My Pannie S10 50" plasma is on its last legs. Besides the obvious stuff like size, res, etc., how would this compare black-wise (eg. dark scene in movie) and for sports?

    • +1

my 12 year ago 42 Panasonic is almost on the same rd. would like to know how this compares

    • +4

Never owned a plasma unfortunately… These TV's are OK for me for movies, but I generally don't watch in the dark. I think it'd be a downgrade for sports.. The hisense R8 65" at around $1200 last month would have been great value for movie watching and OK for sport.

Some examples of current options that would perform better than this:

      55" OLED at $1600??
      65" Samsung RU8000 at $1400
      65" Sony X9500G at near 2k

    • +6

I have the last 65” Panasonic Plasma and recently bought the Hisense 65R5 and am more than happy how they compare. I have it in a darkened room and am blown away by the quality of the picture. I’d go for it at that price.

Thank you for the info fellow OzB'ers.

      Price.

Can you find an 65" OLED anywhere near $716?

        • +13

Yes the size does matter in some cases. But again, you aren't finding a 55" OLED for near $716 either.

          • @picket23: how does this compare to the recent tcl posted yesterday???

            • @striker5950: Not sure sorry mate, no experience with any TCL TVs

            • +1

@striker5950: TCL use the Android TV platform, so are better if you are going to use the TV OS as your main Smart TV viewing experience.
Hisense use their own Smart OS platform on this "R" series TV, which is the better choice if you are using an external box such as the Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, or Amazon Fire Stick 4K for example.

            • @striker5950: I believe TCL one is Android TV and this one normal smart TV.

              • +3

@Viku82: I care more about the screen quality, colors, motion and viewing experience.

its surprising how people only compare the software as a deciding factor (where you can easily throw on $100 a xiaomi android box on any of them and have a better android experience than both native os that comes with both TV's)

          • +1

@picket23: so people rather a 65" LED instead of an OLED 42" because of it's size? Fair enough

        • Most people watch FTA, YouTube, Netflix or bootlegs. Those thing would be fine on a 1080tv let alone a 4k oled.

People buying a TV for bluray or remuxes already scrolled past this deal.

    • +7

$1000 (which hasn't happened yet) is still 40% more expensive than this TV, and that price is only for a 55", while a 65" TV has 40% more area.

40% more for 40% less screen = no deal

    • +1

I would not get a OLED if I was playing games on it. Although they have mitigated burn in a little with pixel shifting, its still not there yet. OLED is really only good for movies.

      • What about QlED or quantum pixel for gaming?

      • +1

I have been using 4k LG 55" OLED for gaming for over 3 years, hooked up to a Pc and consoles, and would strongly disagree with you. No image retention at all, super responsive and best picture quality I've ever owned by miles (used to go through Tv's every 12months looking for the "one") OLED are great for gaming and everything else. And this is an older moldel; I wonder if you own one and if not why do you steer people away from them if you don't.

        • I agree. I have a C7 and have the exact same experience.

    • +2

I guess because we all value things differently. I bought a Hisense 55" 2019 model (55R7?) for ~$750 in a special offer, as ultimately it did everything I wanted for a very reasonable price. I don't watch TV nearly as much as most people, and visually the Hisense is so good as to not be able to justify paying at least double the price for OLED.

I also didn't want to risk getting an expensive $2000 TV only to find it had that awful "mushy" sound quality where you have to blare it at nearly full in order to understand the dialogue. I've seen enough expensive televisions from friends and families to want to avoid that. You can distinguish the words on the 2019 Hisense really well even on a volume of 12-20.

      • +2

If you care about sound you really should get external speakers

        • True and that's exactly what I've used since 1998 - I'm very fussy about sound, expensively so. Anyone remember the DSP-A1? Hard to beat even today for actual quality/quantity…

However, the basic Yamaha soundbar YAS-108B is excellent value and will make today's TVs sound so much better. It's often on sale around the $150 mark. I have one in my home office/reading room. I've also found that it's ARC inout works pretty well with most TVs so it's generally easy to hook into most peoples systems. I do some A/V installs for friends/family/good customers and often use this as a test tool as ARC is such a fussy thing to get right across brands etc.

          • @freddofrog42: I got that particular soundbar for my mum today. I was quite surprised how decent it was. Good price too at $119. So much better than the crappy aldi one we had.

Never could get the ARC function to work on both soundbars unfortunately. Maybe this particular Panasonic tv we're using is fussy about it.

I would never buy an OLED in its current state. My partner leaves the tv on IDLE a lot as she tends to our kids etc. I regularly game on it. Burn in is a problem. On top of that, the quality ones are way out of my price range.

      • can i ask what you mean by IDLE? a screensaver kicks in after about 15 minutes if you are on a static page like the tv guide etc. we game regularly and have no image retention or burn in after 2 years.

I got this TV a few weeks ago and don't see any benefit to the HDR being on, it actually has quite washed out colors when using HDR with an xbox one x. is anyone else getting good HDR performance?

    • +2

I get that when using HDR on my Sony as well — have nfi what the benefit of it is.

      • +1

I think its just the brightness of these mid range TV's is not enough to properly display HDR but im not sure if i just have some wrong setting toggled.

      • What Sony model TV do you have? Low-mid range TV's all suppoort HDR but they can't properly display it. generally only high end LED and all OLED TV's can display HDR as it was intended.

    • Have you tuned it yet?

      • If by tuned you mean adjusting the settings then yes.

    • Play around with the settings on the TV, i had to muck around with my hisense abit for my X, i fould that putting it on Dynamic improved it a fair bit

  • I wonder if they would price match this I store? I might pop in tomorrow and try my luck. Thanks for sharing OP

    • from my previous experience, they won't.

  • +1

    What a steal.

  • Hmmm currently got a 2012 Panasonic Plasma ST 50 inch. Would this be considered an upgrade, a sideways move or a downgrade? The price is tempting.

    • +1

Definete downgrade imo partcularly if you watch sport.

      • Thanks for feedback. I love my Panasonic but would love a 65 very soon.

  • -3

Can anyone please recommend a TV around this Range?

  • There's so many TV to choose from, this looks okay if you're coming from plasma or 1080p led, but if not look for other options.

  • For those who collected in store, did you need a Ute or SUV?

    • +3

Yes. You're supposed to transport it upright to prevent the glass from cracking.

      Carton box dimensions (W x H x D) : 1629 x 1005 x 220 mm

      • thanks, hope they allow for a scheduled delivery date so I can make sure someone is home when they arrive

        • They should for large appliances/products

Just bought a fridge through the same eBay sale, and got a call from their delivery team to schedule a delivery date.

    • +2

Once you get over 55” it cancels out most cars.

I remember talking to GG warehouse pickup guys who told me that plenty of people turn up with their hatchback thinking they can slot it in. Or even into the back of a Commodore or Falcon.

It’s a big TV inside an even bigger box.

      • $10 Delivery is a no brainer tbh, usually they charge $80-$100 for Delivery if purchased in store.

    • Bought one for my parents a couple of days ago, fit in the back of my Tiguan with the seats down and the box removed, still sitting in the foam though. They love it.

      • Did you have to make it up-right or you could lie it down when you transported it back to home?

        • Had it lying down flat, easy enough to measure the space you have and see if it'll fit.

  • -1

What is the refresh rate? It only shows smooth motion rate, is that a way to mislead into thinking its higher than it is? Assuming it’s 50hz but saying 100hz smooth motion.

  • Are the feet reversible ?

    • +1

No, but there's a second set of slots for an alternate install about 25cm in from the outer slots so if you were to use those you should be able to fit this on an 80cm TV stand.

  • Slightly too big.

Any good deals/recommendations on a 55 inch for the bedroom. Mostly used for Plex TV Shows/Movies and Netflix.

Just got this TV today - IN Store. The minimum price they could match was to $726, so i went ahead with it (not ozbargain spirit, i know). If anyone has any questions shoot away.

Here are some things that i noticed-

-Its very BIG - make sure you have a van big
-Saw the TCL model as well in store, but it appeared to be lagging for some reason(maybe something to do with refresh rate)
-Its apparently Samsung panel (thats what store rep told me)
-Compared to Sony and Samsung - its is surely lacking behind in colours and depth (but there is a new version of this, which seemed at par but was around $900)

    • What's the new model you're referring to?

      • I think its the R7

  • Kogan's is not such an old model, is a bit cheaper
    65" Smart HDR 4K LED TV (Series 8, NU8010) Fast Dispatch $649
    Was $949.99

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-65-smart-hdr-4k-led-tv-se…

Not saying its any better though

  • anyone know if physical store will match the ebay price?

edit - just read above doesnt seem like possible
