In The Event of a Lock Down

Has anyone thought about what activities to do at home in the event of a lockdown? singles, couples, families. Perhaps would be useful to share our ideas on here. I saw a post of a man in china sitting by his bath tub fishing lol

Re-painting our house
Baking bread since no fresh bread

I’m assuming lock down means everyone stays at home hence no one working and nothing is open except essential services like hospitals, pharmacies and GPs.

You’re hypothetically In a lock down and your want to paying your house???

    • +2

DIY, internal walls and kids can help out.

In China, people didn’t really have time to prepare for a lock down so very minimal choice of activities. Most ppl took the opportunity to clean and declutter, cook daily (many do not cook in asia as it’s cheaper to eat out or too busy to cook), catch up on tv shows etc

With all the talk of a possible lock down, it’s not a bad idea to plan activities in case it happens.

With all the talk of a possible lock down,

        Lol.

Please stop listening to Kochie and Tracy Grimshaw.

Eh The government did say it was likely to become pandemic and to be prepared for 2 weeks worth of food and emergencies in case of self quarantine/lock down.

Looking back now, china bought the world a lot of time but most countries did not use the time wisely. They went all out to protect their people and slow down the spread. The new cases have fallen and many provinces have no new cases reported for a a week +.

The purpose of lockdown was so that they could identify the cases and clusters which was families. They could eliminate everything else such as gatherings, shopping centres, schools, work place etc Households had to report daily temperatures. Health workers go to their homes to test them, isolate close contact and monitor them for symptoms. Must quarantine even if asymptomatic. With this type of strategy, they could finally turn the table.

The govt made quick decisions such as declaring testing and hospitalisation free for everyone, extending prescriptions to 3mths (1 mth), people can order script via wechat, medication delivered to their homes. Basically any concerns people had were addressed to enable quarantine.

It’s not a widespread virus i.e if you grab someone off the street or 200 ppl and test them they most likely negative. It can most definitely be stopped.

The earlier the better but will be more difficult once you lose that window of opportunity.

It’s crazy that RACGP and govt still advising ppl to see their GPs (poor infection control), why do ppl need a pathology referral? cut the red tape, you only need their history to see if it meets the criteria.

Under the alert now, for example a korean man came back from overseas last week and has a temp, if tested negative he is not required to self quarantine. Only China and Iran. Even though we have heard multiple times that you can test negative many times before testing positive. Time is the essence, time is the safest and time will tell.

I work in Health and we have ppl coming without calling first, putting staff, sick patients, doctors and so many others at risk. We have sent quite a few this week for testing. The medical centre is located in Westfield! infection control nightmare.

My ex workplace had the entire family of a confirmed case today and they all live in the same house. They are close contact yet are not required to quarantine or separate. No one is monitoring. If their test returns negative then they are free.

With these lack of measures, no surprise if cases keep going up.

It’s stressful being in contact with potentially infected ppl daily.

            @sal78:

everyone stays at home hence no one working and nothing is open except essential services like hospitals, pharmacies and GPs.

Again, our government is not going to "close all businesses".

If your workplace is stressful then I highly recommend you discuss with your employer. :)

            • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: It just depends if any cities have a major outbreak. Regardless of whether businesses are closed or not, no one will be going out unless for essential reasons.

Amazes me that many ppl here still not taking it seriously. Close contact family members going around, a guy who should be in quarantine goes to woolies 🤦🏻‍♀️

Doctors all over the country are unhappy about how this has been handled.

Already ppl who are scheduled for surgery are now being told another 6mths. They said the reason being hospital must preoare for coronavirus outbreak.

              • @sal78:

Doctors all over the country are unhappy about how this has been handled.

                Where did they say this?

              • +1

                @sal78:

Doctors all over the country are unhappy about how this has been handled.

You mean like the doctor that came back from overseas and continued treating patients despite showing flu-like symptoms?

          • +4

@sal78: Actually didnt the Chinese government come out and admit they moved too slowly and tried to hide facts that they shouldnt have and otherwise they could have caught out the virus much sooner and possibly stopped all this? They then made the officials in Wuhan take the fall for it and held them all responsible. We could have had an extra month or more and a lot less deaths in Wuhan and China if the government had come out much sooner than trying to hide it from their general public.

            • +1

@lonewolf: They moved pretty fast. Within 1-2 weeks they had locked down Wuhan and many major cities. They had drones to ensure ppl stayed inside and even went as far to barricade front doors.

Then they could start identifying cases and contact tracing. Many provinces with hundreds of infections have been able to stop the spread.

Imagine if it was the US.

              • +1

@sal78: I believe it was actually more than a month after first reports. Chinese government came out and confessed that they messed up because they took too long. The outbreak in wuhan first started getting reports early December or was it late November. But the government went after the doctors who started to report it. Then once it got big they came out and announced they had made a mistake and the wuhan officials all got blamed.

              • +1

@sal78: Too late to stop people falling dead in the streets of Wuhan though.

          • @sal78:

why do ppl need a pathology referral?

For someone who works in Health you sure know little about the bigger picture. Filtered testing is already +1 day result depending on collection time, imagine if everyone with a fever or cough could test, result times would blow out.

            • +1

@arkie0: This is a different situation, it’s a pandemic. When people are going to gp for a referral and risking infection control protocols. What if they have to catch public transport? what if the clinic is inside a major shopping centre? what if there’s no available rooms to isolate? what if staff have no PPE? we barely have any masks left and gov has not given any masks, our suppliers out of stock.

Examination is not needed since it’s history taking. If they fit the criteria for testing then they should be tested. All our doctors agree.
Look at the lady that walked straight into Mater ED and now 15 hospital staff are under home quarantine.

Then there’s Sth Korea that are testing everyone who needs or wants to be tested. By mass testing, they can obtain better data, statistics and understanding of the virus.

In China, they come to your home to swab you.

I know what I see and do every day. We are testing ppl every day. If one turns out to be positive, we will all be quarantined and practice closed. Why do we have to risk our lives and we all have family. We are not properly equipped. Look at how many health care workers are already infected due to poor infection control.

              • +1

@sal78: What you've described is an appropriate response once the infection curve starts to increase, but I think at this stage that's an overreaction.

                • @arkie0:

once the infection curve starts to increase

you mean once shit hits the fan going out of control where contact tracing no longer viable when it spreads within the mass community ?

that'd be a little too late

imagine it spreads into aged care / old folks home

                  • @dcep: None of us are experts (I think), so in saying that I'm putting my trust in our chief medical officers around the country to plan and choose the best possible outcome for the public community.

I understand I have old parents at risk too but the fear is just making people stupid and illogical.

          • @sal78:

The government did say it was likely to become pandemic and to be prepared for 2 weeks worth of food and emergencies in case of self quarantine/lock down.

When, who said it and where's is it posted

        but the paint smell….

        • +5

It will do wonders for your potentially fatal respiratory illness.

        • one room at a time

  • +28

My wife and I can probably come up with an activity to occupy us.

    • +133

Well, that would be 3 minutes of your 2 week lockdown… What will you do for the rest of the time?

      • +16

        Probably take up knitting.

        • +4

Better prepare the knitting kit now lol

      • +40

3 minutes? What are you, a marathon runner?

        • +22

Just assumed they meant more than once…

          • +67

            @pegaxs: lol "more than once"

it's not my birthday all year round…

        • needs time for the blue pill to work

    • Scrabble?

      • +2

        Gin

      • +1

Better Scrabble than Monopoly, least they want a divorce.

    • +3

It would take her 14 days to list all the ways you have disappointed her in the sack. Boom!

      • +7

        Wife, is that you?

  • +3

    fap

    • +5

You’ll need to stock up on tissues for that. Need to get in and panic buy before everyone else does.

      • Plenty of Quilton aloe deals for Amazon on OzB recently. I stocked up!

      • +3

        Have you looked at Coles/Woolies?

        Everyone had the same idea.

      • +4

Tube socks will be the next thing to sell out.

      • Collect em all in a container.

Use it as a glue on rainy day.

        • Or you know, as hair gel. Has the added advantage of being cheap and organic.

  • +34

I'll probably post more pointless comments on various forums.

  • +9

Dust off my eneloop collection, that should keep me busy for a few years.

    • +5

      What am I doing?

      • +6

I think he wants you off his eneloop collection…

        • +1

          "#beetlejuicing" etc.

  • +8

Lose big money trying to day trade

  • +1

    Spend more time on OzBargain

    • +3

      Browsing those Quilton $50/roll deals.

  • +1

Catch up on my tv shows.

  • +1

    Bush walk.

    • +3

How big is your home?! :O

      • +1

Land is sufficient for the kids to walk and climb, but we are located near a lot of bush/semi-bush and if our area was in lock down, it'd be easy to get into the bush without notice.

  • I have a large garden that needs lots of work done.
I could do some house painting.
I could read some of those books I have in my reading pile.

Two weeks will pass pretty quickly.

    • +1

Same. Need to work on the back garden. Lots of wiping down the house and clearing and throwing out.

Many thousands of books to read in between the documentaries and lectures to watch.

That's if we get any free time from the two toddlers.

    • +7

What is more likely to happen, is that I will be expected to work from home via VPN.

But, the elimination of the commute is still a plus.

  • +28

Look, my Steam library can last me for a few life times.

    • +4

      mine too

thanks to Ozbargain I have 100 Steam games bought on special but never played

    • +8

Yep, my Steam library… plus Switch backlog, plus PS4 backlog… plus Xbox Game Pass… I kinda want a lockdown.

    • I haven't even started playing Witcher 3. By all accounts, that alone could sap up a whole two weeks, easily. Not including time spent on sustenance.

      • I'm back on it right now, playing one of the 20 hour expansions. RIP.

  • I have a lot of hard drives with content ready to watch but I really doubt I would even know to stay inside given I don't watch or read any type of 'news' except for shit that pops up here.

  • +2

    Play video games!

  • +11

This could spark the next "baby boomer" generation.

    • Was thinking the same thing. At least if everyone is quarantined the amount of teen pregnancies and one night stand babies will decrease.

  • +4

    Start a course on Udemy

    • +16

Start 13 concurrent courses on Udemy and fail to finish any of them.

      • +3

        pffft only 13?

  • +1

Play though my steam library for sure

  • I'll be making diy hazmat suits out of bog rolls for my family and pets.

  • +1

10000 pieces Jigsaw puzzles, never enough time for those at one go.

    • great idea!

  • +7

Damn I work in a hospital, I will probably still have to go to work.

    • Yep…Overtime may be

  • Have you…. some person on TV had seed packets to grow veggies…. no soil… no sun…. and when would she be able to eat the produce?

People are going utterly stupid….. are those buying toilet paper more sick than those affected by the virus?

  • +1

Stock up on frozen vegs & meat.

And go through my Steam backlog.

  • +5

from what I see in the news, most people use the extra time to take more poos.

    • +5

It's because people will no longer be able to shit at work so having to buy toilet paper for the first time in years.
They have forgotten that when you pay for it yourself you only need a few squares.

  • I have HEAPS of 360, Wii U, and PS4 games I've never played

  • +1

I have a desk job so I'd probably still be working but just from home. It will probably business as usual for me but casual everyday aka in my PJs!

  • -7

    play video games of course.

come check out Paradise and Ruins brand new 2D MMORPG for Android.
    Free to Play
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paradisean…

  • +3

I can finally watch all of One Piece. By the time I'm done scientists will have the cure for cancer.

  • +3

go thru all the udemy courses we have been accumulating throughout the years.

  • +2

Start working through my Steam backlog.

  • If you run out of games you can just play with yourself.

  • Probably a lot of board games with family and maybe read those books I bought using the 50% book depository cashback!

  • +2

My company (or management) really doesn't like us working from home, but now in the event of a possible lockdown, they are rushing like mad to try and get everyone approved and ready to work from home. Last thing they want is for us to have a "free" holiday and do nothing. So for me, business as usual but from home!

  • In event we have to shoot zoombies we need to purchase guns and ammos. Oh I forget we're in Australia not in the US.

  • Read books

  • +1

I see Aldi have 48 pack emporia dunny roll on special Wednesday the 11th. $14.99. Good luck getting in the store on that morning.

  • dust off the old ps1 and play all the final fantasy games. at 40 - 80 hours each, that should keep you entertained for a while.

  • Business as usual, I never leave the house

    • +1

but when i can't leave the house, i want to even more

  • Lockdown is completely the wrong term. You mean self quarantine.

    • +1

self quarantine apply to certain ppl i.e travelled overseas, unwell, close contact etc

      lockdown applies to everyone.

If community spread keeps increasing then it will be more difficult to contact trace and once gov thinks it is pointless then lock down is the next course of action
