Mailchimp currently are offering a free Domain Name up to the value of $25 USD for five years if the domain name you choose is more you just have to pay the difference.

You're required to build and host the website using their website builder product and you can use the free plan for the website builder to meet the requirements to publish the website. For every year you publish this site using them they will reimburse you the $25 USD up to 5 years.

As you're probably not going to read the full terms here are some of the things that I gather after reading them.

You need to provide them with a credit card or debit card you have 11 months to publish the website if you fail to do so it doesn't appear you'll be charged for the first year of domain name registration provided you turn off auto renewal.

Some other things I'm aware of based on what I've read elsewhere.

You do not get access to the ability to change DNS records however according to what I've read online you can have them add these records on your behalf by filing support tickets.

There is no email hosting attached to the domain name while you could use Mailchimp to set up a mailing list with this domain name ou don't get access to any email hosting. For email you could use Zoho Mail's forever free plan and have support set up the relevant DNS records.

Status of transferring the domain name currently unknown per ICANN policy the domain name has to stay where it is for at least the first 60 days and at this stage it's unclear if you can request a EPP Code for transfer without incurring any cost for the first year at least.

Mailchimp is a Tucows reseller for the domain name registration itself.

    I can confirm that you can get some DNS records changed. I don't think you're going to get it redirected to another domain name/server entirely as that's not their intention of the offer.

    Also, what does it mean to "publish a Mailchimp website"?

    It means you need to build and publish the website using their website builder product on this domain name to qualify for the discount on going.

    No they're two separate companies unrelated.

    However Mailchimp part of the Rocket Science Group which are in the process of rebranding the entire company under Mailchimp. Has another product/company called Mandrill.
