Apple MacBook 12" 256GB $1259 @ JB Hi-Fi

550

Awesome product if you use Apple .. discontinued model and not replaced so a great chance to get the lightest MacBook ever.

btw .. I've used linux for 20 years and unfortunately linux & 12" macbooks is not an easy experience, so sorry Apple.

Very light, but very weak performance. Check some benchmarks if you're gonna use it for anything harder than web / office browsing.

Not true at all. I used to develop on this, 8gb mem, running Xcode, Photoshop, Firefox, Email and a few more. It handled it like a champ. The only time it slowed down was when I ran the simulator too.

I am not sure what you people expect, but never had an issue.

Agreed I use one of these (although the next model up). Runs everything I've thrown at it including Photoshop and now Pixelmator Pro, BIG excel/numbers docs and heaps of logins, apps and windows running at once. I've seen it struggle a bit in the heat being fanless so probably not the best if you're out and about in FNQ etc, other than that it's an amazing computer. From Apple I've had everything from 11" MacBook Air to 15" MacBook Pro and this is my favourite by far.

    • err .. do you expect a full power desktop CPU in this beast?

    • But the same goes for the MacBook air under any real load…
Basically the same piece of silicon in a similar fanless thermal envelope.
The final version (this one) held it's GPU clocks much better around the desktop and managed to not drop frames as much in basic MacOS desktop animations like the prior models.

Great choice for a school laptop. Got my 14 yr old one and he loves it.

    • +5

      Lucky kid!

    • +7

      Not sure why the negs

Some schools specify MacBook so parents don’t have a choice.

      • +5

Not negging buying one for a kid, but a school specifying a macbook sounds absurd!

        • +1

I've only seen it at private schools and it makes sense to have a homogeneous OS for setup/support reasons.

          • -1

@DonWilson: My school allows both, but he uses my Mac so a Mac made sense.

            • @enzso: Our kids’ school has a BYOD policy. MBAs would be most common followed by HP ultrabooks. Odd kid lugging around gamer laptops but not happy in the end as always nursing batteries. Never saw many MacBooks back when they were still being made.

            • @enzso: Sticking to one OS definitely makes sense to simplify things.

        • -4

Macbooks make sense for schools to recommend. Given their abysmal performance kids most definitely won't be distracted by playing games on them.

          • +1

@iseeyou1312: I used to play yugioh and gta:sa on a school provided netbook. Kids always find a way…

Great laptop had mine since 2016 and still works perfectly

    • Funny video. Good deal but the lack of a USB port is off putting.

  • Not bad for a high quality built ultrabook from Apple (except for the keyboard).
Mind you, I bought the 1st gen one for my mother in 2015, and it has zero problems, so your mileage might vary.

  • I'm on my early 2016 one, which had been great for work and gaming. Battery life is great, I'm still surprised by how long it lasts. I got it when I was looking at getting a new iPad then. It didn't make sense to go with an iPad when you can get a real laptop for about the same price. Of course, 'real laptop' is a bit of a stretch in terms of the spec compared to a non-Apple product. It does feel like I should be able to replace it with a Chromebook somehow. It's hard to do ctrl+i btw, because of the mental note of switching ctrl over to cmd.

    • It is a full "real laptop" in every sense, certainly over a Chromebook etc.
The same piece of silicon runs this as a "hotter" running laptop, just this one is underclocked with the fan removed.
Chromebooks may come in broad specs, but the OS is heavily limited in comparison unless you want to hack the crap out of it, in which case why?
99% of Chromebooks aren't any more powerful then this either.
Stick with it, get a 13" MBP or move to a nice modern 2in1 Windows machine ;)

      • Haha I'm too locked into the Apple ecosystem to get a M$ machine for a laptop, but haven't drunk enough koolaid to buy a MBP. So far I do find the applications work smoother on OSX, but games are really lacking. This one becomes very painful to run more mainstream games, it pretty much dies on anything ranging from Prison Architect to Hearthstone, I had to turn off the high-res for all of them and tone down the graphics settings. Whenever the FPS drops so much on those games, I feel like I've time travelled back a decade.

  • Dual core- do more

  • +2

    Gold colour only FYI

  • can i use fcpx with this one?

    • You can open fcpx, whether you should run it on a fanless dual core is a different manner, I wouldn't. A used 15" MBP with a GPU would perform much much better at a similar price.

    • Yes, i have the 2017 m3 model with 8gb ram. I use final cut pro x, and have turned off background processes/rending and used optimised media and it works fine.

Takes a bit longer to export than other macs but it’s suitable imo and i just do something while that is happening.

  • I had one of these until June last year when I sold it and got the quad-core 13" mbp.

I absolutely loved it - amazing if you do any travelling or need to carry it around with you all day. Its like carrying an iPad.

For short bursts - the performance is great. If you do anything more than that it WILL heat up and when it does it will slow to a crawl (it has no fan)

At 12” doesn’t it seem way too small?

    • not if you want something super small and light.

      different people have different needs.

you might need a 17" brick at 2.5kg.

    • as in the usable size of the text - even with dpi resolution adjustment.

      • umm .. do you have bad eyesight?

I use DPI adjustments to shrink everything smaller so I can fit more onto the screen.

I use a 10.5" Galaxy Tab S6 for most of my current computing. Can fit heaps onto the screen.

          I find 4k on a 32" too small. I think 2k on 32" best. 1920x1080 on 14" i find just bearable - all native resolution.

          eyesights horrible. glasses.

          • @CalmLemons: ok cool .. just different preferences .. all good.

            for me ..
            4K on 27" = too small
            2K on 24" = perfect
            1920x1080 = 13"

i'm happy that you understand the concepts, have tested, and know your preferences :)

i run my Pixel 4 XL in tablet mode too ;P

  • Too bad about the colour..

If anyone wants a second hand one for cheap PM me. Battery is old and will need replacing soon but everything still works…

  • Thanks OP, got one in Elizabeth St Melb. They had a couple left.

They have a demo, the keyboard was better than I expected. In any case, the right size and weight to carry daily…

OMG this thing is good. Installed Xcode, Python, Home-brews etc while browsing and emailing with no lags. I am really surprised. Probably not for gamers or 4K editors, but for coders and normal folk, it's a go. My MBP might be up for sale;-)

  • Anyone who got this deal tried checking their Apple warranty here;

    https://checkcoverage.apple.com

    Doesn't show up - which isn't good.
