I got 10L of hand sanitiser from Poor Tom's for $150 delivered in Sydney. Only took 2 days to come. $40 a litre is insane.

    • +5

I bought 5L of isopropyl alcohol in Jan for $23. It might still be worth keeping an eye out for that.

      • Now 1L of isopropyl alcohol cost over $35 on average. It's $150/5L is totally insane.

    • Link for order page?

    • +4

Why you did not post on here then?

      • -5

Healthcare worker only but the price for this one at $40/L is just insane.

    • You can make your own hand sanitizer with rubbing alcohol or even 100% isopropyl alcohol which you can buy at Bunnings for $9. Mix it with some gel or other hand gel.

    • Looks like it's gone up to $165, only delivers to Greater Sydney area.
      https://poortoms.com/products/poor-toms-hand-sani

    • Only available to health care workers, so not really comparable.

    • From their website:
For now, Poor Toms Hand Sani is not available for retail sale as we endeavour to supply frontline healthcare professionals with hand sanitiser who are in short supply.

I fully appreciate you are a frontline healthcare professional. And I am happy for you to get the hand sanitiser for that price. And I am not jealous, I am greatful for people like you.

Now, Not everyone is a healthcare worker and as such (and rightly so) do not have access to those deals dedicated to you. We look at other options available to general public.

Spent a little bit more and click and collect a decent whisky from Dans and a bar of soap from Coles. Hmmm, whisky.

Sorry guys but this is not a deal. If you want something to sanitise against Sars-cov-2, get a litre of isopropanol or methylated spirit for about $4 to $5 dollar and dilute to 70% with water in a $1 spray bottle. Same effectiveness for a fraction of the cost plus you can spray things which is convenient

    • Isn't it not safe to use methylated spirit on skin as it contains methanol?

      • +7

I contacted the maker of Diggers methylated spirits and asked if they add methanol. They said no.

        What's in methylated spirits?

        https://diggersaustralia.com.au/wp-content/uploads/sds/Methy…

95% ethanol and water. A bitter substance is also added to stop people drinking it. While methanol used to be added to methylated spirits, that hasn't been the case for a long time in Australia.

        • Cool, thanks for the info.

          • +3

@timhn: Yeah, the added bonus is that your hands will taste disgusting so you won't put them anywhere near your face!
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatonium

            • @Yarkin: I made some hand sanitizer using methylated spirits, applied to my hands and licked them a few seconds later once dry. I couldn't taste anything bad.

    • +3

get a litre of isopropanol or methylated spirit for about $4 to $5 dollar

please post a link so we can buy some..
zero stock in my local bunnings

      • +1

Supermarkets (WW/Coles/IGA/BigW) or paint shops also selling Digger's methylated spirit.

      • +1

I visit a bunnings every day, for work. Stock levels vary a lot. But their IS stock around. Just gotta do a milk run.

      • +1

Hey check out Aldi for metho, we managed to get one yesterday, along with disinfecting wipes and spray. Husband said there were heaps left BUT HE went around midday. Hope they rationed out the stock

        • Yes they had it as a special yesterday

  • These prices seem high and I have no control to gauge against. What was the avg price of hand sanitiser before CV19?

    • <25% of this for the same volume retail. It was always a high-priced product. Bought wholesale it was and can still be bought through supplier channels far cheaper. We're currently paying $75 for 20L containers for use in our aviation business.

    • A lot less than this.
What about the ethanol being used at 10% in fuel, why not divert that for public health?

    • I believe Chemist Warehouse still has their regular price on their website. 1L for $14.49. No stock obviously.

This is not a bargain. These prices are 3-4x RRP, this is extortionate. I won't be buying anything from Four Pillars going forward.

    • +2

It seems as though RRP of Four Pillars hand sanitiser is $40.

      • +5

Wasn’t aware they made any prior to this. However, regular hand sanitiser is about $15 a litre. I’ve bought it on sale for $8 per litre in the past.

      • +3

        Where's the bargain then?

  • +14

I don't why people are getting negged for calling them out for the price they are charging.

  • +12

Interesting product yes, but this is not a bargain by any stretch

  • -1

Don't stick your fingers in your mouth or up your nose or rub your eyes until you wash your hands…
A practice my family and I have exercised for years (minus the fingers up the nose of course!!)…
Simple!! Why it takes an outbreak like this to make people aware, I dont know!!

    • Because if there was a camera monitoring you for just a couple of hours - even you would be caught inadvertantly touching your face.

      • +1

Agreed. I've noticed if I put gloves on it becomes much more noticeable as it feels unnatural.

      • Seen the youtube video…
Touching your face is one thing, fingers in orifices is another…
Not saying it eliminates risk, but minimises it…

  • +9

    overpriced

  • +6

    Not a bargain at all.

  • +2

I don't know what's the fuss. SupplySeems to catch up now. We able get them Bulk for less than $15 a litre again now. Last few weeks was a disaster though but $40 a litre is way too overpriced.

    • Please post your links.

      • +2

They are a local supplier where we usually get our supplies for our shop. They don't have a website.

I did however try to offer it here on ozbargain 2 days ago for a very small profit (handling fee) but it got deleted by the system.

They had over 5500litre in stock last week. They supply most of it to local hospital and we were able to get our hand on some.

They said supply is no longer an issue. Issue is with people profiteering.

        • Surely they have a name and a phone number? Do they supply to people without ABN/ACN?

          • @g1: Of course they do. He asked for a link?

            • @michaelTito: 1) Can you post their name and phone number please?
              2) Do they supply to people without ABN/ACN?

              • @g1: I need to ask if I can put their name out to the public.

I doubt they will supply to new customers. I tried to order some for my family who own a separate business, but I was told they can only supply to their existing customer.

Loyalty may not be a thing to big companies like telstra etc. But to small business like us loyalty is everything.

                • @michaelTito: It would be useful.
The other side of it is that if people can't get it at those prices then this deal is actually a deal because its one of the few available stocks and it is cheaper than other places.

                  • +2

@g1: what im trying to say is that there is no shortage in supply. these people are just profiteering during tough time. these companies saw the opportunity and they took it and its costing us the consumer.

                    • @michaelTito: There is shortage of supply for general public if it's not available for general public. Health staff, people vulnerable to health issues and businesses getting access to supply does not equal supply to general public. There is a supply issue for general population.

                      • +1

@g1: What you don't seem to understand is there is no supply issue. Not even for the general. Companies are holding back stock and shop front are profiteering with what they can Get their hands on. It doesn't help that people are buying bulk though.

This happened chicken breast and mince too. Im in a similar industry so I know exactly what they are doing.

                • @michaelTito: If there is no issue then why would they not supply new customers? They have supply, why not sell it and keep getting more in? Where is all the stock at cheaper prices?

                  • @g1: Becsuse people will buy everything they could and sell it at a higher price. Again profiteering.

Or people will buy more than what they need just to "stock up"

They know and trust their existing customer not to profiteer off it. The stocks at cheaper price are with the supplier and they are selling it to their existing customer for a non inflated price.

We never "stock up" that's why our supplier trust us and provide us with the goods every week. From pasta to flour to mince. All at the normal price.

  • Not deal.

  • +1

Hand sanitizer was $78 for 5L from commercial suppliers a few weeks ago… I know that this is in stock which is the whole bird in the hand scenario but I'm sick of seeing the prices of basics going up 4-5x the usual price.

    • +2

      It's called profiteering, bloody annoying.

    • Link/contact details?. Also, available to people without ABN/ACN?

  • +4

    Seems like they're milking it.

  • +1

About a month ago, there was a batch of 1L Ego Aquium hand sanitiser being sold at Chemist Warehouse for about $14.95.

  • +4

A distiller in north NSW is/was recently doing 5Lt for $50.
Pre COVID-19, standard price for 1lt from places like Chemist Warehouse was $15

    This is purely profiteering IMHO

    • Which distillery?

        • +1

          From https://www.huskdistillers.com/sanitiser :

          "HOW TO GET SOME
Sanitiser is available for PICK UP ONLY

          General Public
200ml bottles ($10 each) are available for the general public to pick up from the drive through while stocks last.
Please respect that there is a limit of 3 / household to make it accessible to as many people as possible.

          Businesses
5L packs will be available from Thursday 2nd April for businesses to purchase and pick up at the drive through. These are $50 each. "

So they are selling $50/liter for general public. Can only buy 600ml at a time.
Same price as this deal but with this deal you can get more.

    • +7

It is not just your opinion. It's fact.

Company like this should get a fine or two from the government for ripping Australians off during a pandemic.

      • Small company, high staff costs and production costs compared to the big players. These sorts of companies only survive on novelty, overpriced products and shop fronts etc.

Food tourism is a legit business, good luck to them now tourism is dead they need all the help than can get. They are at least making something useful and employing people even if it is expensive.

Profiteering is too strong a change when their cost of production costs eat most of what they are charging. They aren't so much profiteering as inefficient.

        • These guys are owned by a multi million dollars company. How is it a small company?

  • +2

    This is an ad.
    Surely not a deal

  • Poor form 4 pillars

  • +4

As mentioned by other commenters previously you can make your own sanitiser for cheap as chips with methylated spirits (non-methanol) or rubbing alcohol (aka iso-propyl alcohol) and aloe if you are unable to get this through your local discount pharmacy for cheaper. The cost price of ethanol is minimal, and although it may be "supporting local business and jobs" when it is so blatantly price gouging and profiting off of a crisis it's hard to maintain that positive sentiment towards four pillars.

Sorry atrep nothing personal against you but this isn't really a deal (unless it's all about the fancy bottle it comes in), not to mention that lead time on the orders, damn.

  • +4

Greed is real! Overpriced and taking advantage of crisis

  • +4

    overpriced

  • +1

Are people negging this because it’s not amazon?

As OP said, cheaper than the amazon deal with over 100 votes, but every one saying it’s a rip. I don’t get it, yes I understand this is a bigger bottle etc, but in this environment I doubt the 50ml from Amazon is enough anyway.

  • This 'deal' grates.

I think the smart move here, is to do a one-for-one, donating to a medical centre etc with every purchase… Donating weekly at latest.

  • Scam. reported

    • -1

don;t know why my comment got downvoted haha. pathetic

  • +1

Anyone recommend a tonic water which goes with this?

  • +1

Everyone who is writing that this is not a deal please post links, contact details, etc for places where hand sanitiser IS AVAILABLE right now for general public (not for health care workers, not for businesses, etc), and the price. Not 'some place' but actual place..

If it's available cheaper elsewhere then help everyone out. If you don't want to buy hand sanitiser right now and want a price of a pre some event, or post some event, then that has nothing to do with current pricing and availability. There are plenty of deals from 6 months ago that no one can get anymore. Plenty of prices have changed. Help people out with posting realistic pricing and availability right now.

    • +1

      I can't agree more.

If you can order hand sanitiser without needing to be a health care professional, and they have stock, or will have stock, for cheaper, feel free to post your bargain instead of negging this deal

Yes, it's expensive, yes it's not for everyone

But don't compare it with pre-Covid prices. Don't compare it with companies that mass produce hand sanitiser which is already going to the frontline instead of being available for consumers. And don't compare it with dodgy hand sanitisers that aren't 80% ethyl alcohol

I know everyone's frustrated and angry at the situation we're all in right now, but companies like this don't appear to be ripping people off or profiteering. They're using small scale production equipment and trying to produce something it's not created to produce

    • Also you need to take in consideration that the distilleries that are producing sanitizer are not used to making it. So, with all new products, it will take time to make sure you have the right recipe, designing and marketing, buying new equipment, bottling may require a different method (being a thicker viscosity than gin), packaging costs (expensive glass bottles vs plastic) and so forth.

So yes, it may be expensive compared to Dettol who have factories making this stuff for years, but for a new 'boutique' item, I don't see it as price gouging.

We also don't know how much they're giving away (if any). We might be absorbing some of the cost when they're donating to people who need it.

I'm also under the assumption that alcohol sales are not lacking, so they may be offsetting their normal gin production.

    • just google the formula and make your own

      • Distilling alcohol is illegal without an appropriate license.
Even owning the needed equipment is illegal.

  • +7

Overpriced and profiteering. Its effectively Artisan Hand Sanitiser, feels like its a parody.

  • +1

Where's the negs for the Amazon deal? Bunch of hypocritical whingers

    • It's the typical OzBargain pile-on

  • +6

$40 a litre and they still won't include free delivery? gotta maximise that gouging, eh?

  • +3

Can someone explain why this is a bad (pretty negged) deal please? Because as far as I can see it works out to be:

    $50 a litre delivered
    $25 for 500ml
    $5 for 100ml
    $2.50 for 50ml

Compared to Dettol @ $2.69 for 50ml + delivery unless you pay for prime…

Is it because it's not Japanese Cherry Blossom or something?? :\

    • They're all price gouging, but posted at differing times. The $2.50 deal was post when most people were asleep, so didn't receive the same level of scrutiny.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/528071

      • Ok and that justifies it how?

    • +4

Can someone explain why this is a bad (pretty negged) deal please?

If you have bother to read some of the post you would understand why. It is wrong to put up the price just because it availability everywhere else is low especially in this pandemic times.

      • I remember buying a 50ml bottle from Kmart for $3 before these were all panic bought, so I might be having trouble seeing the price gouging mentioned

        • +1

          aaaaand positive vote revoked.

Read through some newer posts and clearly see the gouging going on.

    • +1

No one can explain it cos it's basic uppity high horsing by the short sighted hypocrites on here. Worst part is the same people probably preach about supporting local businesses and here's a local business doing what they can to stay afloat and providing a product that is in demand and charging what seems to be around market price for it.

WHy doesn't anyone ask Dettol how much it cost them to make a 50ml bottle? Can't do the maths to calculate unit cost?

      • -1

Worst part is the same people probably preach about supporting local businesses

Support the business by purchase jack up prices on items that suppose to be easy available from the supermarket before the pandemic. Are you that stupid.

        • You answered your own point by saying before the pandemic. If you haven't noticed, you can't get it at the supermarket anymore. If you weren't so stupid, you would notice that this seems to be market price, and you would take your holier than thou comment across to the Amazon deal and neg that as well.

    • +2

I'd actually wager the $2.69 is better value because 1) you can buy a much smaller quantity and each can be handed to a family member without decanting, 2) Its a gel, so its easier to apply on your hands, 3) Its available for delivery immediately.

I didn't actually see the Amazon deal as they often expire before you can make a purchase, I imagine thats another reason why wouldn't get much scrutiny - since they're gone before you can actually purchase.
