please provide thousandreasons why this is good deal

        Even one would do…

        • +1

but his name is not one

        • If this is tested and cleaned as alleged then why have you not offered a corona virus free certification or at least free virus scan Software included in the sale.

    • +10

How is this a good deal?
They dont even explain how they have been refurbished????
Obviously just dusted off then wiped clean and verified twice (7 pass). Nothing more. Nothing physical in other words.
Really just a second hand drive. Thats about it.
And how old are these drives?
How many times have they been switched on and off?
How many hours of run time?
Without knowing this information you have no idea if this is a good deal or not.
All we know is they have been wiped and verified with no errors.

Obviously the PCs from which they came from were not worth selling.
So says a lot about these drives

In case anyone wants a definition of wiped clean and tested to 7 pass here it is:
The DoD 5220.22-M data sanitization method, or the DoD 3-pass method, is usually implemented in the following way:

Pass 1: Overwrite all addressable locations with binary zeroes.
Pass 2: Overwrite all addressable locations with binary ones (the compliment of the above).
Pass 3: Overwrite all addressable locations with a random bit pattern
      Verify the final overwrite pass.

Erasing an HDD using the DoD 5220.22-M data sanitization method will prevent all software-based file recovery methods, as well as hardware-based recovery methods, from recovering meaningful data from the drive.
In 2001, a DoD memo specified additional overwriting and verification methods that became accepted as part of the “standard.”
The DoD 5220.22-M ECE method is an extended (7-pass) version of the DoD 5220.22-M.
It runs the DoD 5220.22-M twice, with an extra pass (DoD 5220.22-M (C) Standard) sandwiched in between.

And I note below that CGE Solutions make the following DISCLAIMER:

These make awesome budget game drives but we suggest against using these as your primary past the warranty period as we aren't liable for any issues that may occur

        • Yep… so don't use them for anything critical, and don't use them too much.

Just a games drive you barely access.

AND you have no idea what drive you'll receive. They show a WD Blue in the picture but it could be anything.

          NEG!!!

  • Its a desktop hdd and not laptop one?

    • correct - 3.5" so desktop

    • Desktop 3.5"

      OP

  • Sata 6?

  • +35

Refurbished and HDD are not words that should go together.

    • I wondering what it actually means.
Is it refurbished like phones (i.e. actually used) or are they repaired drives
I wouldn't put valueable data on it either way.

      • +7

Firerunner does make a good point,

We're not responsible for data loss on these past the warranty period.

These make awesome budget game drives but we suggest against using these as your primary past the warranty period as we aren't liable for any issues that may occur

        OP

          • @jv: News flash, providers of new hard drives and SSDs won't be held responsible for data loss on drives they sell you either.

It's on you to back up your own data.

Do you expect someone else to wipe your arse for you as well?

          • +1

@jv: no hdd even brand new will typically be liable for data loss only the cost of the hardware.

      • +1

but you also didn't give a reason why they should not go together?

        • +1

I felt it was self explanatory. The reliability of a used/refurbished product is decreased. If people value their data then they should avoid.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: If you value your data you won't rely on brand new hard drives either? A lot of hard drives fail in their first year as well.

And there's plenty of ways to use a drive that you think may fail. A lot of people are gamers, you could put your steam library on the hard drive, if it does fail, it doesn't matter all that much you can rebuild your library easily enough and your save games won't even be affected since they save to your c drive usually or the steam cloud.

You could also buy two of these drives for $69 and set them up in raid 1 or just daily backups and you've got yourself a reliable 2TB for $30 cheaper then a brand new WD blue 2TB.

    • imagine all the goodies you can retrieve from the 'deleted' drives

    • It can if you're after some high end enterprise SAS drives. But for consumer drives, you should never had the need to buy refurb stock

  • +2

Rep what is the runtime on the drives? Power on count? Previous use?

    • Runtime varies on each drive,

They have been tested and cleaned to pass 7 standards to ensure they're stable for resale,

1-year warranty will cover any issues you encounter with the drives.

Yeah no… so unspecific, and as mentioned previously don't touch refurb hdds. Even just returning it in the post to claim warranty in the event of failure would be a PITA.

Please note, you will be responsible for all return shipping charges. We recommend using a tracking number. If the product arrives damaged CGB Solutions is not liable.

      Hi Spackbace,

This is due to the wide variety of hard drives we get.

We can't guarantee a singular brand though we can guarantee they will be from reliable brands.

      OP

    • That's a pretty terrible policy, otherwise I'd defs be thinking of picking up a few.

  • +9

I don't understand the hate this post is getting. It's $30. It's a bargain for 2TB storage regardless. Down voting because you think two words don't go together isn't a valid reason.

    • +1

Still a bargain if it fails in a months time?

      • Yes? Warranty covers a year. As stated, utilize for non-primary Data. Are all the storage devices that get posted not a bargain? Seeing as a large percent of any storage device fails within the first 3 months.

  • +5

There is no such thing as refurbishes drive. It just means that they were wiped so data can't be recovered. Stay away from 2nd hand drives if you value your data.

  • why all the neg? it's cheap enough to use as a cold spare, i mean 2TB is more than enough for most.

  • -3

I couldn't see an ABN seems a little dodge

    • +3

ABN is listed in our policies,

We have been trading for two years.

We primarily use our website to run promotions as it isn't our primary audience,

      OP

      • Your website would be a pretty niche captive audience if it was….

Although it does carry CGB branding so I couldn't see why you wouldn't tighten up a public facing contact point…

  • +19

This is why associates don't post their deals anymore. When there is actually a bargain, those with petty bias berate the post and to go as far as calling them "dodge" because they couldn't find information that is actually displayed.

    Thanks for trying OP.

    • +4

Agreed. Don't understand the negs. OP has been upfront about the condition of the drives and value of price to risk is up to buyer. 2TB new are over double this price

      • Don't agree with being upfront about the condition.. feels deliberately vague.
Paraphrased it reads like "we've landed a bulk lot of obsolete hardware and can't be bothered checking it"…

  • +2

    Thanks OP, purchased one.

  • Have these drives been "repaired" with a soldering iron, or just reformatted?

    • +4

These drives have originated from working products that have been upgraded by companies.

These then go to a data centre which wipes them to Pass 7 Standard which can be found here:

      https://www.blancco.com/blog-comprehensive-list-data-wiping-…

They're then tested to ensure they still have solid integrity to or close to the as "new" level,

They're then cleaned and shipped to us,

      OP

      • +4

In short "Used" or "Recycled", definitely not "Refurbished" :)

  • +2

    Bought one, thanks OP.

  • If you would state the exact drive or at least have a drop down box so we can select an exact drive to know wtf we will be getting i might of bought one.

    • Hi Axel,

It is a lottery in our shipments and by us not being picky with what stock we receive it makes it cheaper for you,

By buying in bulk and only ensuring we're getting authenticate branded drives from the following brands it ensures we can provide you with a cheaper price.

      I hope this makes sense,

      OP

      • Even separating between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm would be better than nothing.

Cant risk getting a 5400 rpm drive.

  • Thanks, bought one as a present for my little brother.

  • There is no way to tell if they are 5400 or 7200? want to RAID mirror them, the similar the better…

    • Hi Cholas,

As mentioned above it's a lottery for us and a lottery for you,

We try to make the playing field as even as possible by not guaranteeing anyone specific type or speed,

We can only firmly guarantee size

      OP

      • Ok, thanks OP

  • +2

I think it’s a decent deal, and they provide 1 year warranty, just don’t use it as a primary drive, or as a place to store important data (unless backed up elsewhere).

  • +3

These would be perfect to build a a cheap NAS, together with Freenas and an old PC with a sata add-on card. You could run them in RaidZ2 (RAID 6) double parity, which would help to prevent data loss.

    • Better if they were the same make and model/speed.

  • +1

About as tempting as a random person's random branded used underwear, complete with failed elastic and stains. Could be fine, but why risk your data? MAYBE as a temp drive IF your budget is tight and you're willing to put up with a headache if it fails.

    • Or maybe because people have different needs? I'm going to store TV/movies on it which is not what I would consider critical data. I can just download it again if it gets lost.

      • -4

If you mean illegally then I encourage you to buy drives that will catastrophically fail.

By the way the stuff you download won't be around forever. I only found out yesterday about Nintendo's 2018 crackdown on ROM sites from a Linus Tech Tips video where they mentioned how hard it is to get ROMs now while testing out some raspberry pi based emulator device. I've seen legally downloaded content of mine disappear off the face of the Internet too as situations change - companies go out of business or get into a dispute.

        • +1

          Ok. Thanks for your concern.

  • I just need to wait out on a nas now

  • +1

    Data is priceless

  • Paying for postage for a return both ways????
to and back would be $20.
I hope this company is not associated with auspost lol

    • Hi Steste,

Postage costs are only to us,

If the warranty claim is found to be valid aka not intentional damage or whoops I put my headphones through the washing machine and they aren't working then we happily post back the repaired or replaced for free

      OP

  • This product is EXCELLENT. One of my legs on my desk wobbled horribly but thanks to this refurbished hdd it's now as stable as anything.

  • I wouldn’t put my accidentally downloaded granny-pron on a reverb HDD.

    A fool and their money.

    Each to their own though.
    Good luck.

    • +1

      Each to their own though.

      Enjoy that Granny Porn!

Alright my friends I ordered some and will update this comment as soon as I receive them. Considering they seem to have huge amounts of upcoming stock so it might help people to decide in the future. Will run Crystaldisk mark/info and HDTune. Will return if bad sectors are found.

  • F for all of those that didn't receive it due to 'supply chain' issues
