Turnigy 900mAh AAA Nimh Batteries US $0.50 (from HK), 20x for ~ AUD $50 Delivered @ HobbyKing

270

Hear me out oh land of the Eneloop!
If like me, you have found yourself with far too many AAA devices like those lights, and only packs of Eneloop AAs, this might suit you.

I noticed HobbyKing have their Turnigy's down to ~$0.85 AUD for AAAs, from their International Warehouse. Sadly, it means shipping absolutely kills that part. You can buy up to 20x at a time (site limit, they won't manually add more for me either) which for me worked out to just under $50 AUD on the CC; pay in US! (that's including a bunch of 2-cent items from their bargain bin to make use of my 500g shipping allowance :P)

Yes it feels wrong to pay such a large proportion in shipping, but took the plunge as at a final net cost of roughly $2.50 per battery, i.e. $10 for a 4x it is decently cheaper than LADDA and Eneloops which are $13-15.

Personally I have had a good run with Turnigy AAAs; ones from last stock up 2 years ago still test well on the Lii-500. YMMV ofcourse.

    • I tried to get it but no dice for now :P
I don't think that deal will always be around too. Well, if they don't care to refine it then good hehe.

I've had multiple Turnigy's fail on me after 1-2 years of light use (definitely less than 50 charges). Can't say the same about LADDAs.

I've had a similar run of bad luck with Turnigy. Most of my purchases were made in 2015 & 2016.

I find they have a much higher self discharge rate than Eneloops. In 6 months they could loose 50% charge.

I also have a batch of AA's & AAA's that have had they're capacity dramatically reduced from around 2400mAhr to 1500mAhr for AA's. These have all been used in low current devices such as keyboard, remotes, camera triggers.

Both myself and a friend who made their purchase of Turnigy in 2017 & 2018 found the AA's heat up excessively when used in a camera flash.

I own in excess of 300 eneloop cells.
I've only had 1 eneloop fail and it was a 'made in china' version.

My cells are labelled and my first batch bought in January-2011 are still going strong. I've even found an unopened back from 2011 and tested the cells capacity before initial charge and they had around 40% remaining after 8yrs in storage.

      • hmm interesting. Always good to get more feedback.

I don't have any of their AAs but I cycle through the AAAs in various motion sensor lights and they are all still going well (touchwood).

Sadly I bought only 1-pack of LADDA 4x AAA back in the $8 days as a just-incase. Joke's on me …

      • @Sebby: ^ my story is pretty much this.

      • What do you do with 300 batteries?

    • Have 40 all up of the AA and AAA in various capacities from 2 years ago and 1 year ago that I bought on separate occasions… all very good, no noticeable issues.

      Can’t complain.

    • Same. Had a few that just wouldn't recharge only after a few cycles. Then again. I'm using the ALDI smart charger which may be the culprit…

But a 4pk AAA nimh 800mAh are $7 at Coles.

Thats $35 for 20, sure they're not 900mAh, but you can buy an extra 12 AAAs for the price _ not wait for shipping

    • I've seen those but haven't seen much feedback on them. Same with the Amazon ones. I would jump with more feedback.
In particular the Coles batteries are the sort where I wouldn't trust that 800mAh anyway. Like the new Aldi batteries are a joke, doesn't matter if the number on the packet is higher.

A while ago, I did some cycle testing on the Coles batteries and found that they lasted very well - much better than the Turnigy cells.

I'd buy the Coles branded rechargeables over these unless these were a lot cheaper.

I've had to throw out a couple of Turnigy AAA batteries. I've never had any dead eneloops or LADDAs.

    • I've got some laddas in my "to be recycled' box. My 16+ 8yo varta AAA's which in charge on their turbo 15min charger are going strong. Love my Varta charger.

One of my gripes with these batteries is that they don't have "rechargeable" written on them anywhere. Lol.

    • They have a capacity on them though…. no non-rechargeable that I know of with that, but fair enough.

If a ladda breaks you just take it in to ikea and they give you a new one.

  • Aldi's high capacity is the same price or cheaper, I can't remember what I paid, but it wasn't more than $10. They are located at checkout

Aldi batts are great bang for buck and I have heaps of them but they have very poor QC. I've had a heap of failures and many that read under specification.
Turnigy is not much better either.
Ladda is still probably the best option for us locally.

I don't know about now but they were still $6 after IKEA jacked the price. But they were definitely inferior to their previous ones. High capacity they are definitely not anymore. And this was tested over 3 packs each of AA and AAA, not all from the same time/store either. Their old chrome sticker tops still test well too though.

    • Aldi's batteries are not very good. I just tested a new pack of 4 AA LSD NiMH 2100mAh. The worst had 1563mAh capacity and the best was 1650mAh.

My experience with the Turnigys has been much better, all have exceeded their rated capacity.

      • +1

That's even worse than last time I tested them - I didn't think that they could get any worse.

Definitely would be returning them as a matter of principle…

I have about a hundred of these. Age is spread over 2 to 10 years of service. Only a very few have failed. Some needed cycling after being in unused toys for years to come back a better capacity. I've been really pleased with them.

  • Oh awesome - i've hadthese for a bunch of years and still going strong :)

  • I ordered these and was advised they were dangerous goods and wouldn't ship to Australia ….

    • hmm. Mine got delivered yesterday.
