Fees Reduced Velocity Global Wallet @ Velocity Frequent Flyer Global Wallet Prepaid Visa

80

May be not very useful for now but will be handy later when travel ban gets lifted

Velocity Global Wallet has made some changes to their prepaid travel card, with earn rates and fees affected, which will go live 4 May 2020.

Velocity Global Wallet Visa is Velocity’s prepaid travel card that allows holders to load multiple currencies onto the card and make purchases at any worldwide location that accepts Visa. Your purchases will be transacted in the local currency subject to you having that currency loaded onto your card.

The changes include:

-Fees paid when using the Velocity Global Wallet card are reduced, including removing the 2.25% currency conversion fee (foreign exchange rates apply), supplementary card issue fee, and the $1.95 ATM transaction fee
- Earn rate from Domestic spend will reduce to 1 Velocity Point for every $4 spent on qualifying purchases, down from 1 Velocity Point for every $3
- No more ATM transaction fees when withdrawing cash in Australia and overseas.
- The Inactivity Fee will change to 0.5% of the Available Balance, with a minimum of $1 for accounts that have been inactive for 12 months.

Note that the following will NOT be changing:
- the Overseas earn rate remains the same, 2 Velocity Points for every $1 spent, on qualifying purchases
- BPAY will still be FREE when you load into a Foreign Currency Wallet and will have a fee of 0.5% of Funds Credited when you load into your Australian Wallet, with a minimum of AU$1 per Load

As a result of the changes, the overseas earn rate is now increased to 2 Velocity points per $1 AUD spent overseas and decreased to 0.33 Velocity points per $1 AUD spent in Australia.

These currencies can be converted on the go, meaning that you can lock in your exchange rates using your computer or via the app at any time. Loading funds onto the card can be done through a bank transfer or by using BPAY. The card remains separate to your bank account, however, so if you do lose your card, nobody would be able to access any of your bank information.

Brave person loading up funds for virgin to hold at the moment ;)

The money is held by Cuscal Limited, which is APRA regulated. Virgin can’t touch it.

I’m not sure they would be covered under ADI gov guarantee on deposits under $250K though as this is not a bank account?. Even if they are this card is no place to hold money which will not be used in the very immediate future. AUD exchange rates suck atm too…

      • true (was mostly posted tongue in cheek), though considering some of the 'benefit' is Virgin FF points, its likely not much of a benefit until we now the future outcome of Virgin Airlines. Not much point if they only fly Syd-Mel once a day :)

    Spelling mistake in Title?

No need, with cards like ANZ Travel Adventures, that have no O/S transaction fees, good exchange rates, and points already earned on all transactions (that can go to different FF programs).

currently 1 velocity points for every $3 spent on domestic purchase, changing from 1st may to 1 point for $4 spent.

    • Last time I remember it was 1 point per $2 another reason to stay away from Virgin

Some may find the "virtual card" feature useful.

    • per annum? per month?

good product for someone who does not hold a credit card (for whatever reason it may be), ie you load $100/week for your daily expense and earn some points… i know point earning rate is not great but better than nothing.
    Qantas has similar product too.

  • Still has greater fees and charges than alternatives for travel. I don't think this is value for money.

Really dumb product, how can you have a travel card with these types of fees?

    International ATM withdrawal fee $1.95
    Currency conversion fee 2.25%

You can get so many cards with 0% currency conversion, why not just use that - no need to load any currency, just use it wherever you like.

    • All of these type of cards are “dumb”. Several other products out there with zero fees/charges and full visa/mc exchange rate. Most people take an easy route, won’t change and are happy to pay the extra!
