Doe anyone have experience with Kogan Internet? Interested to know how reliable the speeds are.

    • +5

yeah mate, i am with their NBN50 plan. I churned across from Exetel.

Overall, i am pretty happy. I get a text message well in advance of any NBN planned outages.

I also had a call from their support team yesterday after i raised a ticket to follow up my issue.

i get around 43mbps on their Silver plan.

      • Thanks! Will hope over after my contract with TPG expires.

          What do you think jv?

          • +10

@odysseus: You think jv can think??? seriously

          • -8

@odysseus: I'm with Telstra and they never notify me of unplanned outages… You'd think when you're paying a premium, you'd get better service.

            • +3

              @jv: Lol at this dude

            • +2

@jv: Premium is only the price you pay :D

              • +5

@Headless: If your with telstra you should have their smart modem, when net goes out 4g internet kicks in, that's premium no

                  @botchie:

If your with telstra you should have their smart modem

Nope, the one they gave me doesn't have 4G.

                  • -1

@jv: Well, that's not premium at all

            • @jv: thats why telstra sucks, i keep hearing outages affect clients and business every few months.

i use to pay lots to them premium $$$ but then moved to Optus fine so far if not better

only good thing telstra have on-shore chats

              • @capslock janitor: Onshore support is literally anyone but Telstra. (Superloop, Aussiebroadband, Future Broadband etc)

                • -1

@machej: Least it's Aussies for the most part not some broken English support. But not worth the extra dollars Optus cheaper even if it's Indian and Filipinos

      • Hi Dud, im currently on exetel and probably looking at moving to kogan sometime in July, im curious if any modem issues, the exetel one I assume your using and it just updated to kogan?

        • +1

          Hi rodie,

I use a Netgear Nighthawk, instead of the Exetel / Kpgan supplied modems.

No issue at all. If anything, Kogan is much easier to connect. There is no need for a username and password, unlike Exetel.

From memory, i think Kogan offer a free modem anyway. Might pay to opt for it in case you have any issues with the Exetel modem.

          Good luck.

    • +4

My experience is great speeds to local servers (which is like 90% of things these days due to CDNs) but very mediocre speeds to overseas services.

For the price being offered, I'd say it is a great deal.

      • Yeah the overseas speeds aren't great

    • +2

I just churned from them to superloop. I was on 100m HFC, didn't have much problem. Speed drops a bit at peak time but not too bad. Only thing I didn't like was that they don't have an online portal to check usage etc.

The special price has been since beginning this year, they keep extending it. This time they reduced by $20 but you don't get a free modem.

      • +1

20 bucks off per month is way better than any default modem they might be handing out surely

    • I was with them for a few months. Speeds are fine during peak. No problems. I might jump across again if I am eligible for this deal.

  • +2

my superloop 69.9 deals ends on April next year, will looking forward for alternative ISPs by then…..

    • same here.

  • +2

Wow that is a good deal. I'm paying that now for 25/5 on Aussie BB. Might have to port over to Kogan!

    • +3

dude you are getting ripped off.

  • +9

Premium NBN haha, I wonder if it's like their premium warranty process.

    • +6

Its 100% vodafone managed. Only kogan branding.

  • +2

I just signed up with Belong $55 plan. I am so happy. I am getting 47MBPS.

  • +2

Vodafone has the similar option for $69 6 months

    • i didnt realise. Is it month to month?

      Do you have a link?

Might be worth exploring further also.

        • Thanks for that. Seemed pretty good until having to pay $249 for the wi fi hub if not connected for 36 months.

Sorry, i have to agree with @kamio on this one.

          • @COVID-19: You can join the plan without a modem, at least that's what the offer was when I churned over to them. You may have to call to set it up.

          • +3

@COVID-19: Call them and ask for BYO modem plan.
I signed up 2 days back.

    • +1

Except you end up having to pay $180 for the wifi router unless you sign up on a 36 month contract.

      • +1

yes that's correct, I currently have that plan… the wifi router has backup 4G so if internet goes down, it switches to 4G

  • +3

Can we schedule the connection to a few months in the future?

    • I would like to know too, NBN Is not up yet where I am

  • Great deal! I am struggling with my dodo service for a while.

    Perfect X'mas gift!

    Just signed up.

  • +8

I just left my Kogan 100/40 FTTN plan to move to Superloop after my Kogan $20 per month discount expired.

I sync at full speed, and with Aussie Broadband and Superloop I get 90Mbps according to Speedtest.net. With Kogan the worst I saw during peak time was ~80Mbps.

For this price, it's a pretty good deal, but not mind-blowing. Also, what surprised me is that Kogan do not have a customer portal/login, where you can do all the normal stuff like view previous bills, your usage history, etc. I found this really strange, and it has been the only ISP I've ever had without some kind of account login facilities.

Overall I'd say at $20 per month discount these offerings are decent value. I would however choose Superloop over Kogan as I've had much more reliable speeds with no real slowdown in peak period, and a fairly comprehensive customer portal. If you download less than 500GB per month it's also cheaper which makes it a no-brainer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/500735.

    • Wait, so how exactly do you obtain your past receipts and invoices, other than the ones sent to you in email?

      • +5

It's just via your email. If you need to change billing process or basically anything, you'll need to call them. I had to do it once because I changed credit cards.

It is a really a no-frills option but there's no contract and the modem's free (just stay for 1 month). Good for set up and forget type of users I guess.

        • Any ideas how you'd check your Usage used/Usage remaining?

I am paying $69 + $10 a month for nbn 50 unlimited + unlimited local calls home phone with TPG.

It is the price I get for life.

I would love to switch to something cheaper if it was cheaper for the life of the plan and had a home phone option.

But it seems TPG is the best one for now.

Any permanent nbn 50 unlimited cheaper than $69 a month out there with zero setup or one off costs because they are all 6 - 12 months special price period then they go up.

    • You wont find many "for life" plans out there…

      • Exetel used to have a really competitive deal but no idea what happened to it.

It was the best plan when I was finding something with international calls to India a while back but I was stuck in a contract with either tpg or experimenting with telecube at the time so I missed it.

Right now I can get a similar nbn 50 unlimited plan with bonus unlimited local and international calls to landlines and mobiles to 12 countries from Exetel for $89/month which is $10 extra a month plus I need to buy their $79 WiFi modem but yeah unlimited international calls to India.

I swear they had a $59/month nbn 50 unlimited plan at one point with no expiry it was $59/month for life but can't find it now ah well maybe my memory is playing tricks on me again.

        • No mind tricks - I helped my old landlady sign up for that deal, though I remembered it as $60 per month, but close enough.

First deal I looked for after moving house but alas it was gone. Exetel now offering awful deals like $69 a month for NBN 25 plans. Ugh!

          • @CrankyCarrot: Yeah it was a top deal I think only flip TV had a similar or better price but no idea how that mob is.

  • +2

It looks like a great price, I am with ABB 50mps and can’t fault their service … though not the best bang for bucks. Would anyone recommend the transfer to Kogan

  • Just curious how easy is it to switch NBN providers? Do you just notify new provider and they'll sort it out?

    • +3

Really simple. I've been through it half a dozen times now (usually when my introductory offer expires :-p)

I just wait until I'm late into my billing month (~ 5 days before the bill renewal date) and then sign up with the new provider. I do this because most providers don't offer prorata refunds if you're churning away, so you want to use up as many days as you can in the month you've already paid. You don't want to cut it too close to your billing date though in case there is a delay and you don't get transferred before your next bill is debited.

Depending on the provider and which backend supplier you're switching from/to it's usually pretty quick. My jump from Kogan to Superloop was done within 20 minutes of signing up. I got an SMS saying "Welcome to Superloop", my modem dropped out for a minute, came back up and I was up and running with the new provider.

After that I just give the old provider a call to ensure that they have acknowledged that I am no longer a customer and do not expect any more bills, and that's that.

      • Do you need to make any modem changes? I am with Optus and have an Optus branded and locked down FTTN modem. Does that just work on the new service?

        • For FTTN some providers need a username/password and others connect without any.

        • +2

Beware of TPG group of companies (iiNet, internode, tpg, …?). They require your modem to support a specific vlan id (2), and PPP password. Some routers do not allow you configure vlan or vlan 2 (some Asus models) is hard wired and cannot be used.

They should make this clear when you sign up and BYO modem but it’s not.

      • +4

A true OzBargainer switches RSPs when the introductory offer expires. Good job.

    • +1

Totally depends what access technology you’re on.

With HFC & FTTN/B/C as you’re only able to have one provider at a time, you do what’s called a ‘churn’ of your connection from your old provider to your new provider. This should send through a notification to the previous provider that you e left, but not always. Always good to call your previous provider after you’ve churned to make sure your account is closed.

For FTTP/FW/Sat as you can have 4 providers on each NTD, any new service is generally provisioned on the next available UNI-D port.unless you specify otherwise.

  • +1

    not for existing customer?

  • What speeds

  • Waiting for ABB, I need the landline phone unfortunately, so it severely limits my options.

  • +1

Paying 75 for this now, if I disconnect and connect again can I get this deal?

  • +2

If you watch videos or rely on international servers, I would say Kogan (and Vodafone) are not the best out there.

    • +3

      … based on what assessment?

    • +1

Been with Vodafone nbn100 for 5 months now, no issues with 4K streaming on YouTube, Netflix etc. Usually always get between 90-93Mbps speedtest.

      • +3

Netflix and Youtube will have local CDN (content delivery network) hosted in Australia which is alright with Kogan. If you stream videos hosted on international servers, I say good luck.

    • +2

Totally agree with you. Their speed sucks for international CDN. I was on 50mbs plan. When I tested with mlab max I got only 10mbs download speed. But when I tested with the speed test provided by them it shows 45mbs.
If anyone use Kogan internet, pls try the below link to test the speed & tell us your opinion. Btw now I have switched to Aussie broad band. It’s much better.

85/35 in perth but I still find it slow.

      • 117/5 Telstra cable that i'm going to miss when i have to switch next mnth.

  • About to switch to Optus 100/40 $70 24 month contract. $99 set up fee though. Free speed pack cause my parents been with Optus 15+ years… Hopefully Optus is good if not will jump on this.

  • Hi Folks,

NBN was just recently rolled out in my suburb (Indooroopilly, 4068). I will be the first tenant to have NBN in the apartment that I am renting. The apartment is old (10+ years).

Is there any way of knowing before signing up to NBN whether I will be stung with the $300 new development fee? I can't seem to find anything information about this. Do I just sign up hoping that I won't have to pay? If I could know beforehand, then it would be a deciding factor whether I would move to NBN or stick to mobile broadband (500GB for $80 with Optus)

    Thanks in advance

    • edit: Kogan should usually advise you when you make the order. You can call up NBN co https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/contact-us-fo… and they can tell you if existing infrastructure exists nor not.

    • You said the apartment is 10 years old, so it's not a new development. No fee (unless they didn't even put in copper 10 years ago?).

    • +1

Check if the fee applies by using the Future Broadband Service Qualification tool. No sign up necessary.

      • great tool.

    • Thanks folks. I decided to sign up to Superloop, and they confirmed over the phone that I would not have to pay the new development fee.

  • I was just looking for a NBN deal after experiencing constant drop outs on my telstra broadband. I live in 2075.

With the BYO modem, what modem should I get from value for money perspective? I live in a house so the coverage needs to be decent I think.

Also with the backup sim, do you need to get a kogan sim?

  • I'm with them on the 50mbit plan which is this price $65.90.. reckon they'll give me 100mbit for the 6 months?

Seems only way is to call them

  • was with them for 2 weeks.. garbage if you want to have any respectable gaming latency
no idea why, they told me to power cycle my sh!t.
so i power cycled to superloop, now ABB.. half the bandwidth but games are actually responsive

  • Im currently with Aussie Broadband and love it. I can get high speeds and low ping during peak hour while i play video games and my wife streams HD netflix at the same time without any issues. Anyone had experience gaming with Kogan internet? Im paying 80 bucks a month for 50MB but $65 for 100MB seems like a no brainer. I lose my mind over slow internet so if it drops out or lags during peak hours ill end up switching right away. Does anyone else know of any good cheaper internets? $80 a month is getting a bit anoying when ads for TPG and Kogan keep spamming me.

    • Having been on both, AussieBB beats Kogan / Vodafone out of the water when it comes to gaming. Reason being that their routes they use are non-optimal. Whereas on ABB, if they aren't optimal, you can ask and they'll try and fix them as best as possible, but generally they're pretty good without having to ask.

      • Yeah I agree, having just disconected Vodafone I would say their performance on my connection (FTTP, Mayfield POI) was 20-40% slower than Telstra and Aussie Broadband most of the time - higher pings too….

  • +1

Unlike a lot here who jump at any deal my main concern is speed and connectivity .
I let the save any dollar guys jump in and watch reviews .
This one BTW looks like a dud : https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/kogan-internet

  • -1

Do not use kogan, shocking service.

  • This is under NBNCo wholesale cost once GST is factored in.

What on earth are they sacrificing to make this work?

    Be weary.

    • +1

$120 marketing discount, then Normally $85.90/mth. Much lower margin than Telstra is the major difference. The more cheap same provider plans sharing on the node, the slower the speed.

    • I think it could be the new 100/20 plan?

      • +1

        Says 100/40 in the CIS

  • +6

If this is Vodafone white labelled as Kogan, your mileage may vary.

I am on FTTP and had 3 simultaneous connections last month - Vodafone, Telstra and Aussie Broadband. All on 100/40 plans.

Vodafone pings and download speeds were far worse than Aussie and Telstra at almost all times of the day and night.

We are talking 60 MBps vs 95 Mbps download speed on supposedly the same speed plans. My POI is Mayfield NSW (Newcastle and the north coast of NSW served from there).

I found Telstra and Aussie Broadband to offer almost identical performance to each other nearly all the time. 95Mbps most of the time, dropping to mid 80's sometimes after midnight.

Telstra did $90 per month for 100/40 + home phone - so I stuck with them - normally that would be $120 but they waive the $30 extra for 100/40 pretty quick if you threaten to leave…

    • -1

That means many more are sharing on cheaper Vodafone. If everybody moved to more expensive Telstra it would become slower at peak times.
