly iPhone 4: Sony X10, HTC Desire. iPhone 4 like: HTC Desire Z, HTC Desire S, HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy S.
686 - [iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 - dunno what Apple will call it yet] HTC Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S II.

Yes, they can have different RAM/ROM combination, but the CPU is important - it also determines the max. res of the screen.

Why you shouldn't get a low end phone (one that is not even iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G equiv) that's too expensive: iPod Touch 4th Gen - 8GB is only $199 or less. It is iPhone 4 without the phone bit and a cheaper screen (it has less RAM & ROM, but the speed diff. is minor). Apple want a juicy profit on every iPhone 4… otherwise, they can release iPod Touch 4th Gen 8GB + phone for $220 -> I'm sure they will sell like hot cakes.

Cheap androids - they are slow, and forget about proper gaming on those. They are just toys.. okay as secondary phones or temporary phones. Anything over $100 for those… probably not a good idea.
