especially considering BYOD is around the corner

      School.

      • Which state is that happening?

        • NSW/VIC and probably others.

        • QLD

        • All of them. It's a school based thing. SOme schools do it, some don't. My kid's primary school makes them bring ipads to year 4 onwards.

        • Decided at a school level but schools CBF spending money on laptops students break in a week anymore.

    • +1

      Bring your own device

      • -8

Cheers I know the acronym. They started banging on about it over 8yrs ago. I never understood why anyone would bring their own laptop to work. As for schools, the reason they like uniformity is it's easier to support.

Anyway its a cheap 8gb laptop.

  • Sounds like a great price, what's the catch? Besides buying at HN?

Edit: Two specs caught my eye: runs Windows 10 S and weighs 1.8kg.
Can one easily turn Windows 10 S into Windows 10?

    • +6

Can one easily turn Windows 10 S into Windows 10?

Yes. Converting is fairly straightforward. The steps are listed here

      • Looks easy as. Cheers.

      • and irreversible too

no change of mind like buying things at JB

        • +3

Not like you'd want to go back to a gimped Windows 10 S install but there should be a factory reset feature on the laptop to reimage it back to S if you ever feel so inclined

    • -1

Sounds like a great price, what's the catch? Besides buying at HN?

Is that not a big enough catch?

    • -1

The catch is it's Acer, which usually means poor quality.

      • +2

Oh it doesn't for me. I've had Acers for a while.

        • +1

Usually the quality of a budget Acer laptop will not be as good as other brand names. To get a good quality Acer laptop you need to skip their budget models.

          • @rogerm22: It sounds like the same for Dell or Hp

            • @Laziofogna: Budget models from Dell, HP and Toshiba, while usually having unremarkable quality, generally are of better quality than budget laptops from Acer. Acer is actually well known as being a cheap and nasty brand.

I usually stay away from budget laptops of all brands and just use cheap used business laptops from eBay, as the quality almost always is much better.

              • @rogerm22: Just because something has a budget price doesn't mean it's a budget laptop..

At least Acer puts a FHD in their budget range. Meanwhile, $700+ Dells have a 1366*768 screen. Asus is probably one of the worst.
Got a budget HP and it choked within weeks.

I prefer my laptop to be new personally and not someone's degraded Latitude, but that's personal preference.

If $488 is the new price for a i3-10x/8GB/SSD/FHD laptop of reasonable size then I'll say budget computers don't have much of a future.
Reasonable size to me is somewhere around 13-14".

  • Looks pretty good - is there anything else around that might rival this?

  • +3
    • Not sure if the one from Amazon has backlit keyboard?

Also not sure if the one from H.N uses a IPS screen?

      • Yeah good spot. Harvey Norman one apparently has fingerprint reader as well. They are either slightly different or one of the retailers had made mistakes in the listing.

I suspect this may be a new listing at Harvey Norman and they made a pricing error or something because seems too cheap.

Getting though Amazon with Zip Pay 10% back offer brings this to $439.2.

    • How does this zip thing work I got granted 1000 does that mean I can spend up to 1000 even if I only have say 50 in my debit card. And are we protected like with PayPal if someone hacks our account and spends the 1000.

      • Zip, afterpay, humm and a few others are basically short term 'interest free' payment options. Just like the traditional interest free you have to pay them back in a set amount of time with these it's usually within 10 equal instalments, they are huge now as they found a loophole in the finance and banking system… Anyway they make money via charging merchants about 3% per transactions and customers who miss an instalment or are late in paying it off, the fine is usually a set amount like $10 or something… Read T's&c's very carefully as they are not bound by the same laws as credit institutions.

        • +2

Interest free but a $6pm account fee with zip. So effectively a 7.2%pa interest rate on $1000 balance and 14.4%pa on $500.

          • @tryagain: Zip allows credit limit of up to $1500 now - about 4.8% p.a interest rate if you use it all up.

            • @G77: When I looked a couple of days ago, zip pay was only for balances up to $1000?

              • @tryagain: I have $1500 credit with ZipPay. Comes with below message when I go on the 'Limit increase' option:

Zip Pay only offers limits of up to $1,500, so we're unable to give you a limit increase.

                • @G77: Signed up and it doesn't offer me an increase, I am guessing it is like credit cards, once you prove you have a good payment history they are happy to increase the amount available to you, but looks like it is still $1000 on signup.

It was a bit to easy to sign up though!

                  • @tryagain: Fair enough, I've had my Zip account for 2+ years now and they offered me the increase without applying. Can't remember what the initial sign-up credit limit was. $500, I think? So $1000 is still pretty good!

              • @tryagain: Zip money lets you borrow more

          • @tryagain: Do you still get a charge if you pay it out straight away to take advantage of Amazon 10% back using zip pay

            • @paulaus: Nope no charge. Just pay it out before your month is up and you incur no fees

  • How does this compare with Lenovo E595?

    • +1

Depends on the specs of the Lenovo…

    • Same question. I'm thinking of getting that too

  • +1

    FHD IPS

    • Is that a good or bad thing?

      • +8

Good especially on a low end laptop

    • Does mention that for the Amazon model, not mentioned for the H.N. model, but H.N. does mention backlit kb.

      • Yes mentioned on Amazon

  • Got it on Amazon with the shopback 20% (Capped at $50 but still good!)

    • Jealous - hoping that there will be a repeat by either shopback/cashrewards this weekend so I can cancel and re-order.

    • How much was the price of the laptop yesterday then before CB?

    • +1

      its 3.40% at shopback

  • -1

Hi all. Is this a touch screen. Assuming that it is not as it isnt in the specs. Kids byod needs to be touchscreen. Thanks.

  • -2

what was the original price?499 I assume

    • Doesn't appear to be any original price. I suspect it's a new listing and they made a pricing error. I have been looking for cheap laptops like this last few days and didn't notice it before this post.

      • +1

Well actually it does say special price until 3rd December…

    • Take a look what else is $499. Celerons and Pentium Silver, most with 4GB ram or 1366*768 screens.
10th Gen i3 is not supposed to be cheaper than a base i3 8th gen.

  • If you look at the 4th Pic on Amazon it does look like the keys are lit

  • Heading in store to check it out tomorrow morning.
Been looking for a cheap, light laptop with ok specs with an RJ45 for on site programming of IP cameras, this looks like a great solution.

    • Intel Core i3-10110U scores up to 86% more than the Core i5-8265U in GFXBench

      • So would this laptop be better value for money then the Lenovo Thinkpad E495 deal posted a few days ago?

        • +2

Better laptop, no. Better value, maybe.

  • damn, I bought the i3 8th gen, 15.6' for the same price a month ago from Binglee?

    can I return?

    • This one?
Funnily enough I haven't actually picked it up yet… It's an impulse buy, just like this one will be lol.

If you've picked it up or opened it I don't reckon you'd be allowed, but it's worth a shot.

Note the 8145U still holds its on in benchmarks. The 10110U is better but not a country mile.

  • Crap- just bought Lenovo E495 for $632 (incl cashback). sigh

    • +2

Looks like a great buy. If you were after cheep cheep you probably not happy but damn man, still a good buy.

  • I thinking of this as a school BYOD device but is 1.8kg a bit heavy to lug around?

  • All sold out on Amazon? Damn, missed the 20% cashback deal. Wonder if any chance Amazon would stock again before end of today. Crazy value for those who got it.

    • +1

      Wouldn't be on 20percent of 488. Was 5pm yesterday

  • The picture on the Harvey Norman website is wrong, this model doesn't have a number pad!
    Trip wasted.

    • Thanks Spiderboy, that's the question I was just about to ask. No number pad puts me out :(

    • +1

      I don't think there's many 14" laptops with a numberpad. You'd have to buy a 15" version

      • The Asus zenbook 14" had a unique design of it incorporated into the touchpad, almost bought it last week at $1200+ but was just too hard to justify.
Oh well, back to the drawing board. All I need is a solid build, numberpad, light and preferrably an RJ45. For a good price. :(

        • +1

Would the Lenovo E595 work for you Spiderboy? It's not light but spec and price is good.

          • @nataz6: Possibly, how do the AMD CPUs compare to this new series of i3's?
            Looks solid though!

    • How come the image shows number pad ….

      • They couldn't answer that for me.
Looks like they just pulled up the 15.6" pic and put it in there.

    • How was the screen quality on it?

      • Awesome iOS full hd

How do the AMD R5-3500U CPUs stack up against the new i3's?

    • Screen res is shite on the Asus

    • Screen Size (inches) 15.6
      Screen Definition High Definition
      Screen Resolution 1366 x 768

Honestly, it's not the processor you need to worry about here.

      • Honestly, for what I'll be using it for onsite, the screen quality is not of high importance.

I'll be running native IP camera programs, the amount of IP Addresses I'll be entering it makes a numpad one of my highest requirements and if I do use it at home it'll be basically docked to an external monitor/keyboard/mouse anyway.

I did have a quick look at the laptop I linked and it really didn't look too bad, screenwise.
I can see how if it were a daily workhorse or staring at it on the couch of a night not being FHD could be an issue for some though.

        • Yeah exactly. For database entry (which I do a lot of), I need a FHD at least. When I'm on the go, laptop is good but when I'm actually at work there's the desktop I use more.

People almost 8 years ago were complaining about 1366*768 resolution.

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed one for my parents to take away when cruising around spending my inheritance. My local HN was sold out, but the electronics section of my local Domayne has just been rebranded to Harvey Norman, so I was able to pick one up from there.

So far, really impressed with the machine for the price. Display was really nice and bright and uniform. Windows 10S was reverted to 10 Home within a few seconds, and there wasn't too much in the way of bloatware to remove. Performance seems quite snappy in basic tasks, although this is just opinion I haven't benchmarked anything yet.

The box came with absolutely bare minimum in the way of extras, except for a 2.5" SSD mounting bracket, which I thought was a strange thing to include in a consumer laptop. Are they ok with you ripping out and upgrading the factory storage?

    • Does it mention it's IPS in screen info

      • Screen is IPS the sticker on the laptop states IPS Full HD

    • +1

You can actually install a second 2.5" drive using the provided mounting kit.

I grabbed this laptop today too, the screen is great and it feels snappy.

I tested the speed of the SSD and sustained sequential reads were 1.4 TB/sec!

I'll probably grab a 1TB SSD to install as the second drive.

      Very happy so far

  • Similar question for me. Is the ram upgradable? Can another ssd be added or can the existing one be removed and replaced with a bigger one? Thanks.

    • A second drive can be added, not sure about RAM

  • Just pciked this laptop up an hour go

Its awesome.. screen is IPS Full HD.. worth the money hands down.

  • +3

I just picked mine up, I haven't turned it on yet, but I've pulled the back cover off it.
The 128G SSD is a Kingston NVMe drive. It's ALSO got another empty slot for a standard 2.5" drive, there's a mounting kit included in the box.
This is great as there is a LOT of upgrade potential for storage here.

As far as the RAM goes, i see a single stick - "4GB 1RX16 PC4-3200AA-SC0-11".
I don't see the other stick, I'm going to assume it's on the other side of the board, possibly even soldered?

The sticker on the battery says it's "Rated capacity: 4343mAh/48.85Wh"

    • Very useful info, thanks!

Any chance you could post a photo of the internals?
