  • Just got the last 3 from Officeworks Adelaide Street, Brisbane.

They had to call the store to verify pricing and delivery charges. The person putting through the order must have have been sweating bullets.

    Nice Deal :D

  • I went to centrecom Hawthorne today @10:00am, they still had ~ 25 units on the shelf, and it hadn't looked like they had sold any yet. Also, if you want to price match with little hassle, the deal is on the back page of their catalog.

    • +1

I had them hold 2 for me. Picked them up at 5:00PM. Otherwise, they'd sold out by 1:00PM.

      Lucky!

      • Looks like my 8:30 classes were a blessing in disguise.

  • To those that have already bought these:

    How hot do these run?
Cnet seemed to think they ran quite hot.

    • I have been transferring my backup data into the drive for a few hours now, it's really not that hot.

I got a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 3.5" 2TB USB2.0 from HT.com.au VIC for $78 on clearance on Monday.

Just got 2 from officeworks Alexandria, NSW.

had to do seperate orders, as centrecom site now states limit 1/customer. took the last 2 on shelf.

    receipt: http://i53.tinypic.com/1r7ns6.jpg

    Enjoy,

    • LOL! nice work for people in Sydney, this receipt matched without postage!

    • Your receipt did the trick to convince OW.

Went to OW Carlton and they only have 1 stock left.

I shows then the receipt on my phone and they seems coulddn't believe that OQ Alexandria sold at 113.05

It took them probably about 20-30 mins to check and re-check the price. They eventually gave it to me for 113.05
They did some paper works too.. add centrecom on their list and even printed out the description of the HDD from centrecom and ataching thme as evidences. Not sure if this is their standard procedure when they do price match.

      Thanks for the receipt!!!

  • Copying from a Samsung Spinpoint 2TB to the Seagate 3TB atm. The Seagate is about 10 degrees warmer to the touch. Not too great. Both drives naked on the desk.

    • Ah cheers.

    • Looks like this is getting placed as directly infront of the fan as possible in the HP.

  • Just got pricematched by the lovely Tracey at OW in Adelaide St Brisbane. $120.65.

  • Wish OW had it here. Sigh. $131 after all the charges. Hope satchel shipping is ok for me.

    • I got away with them using satchel shipping ($9 per hard drive since its limited to 1 per customer on centrecom website) rather than the standard shipping ($18) because i went through checkout with satchel and printed that and they just believed it. They still did however to call to confirm warranty.

I bought the last 3 at auburn OW for $121.60 a pop ($119+9 -5% discount)

Curious about something though. the external comes with 3 year warranty, if the hdd was to fail could you claim it as bare drive or would you have to rebuild then send it…..

Thanks to the OP and especially stumo, who helped with all kinds of questions i had. I'm going to go open up these bad boys now!

      • i just did warrenty check online with seagate, using the serial/model of the drive not whats on the box (got details from smartctl), and the website said the drive was sold as a component and not available for RMA.

so will have to put back in casing and RMA if you want warrenty repairs. oh well, 4tb drives will be out soon, wonder what size we will use in 2 years?

  • guys, just check the hdd, it looks like the cache is 64m not 32m, awesome.

  • Anyone know how long this deal will last? I cant go to officeworks tonight, have to go tomorrow.

    • +1

Just buy it from centrecom, its only like $5 more lol, and without them you'd have no hope anyway.

      • yeah thats what i was thinking as OW are also trying to give me the run around. a few of the stores have said that oh we only have the USB 3 version OR we dont have any in stock or we dont price match with interstate companies etc etc. I found one that will price match but i wont be able to get there till tomorrow. And they said i have to price match in store but they can put stock aside for me.

  • Should I grab 2 of these and RAID them for my HP Microserver? Or just get 2 of the Hitachi green ones 2TB each?
Heat and power consumption would probably be an issue eh?

    • Idle (spun-down) power consumption of these drives is very good - less than 2.4W. So if you microserver is like mine and spends most of its time idle, the difference would be stuff all.

I must say though that the spin-up time and power draw of this seagate is relatively high compared to other drives, but once up and running, it pretty much owns for the price.

      • Any thoughts on both idle n running spin noise from these hdd? I reckon would be louder than normal greens?

Or is there no noticeable difference?

        • Heavy random seek noise is pretty loud, it sounds really grunty lol.

I can't really tell the idle spin noise above the others, so it must be generally ok. But bear in mind this is a performance drive, so its never going to sound like a green.

      • Did you actually measure the 2.4W? According to the spec sheet it is 6.4W idle and 9.2W under load. Will try to measure my ones once they are inside the microserver.
        Specs: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/desktops/barracuda…

        • It was 2.4W spun down. Those spec sheets quote the spinning idle. I didn't check that. May as well give it a go now, standby.

EDIT: OK I've measured it now at 10.7W. This is at the AC end, so 6W sounds about right at the drive.

        • Ah, ok. 2.4W spun-down is nice.
Another point. Storage review had them at 23.46W startup. So maybe around 30W peak at the power supply. With 4 Seagates plus boot drive inside the microserver it might make the 150W PSU sweat a little at power up. Good that my ancient RAID card still provides delayed startups.

    • stick with the Hitachi green ones
power seems to be double as pointed out by discombobul

  • Got the last one at officeworks dee why (Sydney) for $113.05 (he pricematched without adding postage). Thanks OP!

  • Are we able to order more than 1 from centrecom by placing multiple orders?

  • after a bit of investigation by OW in Subiaco WA, managed to get this at $113!
    heaps on the shelf left!

    thanks op!

    • Cool, do u know who you spoke to? If you can post receipt that would be even better!

      Thanks!

  • Anyone had got one from OW North Sydney?
I went cannot find 3TB one there.

  • Just got one from OW lewisham, $113 with no postal counted, at least one more left

  • USB 3 kit at Jb hifi $35

    • Hey do you have a link?

      • I think he mean the kit for 2.5" GoFlex

the 3.5" Desktop GoFlex is around $70 which is a rip off?

      • Was in store Jb hifi Carnidale Qld. I picked one up. I saw officeworks had them for 65. Was for the 3.5 drive not 2.5.

  • anyone ruuning xp system get lower capacity? how to fix it?

  • some smart person was working there last night he told me he had to put postage & handling fee
    so i had to pay $122.00 …

  • Is there much different in transfer speeds between these and the green drives for a media server to justify the extra power usage?

    • yes there is, just look up reviews of the barracuda XT compared to a WD green drive.

  • -1

I just went to Campbellfield OfficeWorks at 7am lol.

    they only had 1 left.

asked for a price match with the printed centrecom price
the checkout chick was a bit weary and went to check with manager.
    since their price was $249.

walked out with $113.05 purchase after 5% price match.

    hahahaaha take that OfficeWorks!!!

    thanks for the post OP!!

lol this post should be 3TB HDD $113 at officeworks hahahah

  • Hey guys since we know that if warranty is necessary (in the 3 years) we have to put it back into its case (if we were using it inside our pc) i took a look at this video again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmwDI6n-pv8 and reasiled theres like a foil cover at the top of the drive, wouldnt that be hard to keep looking original and untampered?

    • +1

No foil cover on either of mine.

  • anyone get this when the pick it up while its on, when you tilt it frmo vertical to 45degs, there's like a magnetic pull on it as if it's just gone heavy in your hands and wanting to either sit horizontal or vertical….
tried this with my buffalo and it didn't do this so not sure why….more plates inside a 3tb vs a 1tb?

    • A lot more. :) The 3tb has 5 platters* in it whilst the 1tb probably just has two. The RPMs would also make things more interesting.

Basically, whilst it's on and spinning, don't touch. :) Even little 2.5" portable drives feel like they want to leave your hand when you angle them.

    • It's the Coriolis effect. Best done with a bicycle wheel.

  • Thanks, just picked up two at centrecom.

    • Even though they say 1 per customer?

      • I was not awared of this restriction and he hands me two with no question asked. I will take it apart for my microserver.

  • This explains the price drop http://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2011/09/07/seagate’s-new-4tb-hard-drive-is-the-first-one-of-its-kind/
$250 for 4tb external released soon

    • Looks like it was a good time to buy those HDs from bhphoto. Extras and replacements will soon drop in price locally. :) Cackle. I see fun in the future of my microserver cluster. :)

  • Satchel delivery was ok for out of state. They shipped mine via TNT.

  • Just went to Centercom Clayton. Don't believe their website which says they have stock, they have sold out.
Ah Centrecom, you got me again!
Best to ring up before going in to any of the stores.

    • Crap! I procrastinated on buying a couple for the whole day yesterday. Serves me right.

  • Sold out :(

  • Just picked up 2 at Office Works Brisbane City. There was only one left in stock and that was on hold for someone.
    Good deal. Thanks folks.

  • Cool just got the last one at centrecom sunshine. Lucky me!

  • My centrecom order (2 of) was dispatched toady, TNT, VIC.

    • Centrecom says: Product sold out, unavailable or discontinued.

It's gone! Happy I got my 3 from officeworks.
BTW thanks stumo for your help, going to go open them up now (hopefully no foil like yours) thanks to OP too.

  • anyone shop around for a cheap usb3 dock yet?

    hows this one?
    http://www.itestate.com.au/pages/product/pdt_product_detail.…

  • Gone and not coming back - just spoke to them/

    Well and truly Ozbargained.

    • I got it from office works today at 6:30 pm!! Manager has to call his manager to approve this price match. :)

      Great work guys!

      Cheers

  • Just as well some of us bought them from Office works.

  • "(son) order will be sent on Monday 12/09/11 via TNT, Consignment Number:xxxxxxxxxxxxx"
Anyone know what the son means?

    • lol mine had that too, son.

      • Dad, are YOU space?

  • Well mine came in with foil and all. Unless warranty is done by a blind techie with brain damage I think they're gonna notice. :)

The screws are behind rubber feet which are also glued on. Also, broke some of the plastic hooks.

Here's hoping it lasts long enough to be worth the while. :)

    Fun times! :)

    • Were these from OW or from centrecom? Mine were from OW, my centrecom ones haven't arrived yet - from like 15 minutes away lol.

In saying that though, there are obviously different batches around. So you could remove all trace of the foil and still be G2G? Also the rubber feet can be stuck back on pretty easily.

      • Centrecom. They also came with international plugs.

As for the foil, I was wondering about that also. That might be a goer but I'm not sure about the broken inside tabs/hooks. Sigh. And I thought I was being careful. :)

        • Yep, just got my centrecom order, and yep, there is foil. It was also a hellar lot harder to crack open the case than on the OW ones.

So I'm glad I got the OW ones as well, since I can use them for warranty purposes if I need to.

        • My centrecom ones came like this too. :(
Was hoping to swap out drives without damaging the case too much…

Edit: I was able to get the hdd out with barely a scratch on the case, but the foil around it seems to be the real problem if you want to use your warranty.

        • Ok for future reference…

The OW ones I got that don't have foil are S/N:NA0Kxxxx

The CC ones I got that do have foil are S/N:NA0Jxxxx

        • @stumo
I can confirm that my CC ones with foil are in the same range.

  • My centrecom came apart with foil which is a sure way of ending the warranty.
Opening up the case does damage to the internal clip which will also void warranty.

This drive is faster than my samsung F3 spinpoint.
