          • @lplau: Can the goverment (China-CCP) just look you up and match your HK-ID along with their advance facial recognition and thus you are considered HK'er if they link it back?

      • That's not true, Chinese government recognises HK people's Chinese nationality but not foreign nationality. But for the people from the other parts of China, Chinese government will do in the opposite way. That's 'one law, two explanations'.

SAR passportholders must be Chinese citizen, while HK ID card just means residency.

    • +2

I'm glad I cancelled my holiday to HK which is due next week.

      • +2

I’m in HK (Tsim Sha Tsui) right now and it’s perfectly fine. We haven’t seen any demonstrations - we heard there was going to be one on Sunday in the Central area, so made sure not to visit there.

Apparently tourism is down significantly and it is ‘quiet’ here are the moment (still feels very busy for this girl from Perth!).

        • +2

I cancelled back in October and rebooked to Japan :)
I don't want to take my chances with a young family as they will be coming along.

          • @kooldavid: wise choice, avoid HK until it is free

          • +2

@kooldavid: my friend is in HK and she says it's fine…however given there is so many other asian countries to go to like taiwan, singapore, japan, thailand..why risk it at the moment ?

    • +3

you are trying to intentionally mislead ppl here.

      • Do not exercise your freedom of expression if you do not agree with those black terrorists
      • Do not even take photo

You will get beaten to a pulp, douse with petrol and burn alive, throw brick to your head if you even have any voice against their vandalism. Your phone will get search by them (no need court order or warrant, they are the law) and even smash on the ground just if they think you are filming their criminal act.

      • +1

Ah yes I saw those too… it's terrible that those youngsters and people attack innocent citizens.
        I apologise for that.

The police should round up all youngsters in retribution.

      • +3

Dont worry, HK police is doing a great job.
A person is filmed being throw off from a hk police accommodation building yesterday.
They are doing everything to protect you.

        • -5

so the nazi-black terrorist doing better job to protect you. Oh wait, only if you don't have different opinion with them. What a twisted "democracy" concept, don't even respect different view and trashing and vandalising business just because the un-related owner's daughter have different voice.

And the recent HSBC ATM burning just because they have to follow the AML guideline. What a great critical thinking and education you got there.

          • +2

@samehada: Good example of 'whataboutism'. Nothing to see over here, look over there.

It's just so much easier than a cogent argument or some cordial dialog.

          • @samehada: I dont know what kind of education you got that make you think it is ok people got murdered by police/government becasue they do not agree with the system. I think you got a PhD in something….

            • @rayn7x: Maybe not at one of the "re-education" camps set up by Xi Pooh. Otherwise they'd be protesting too.

      • Make sure you keep your female family members at home: https://youtu.be/A8_YW8SkYBs :)

    • You forgot:

DO NOT SPEAK MANDARIN in Hong Kong.. or you will get discriminated against or have violence against you.
DO NOT go outside at night times because the flash mobs of riot attacks can happen anywhere, anytime.
DO NOT speak out against the riot's violence.. else you will have violence performed on you by HK people
DO NOT help clear away the rumble and fortifications that the rioters have put together or else you will get stoned until you bleed to death
DO NOT visit shops that have the word "China" within or have spoken out against violence (Maxims).. because wait.. you can't anyway since the riots have burnt down legitimate businesses.

      • +7

Lol.. get downvoted for speaking the truth.. Too many Sinophobes in this forum

        • +4

Too many people who have a liberal education that can see through state propaganda like glass.

In Australia we teach our kids persuasive arguments so they can discern the truth and identify when they are being lied to.

    • That's the case, you can definitely ask the police for help as long as you don't throw bricks.

      • They will tell you to 'get back', 'go away', 'find your own way', 'dont block police business'.

  • +4

Are they paying us those amounts?

  • -1

Not even if it was free.

I mean… I for one welcome our new Asian Overlords!

  • +2

Do not wear anything in Black color or wear a mask (even the new type of SARS already spreading from China, to HK and today to Thailand)

If you do, be prepared to get arrested. And hopefully you will be release in one piece or even alive.

    • +3

Are you in HK right now?

Everyone (I’s day 10-20% of people) are wearing medical masks and no one is being arrested. Can’t say what happens if you wear a mask while demonstrating - haven’t gone to see a demonstration.

      • i was there before , and I have to force myself to take off the mask (coz of the street is filled with TG) in front of the police just to min. the chance to get arrested for no reason.

        • There's a reason. It's because the protesters all wear masks and threw bricks/set fire….

  • +8

Heaps cheap tickets, it's pretty easy to avoid the riots just check the news everyday and you'll have a great time. Advise checkout the bottom side of HK island.

    • +8

      Username checks out

    • +1

The bottom side? Are you one of those flat-earth people?!? :P

  • +22

It is actually quite a good time to visit Hong Kong, particularly if you want to visit the theme parks.

We went in September. Disneyland Hotel was about a third off normal prices (although still expensive). Disneyland itself was super quiet. Five minute queues all day. Ocean Park was slightly busier, but only because they had a half price ticket offer. Queues were still short. The new Ocean Park Marriott was also discounted.

When we weren't at the theme parks, we stayed in hotels away from the protests - Midlevels or the south side of the Island are good, Sheung Wan is fine.

The protests are very localised, you are unlikely to accidentally stumble into one, and if you do, you just walk one block away and it's business as usual. But don't wear black or white and don't wear a facemask or you may be mistaken for a protester (unless that is your aim).

The bigger issue is the various disruptions - MTR closures, retail closures, ATM closures - but worst case scenario you just go to plan B.

    • +2

I think the most concern is TG residual which is invisible, I won't bring kid to there in this time.

      • +5

So far, the government has said there is no evidence to suggest that teargas poses major public health and environmental risks. However, it refuses to release the chemical composition of the teargas used by police, saying it would compromise their “operational capability”.

        https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/dec/04/nowhere-is-saf…

        • +3

          You trust that gov?

        • oh and these ppl are complaining about the dioxin level yet you again conveniently left it out. This basic science that dioxin is from things burning which is started by those black rioters yet they try to spread it as teargas cause.

          • +1

@samehada: ahh no wonder they said the bush fire smoke/pollution is more harmful than the TG's

            Makes sense.

          • +4

@samehada: Australia become the most dangerous place on the planet according to your logic

            • @rayn7x: what logic? you are trying to mislead ppl here again and again. The whole context about this debacle start about those ppl complain about the high dioxin lvl in HK and trying to put the blame on teargas and asking about the chemical used.

If you even bother to Google it and read it before deflect the comment off-topic.

              • @samehada: what logic? what is off topic? i continue from your comment the high dioxin is due to burning. isnt that what you say? does it make no sense now?

          • -1

@samehada: so, should we ban barbie here?

  • +8

Gotta take extra care of the Wuhan pneumonia in additional to the riot, actually not a good time to Hong Kong.

    • Is that China?

    • China reports first death from Wuhan pneumonia outbreak @2020-Jan-11

      • Amazing! Such a great country to contain such a terrible outbreak. Pray for their well being.

      • How many people died every year from winter flu in Australia?
FYI the population in Wuhan city is more than half of Australia as a country.

        • +2

          you are so funny.

          • @rayn7x: Look now who is affected this China virus. eh!

    • +2

Due to censorship it is not possible to determine how bad the situation is with viral outbreaks in China.

Compare that to the response of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to the 2019 outbreak of lung illness linked to vaping products.

  • +8

I've been quite critical of China so I don't think I'll ever visit unless the dictatorship gets toppled.

Kennith Roth was denied entry into "China" - https://twitter.com/KenRoth/status/1216359911690514433

      • -1

Any country has the rights to deny entry.
Do you know how many people get denied on LAX every year with a legal visa?

        • +3

He wasnt denied previously, why now? What makes Mr Roth denied entry? Did he murder someone?
No I do not, care to let me know and tell me why they were denied?

          • @Turd: U can ask LAX for the same question.
Sometimes they won't bother to tell you.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: You mean ask U.S. Customs and Border Protection and not "LAX". LAX is an airport.

So on previous occasions Mr Roth was allowed in but just now he isnt allowed in, What does that mean?

              • @Turd: U can ask Chinese customs and also ask us customs.
They will check your social media records. For any shit talking about USA you will get denied on arrival.

        • +4

The 50 cent brigade is strong on this one!

Still too expensive, Hong Kong should be free

    • +2

      ありがとう

    • +1

What you did there. We see it.

  • +5

It is a very good time to go to Hong Kong now as the hotels there are now so cheap. I just came back from Hong Kong a few weeks ago. I paid only AUD40 for a 4 star hotel with rooftop swimming pool and hotel room facing the Victoria Harbour. I went to the Victoria Peak and it was not crowded at all. Their public transport was not crowded and you could easily get a seat. But just don't wear black or white or a face mask. You should be fine.

    • +2

It's funny how wearing a particular shade of grey and/or a face mask can make you a target.

Face Mask is good as so you dont breathe in the dioxins that are around in the air.

    • +6

There was a tourist from Mainland china, with wuhan pneumonia symptom arrived in HK and refused to be hospitalized and insist to stay in her hotel room in HK.
No wonder the hotel room in hk is so cheap nowadays.

      • +2

Same as the SARs epidemic. China authorities didnt tell the HK Gov till much later when it spread. Why did they do this? Save face?

        • +5

because they cannot handle the epidemic themselves, so they have to "export" the SARS so hope someone will be able to tackle it (luckily HK did but with a great cost and lost of lives)

        • +5

They do this because the CCP system is broken. Due to being a dictatorship they can't admit failure at any level or themselves and their family risk ending up in a reduction camp, so they they hide problems and try to pass the buck to someone else.
This kind of system will destroy itself from the inside.

          • +1

@subywagon: Like how they "lifted millions out of poverty"?

In fact they just reduce the definition of poverty to $1/day. Anything above is not poverty?

            • +3

@Turd: At what cost? What cost to their freedom, dignity and even environment? They just give them enough to be complacent. I'd rather be poor and free then fed and a slave. Like how they killed and starved millions throughout the cultural revolution? Like how they killed hundreds during Tienam? Like how they've locked up millions of Uyghurs in concentration camps? Have fun in your Matrix.

              • +6

@subywagon: They say it's not concentration camps it's "re-education". For the better good. ONE CHINA ya know!

@sweetie collection. Which hotel is that?

      • Ramada Hong Kong Harbour View

      • +1

I'd say there's a zero missing in that quoted price.

        • I did pay AUD40 for a harbour view hotel room. You can do a google search of that hotel and you can find the prices for January and February. The cheapest date is 22 Jan 2020 (AUD29) and the most expensive is 26 Jan 2020 (AUD61). In February, the price is around AUD40-ish. Don't use Trivago. Just use Google search. You will have a list of sellers with different prices. Choose the cheapest one. Give it a go.

    • +1

      Which hotel is that?

    • how do you delete a comment?

  • +1

Travel insurance won't cover you for any cancellation, injury etc caused by the current unrest. Too risky for me.

    • -1

Some will, if purchased before HK protests were specifically declared an uninsurable event.

I recently relied on the same provisions to cancel most of my trip to Bolivia due to their political unrest and was paid in full.

      • -1

Not sure how that will help people buying flights under this deal?

  • -1

Safe to stay within the European countries, less corruption.

    • less corruption.

May be only you don't know XD

      • -2

What we do know is the Asian countries have a lot of corruption. We know this, Google corruption in Thailand, Bali, Singapore, lots of videos scamming tourists with the police openly taking money ie. Jet Ski scam. Try and find the same on European countries.

I guess the European countries may be corrupt to a higher level, Asian countries are corrupt from the standard police officer, and it goes up from there. There is a reason you are living in Australia, and not the Asian countries lol, and yet you're trying to defend Asian corruption, lol.

        • trying to defend Asian corruption, lol.

          I am not.

Politics are dirty everywhere just how they play it. Of course Asian corruption are so much higher.

  • +9

Yeah, hard pass from me. I always wanted to visit Hong Kong growing up but unfortunately the CCP have destroyed it, turning it into an authoritarian nightmare straight out of a George Orwell novel. The HK police and CCP agents disguised as them are truly disgusting. They look and act like troops from Half Life 2, or Nazi Germany. Plus I wouldn't want to be exposed to the massive amounts of toxic tear gas they have released which will cause masssive health problems now and in the future.

  • +6

Sorry and sad to say but there's nothing attractive gong to HK these days:

    1. Shit fight between protesters and HK police. Both sides are stupid (after months of analysis) and I don't agree with either side. There's more rioters among protesters, as the political nature of this is long gone, and the HK police are incompetent and also abusing their power.

    2. The general atmosphere of HK has changed. There's blue (pro police, pro China) restaurants and store and there's yellow stores (pro democratic, anti police, black clothes, yada yada). Tear gas residue, random raids, random police checks, can't wear face mask even for legitimate reasons. A lot of people are not going out at night worrying about when the protesters will strike.

    3. Pneumonia outbreak (thanks China!). Although this isn't a real concern as there's less people from China coming to HK nowadays.

    4. Strong US dollar against weak AUD resulting in a near 10 year now of AUD against HKD. Factoring the lack of sales tax there, HK is not the shopping haven it once was and you can get the same stuff similarly or cheaper price here, especially with the deals here. Although here are some find stuff that's only available in HK that worth buying (mainly edibles) but not much.

When you go on holidays you want to relax and take a break and not worry about the above. "I have spoken".

    • +7

Would you just stand idle while a dictatorship started taking your freedoms away? I know I'd fight like hell if take over was imminent by authoritarian dictatorship like the CCP…

    • +3

fight between protesters and HK police. Both sides are stupid (after months of analysis) and I don't agree with either side.

I disagree the protesters appreciate the freedoms that the communists want to eliminate, and would prefer not to be sent to re-education camps.
The 2019 Hong Kong District Council elections held in November resulted in a landslide victory by pro-democracy candidates indicates wide community support.

      • In before they say that the elections mean nothing and will not change what the government does/do.
