This is what I was waiting for since HL Alyx announcement!
    Bought it.

    • Why get the Rift S over the Quest though?

      • +1

More expensive, better graphics depending on PC capabilities and higher refresh rate. Obviously Quest has many advantages over the Rift S but I went for the Rift S too mainly because I got it on sale last time for $569 from Amazon, plus I also got $50 back from Zip pay as I paid through them.

      • +4
        • Quest performance is limited
        • Link is not available yet
        • Battery-life is another limiting factor
        • Games availability
        • Refresh rate
        • OLED (the only thing that made me consider it)
        • Higher resolution (hardly)

So it's Rift S (now for $500) vs Quest Link (Later for ~$800+) vs Valve Index ("Not available", ~1500)
All will require PC upgrade, only Rift S I can use with my current PC (GF960) until next gen 3060 will be available in III 2020, after HL:Alyx anyway.
For me personally Rift S is the most justifiable New Year gift.

Cosmos is also an option. But it will cost more than Rift S.

          • +3

            @lostn:

Cosmos is also an option. But it will cost more than Rift S.

Almost double the price, the tracking is horrendous, controllers are insanely clunky. It is not an option.

            • @PreddyPegasus: Where did you try it? I would like to get my hands on it myself.

              • +1

@lostn: Tried it at PAX for beat saber, was not "fun" to say the least.

I'd recommend having a look at Adam Savage's Tested channel for their Half Life Alyx gameplay/review on the various headsets. Also TFI's rant on HTC.

        • +1

Link is available now and the battery is always charged if you're on link

          • -3

@Scantu: The official link cable is not available. USB cables that work currently give lower quality graphics with PC games compared to Rift S. Will this change with the official link cable? Who knows

            • +2
              • @trielement: oh thanks's for correction. Do you or anyone else have that oculus cable? Does it solve the blurry peripheral video problem of conventional usb cables? If it doesnt, then oculus must have to do that to get the video data down a data cable instead of using the conventional video cable of Rift-S

                • @bobvegas: I have ordered a few days ago I'll let you know what its like

                  • @Draco: I ordered mine today, hurt to pay $130aud for a cable but it's one of a kind!

                    • @camshandez: Yep I hear you, can't find an equivalent for the same or less, however :-(

                • @bobvegas: Have received today seems to work pretty well. Can play my steam games that support VR such as everspace.would have to compare to rift s or similar to see what difference there is.

        • The only reason I considered the quest is because of the oled too haha, but I'm very happy with the Rift S!

      • +1

I would get Quest if it used the halo design. It's using a rubber strap which makes it front heavy and uncomfortable after a while.

        Halo redistributes the weight somewhat.

        • There's a tonne of videos showing how to mod it with a htc vive deluxe Audio strap, apparently improving the comfortability dramatically. At the same time increasing the total unit price a fair bit aswell haha. But I'm going to probably do it for that added comfort

      • I bought the kids a Quest for Christmas and I'm very happy with it.

        • Wireless VR is awesome as the cable is distracting and can get twisted even if hanging from the ceiling from VR bungee cords.
        • I'm very happy with the screen on the Quest.
        • Am also using it with Oculus Link and a USB cable + USB extension fine with Steam games.
        • I've hung a powerbank at the back of the headset as a counterweight at my son's insistence (it also powers the headet extending playtime) but my observation is people tighten up the overhead strap too much pulling the entire headset up the back of the head. If you loosen the overhead strap it fits better.

Cool story, when Valve announces Australian availability I might get one. Until then, having a great time on my Rift S.

        • It isn't superseded until Valve announces Index availability in Australia :)

        • so strange.. you normally have good insight with shit but you're being really weird and elitist here?

          • -1

@Kozhutki: I'm being weird and elitist for pointing out the obvious, that the Valve Index is the most technically superior VR headset of any available at the moment, and yet the people negging without so much as a single sentence of valid counter-argument are definitely not being mindless Lemmings just piggy-backing onto some smartass remark that still doesn't negate the fact that the Valve Index is better than the Rift S? Maybe you should re-examine your definition of "weird" and "elitist".

    • +3

Sounds like it will be pricey

      • +3

It’s USD$999, it’s going to be painfully pricey if it gets an Australian release :(

    • -1

can 5700xt hit 144fps at 1600p on HL Alyx ?

  • +7

its never been cheaper to access VRporn!…thanks ozB ;)

    • +2

Better definitely, but never will it be cheaper than Google Cardboard.

  • +1

I just want the Index to come to Aus… Volvo pls :(

    Good price

    • +1

You made me think about what a VR experience designed by a car company would be like. I basically imagined a car infotainment system strapped to my face, which would be a truly immersive form of suffering.

  • +1

Just got one gonna use it for FS2020 and Elite Dangerous. Thanks heaps OP! Cheap deal.

  • For those that have one of these already… Can you use it to watch like standard movies but obviously in a massive sized screen coz it's so close?

    • +5

Yeah, of course. You can adjust how big you want the screen to appear (how much of your field of vision is filled by the display is limited by the FOV of the lenses), and even play non-VR games in the same mode as well.

Also for anyone interested in optional accessories, you can purchase Oculus knuckles straps which can be found very cheaply on eBay ($12) which lets you strap the controller to your hands, similar to how Valve Index knuckles are normally worn.

And you can buy sweatproof silicone covers which line the foam padding of the facial interface, which helps to prevent your sweat from being wicked up by the foam and eventually causing it to smell. I recommend it if you want to prolong the lifespan of the facial interface foam, but note that the foam is quite easily replaced as well with 3rd party options.

Also for anyone interested in optional accessories, you can purchase Oculus knuckles straps(youtube.com) which can be found very cheaply on eBay ($12) which lets you strap the controller to your hands, similar to how Valve Index knuckles are normally worn.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but full-hand gesturing is not really supported by the Oculus API and I haven't seen any games implement it to the extent it's possible with the Valve Index, so whether your Oculus controllers are strapped to your hands or not, you still can't really do much with them other than reduce hand fatigue by not gripping all the time?

        • +3

It's really just a comfort mod, the Index-style strap simply allows you to relax your hands without dropping the controller. Good for long VR sessions but not absolutely necessary for casual players.

If you don't want to spend any money at all, you can make your own too. https://imgur.com/gallery/7AgJjeR

          • -2

@scrimshaw: Yeah I assumed as much, given the Rift controllers are designed from the ground up to be gripped so as to enable proper finger placement and proximity to the buttons/triggers.

The Index controllers are designed from the ground up to be worn over the hand and to have the fingers free to gesture for input.

Still, not a bad idea though as Rift controllers do go flying from time to time and can get a little awkward to hold depending on the control scheme for a given game.

    • current generation VR have low quality screens. You would never choose to use them for anything other than 3d/vr content that requires you wearing a headset. I don't even think Valve Index could be described as a new generation headset, it's just better quality, but really expensive

  • OMG waiting for this to stack with the $50 cashback from Shopback. Cheers OP!

  • -1

Thank you OP, wanted one for a long time and finally pulled the trigger with your thread.

  • What does this do?

    • +3

      I think it's for porn

  • This is a fantastic deal, I'm probably the only one here who bought a HP Reverb for way more though hahaa…ha.

  • I've been looking for a decent VR headset lately, pity I missed this. Hopefully Amazon do another sale for this or the Samsung HMD Odyssey+. Index will be a lot better but the price is going to be prohibitive for a lot of people.

    • Still for sale on oculus store, $1 more expensive though I believe

      • No 12% cashback though

    • It's available again at the same price now FYI

  • Grabbed this last night thinking it was a limited time offer, glad others get it as well, great deal, always thought VR was a $1000 afair, have tried these and 80Hz is plenty, besides you'll keep it longer considering your PC will be able to run 80fps longer than 90 or higher.
