You may have noticed Oreo becoming cheaper in the last year or two….
They used to be made in Australia, now they're made in China :\

    • Are you sure? Then melamine contaminated milk powder may be added.

      • +2

        Oreos don't contain milk.

        • I believe every biscuit contains milk powder.

        • +2

Its not the milk I'm worried about, its their overall food ethics (or lack of) that I'm worried about

What the oversea parent company demand from those factories and what they actually do that worries me!

For example, a friend working in an exporter of Seafood from Viet Nam tells me to NEVER EVER eat seafood from there.

        • +7

@xception, Practically anyone who works at any food place will tell you never to eat from there. I'll tell you never to eat from Pizza Haven because when I worked there we were told to use mouldy tomatoes and black slimy mushrooms and have heard that another store re-used the cheese from within stuffed crusts if they weren't used that day. It's not just overseas companies you have to worry about, local ones can be just as bad.

        • there is no pizza haven anymore

        • @lou knee

To be more specific, they dip the fish in "special" chemicals that makes the fish from a stale looking fish to a fresh looking fish for weeks

        • And in Australia and the US they gas fruit in "special" chemicals to keep it looking fresh and stop it from going off.
          What's your point?

      • Are you sure? Then melamine contaminated milk powder may be added.

Melamine is still healthier than all the trans-fat in the American version.

My brother, who was literally addicted to these no longer buys them cos they're made in china. He has a phobia of FOOD coming from china.

      • +3

Its events like this that deters most pplz….

      • +2

how about people coming from china? don't pretend we don't all think it lol

(I'm of asian apperance, if that makes any difference)

        • He's not racist toward people at all, considering we are from asian decent too. He just doesn't trust food from china or from chinese restaurants even in Sydney.

        • +1

Why would you worry if its from a multinational company? If you grow a third arm you could sue to for millions if not billions?

On the other hand, oreos are made by a cigarette company and they have the best lawyers in the world :(

        • +1

Why would you sue? A third arm would come in handy!

        • +2

lol a third arm complements my third leg

(alright, somebodys gonna drop that obvious asian reference/stereotype)

      • +4

And Australians are racist and lazy. Love stereotypes.

        • i prefer the notion that we always have shrimp on the bbq all day, everyday… :)

My middle boy, 14yo, also has them every night after school with milk as his "snack"
might have to stock up at this price.

Melamine and Milk, now there is a catchy food name.

  • yeah they are made in China now, I stopped buying them since then.

  • +1

knowing China, twisting and licking might be the very last thing you'll ever do

I was in China in 2008 when the whole melamine drama started to go down. Scarily, I only heard about the melamine contaminated milk by reading Australian newspapers online. No reports at all in China, no recalls. Baby formula remained on the shelves in the supermarkets the whole time I was there (5 months).

I wonder how stringently they test Chinese-made food when it arrives in Australia? Disturbing.

    • +1

The melamine scandal has had lasting impacts. A Chinese relative living in Australia was asked to bring over as many bags of Australian milk powder with them when visiting China as possible. The locals no longer trust milk products (especially powdered milk). More melamine contaminated milk was found this year destined for ice cream manufacturing.

Having said that, I wouldn't hesitate to eat biscuits made in China. The foreign owned corporations test all their products and would not allow contamination for fear of a global scandal. Just imagine if Nabisco allowed melamine laced products into Australia. I would however hesitate to eat products destined for the local Chinese market.

    • +1

I doubt that the test any. I still see some banned products in the shop during the Melamine scare.

For the Taiwan DEHP food scare few months back, there wasnt much news about it locally. Had to check other asian news as well regarding what product was effected.

  • like my Tim Tams better but this is a good deal.

And here I am, planning an overseas to China on a eating spree.

    • They also make awesome thickshakes! A few oreos, big scoop of vanilla icecream & a splash of milk & you've got the best damn thickie you can want! :D

    • they also are good crushed up for cheesecake bases. Chccy chinese cheesecake yum!

Fact - Oreo's are actually vegan friendly, no milk or animal product. Fact - Oreo's are and always have been made in China for Australia. Fact - all Asians are good at maths and know karate. Now that's all in the open…

    • -1

Not all Asians know karate, im Asian and i don't, so that is not fact
Fact black white yellow people are all human, whether you accept it or not,can we just :
If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

I do believe phunkyfeelone was being sarcastic and mocking all the people above who were stereotyping all Chinese (and Asian in general)food products as containing who-knows-what toxic products.

Honestly, we have so many food recalls and health scares in local foods that don't get anywhere near the attention of the Chinese ones. It's just so much easier for the media to make a big scary story out of Chinese food when they don't have to worry about pissing off the local companies that buy advertising space.

      • +1

and live peaceably with all women too….don't be sexist now when you're lecturing phunkyfeelone

    • I'm Asian but I don't know Karate, I only know Kung Fu fighting, and I'm from Chinatown.

If your Woolies store stocks Dairy Farmers milk, they're currently offering a 300g pack Oreo free with the purchase of a 2litre bottle of full cream Dairy Farmers - sells here for around $3.38, so given that the 300g pack of Oreo is nearly $3, not a bad buy.

    • My Woolies stopped stocking Dairy Farmers ages ago, not sure why?

  • Yes, do not eat food from china, boycott it all, it is all trash. Watch out for fruit and vegetables from NZ, never buy anything from NZ because they order garbage from China, repackage it and call it a product of NZ. They are scam operators.

Why the hell eat Oreos made in China??? even if something is cheap does not mean I will buy it.

  • just check iga express parramatta today - sell at $2.09 :P

  • This should say WARNING MADE IN CHINA, RISK OF DISEASE.
