$1200 for 4gb ram and 32gb of slow storage.

That price would make Apple blush.

  • +1

Not bad in supported till June 2024 and machine the Lenovo C340/S340 for price too with a better screen (although they have a longer update support time).

  • +1

This looks very good on paper. Quick google shows it selling for just under $1100.00 at most aussie retailers right now.

  • +1

Reviews seemed to be pretty good, alot of comparisons to the Google Pixel Slate.
Bit the bullet and got one.

  • +1

32GB eMMC internal storage is the killer. eMMC can be fast, but I doubt it in this case. The storage size is too small even for a Chromebook. Yes I know you can add external storage, but somethings need to be on the internal storage.

    • +4

Is this one a better option then for $100 more?

      • +2

Yeah at that point the os will be the limit - I wonder if 8gb of ram will ever be utilised by chrome os.

        • +1

My Samsung Chormebook Pro (M3 6Y30 64GB) runs smoothly with 4GB Ram without any problem. This HP one seems better, but I still prefer my Samsung Chromebook Pro for the better screen and lighter weight.

      • +2

Thanks for that. Order the better one. These things can run Android apps, so it's not a bad way of getting a nice Android Tablet.

        • +2

You have to remember that few apps are available unless you side load/developer mode as Play Store sees ChromeOS as Android version 6.

          No Minecraft for example.

    • +1

If you think of the target market for this price point (school kids), then that should be plenty for the demands of the class.

If I hadn't bought the C340 previously, then I would jump on this for the screen resolution/size differential.

      • +1

I'm in the same boat, don't quite regret my purchase but…

I still haven't opened my C340 so could return it and get this hmmmmmmmmmmm

        • "pax & Arcticfox" Just wondering what both of you have done?

Sure, these models represent good value, especially the cheaper one, but for most school kids

and adults alike, the C340 is a great buy at that Big W deal offer.

          • +1

            @ozhunter68: Hey ozhunter,

In the end, I kept the C340. I had a long hard look at the things I wanted my Chromebook to do and the C340 managed to beat the HP for my following reasons:

            • The versatility of the 2-in-1 was just too good. I use it in all the configs you can make (even portrait sometimes), which is something the HP could not match with it's flimsier snap on keyboard. It always feels solid and it does not wobble or flex once I've set it up. The HP could not do that.
            • When I looked at lots of video reviews of the HP, the screen looked like it was almost too heavy when attached to the keyboard. When ever users used the touchscreen, it always seemed to wobble and shudder under the smallest screen presses. That would annoy me no end.
            • The C340 gave me $100 back effectively making the cost $299 at the time. It cost me less and could do more of the things I needed. Hard to argue with that.
            • The Lenovo Duet is coming out soon and seems like a better deal than the HP in every way. Apparently it will be very affordable too ($400-$450ish I reckon - will be $279 US).
              Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_6GtFaeXj4
              Site: https://chromeunboxed.com/lenovo-chromebook-duet-tablet-2-mo…
            • Lower screen res on the C340. Yeah it's not 1080p but it's a very good 720p that helps to keep it going for approximately 10 hours. Much happier to have longevity over pixels.

Other minor stuff, don't think will matter to most other people :-)

            • @Arcticfox: Good thinking ( with logic rather than emotion ) and for me that would have been my choice too for similar reasons you state, stability being important for me too.

From what I have seen and heard most of these 2 in 1 hybrids are top heavy with screen/tablet end not being able to be tilted back far until it tips over.

Also the connection can be iffy too, just read comment below.

Unless you mostly use the HP in tablet mode or you need/must have the stylus feature,

the C340 convertible is a much more solid choice, especially for that price you got that for.

            • @Arcticfox: Howdie. Wanted to bring some balance to the discussion. Based on my usage requirements.

Versatility. The X2 does everything the C340 does, but the screen can also be used as a standalone tablet AND it can also be used folded with the keyboard tucked away and not facing downwards. The X2 comes with a stylus. So I can't see how the C340 is more versatile? The X2 feels super solid and has a minor amount of screen movement.

              Wobble. Minor.

Price. Yes the C340 is a lot less but it is also a lot less chromebook.

Lower res - Sure is! The X2 is not 1080p it is 2K. So 1600p.

Battery life - X2 has a rated battery life around 10 hours as well. Longevity over pixels?

              Other X2 benefits.

              8GB RAM
              Faster processor
Bigger screen (0verall the screen of the X2 is amazing!)

So yes the C340 is a bargain for almost $200 less. The X2 is just a level up and for me ticks all the boxes.

PS. I do wish the X2 had support until 2026 like the c340 though. :-(

              • @boxall: Hey man,

The configs I use mine in are on soft surfaces like my bed alot of the time. If I fold the keyboard so it faces down with the screen diagonally facing me, it stays solidly in place regardless of my movement on the bed. I can also put it in a tent like config with the keyboard facing backwards like this ^ I have not seen the HP do those in a way I would see as rock solid.

                In this review:
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdX4TGJWUhw
you see it wobbling at the 1.15, 5.00 and 7.40 minute marks. At 10.55 hes not even touching it, but his elbow movements make it wobble on the desk. That would annoy me (I'm saying just me mind you, so I don't speak for you or anyone else).

It costs less, but I wanted something slightly rugged so what you see as more, I saw as unnecessary for my needs/extra $.

I think the 720p screen is fine, especially for the size of the screen. I don't plan on spending my majority of time watching HD/2K content. It's just there if I want to watch something on the go. Other wise I'll use my 65inch OLED TV at home. I enjoy the content over the pixels anyday ;-)

Most sites seem to say 8ish hours for the HP and the same sites say 10 hours for the Lenovo. I just took that at face value because the diff in screen res seemed to make sense. I didn't really base it on anything other than that, if it's wrong, you probably care more than I do…

8GB RAM, faster processor, bigger screen? makes sense, it costs more. The 4GB RAM in the Lenovo has never effected me in any way. IF you need 8GB of RAM then our uses must be different, so you made the right choice for you.

Never said the HP was bad, it was just above what I needed it to. The Lenovo was spot on for that.

I don't even care about the support going to 2026. It cost me $399 (or $299 with $100 extra to get what ever else I want). I won't be upset if it doesn't last past then, cause it only cost me what it did.

  • +3

    “Full of personality”.

Yep, that’s high on people’s device wish list.

  • +2

Just bought the 499 dollar one, the CPU benchmark was about 50% faster then the 399 one. And the 650 dollar one was not much of an upgrade for the price.

    • +2

Yep same here, on difference appears to be m3 vs m5 which on ChromeOS isn't going to make a much difference at all.

  • Does the $499 come with a Pen or not. Hard to tell.

    • +2

      Pen is included

      • +1

That's great as the pen is Not included with similarly priced/speced model at Officework, need to go up to the $1497 model there to get the pen included.

So good deals here for both of these.

  • +3

Thanks OP- Bought the $499. As above, a much better option that's a bit more future proof.

  • +1

Just bought the $499, thanks OP!

  • +1

Tempting! I mostly use a cheap Chromebook (<$200) for media while falling asleep. Would like a higher resolution but the 1366x768 ain't so bad. Concerned the 2-in-1 may be less stable when sitting on a mattress.

    • Did you end up getting the super deal from JB HiFi the HP 14 Chromebook with the FHD IPS screen for $239 + $100 coupon/gift voucher. Not sure which model <$200 chromebook and screen size you have, but that was great deal for you I think.

  • +3

The $499 one (HP 12.3in 2K IPS Touch M3 7Y30 64GB eMMC Premium 2 in 1 Chromebook (5PY09PA)) sounds really good. The M3-7Y30 is a decent little processor (have one in my GPD Win 2) and I think it would really make Chrome OS fly with those specs. If I didn't have the Lenovo C340 for $220 from the previous deal then I would have probably upgraded and got this!

  • +2

Nice deal. I picked up the 8GB model from Umart this afternoon. Very impressed so far!

    • How do the speakers sound ? The shop near me doesn't have stock unfortunately so got to wait for it to ship

      • +4

Very clear, but don't expect thumping bass. Pretty decent for video and maybe some types of music, but you'd want headphones (it does have a socket) or perhaps a decent bluetooth speaker to rock out.

        • Just got mine this morning and the right speaker has a crackling sound especially in voices. Did you have this issue? The left one did not have the same issue as the right one

          • @markdownhunter: No crackling sound with mine.

            • +1

@diabolic: Thank you for the info, Hopefully the replacement unit is good, its a very nicely built Chromebook that's for sure

              • @markdownhunter: Did you end up getting a replacement unit? If so, hows the sound on it?

                • +1

@ozhunter68: I rang up HP this morning and they said a authorisation of replacement letter was sent to Umart and then called umart and was told that I will receive a brand new product within 2 days time at my local umart Hurstville NSW so fingers crossed it's a good unit I'll update when I have it on hand

                  • @markdownhunter: Thanks. Did you wait this long before contacting HP, although there were only 2 working days in between with long weekend. Hope your second one has better balanced sound.

                    • +1

@ozhunter68: I received the laptop on Tuesday morning then returned it to the store literally 2 hours after . The laptop then got sent to west Ryde and got there Thursday,I then contacted them and asked for some information so I could contact HP and was told they did not have the serial number yet entered into the system ( I was talking to a lady in a call centre so there probably was a bit of processing time required).

Called HP Friday with a RA number but they said I needed a serial number and case number from umart before they could share information with me, but by the time I got the information from umart it was to late to call HP Friday afternoon. They have been pretty quick to sort this out considering it was public holiday Monday only awaiting a email confirmation to collect from the local store in Hurstville.

Kudos to Umart and HP for being quick, needed the Chromebook from today for work but quick turn around.

Have you got a problem with your unit too?

                      • @markdownhunter: No, did not get this model, although it looks pretty good, except for speaker issue which I hope you will get sorted soon.

I have had a HP 14 chromebook for 4 years and last year upgraded to a newer one as well as getting the HP 14 on sale at JB last weekend with hopefully a nice FHD IPS screen and adequate performance for my needs as a back up/travelling computer.

Got to love the easy updating and maintenance on chromebooks :-)

                      • @markdownhunter: "Alex01" Just wondering how you went with your replaced unit's sound?

See "boxal's" comment below, his replacement is also unbalanced volume, not sure about crackling sound though.

                        • @ozhunter68: i got a text message at noon and just updated th chrome os update and the speaker issue so far sounds good with dialogue . pretty happy with the return process

                        • @ozhunter68: No crackle in the slightest.

      • Reviews have indicated this is certainly a weakness.

        • Have not checked reviews, but is bad sound on one channel a common problem?

          • @ozhunter68: No it isn't.

            • @boxall: So what weakness are you referring to then indicated by reviews you have seen?

              • +1

@ozhunter68: Two things. Speakers are ok. Nothing outstanding. That is what the reviews are saying.

My issue is that the right hand speaker is louder than the left. I have not seen this reported before.

                • @boxall: Gotcha loud and clear this time. So most likely your replacement should be fine

but as expected going by reviews, ok sound out of both channels equally.

                  • +1

@ozhunter68: Replaced and still, the sound is unbalanced. Not much I can do.

                    • @boxall: Oh, still unbalanced. Is it making a crackling distorted sound from one channel?

If so at what volume can you really notice?

Maybe get in the habit of using a blutooth speaker, can get some decent really small ones now that will have much better sound compared to many tablets/laptops, and if you get one you can pair two devices to simultaneously, than handy for HP and phone.

                      • +1

@ozhunter68: No crackle and I will cope with the unbalanced sound now I know it was not just my unit.

                        • @boxall: That's good news then.

Many phones and tablets, as well as some older laptops only had mono/one speaker, as well as some top quality phones such as HTC 10 and others have two speakers, one for mid/bas and second mid/treble which also takes a bit of getting used to.

But once you know/accept that's how it is, you get used to it and adjust.

                          • @ozhunter68: To be honest, can't see me using the inbuilt speakers a lot. I do like L/R balance though.

                            • @boxall: isn't there a balance setting on volume properties? Oh wait this is a chromebook hmm…

  • +1

Hey OP, on the website it says 4 days for this sale, but on this post it says 31-01-2020 sale ends, can you please clarify? Uncle wants but doesn't want to decide until he has a physical look at it :)

    • +1

Hey Eric, sorry for the confusion. Something happened with our systems and the promotion dates changed over the weekend. They have bee reverted and both laptops special will end 31-01-2020.

      • Thank you for checking that for me!

        • +1

          No worries :)

  • +1

Hi op, Does this model comes with digital pen?

    • +1

The $499 model does at least.

      • +2

Both models come with the pen

  • Worth $200 (the $499 one) more than the C340??

    • +2

I think if compared against C340, the m3-7Y30 model will be materially better and assuming you’re ok with the form factor vs convertible then I’d probably spend more. But that being said if you’re able to get the C340 for $250ish or less with discounted Woolies gift cards, credit card points (since UMart has a surcharge from memory), etc then I’d probably go C340 for half the net price.

  • +1

Just came back from office works to check out the C340 and X2 for my little one as she requires a chromebook for her school BYOD. Both machines are very nice, and if you are looking for something solid for around 300 or less then go for C340 but personally screen on X2 is something I would pay bit more for.

    • You were lucky to find an X2 in an Officeworks store as they are no longer stocking it widely, maybe on clearance.

Just looking at specs and not seeing both in person I would assume the screen on the X2 would have to be nicer ( especially after seeing the original/rrp price $1197 ), but how much nicer for how many extra $ ?

  • +2

i brought a 250 2nd hand Acer non-touch chromebook early last year. it has since become my primary drive during the day , cause thanks to BLOODY SERVER GUYS way of UPDATING windows 10 i had to battle drivers everytime it updates, I only boot that thing up for gaming now. The Chromebook I got has a corei3 CPU with 8GB ram, i am able to run 20 tabs in chrome, listen to youtube, SKYPE Gmail google doc, Microsoft apps all at the same time without issues.

This X2 reportedly able to run Linux software, it also retain all the Android App ability, hence all the photoshop what not can be run and use further down the track with lesser compromises. My biggest issue after reading and watching reviews with the X2 is the lack of backlit keyboard and the speaker !

  • Is it possible to have 2 systems on a laptop
    ChromeOS and Windows

  • +1

    Netflix offline possible?

    OneNote with pen works?

    • +1

      Netflix offline is possible.
      https://www.google.com/chromebook/howto/watch-netflix-offlin…

From reviews I saw, the app is unoptimised and pretty laggy on most chromebooks, including this model. But it improves alot if you use Onenote through a browser, which supports the pen and stylus.

      • +1

Thanks. Onenote needs to work offline for me.

May just stick with my iPad Pro for now.

  • +1

Thanks OP, pulled the trigger on the $499 one ($520 with handling and delivery). Been on the look out for a while and am glad I held off from the other recent deals.

    • No worries :)

  • +1

Grabbed one. Couldn't resist. Very very impressive. First experience with ChromeOS and Chromebooks. Nice!

    • Enjoy :)

  • It may be my mind, but the left speaker is quieter then the right. Will monitor.

    • Definitely quieter. Anyone else?

      • Yeah I noticed the same, it's minor but it's there.

        • Getting it replaced. Hopefully they are not all the same. Mine was quite noticeable.

          • @boxall: Hey boxall, I'm sorry to hear about your issue. Please contact the Umart support team on [email protected]. They will be able to help you with the warranty request. We apologise for any the inconvenience.

            • +1

@UmartBuddy: No worries, HP on whatsapp have been great. They are doing a return request direct and then I just rock on up to Umart to swap over.

              • @boxall: How did you go with your second unit?

                • +1

                  @ozhunter68: Replacing today.

                  • @boxall: Tomorrow. Umart have been a little interesting.

                    • @boxall: Replaced and still, the sound is unbalanced. Not much I can do.

                      • @boxall: I received mine yesterday and my left speaker is softer than the right too, it's not really noticeable as there isn't much channel separation when sitting in front of it. I only noticed it by blocking off each side and comparing the volume.

                        • @yippy: Design feature. One thing I was impressed with however was the way Chromebooks recover after rreplacement…all the apps came back!

  • +1

Don't really need it but ordered one of the $499 X2 earlier today.

  • +2

Been using mine ($499) as my daily driver. Running two external monitors. Feels faster then my 2018 i7 15" MacBook Pro!

Only area it lacks is seamless Microsoft integration which is not surprising.

    • What resolution are you running on the monitors? Do you know if it can output 3440x1440 on an external monitor?

      • +2

1920x1200 and 1920x1080. Haven't got anything higher sorry.

        • Cheers.

  • Has anyone had issues with the connection between the keyboard and the tablet?
I've cleaned the slots at the bottom and at certain angles when I push the screen back and forth the UI jumps continuously between laptop and tablet mode. It wasn't doing it last week.

    • Mine is not showing that.

    • +1

@Room Temperature Are you still having this issue?

      • Yes I am, intermittently and it's more noticable when it's on my lap as opposed to a table. But happens everytime I use it now and it can get really annoying with the UI constantly switching back and forth.

        • -1

Hi Room Temperature you can lock the configuration to a particular mode or set it so it asks you before changing. By default, it's set to automatic mode switching without notification or permission:https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c04856156.

          • +1

@UmartBuddy: Thanks for the heads up, it doesn't fix the problem but it does stop the UI switching which was my main complaint :)
            Cheers!
