  • Is this plug n play with nbn?
Also what's the difference with the new google nest?
    Thanks

damn this is the most cocky thing ever but it's hilarious

    • New Nest Wifi: difference between router vs puck. router costs $269 and looks cooler with faster wifi. puck is $249 and has a nest mini speaker built in but no ethernet ports.

I prefer Home Mini for the ethernet ports on each puck. Works well for making devices think they're on an ethernet connection which is more stable than wifi for me especially for the NAS and some devices which seem to have poorly placed wifi antenna.

  • Didn't actually realise they dropped out the ethernet ports on the new nest mesh points. Glad I read your description! That, and no wifi 6 and expensive pricing … What were google thinking with the new nest version?

Loss of ethernet port is actually huge. Instead of wiring my home with ethernet cabling which would have been insanely expensive, I have google wifi in the rooms I need ethernet cables and use them. Works flawlessly.

      • I did the same, it's unfortunate taking a step backward without Ethernet ports

      • Same. I'm even debating if I want to buy another set of Google Wifi just to make sure I have ethernet outlets everywhere but, I only have a 2 bedroom apartment so… maybe it's overkill lol.

Google typically don't think much about products beyond the initial release.

      • Disagreed on this particular case as there have been quite a lot of updates over the two years I've owned my Google Wifi and seen new features/etc. Surprising by Google's typical standard.

        • -3

You got wifi 6, 4x4 through software updates? That's crazy!!!!

          • @onlinepred: Obviously not.

For anyone who is curious about what changed in the software, refer to changelog.

I only point this out because some of the initial reviews called out some settings/"advanced features" as not being available which were subsequently added through regular firmware updates.

            • @jace88: Because when it came out it had next to no features at all. I know as I got it on launch. They added some good features to it that it should have had at launch. Features that nearly all routers already had. The point I was making, is that after an initial innovation, Google usually don't follow the market in the next release, and their software updates are very far behind.

              • @onlinepred: I agree some features were missing at launch but I also bought it knowing they weren't there - the USP to me was an extremely straightforward and easy to set up mesh wifi system which could be managed via an app both at home and outside.

I'm sure there are people out there who will miss certain features which still are omitted, but at least in my use case, the only remotely advanced feature I use is LAN IP reservation and other than that, I'm pretty happy with what it does.

I previously used a DD-WRT router and sure it was fun tinkering with it, I never got the same satisfaction as the Google Wifi in terms of using the app, looking at which devices are using the most bandwidth, looking at usage history, prioritisation of devices, etc. (and of course the mesh wifi reaching all the corners of my wifi-crowded apartment)

                • @jace88: Coverage is a key aspect these guys are only good at with multiple routers. A single router has very poor coverage compared to basic routers. Also consider that the more routers you add to the mesh, the poorer the performance for Lan speed. Some may not need or worry about that.

                  • @onlinepred: True. Whilst most of my devices are gigabit, and my PC has 2.5Gbps, my NBN connection even on the 100/40 plan struggles to reach 70 in a best case scenario, so I don't think I'm in dire need of anything faster. Besides, I also use switches attached to the pucks for quite a few of my devices (including PC and NAS).

                    • @jace88: Yea, it's the NAS that will be suffering lower speeds, that's all. I noticed it straight away with 3 pucks, my transfer speed to/from my NAS was significantly lower than when using just a basic router. I tried the latest Orbi and my speeds are now faster than the original model I had. It's just an example of a use case where the Google Wifi pucks aren't ideal for. They can solve many problems, but they also create issues for certain use cases.

                      • @onlinepred: Fair enough. I think if my next NAS supports 10Gbit ethernet or at least aggregation (I have a 215j with a single port) then I might look into upgrading the switch which connects PC and NAS to the puck, but until my internet connection speeds improve significantly I don't think I'll have a need to change to a faster wifi mesh network…

                        • @jace88: Well Google wifi won't even saturate the standard wifi ability of 350Mbps, I was getting write speeds of barely faster than my 100Mb NBN just copying files from PC to Nas. Having a 10Gb port won't make a difference if over wifi. It's wifi mesh that is slowing down the connection if over wifi.

  • Any issues using this with the FTTC NBN ?

    • I still had to connect mine through the isp router to still allow the phone to work but otherwise no issue

  • The old best I can find currently chestnut.

anyone with google wifi, finding the connection dropping randomly for a few seconds? as in, I'll go into the app, and there will be 0 connected but then 2 secs later, it'll be back to normal??

    • Closest thing I have to you is that it'll sometimes show 0 devices connected but then show the correct number a few seconds later.

    • Yeah it happens to me every time I open that menu - too bizarre hey

  • Does anyone know what will happen to the other pucks on the network if the primary point (ie the puck connected to the modem) loses power? Will the other pucks still remain connected and remember the DHCP addresses/etc?

I have a UPS connected to my PC and switch, and am thinking of adding one more to the NAS and puck, but I do not have a UPS on the internet modem/puck.

Main concern is corruption as a result of sudden power loss rather than maintaining external access. And honestly 99% of my NAS usage is from either my PC or other devices on the local network, very occasionally over wifi.

  • Sorry in advance for my noob question..

I am waiting on NBN (HFC) installation for next week through ABB. I was planning on just continuing to use my Telstra gateway frontier wifi router - I don't need voip.

Quick question, If I purchased this Google wifi mesh pack - do I still need a wifi router?

Or can one of these units connect straight to the NBN supplied modem - and then I can place the other two units around the house to get greater wifi coverage?

    Cheers for the advice

    • +1

Yep, you can use one of these units to directly connect to the NBN box.

Am on HFC and I completed my setup yesterday. Quite seemless.

It wasnt connecting at first and then I used the other port (there are two) in google wifi to connect to NBN box and it worked like a charm.

I guess only one of them works as a WAN, although I read somewhere that either could be used, but may be not.

The range is pretty good, pretty happy with the whole experience.

Only issue is you cannot manually select band you want to connect with so a bit of issue trying to connect the smart devices around the house.

      CHeers!

  • Anyone looking to offload one of their pucks?

I just need one more to finish off my network, wish I had a house big enough to use 3 :/

  • Hey guys,

As mentioned in my earlier post, I am currently using the Telstra Gateway Frontier wifi router and all in all I have been satisfied with the wifi performance, It's centrally located in my single storey house with several devices connected at any given time.

I am switching to NBN (HFC) next week, and was planning on continuing to use my existing router - question - will my wifi performance change in any way? Because either a) I'm moving to ABB (from Telstra) or b) I'm currently 100mbps with Telstra moving to a 50mpbs plan.

Or am I better off to go with something like this Google wifi set up?

    Thank you
