Damn … that's some nice prices

Can you advise what your local store is?

  • OP, please also edit your title to say "Save $99" :)

    • +2

      Done

      • +10

Nice work on your first post :)

        • +6

I thought first posts always had to be about the unfairness of getting caught by a speed or redlight camera, or getting a parking ticket???

          • +2

@TheOtherLeft: Shortly followed by becoming DisabledUser8757854 right?

          • +2

@TheOtherLeft: … or the unfairness of having to fork out money because you caused an accident and your car wasn’t insured.

            • +2

@Ozpit: Or why is it my fault i nudged a pot plant off a window sill and broke it when i opened the window. Why is this adulting so damn hard.

  • my local store is selling for $159 and they cannot price match other stores unless it's in the same state

    • i'm assuming they asked which store had the discount … damn :(

    • +10

It's Big W, not OW, btw.

  • +2

    Anyone shucked these?

    • as in take them outta the case for use inside a computer?

    • If you wanted to do that you're probably better off getting the non-portable model from JB (currently $99).

      • +1

        link?

      • +1

Not if you want to fit it in a laptop.

        • Would these bad boys even fit in a laptop? Some of these pocket drives are pretty thick.

          • @AustriaBargain: Yeah, didn't think of that. Not sure, but would say this drive is thicker than 9.5mm. So would only fit into older thicker styles of laptops, maybe a 17" lol.

At least you have A chance, No chance with the 3 1/2" drives unless you want to install into large desktop which is probably what "ssquid" meant in above comment.

Comment on next post suggests Playstation will only take drives up to 9.5mm thickness max, so no joy there.

      • Eh?
Two totally different dimensions & usage scenarios.

    • +5

From what i've found so far, these are shuckable (apparently its only WD that solder 2.5's), but these are SMR so keep that in mind.

      https://mattgadient.com/how-to-shuck-the-seagate-expansion-4…

      • Yeah I saw that, some people say smr, some say not, very confusing.

      • Wouldn’t all 4GB 2.5” drives be SMR?

    • +1

Yes, works fine, proper sata port

  • +9

I've had about 4 seagate hard-drives over the years and not one of them worked longer than a year. I still have a bunch of wd and toshiba drives that still work. Has the quality improved at all?

    • +6

I’ve only had WDs and a Toshiba (though that was mainly an overheating laptop issue I was too lazy to fix) fail.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder

      • +7

Quality is in the eye of the beholder

Quality is (the lack of tears) in the eye of the beholder.

      • +2

Or you could cast your eye over : https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-hard-drive-stats-q3…

I admit I've historically been a WD person, more recently tried Seagate and Toshiba.

Thing people need to realise that even within a manufacturer there are good drives, and there are not so good drives. Enterprise drives for example are designed to work 24/7, while desktop drives use lower spec materials and electronics.

Regardless of drive you get, always have a backup so if a drive dies it doesn't have any negative loss of precious data.

For those lucky to have a decent internet connection cloud backup services like google drive or backblaze offer a set and forget backup system which has saved my bacon more than once.

Good price for 4Tb drive btw.

        • That was kind of what I was getting at. I’ll give anything a go. It’s not a black and white case of seagate/WD. Do some research, pick the drive that suits your needs instead of blanket statements like “this brand failed therefore I’ll never use it again.”

There’s no denying seagate had a few major screw ups with some of their products but it doesn’t rule out all products.

        • "Regardless of drive you get, always have a backup….."

The irony being that we purchase these drives to hold a backup :-)

      • -4

Seagate is shit, followed by WD and Toshiba.
HGST is the way to go.

        https://www.backblaze.com/b2/hard-drive-test-data.html

The larger drive capacities on all brands are doing better however.

        • +1

Toshiba 3.5" disks have been great for me. I think they're actually the old Hitachi designs based on a deal Seagate made with the EU when buying Hitachi's drive business. They licensed the design to Toshiba.

      • I've had probably more than 5 WD and a couple of samsung and toshibas fail on me over the years. The difference is, ALL of the seagates failed on me within a year. This was ages ago though and I've never touched seagates since. I was wondering if they've changed.

        • +1

Which is the whole point of my comment. I’ve never had a seagate fail on me. I’ve had other drives fail before but i haven’t labeled the entire brand as a failure but instead looked at the specs, reviews and determined if the particular models suit my needs.

    • +9

Why do you keep buying them?

      • I stopped after the fourth one died. I have about 25 hard-drives all up.

        • -1

You must have excellent movies on them, I’m envious

          • @Laziofogna: I work in video production and so need a lot of back-up space.

      • +3

I've had similar experiences with the seagate drives I had but I certainly wouldn't rate it 100% (somewhere around 75-80% would be more correct)

Only 1 drive has lasted longer than 5 years (which is when you should be replacing drives which contain important info).

For me, WD lasts 6+ years on a regular basis (had 2 of 8 fail) in a similar time frame.

Blaming people for being seagate staff though… lol

      • +2

Not just on reddit it seems lolololl

        • -2

If I can convince one person not to buy Seagate it is worth it.

Maybe that way they can improve the quality

          • +1

@Wiede: Only Seagate's that have died on me where those dodgy 3tb ones a few years back rest have been rock solid

    • +6

The funny thing is I have a bunch of portable Seagate "backup plus" drives hooked up to my consoles and I've never had a problem with a single one!

      • +3

Me too. I have 9 Seagates, 3.5" and 2.5", and I've never had one fail on me.

      • +1

So handy as extra storage for consoles.

    • Despite knowing this I bought two of these Hard Drives from the previous Big W clearance sale (with 1000 Woolies bonus points each). I mentioned this issue and people lost their shite.

    • +1

why do I always see people say this yet my 3 seagate drives have worked for years..

      • +3

Because it's those who have issues that bother to be vocal about a product.

        • That's true, but surely those with failed WD drives would also be vocal about it? Does Seagate sell way more drives (model-to-model) than WD, hence the greater number of Seagate complaints?

          • +4

@eug: No idea. Seagate seems to be a brand some people love to hate. It really doesn't make a lot of sense to me - all hard drives fail eventually, it's just the luck of the draw (and how you treat it - some portable drives have a tough life I think) that determines when.
I've had more WDs fail than Seagates but still happily use both - I just buy whatever is cheapest at the time and don't feel any pressing urge to denigrate WD because of the few that failed.

          • +2

@eug: It’s not all false accusations and internet conspiracy theories. Seagate have had some poorly designed drives in the past, including the ST3000DM001 that was involved in a lawsuit. I think after that it sort of just became a meme to complain about seagate.

            • +1

@SlappersOnly: This is spot on, a mate and I have lost 5 of these drives in the last 2 years.

            • @SlappersOnly:

Seagate have had some poorly designed drives in the past, including the ST3000DM001 that was involved in a lawsuit.

Oh, didn't realise there was a lawsuit. I had one of those drives - it failed. I also had a 4TB Seagate. That failed too. Sigh.

Years ago, I kept coming across dying WD drives at work. I even had multiple failures with their enterprise drives. I then switched to Seagate… then they started dying while the WD drives kept running. For our CCTV server I decided to get both WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk Surveillance drives. Two Seagates died, I got them RMAed, then the replacements died. The WDs never had a problem. I think I'll stick with WD for now, till they start failing again!

I think after that it sort of just became a meme to complain about seagate.

What do you bAss that on? ;)

              • +2

                @eug:

What do you bass that on?

It was more likely to be a barracuda :)

            • @SlappersOnly: I built 2 x 4 bay raid 5 ext esata storage units with these drives. Biggest dumbass decision I've made. Replaced like 4 drives before ditching the idea. I only touch the Enterprise drives from Seagate, but even then I question how reliable they are after reading the back blaze report.

    • I've had about 10 in the last over a decade and none have failed. Though now that I've said that, I've probably jinxed myself.

      I think you're just unlucky.

    • +1

Toshiba drives fail me more often, especially in exfat.

    • +1

Had 3 seagate HDDs throughout the last 10 years
All working fine on a Mac with APFS format.

    AMAZON PLEASE.

    • -2

      ??

    • +13

support oz retail, not yank oligarch

      • ok.

      • +32

When people imply I should support Gerry Harvey I laugh to myself.

        • +11

I don't think anybody is specifically thinking of HN when they say "support oz retail".
          mostly Big W, OfficeWorks, etc

          • +3

@BargainEnjoyer2022: he's the guy who's been crusading against online retailers, and was part of the big push to put GST on all imports.

      • +7

Isn’t Big W going out of business? And do you mean support Oz retail selling us foreign goods?

      • Amazon employees local people

        • +4

Many Amazon employees in the US are on strike right now, not all, until they get a decent adult wage, their mission to Amazon is if it can't pay their employees properly then "Close it Down!", not my thoughts, I saw it on US news today.

          • +2

@filenotfound: if they're pick/packers they'd be employed through an employment agency and not directly through Amazon. Which means they don't have much rights and can't unionize. Amazon can also get rid of them easily any time they want.

If these guys want to go on strike, believe me, they are extremely expendable and replaceable. They won't even be missed. They have no bargaining power over Amazon, and not even a strike will change that. The next day, Amazon can have an all new crew ready to go, and these guys will have lost their jobs there permanently.

            • @lostn: I very much understand. I thought it was the USA Amazon employees. It was actually India Amazon employees and France Amazon Employees, almost the same striking issue though.
I've never had a human interaction with Amazon that didn't involve an Indian female employee, it's an almost pointless situation if ur unhappy in India and even France, but a movement is there. have a hny!

              • +1

@filenotfound: I have heard really bad stories about working there in US and UK branches from watching documentary clips and interviews with workers.

You get something like a 15 minute tea break but it takes 5 minutes to walk to the tea room and another 5 minutes to walk back, so you effectively get 5 minutes. You can't be late back to work, not even a minute.

You're pretty much treated like cattle.

They were overworked so bad that there are paramedics outside on standby in case anyone collapses.

I would not recommend anyone go work there, but I also understand it's all necessary for them to deliver cheap prices.

I can echo your experiences with the Indians. I don't know if they are female or male, but every time I've live chatted or emailed them, they have Indian names. I'm not too bothered by this because they are trained to be very polite and courteous.

      • +1

Oz retail that enforces the oz tax, yeah nah

        • +3

How dare we tax people and pay for health, education, roads and other community needs

          • +2

@avinit86: Roads are shit, healthcare is barely passable, education is slipping, internet is below many third wolrd countries, and the RFS is underfunded. Why am I paying so much tax again?

            • +4

@Carnal: How else are politicians going to have expensive cars and parties? Do you want them to be able to catch a helicopter to be able to go 80km or not? Surely you want them to be able to take their kids on taxpayer funded overseas holidays? You wouldn't deny them these basic rights, surely?

            • +3

@Carnal: to pay for yank fighter planes that last less than 5 minutes -125 million dollars for a plane that burnt out in 5 minutes.

you buy a car from a mate that catches fire in les than 5 minutes and they demand payment - is that a mate?

the yank subsidising aussie pols won't invest in fire fighting equipment, won't readily pay all volunteers a cent but spend billions in America because aussies are an easy mark - every election proves that.

            • +1

@Carnal: How tight are those blinkers?

            • +3

@Carnal: Then go live in the USA, where health services and education are so much better.

            • @Carnal: for them to go on a fully paid family vacation to Hawaii when shit hits the fan.

            • @Carnal: Don't forget the 50 billion being spent on submarines- which will be obsolete by the time they are built.

          • +1

@avinit86: Most of our tax dollars are wasted on the political systems, politicians and blown out projects….
You should see the wastage, its unbelievable.

            • +2

@congo: Think you should all spend a significant amount of time in an actual third world country and then complain…

              • +2

@avinit86: I have spent my childhood in a third world country.
                That's entirely a different problem.

            • @congo: I can't watch Utopia anymore- it's just too accurate.

          • +8

@avinit86: the tax is going to the retailers themselves, not the government. We're already paying all of those taxes in the form of GST.

"Aussie tax" is when we pay higher prices for the same goods just for the privilege of being aussies. Especially eggregious in the case of digital software.

  • +2

this doesn't require external power right?

    • +4

      Nope.

    • +1

      Nope that's what 'portable' means

      • Partially.
Its also… dimensions, weight & that it's a HDD designed for laptops.
