Since when does TCL make phones… Now hanging out for a panasonic phone

    • +10

I've been quite happy with my TCL TV purchases actually, other than boot up times being a tad slow, picture quality has been great on each.

The brand gets a lot of hate for some reason.

brands that aren’t popular in australia are often huge in china and it’s sometimes just due to the product range they bring into australia. e.g hisesnse , tcl, etc and often they bring their cheaper range into australia based on what they deem australians want to buy.

look at xiaomi, unless you are chinese most people don’t know about them as they have a small presence in australia, you don’t go into myer, DJ , HN and see xiaomi rice cookers, digital scales, etc.

it’s like when aussies call preloaded wechat etc bloatware, if you are from china it’s an essential application.

what we get in australia doesn’t reflect the whole portfolio of a brands product.

        • +3

TCL is popular in the US amongst enthusiasts on AVS forum. Especially when they released their 65r17 series in 2018, set a new standard for prices on tvs with real HDR.

We got the basic model in Australia unfortunately

"look at xiaomi, unless you are chinese most people don’t know about them"

That should be corrected to "look at xiaomi, unless you are chinese or an Ozbargainer, most people don’t know about them"

I gotta get myself one of those.

  • How to claim the warranty is the biggest issue.

    • +3

      Easy. JB.

    • -5

Yeah of their tv warranty is anything to go by expect them not to respond to your emails or phone calls.

      • +4

If your worried about warranty buy from a bricks and mortar store. They have to honour the warranty, then they deal with the manufacturer for the RMA.

        • Is this the case? Why do I hear so many stories/anecdotes of (large) retailers walking away from warranty issues?

  • +3

    These review so VERY well.

And I've played with one for over an hour in store, I'm honestly in love.

    • I thought jb only had dummy display phones except for Apple, Samsung and pixel.

      • +1

Nope. My local has a live phone of literally every model they stock.

    • How close is this to stock android?
      Is there an AndroidOne edition?

      • Almost entirely stock.

        Unsure about AndroidOne

        • +1

love android one ….. for chinese phones it’s an easy way to sell handsets if people aren’t familiar with your brand or launcher.

        • So no bloatware & suckie themes like Samsung & the like?

          • @[Deactivated]: Nope. Zero.
Its by far the best phone ive used since my blackberry.

I want a zenfone6 as i intend to start traveling soon and dont want to take a video camera seperate; but this is so tempting….

It also has neat features like pairing 4 bluetooth speakers to the same output, and the ability to use the dual flash (not just one) as a flashlight.

Also the extra hardware button can be mapped to almost anything, in tap, double tap, or hold.

  • Band28?

    • Yes as per Gsm-arena & on other band checking sites

  • Compared to/ as a replacement for an iPhone 6s (apart from the obvious OS difference), most importantly camera quality, fluid to use?

    • +7

So fluid the phone identifies as a different letter of LGBTQ everytime you use it

      — > On topic, it's snappy similar to an iphone 8, if that's what you're referring to. Not sure about the camera though.

      • +1

We need plebiscite to use this?

      • i went from from iphone to android 6 years ago because i didn’t have the money to replace my iphone ..currently using nokia android one release 9, . i have never had the money again to get back to an iphone, except for the price, why would you change ecosystems if you already have all your stuff loaded and especially if friends or colleagues use face time and imessages except for how much spare money you have ?

i only get 2 android updates per handset, and you get more ios updates, the iphone is probably same price over 4 years.

if you neg this please explain why.

        • +2

i only get 2 android updates per handset, and you get more ios updates, the iphone is probably same price over 4 years.

I don’t quite follow you there.

          • @[Deactivated]: He/She meant not a monthly security patches but major OS updates. Normally most of Android Phones only provide 2 major OS upgrade except Google Phones with 3.

            • +1

              @Smokey010: With you now, thanks.

Of course the difference is apple drip feeds features. Its great they do support updates for 4+yrs, it helps them off course as older models hold their resale value. But I'd say 2yrs of android updates is about the same as 4yrs of apple updates.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: That statement is actually true: most Android phones (including Samsung) get 2 years (i.e. 2) major OS updates. Apple phones get 4-5 years of major OS updates!
So, from software support point of view, Apple is better than Android.

Android phone owner here (a family of 4 Android phone users). Have been since Google released Nexus One back in 2007!

        • the iphone is probably same price over 4 years

I don't expect the battery in my phone to last longer than 2 years, plus I aim to spend under $500 outright. This means I can buy a new phone every two years and pass the old one to someone else to use.

I also only buy dual sim so I can use the same phone for work and personal use.

    • Camera quality is about on par with the previous iPhone, before they went multi lens.

It wont win awards, but you'd never be upset with them IMO

      • Isn't this multi lense as well?

Smaller form factor would be good.

    • Camera quality - since it's a Snapdragon processor, you could hunt around on XDA for a Gcam APK…

      • What does this mean exactly? Snapdragon don't pair with good cameras?

Also, any ideas why this has 3 camera lenses on the back? Mixed focus in one shot?

  • Be aware, despite all the focus on display tech the TCL lacks Widevine L1 and can't play HD Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+.

    • Only in the app right?

You can still watch it in browser in desktop mode can't you?

Worked with netflix back in the day on older phones.

      • I'm fairly sure you can't watch Netflix 1080p in browser, max is 720p. You need Windows App to play FHD and 4K.

        • Thats OK, 720p on a screen that size would be more than enough for me :)

  • +1

gsmarena tells me this is their only phone. Hard to tell if they're serious about software updates.

    • -2

Then your source, and ability to google, is sub-par.

      https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/6/21049747/tcl-10-pro-10l-5g…

Only one currently in Australia, sure.

      • To be fair, the phones in the article that you linked to are yet to be released

        • That wasn't a requirement of his post; he just said it was the only one they made.

They've already passed wireless certification, so I can guarantee you they've made at least a couple by now.

      • The one you linked isn't out yet, like what Matt88 said.

And I said, "gsmarena tells me". That's very accurate. Maybe it's not me who has sub-par google skills, kettle.

  • You had me at "Obsidian Black".

  • But does it come with a Plex pass subscription?

  • +4

I picked one up yesterday, I was looking to get something, but did not want to pay over $400. At $399, with a bonus set of bluetooth headphones I said may as well get it (plus my other phone was starting to have a temperamental charging port).

I was looking at and comparing with Moto G8plus, Mi9T, RenoZ and 2Z and one of the Huawai models. In the end I went with the TCL plex I would say mostly because price; I could not find much in the way of negatives (relevant to me); and that it is very close to stock android.

One day of use, so far so good, set up was easy as expected. Has a pre-applied screen protector, comes with a clear case.

Sim & SD card tray is a little flimsy, but once in is totally fine. Had to shut off TCL watermark on photos. A little bit of bloatware, but nothing that is not quickly removed. I could not really find too much noted as wrong when looking up reviews. Usual negative was no HD Netflix playback.

The smartkey, as noted by others can be set up to do what moto-actions do.

Running Android 9, no info found on when it may be updated. I did read somewhere that an update will occur early in 2020, but can not find that now to confirm.

Overall, happy with it after an evening and morning.

    • Can get replacement charging / USB ports from Ali express for $2 for your old phone.

      • Doesn't that mean you have to open up the phone and possibly use a soldering iron?

      • I have had it for three years, a Moto G5Plus. Really liked the phone, but it was time to upgrade, seemed like the battery was starting to lose charge a little bit more often

  • -1

For a China-brand phone, no mention of any privacy snooping malware in the comments so far. Is it just too new to get the proper scrutiny yet?

  • How to get the headphones?

    • +3

The headphones box is shrink wrap attached to the phone box in store. Not bad, have paid more for worse BT headphones.

      • Yep, just picked one up and it came exaxtly like that. Thanks mate.

      • +1

More than what? …$399 for worse Bluetooth headphones?
Edit: more likely you were referring to the claimed $69 value that I just noticed… that makes more sense ;)

  • I was excited… But no water resistance?

    • Can't have everything for $250
