Just happened to stumble across this, turns out to be a damn good deal IF you're already an eBay Plus member, giving a very low entry point to what is arguably the most versatile SmartHome hub. Not only are SmartThings sensors quite affordable directly from RACV (compared to other off the shelf options available in Aus), this hub is compatible with Xiaomi & Aqara smart devices, lowering the TCO bar even further.
With the $50 Gift Card promotion for signing up to eBay Plus still running, it could be all the more enticing.

  • Original price: $119, 20% off brings this down to $95.20!

  • Next best offer is $113.05 with eBay Plus, $119 without eBay Plus (Both with free Post)

$95 at JB plus all sensors are on sale also https://www.jbhifi.com.au/?q=SmartThings&hPP=36&idx=shopify_…

Boy am i glad i haven't purchased yet! Thankyou sir!

Thanks, will add my collections for hubitat :)

  • What’s the difference between this and Samsung SmartThings Wi-Fi Hub?

Is it wifi? I have HA oh Pi and ihard to write scripts as I don’t know coding.

    • +1

If you have HA maybe you can consider the conbee? Price went up since I got it for $65 but the UI is pretty simple to use. Unless you don't want to use HA no more then out of box solution would be ideal then.

      • Thanks. I have conbee ii but have not yet installed it.

I use pi2 and debating between this and a pi4 as both are at a very similar price. I prefer out of box but can Samsung trigger an exhaust fan (tp link) to run when humidity or temperature (Xiaomi zigbee sensor) in bathroom is high?

I run unifi controller and pihole on pi2 and can continue to do so.

    • The wifi hub allows you to extend the wifi network, and if you have more than 1 SmartThings wifi hub they can mesh.

But… Most people plug their hub in to their router anyway, so having the 2 sitting side by side transmitting wont really extend the range and imho could be worse with the interference. You cant turn the wifi off on the SmartThings hub so it's always transmitting.

I went for the hub without wifi, and used my own dedicated mesh router/satellite.

      • THanks for confirming. Don’t need the wifi hub as I have unifi ap.

  • What is it.

    • Home automation hub to connect all the devices together.

  • This $95 device looks like the one with one ethernet plus one USB port at the back. The one sold by RACV has two ethernet ports but no USB. The RACV one has additional Plume support that allows multiple devices to form a mesh network. Does anyone know if this $95 one can join an existing mesh network ( I already got a couple of RACV ones) ?

    • No mesh networking on this one… If you're looking for a WiFi solution, i suggest you go with a dedicated solution, not an afterthought on a cheap home automation hub. I've heard alot of bad things about connection stability with the WiFi hubs. Also as device count increases on WiFi networks, the more important it is to have a proper wireless setup and correct hardware capable of sorting a large number of devices concurrently

  • This one is the ZigBee and Zwave hub only. Not an internet/home wifi router. So it can't mesh your wifi but it can probably still act as a ZigBee and Zwave repeater. Probably best to spend the extra $60 for the wifi router version if you have the RACV kit already. If you just want home automation capabilities then you can buy this. Think of this as a hubitat or Xiaomi gateway equivalent.

It works with Google Assistant for free which is one of the reasons I also got rid of my Raspberry Pi's running Domoticz and OpenHAB.

    • Can't see any reference for zwave only zigbee

      • Oh interesting the wifi version has Zwave

      • The JB Hifi one has Zigbee and Zwave. It doesnt have the wifi mesh but many people dont want that because you cant turn it off and it's just more interference to your existing wifi and you need multiple SmartThings hubs to make the mesh anyway. You are far better off running a separate dedicated mesh router imho.

Also note Samsungs support is non existent if you have issues with your SmartThings account.

    • As confusing as Samsung have made this… The v3 hub also supports WiFi. That is, connection to your local network via wireless (as a client), and as a hub serving WiFi-based IoT devices…

It DOES NOT, try to take over your wireless network platform with it's great-on-paper controller…

The WiFi Hub is absolutely NO REPLACEMENT for anything but the most basic of WiFi setups. Mesh implementations should be avoided all-together, unless there is a technical reason why a cabled solution is not an option. Even in that scenario, i personally would not immediately turn to a mesh solution.

Think about it… (yes, this is very far-fetched an extrapolation, but it's the best example of what i've tried to point out to so many people over the last couple weeks) There's normally a $30-$40 price premium for the Wifi Hub, over the v3 hub……

      To everyone considering purchasing the SmartThings WiFi Hub w/ PLUME with the intention of making use of it's wireless infrastructure capabilities, I urge you to reconsider, and give you the following;

Purchasing the WiFi hub, with the intention of utilising it's WiFi network capabilities or even meshing multiple devices is a very crude equivalent of going around and throwing in a few $30 WiFi AP's, and likely not realising you've just set the scene for all sorts of WiFi connectivity/bandwidth/dropout issues with not only your IoT devices, but probably all your other devices utilising that network. *

  • These don't seem to have zwave support like the us version?

  • I saw the zwave logo on the back of the box at the one at JB, ethernet only version.

  • All good I found list of what can connect to it via https://www.samsung.com/au/smartthings/ see a couple z-wave products

  • Does this have Bluetooth? Can it connect to the Xiaomi temp sensor?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/488206

    • No but it works with this similar Zigbee one, and you can trigger automations based on temp, humidity or ranges. https://www.banggood.com/BlitzWolf-BW-IS4-ZigBee-LCD-Screen-…

      • Hey thanks for sharing this! I didn't know BlitzWolf made zigbee devices. My go to has been Xiaomi but the screen on the BlitzWolf is what i need! Any experience with these yourself? Xiaomi has occassional dropouts and requires fiddly re-pairing

        • I have 2 of these running for a few weeks and no dropouts so far. Got a few more coming in the post also.

  • My recommendations for the best smart home ecosystem, for the non-Apple households^ of course, are given below^^.

These are my opinions, where possible I always try to back them with facts, but I'm sharing to spread knowledge and learn from each other. Tech is my living, breathing passion. Maybe one day I'll get to know yours!
    - Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, or greater running Home Assistant
    - Home Assistant deployment by way of installation of HASS.IO (HassOS) onto a small SSD (2.5" mech also ok, but why?), not a USB or SD-Card ^^^
    - An Aeotec USB stick plugged into the Pi to provide Z-wave integration
    - Samsung SmartThings v3 Hub for ZigBee support *

    Inline notations
^ HomeKit is hands down far superior to all other tier-1 platforms without a 3rd party integration.
^^ This ecosystem is designed by me, and it meets my needs and the needs of others I've assisted and who knows how many more to follow. However… I'm very aware that none of this means that what I say is right, and what you say/suggest is wrong. See a better way to do something? Challenge my reasons for doing so. I live for the deep-dive technical discussion - The verbal whitepaper!
^^^ This is not yet a widely accepted, or even officially supported installation platform. This is largely because there is so much variation in hardware SATA>USB adapters, some working whilst others not. some having power issues when insufficient Pi PSU is used etc. The devs need to be able to blanket the entire process from glitches before it will bear their stamp of approval. Do a little light digging, and you will very quickly find just about every HA user has lost at least one SD card! Here the issue stems from not only the inherent limits on NAND flash write endurance, as well as somewhat of a design-flaw (or a couple of levels of inadequate user-education), depending which side of the fence you sit on! Stability and speed of the system is dramatically increased as well. Depending on the kinds of services you will demand from HA, you may well have to go the SSD route in order to achieve your expectations.
    * Chosen for a few reasons, in being a hub with one of the largest, if not THE, largest 3rd party support list meaning more devices will work with less hassle. But key points were - 1. SmartThings are the cheapest off-shelf sensors in Aus 2. ST supports Xiaomi & Aqara IoT devices, which are arguably the best value for money IoT devices, and have a very impressive range to boot!
