Golden Duck Chilli Crab Seaweed Tempura 110g Half Price, $7.50 at Woolworths (Selected Stores)

720

Bought these for a few friends to try last time it was on special when introduced and everyone (except me) absolutely love it. Full price is $15 a pack which I think is rip off. At half price thought is a very good deal, even cheaper than buying this from Singapore. They also have a salted egg favor chips which I think its not worth it even at half price. You are better off getting this https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/63582/calb… which is also at half price.

This is a very popular gift from Singapore. I had been told that tourist and locals queuing up for it. Please not this product has Seaweed, very strong fishy taste and it spicy. You've been warned!!

Also note expire date is estimate. Apparently Asian Groceries discount in Woolworth does not follow the usual cycle.

  • is this frozen?

    • No, more like a ready-to-eat snack.

Nah, they are like a bag of chips (crisps). This particular one is seaweed coated in tempura batter, but they also have fish skins and regular potato chips (crisps).

The Salted Egg Fish Skins variety is the bomb!

      • +1

they are like a bag of chips

        $15 for a bag of chips ??????

        • +7

Mate, just wait til you check out Irvins Salted Egg Fish Skins…

        • Dried Seaweed can easily go for $100+ a kilo.

      • Don't go the :SnakYard Fish Skins Salted Egg
Costco and some asian grocery stores sell it.

Its cheaper, but the fish skin they use isn't high quality, so there is quite a few pieces which would have a bitter taste in them. Also they aren't as crunchy as the Singaporean ones.

    • +1

Don't know about Singapore, but I was buying them for about $50HKD ($9.61AUD) in Hong Kong, I believe.

    • Google online its about $8 SGD, so this is even cheaper than local price.

Woolworths been pulling out some great Asian deal lately. Like the Nongshim Noodle deal $3 for a 5 pack (made in Korea). It was so good that some Korean restaurant near Townhall clear up all the floor stock. I was lucky to grab three while they were paying for it.

    Chilli Crab Seaweed

    Thanks for clarifying. HAHAHA

I was puzzled when I've seen Golden Duck first at Woolies - $15 for a bag of "chips"?

But I've got Salted Egg Fish Skins at 50% off last week (they were clearing it in my local store).

As said above - they're da bomb, better with something cold to drink along. Definitely worth trying.

  • no stock near me

  • the chips ones are better than the fish skin ones IMO

  • Not available…

  • $7.50?! YES PLEASE! the seaweed is better than the fish skin IMO

  • 7.50 for 110gm of chips… woooooow

  • do you eat it with rice?

    • +2

You could if you really wanted. Just like you could eat a bag of regular potato chips with rice. (It would probably be pretty tasty, but that's not how it's intended to be eaten.)

    • 7/10 with rice

  • Couldnt find them at townhall..

    • I already reserved a few at another store.

Try to order it online. I just get two more at the Townhall store from online order.

    • They're on the level above

      • Oh man. Didn't even realise there was a level above ground. Wasted my time looking near the chip section

  • I tried the salted egg fish skin. It was spicy! Didn’t expect that. Not bad but Irwin original was better. I hope more brands comes out

    • there are heaps of brands that do it but the quality isn't as good as irvins

    • They should. It's legal now

  • This one is everywhere in Singapore. No need to queue. The queue is Irvins.

    • No queue at irvins cos of the coronavirus everyone is avoiding travel. Bro just came back on the weekend

  • Some really wealthy people in the Ozbargin community here. $7.50 for a pack of 110g chips ??? Who would have thought !!

    • +1

I bought a bag of Irvins for $25. Sue me - I can afford it! :P

(No please don't, I really can't…especially after buying a $25 bag of chips!)

      • I'm glad that my kids don't have that sort of expensive taste, I wouldn't be able to afford that in their lunch boxes !! ;)

        • +1

Damn…my kids probably won't even have a lunch box, because I spent all our money on $25 chips! :)

        • +1

no-one is giving these chips to their kids. it'll be gone most of the time before it even hits the pantry cupboard

  • the crab seaweed tempura is the best among all (include irvins) i'm suprised they sell it on woolworths, never seen it before

  • +1

why not Tao Kae Noi ?

    cheaper everyday price

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/tao-kae-noi-tempura-seaweed-…

    • because its not salted duck egg flavoured

@1.90 for 40grams that's still $5.22 for the equivelant rate

your paying too much for seaweed

    • Tao Kae Noi is good too. I like the Big Roll and Wasabi Seaweed.

  • didn’t know they sold these at woolies

  • Where about's in Woolies are they can't find them

  • Thanks, bought 2. Actually allergic to crab but the gf should like it 🙂

  • I just read the title and got a bit confused by the amount of different foods for 1 product but I really want to try it now.

  • Has this disappeared off the site?

  • If anyone’s looking and in the area, just grabbed 6 bags of the Chilli Crab Seaweed Tempura from Brickworks Burwood (VIC). Stock showed 25, but there was none on the floor, so had to get the manager (two different people actually!) to check out the back. Manager found a box of 12, and I took half - so there should be at least 6 left, as of right now, if anyone wants some!

Same deal at Chadstone (VIC): both showing in stock, grabbed 6 bags of the Salted Egg Potato Ridges from out the back - a couple left in the box (didn’t see how many). The Chilli Crab Seaweed Tempura also showing as in stock, so probably some out back as well (didn’t check).

    So:
Burwood - definitely Chilli Crab Seaweed Tempura
Chadstone - definitely Salted Egg Potato Ridges (and probably Chilli Crab Seaweed)

Yes, I just spent $90 on chips! ahahaha

    • $90 of chips, lol:

      • Tasted them yet? Are they really that good? Can't get over these prices for the quantity. This crab one sounds pretty tasty though, interested to know about the egg yolk chips too.

        • Had them both before.

The Salted Egg Fish Skins are my favourite (they are awesome!). Then probably the Chilli Crab Tempura, Salted Egg Crab Tempura and Mala Hot Pot Fragrant Mix - all great too!

The Salted Egg Potato Ridges are probably my least favourite of the lot - mainly just because the potato chips themselves aren’t the most amazing chips. But the salted egg flavour is great, and overall they are still pretty good too - I obviously like them enough to pay $45 for 6 bags! aha :)

  • So is it duck, crab or seaweed?

    • Mostly Golden

    • seaweed tempura I believe, so.. chicken?

    • +1

if you don't know what salted duck egg is then i'm guessing this isn't a product for you

  • why are these so expensive?

    • Importation tax and currency x fees

      • but they were expensive even in their home country.

  • Town Hall just got 2-3 boxes in last night.

  • Will give these a try when I get a chance to go to Wollies.

Got awfully confused on what it was: Golden Duck Chilli Crab Seaweed Tempura? Oh, Golden Duck brand. Singaporean chilli styled Crab with a seaweed tempura base.

    • +1

It’s tempura battered seaweed, with Singapore style chilli crab flavouring (chilli crab being a famous dish from Singapore of crab in a mildly spicy tomato and chilli-based sauce), made by the brand Golden Duck.

      • How wrong I was! So it's just seaweed. Covered in a tempura batter in chilli crab flavour.

        • Yep! :)

(It does have actual crab in the chilli crab flavouring - “made with real crab meat”)

  • These are not available in many woolies. Seems to only be areas with a high asian population.

    • Just check 2 WW stores online. None left and the stores are in Asian populated place.

      • which 2

  • These were half price at VIC QV a week or two ago.

  • Man we got shafted big time. This is around SGD 7 bucks normal price yet they are charging us AUD 15 bucks.
The importer wouldn't be paying SGD 7 each, more likely SGD 1-3 each plus tax, duty and fees, so maybe around AUD 9 to 11 each to make the same margin as they would have in Singapore, yet they are selling it for more here :(

  • I did some searching couldn't find this at chips aisle… Where are they? I did online search made sure there's stock

  • +1

Bought a bag. Tasty and different, but I am certainly not seeing any justification for these obscene prices. It's about a $3 snack at best.
