  Bank of China could have the union pay debit card, so you don't need to be a Chinese for this.

    Can confirm, we've got one. Walked into a local BoC branch and opened an account, the accompanying debit card does support UnionPay. Works great when on holidays in China, universally accepted unlike our Visa/MC cards which a lot of places couldn't take.

    Do note that you need to keep minimum $1k in the account to have the monthly fee waived.

  I'd rather pay more for Skybus once or twice than deal with Bank of China
