I had a look at this pre-public and it was a bit meh. The sale they had a couple of weeks was better.

Not a good time to travel

    • +2

But a good time to book travel for up to July 2021

    • What's so bad about flying in over a years time (apart from the wait)??

  • +3

Scored Perth-Bali return in september $132 (I travel with only carry on). Pretty stoked

  • +3

I booked 3 flights next year KUL to PER for $54.20ea

Not bad to keep just in case things improve.

Don't forget no refund BUT they do refund taxes for no show so at this fare my ticket shows 5RM airfare and 145rm taxes so good reason to book now and keep at maybe minimal cost.

However, with this massive downturn in air travel you wonder how budget airlines will find the funds to do proper aircraft maintenance….just saying.

    • Just wondering hiw the tax refund works - do you just no show at the airport, or do you need to cancel/inform airasia before flight departure? Ages ago booked sale flights for june, but may not be able to go.

      • I not dont it yet but apparently it only works with no show (dont issue a boarding pass)

      • Request via phone or online chat, but only if the boarding pass are not issued yet.

    • +1

Tax refund is only on Airport Tax if no boarding pass issued.

On my $124 Gold Coast - KL return fare it is 100% taxes & charges, but Airport Tax was largest cost @$80!
Tax Refund as Air Asia credit is full $80, less fee if refunded to payment method.

Given the fact that no travel insurance company will cover anything to do with coronavirus …

Please include the (at least) USD $10,000 per day intensive care bed plus doctors fees into your budget ticket calculations.

Expect a bill of at least USD $140,000 for a 14 night stay.

Please do this BEFORE you book you're bargain seats …

… it will be far too late later to join the VERY long queue of people desperately trying to crowd fund their extreme medical costs after they chose to take a basically uninsured budget holiday against all warnings.

    • some will apparently potentially cover still

      https://www.finder.com.au/coronavirus-bought-insurance-too-l…

But yeah, read your terms and conditions very carefully.

Also 10k a day? maybe in the US? But (quickly checks one of the destinations) in Malaysia, for example, it's 'only' $138ish a day for a high dependency unit. Which still would sting the pocket after 2 weeks, but is a lot less than your estimate. (source)

    • Considering it's just another flu virus, how many times have you caught the flu when traveling, then if you did how often did you end up in intensive care? Most people don't even know they've got it as they have no symptoms or just a cold. Unless your old and/or have chronic chest/lung issues, you're highly unlikely to get more then a few days of feeling yuck.

      • -5

you're highly unlikely to get more then a few days of feeling yuck.

You may kill a few people along the way but that's hardly your problem. It's not like you're stuck with the funeral costs or anything. Moron.

        • +1

It’s just a flu, so that’s the same,

3102 people in Oz died from Influenza and pneumonia back in 2018, this has killed 3
          https://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/[email protected]/Lookup/by%20Subject…

So sure, people who are susceptible will probably died as a result of catching influenza
, pr pneumonia no matter whether it’s this corona virus or some other virus., whether i or someone else passes it on.

You shouldn’t be so scared. This virus does appear to be quite virulent, it the consequences aren’t much different to the ordinary flu, expect that this one appears to most causes issues with older people only, (it’s usually kids & elderly) . 3 deaths is pretty good, more people have probably died in the same time frame having a heart attack whilst squeezing one out on the toilet.

          • @[Deactivated]: If you're not considering the implications for those who are genuinely at threat then it's because you're powerfully self absorbed. Rationalise it however you want.

Add this one to the list of infamous Ozbargain citations: "3 deaths is pretty good" - Vacuous Airhead.

It all depends if AirAsia survives the corona virus financial losses to be still running at that time

  • -1

…might be worth it just to stock up on toilet paper!

  • Coronavirus. No thanks for now.

    • +3

But this isnt for now its for next year at virtually cost price.

If coronavirus is contained you will never see these low prices again and if its not contained well you will not see this airlines ever again….dont see how they can sell fares any cheaper.

  • $141 Avalon - KL return is pretty bloody good.

  • +1

I bought flights to KL from Melbourne yesterday (through pre-sale) for Sept school hols - Mel - KL $89 and KL - Mel for $49. I then took out 'cancel for any reason' insurance through NRMA online - it is an agent for Cover More. They seem to be the only company offering this in Australia.

    • How much was the insurance?

Like what I was saying above, if you no show you get taxes back which is what you mostly paying there at that price.

      • I only got coverage for our airfares - hotels I will book with free cancellation attached. So I got $2,000 'cancel for any reason' for $130. The policy also includes all the other stuff they usually have as a comprehensive plan. The add on was only $16 more for $2,000. Would have had to get travel insurance anyway.

So if I am a no show I can claim the taxes back? How?

        • Hey mate, which NRMA plan has cancel for any reason, I can't quite see it.

Edit: Ah ok, i found it so it overs 75% of the non-refundable unused portion of all travel costs prepaid in advance.

Is this the what you meant?

          • @la838: Yes - it's an add on, you need to select the policy first then on the next page is the add on. You change the covered amount in there. Hope that helps. 75% better than nothing! I also put it to 0 excess only increases it a little bit.

            • @amberdbrickell: Yeah got it, yeah 75% is still damn good! Thanks for this, got a overseas wedding in bali in a few months so yeah this should be pretty helpful!

        • +2

See this link about refund, note there is a fee if you want cash back but no fee if you take credit note.
The cash refund fee for my trips out of KUL is 15RM ($5AUD)

          Also pasted below:

          https://support.airasia.com/s/article/If-I-do-not-wish-to-fl…

If I do not wish to fly after purchasing a flight or if I could not show up for flight, what can I refund?

          Answer
The booking of a seat is confirmed after full payment of the fare is made and after we issue you a booking number and/or the Itinerary.

However, you can get a refund on Airport Tax. In the situation where you did not board the flight, you may request for a refund on the Airport Tax paid, within six (6) months after the scheduled date of flight departure. You have the option of an AirAsia Credit Account or back to the original mode of payment.

Should you prefer the AirAsia Credit Account, the full amount of the airport taxes paid will be refunded. On the contrary, refund back to the Original Payment Mode is subject to a refund fee (per guest per sector) as stated in our Fees and Charges. Other services purchased together with the flight would not be refunded.

    • Best to buy the policies first, or within 48hrs of buying first travel expense.
Cover will only apply for travel costs that you paid for after buying this policy or if you paid for it in the 48 hours before the purchase date of this policy.

    • Travel insurance is often a major expense of a trip. The usual advice is "if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel". That hasn't been my experience in decades of travel.

I've only bought it once, on my first overseas holiday as a couple. Never found a need for it in decades of solo frequent overseas travel (up to 9 months per year for many years). I am flexible in my plans (changing locations as necessary) & book cheap flights - minimising risk & potential losses.

Travelled during the last pandemic (H1N1 swine flu) in South Korea & Japan for 3 months. Minimised risk by keeping informed, using good hygiene practise, & staying healthy. Had a great time as few were travelling.

      • I usually just go with the credit card's insurance - never had to claim anything. But, this is a bit different and I can't go outside of school holidays (being a teacher) so thought it best to get a seperate coverage this time)!

        • For most people, Insurance is about peace of mind - so your worries are lessened & can enjoy more.

Great going to find cheap flights during school holidays!! Enjoy your travels💼
I've got $124rtn flight to KL to catch up with friends, eat & rest on beaches in June.

I'm used to ending up in crises (state of emergency in Asian country where I was detained & interrogated at gun point by military, close to epicenter of earthquake killing 80k in China 2008, H1N1 in Asia 2009, Icelandic volcano eruption disruption in Europe 2010, earthquake tsunami & nuclear meltdown in Tokyo 2011, saw body floating in river after military killings in Myanmar in 2012, etc - there seems to be a pattern!).

Strangely, those were enriching experiences - after I got through them. Spent a lot of time with locals getting to know & help them deal with their fears. Dealing with dying people puts our minor fears (of a virus) in perspective!!

If there's not a major event to deal with, I now find travel a bit boring😉

Ordinary travel insurance won't cover those events.

          • @INFIDEL: We need to get a beer, swap travel stories! Which Asian country were you detained? Was Kyrgyzstan for me. :/

            • @beatthatflight: The country was not as interesting & long ago. Interrogation was in English, which was easier but still didn't make much sense.

I was seen as a political subversive (well who isn't to some regime). Held during a border crossing & threatened with being shot if I didn't own up to something I knew nothing about. Had 3 rifles point blank at my head at times. Soldiers tried to get me to escape so they could practice their shooting! They soon realised I didn't want to play.

As I was detained at the airport before entering the country, I realised they would rather deny me entry (deportation) than deal with the paperwork in that bureaucratic country. It was a stressful waiting game before they tired of me.

So threats of a virus don't worry me that much in travels.

          • @INFIDEL: Wowsers, be an interesting time sitting down with you and having a few drinks!

            • @amberdbrickell: Like when doing the odd rescue in the past or reassuring a dying person, I found I calmly dealt with the crisis I found myself in.
It pushed me to my limits, it was totally real & I felt alive. (Whereas I hate adrenaline sports others choose for a similar reason.) We all have our own abilities & interests.

Life is a lot more boring now!
Knowing why we travel or do things is handy. I'm unlikely to be found in a resort. But I still hang out a lot with locals in rural villages, experiencing their interesting lives & festivals.

          • @INFIDEL: Seems there is destruction in your wake everywhere you go. Please keep us informed of your travel plans so we can avoid being anywhere close to you…

For someone who has seen so much to not buy insurance is even more baffling. At the very least if something happens, such as a delay, lost baggage, or hijacking, you get compensated monetarily for a small outlay.

Are you a humanitarian aid worker?

            • @lostn: I sometimes volunteer in poor communities overseas. The locals have appreciated the help & I have loved the work. But in major disasters - my skills are pretty useless.

As I said - there would be little reason to claim on travel insurance (given the cost of insuring up to 9 months a year!).
I just change my plans & move on. Same as I do if the temperature drops too low - look for somewhere warmer. It has all been very interesting!

This Airline is not going to exist soon

    • I think they make their money through baggage and seat costs. When I booked yesterday the baggage and seat selection costs were more than the actual flight costs!!

      • cool, don't select a seat and take carry-on ;)

        • That's always my policy - been doing it for years👍

Buy the basic fare on sale, add extras as needed closer to flight date. Saves costs in case circumstances lead to later cancellation.
