Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super OC Video Card $299.70 Delivered @ FTC Computers eBay

This was an amazing deal, I regret not buying it at that time.

      • +13

Trust me, you shouldn't regret it. I bought the 2080 super deal from them, and a mate ordered a 3600 from them. We never got them, and had to go through almost 6 weeks of garbage with them, until the finally went into receivership and we finally got our money back. Was not fun.

        • What a (profanity), when someone mentions you're dealing with an untested company people always shoot you down. OzBs tunnelvision on $$$ only lol

          • +3

@Top G: Gotta say, I've personally had the opposite experience. I saw a lot of flak being given towards them, but I stupidly went ahead with buying anyway.

    • holy crap, sad I missed that one!

      • +1

Hmmm FTC don't have a very good rep on here so I wouldn't be too sad :)

        • And since then they've gone into receivership and no longer exist.

    • +3

FTC never delivered the CPU or GPU deal I had ordered. Thank goodness for eBay plus.

    • +1

Ugly but galax has a metal plate vs the plastic one on the gigabyte. Galax also has two heat pipes vs the one. I briefly had that 1660 super and returned it, gigabytes fan quality control is not good.

      • +1

Yeah, my Galax 1070 is a good few years old at this stage and it's still the most solid and reliable card I've ever had. It looks better from the angle you actually see it.

      • +1

I bought a gigabyte 1660 super in one of the FTC deals, this is what the fans sounded like after a month at 60-70%.
Although there seems to be far fewer online complains about Galax fans, in the future I intend to avoid all GPUs without dual ball bearing fans.

And everyone stuck at home some needing upgrades…Im pulling out games I havent played in years. Got Sniper 3 all on Authentic, except the air field, cant get the end. If I cant get my frustration under control I might need a new monitor…

    • R U Trying to snipe the guy on the far hill, I had to kill of wveryone then back up near the tower where the commander is in then move to near centre of the airstrip. He really only shows as head and shoulders, and for me was very blurry

      • +1

Nah, you snipe him from the snipers nest up the hill behind that control tower. Did that on Sniper Elite setting, tried on Authentic and the Lee Enfield Camo and one of the Springfields, not a hope in hell without the little diamond aiming guide (both guns ping him just fine on Sniper Elite). I went to the ammo stash and restocked on camo ammo, still couldnt hit him on Authentic. That long shot is messed up.

I get the entire airfield cleared, tunnels done, but when I go up on the spipers nest at the opposite end of the airfield to defend the LRDG, it ends sometimes within say 20 seconds like Ive done something wrong. Im thinking Im not killing enough of the 'teffleflower' (sic) dudes, or others quick enough. Maybe ignoring the far hanger too much. But by the time I get there, Ive forgotten lol. i got to the tank and armoured car, but the sniper got me before I could heal after the others attacked me, only time I got that far on Authentic. I can complete it easy enough on Sniper Elite setting.

I was looking over some guides, got sidetracked when they said theres two snipers down that far end with the control tower. Not just two on the back wall, and one at that end. But I couldnt see him for the life of me, not from the tower, and not when I bean the one I can see. But I did find two there after you complete the mission (so 3 in that spot in total), seems like they get dropped off when the armoured car stops down that end for a few seconds. You can see the little star park.

I think I'll be waiting for prices to come back down before i look at a new video card upgrade.

    I regret not buying before….

  • +20

Yes, prices suck. But I keep seeing the same comments.

Are you super stingy or don’t have an extra $50 or $100 to get a card? If you want/need one and it’ll bring you joy upgrading and playing your games, just fork out the extra and get what you want. Stop drinking coffee for a week or something.

Having regrets about saving $100, 6 months ago is pointless.

    • +22

You know where you are yeah? People will stop at two supermarkets to save $2…

      • +15

I know and I’ve done that in the past too. But when you take a step back you realise how silly it is. Not to mention how much time you waste doing it. People need to value their time, the most valuable resource they have more.

          * thinks of the THOUSANDS of hours I spent playing CS and how much it has helped me in life *

        • +2

Agreed! There's not a whole lot of cost at browsing OzB in-between other things and hunting for a few dollars here and there, but our time otherwise is super valuable. What's worth more, saving $10 for shopping at three different supermarkets, or an additional hour with the family/friends/pets.

        • +3

This comment is basically why I throw up my hands in defeat when the $2 cashback deals immediately get hundreds of upvotes. The proportionate saving on a small item is high, but the time:savings ratio is whatever unless you already had everything ready to go with an account + something to buy + won't lose extra time window shopping, reading comments etc.

Like you might end up spending half an hour just to find the thing you want to buy, just because you got $2 off of it.

      • +1

People worry about being stiffed $2 in change on a coffee than they do about the fees on their superannuation.

        • +1

people my never see their super… :) you need to win the life lottery and make it to 65 years old first.

        • OMG super fees. Makes me sick thinking about how much in fees I've paid (and everyone else).
The big fund managers have access to SO much money. Millions. Billions. And it just keeps coming in. The lobbying power (cash donations) of super funds is so big now there won't ever be laws made that disadvantage them.

    • +2

Totally agree with what your saying. Problem is we don't just buy 1 item on ozbargain. You'll end up spending thousands extra a year if we just say it's $50 extra.

      • +2

I've been holding out on buying an Xbox one waiting for the right deal, then the One S, then the One X. Now holding out for the right deal on the Xbox Series X.

  • +2

Not a great price. I have little interest in mid-range graphics cards unless they're closer to the $300 mark. I got a 1660 for $279 about a year ago. It's not worth $100 extra just for a 10% improvement.

    • +5

Why on earth would you upgrade from a 1660 to a 1660 super?

      • +1

        subtle flex

    • +2

rule of thumb is you want at least a 30% increase for an upgrade to ever be worth it.

      • Yup, hence the reason why I still haven't upgraded my 3rd gen i5 from 2012. Core speed still hasn't increased by 30% in the last 8 years!

        • +2

Core speed still hasn't increased by 30% in the last 8 years!

B-but it has, unless you're just looking at clockspeed to determine actual performance (which is not a reliable metric between different CPU architectures).

https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/2465?vs=2520 Look at the single-threaded benchmarks on this list lol.

          • @MHLoppy: I use a different site, and I only look at Intel.

            • +1

@AussieZed: Even with Intel, 9th gen CPUs are still generally 30%+ faster in single threaded performance, and the upcoming 10th gen will get another bump over that. I don't know what site you're using, but it seems like you're not getting a true performance overview from its data, as every broad set of benchmarks disagrees with your assessment.

              • -1

@MHLoppy: dis guy mr loppy aint very smart lel. Has 0 value to actually contribute to the whole discussion.

          • @MHLoppy: @MHLoppy

He's not far off though. Plenty of the actual game FPS benchmarks are less than 30% higher than for the 3rd gen CPU in the intel benchmarks you linked.

            • +1

@ItsMeAgro: The majority of games in the link we've both looked at benefit reasonably well from the jump.

This is EVERY GAME IN THAT LINK. Two games with 1080p data don't have an improvement over 30%, out of nine results with 1080p data.

              Game Setting Result
WoT 1080p Ultra 48.7% increase of 95th percentile
FFXV 1080p Standard 26.9% increase of 95th percentile
SoW 1080p Ultra: 8.8% increase of average FPS (no 95th percentile result)
              Civ 6 1080p Ultra: 78.2% increase of 95th percentile
              CMS 2018 1080p Medium: 76.4% increase of 95th percentile
              Ashes C 1080p Standard: 44.5% increase of 95th percentile
              SB 1080p Medium DX12: 9.9% increase of 95th percentile (2.0% for Vulkan)
              GTA V 1080p High: 86.6% increase of 95th percentile
              FC5 (no 1080p or even 1440p result) -
SotTR 1080p Medium: 94.8% increase of 95th percentile
              F1 2018 1080p Medium: 48.7% increase of 95th percentile
AVG: 1080p: 47.8% (including BOTH SB results separately, excluding FC5)

I didn't cherry pick the lowest possible resolution, and I didn't pick the lowest quality setting. Additionally in the Intel link I showed an i7 3770K, not an i5 (as there are no 3rd gen i5s in that database), which means it even has the same threadcount as the 9700K and should be a relatively fair comparison all things considered.

The only thing I didn't do was use FPS instead of 9x'th percentile, as 95th percentile (or 97th, or 98th, or 99th, or whatever you prefer) is a more accurate measure of real-world performance than average FPS.*

But hey, just in case that detail is why you don't accept the answer, here's the same list, but using average FPS instead of 95th percentile:

              Game Setting Result
              WoT 1080p Ultra 16.51% increase
              FFXV 1080p Standard 15.19% increase
              SoW 1080p Ultra: 8.79% increase
              Civ 6 1080p Ultra: 75.99% increase
              CMS 2018 1080p Medium: 76.83% increase
              Ashes C 1080p Standard: 58.11% increase
              SB 1080p Medium DX12: 2.89% increase (0.97% for Vulkan)
              GTA V 1080p High: 68.03% increase
              FC5 (no 1080p or even 1440p result) -
              SotTR 1080p Medium: 50.27% increase
              F1 2018 1080p Medium: 42.18% increase
AVG: 1080p: 37.80% (including BOTH SB results separately, excluding FC5)

Average increase of more than 30%, although I will grant that by this measurement an increased minority of the games (4/9) see a 30%+ benefit.

Plenty of the actual game FPS benchmarks are less than 30% higher than for the 3rd gen CPU in the intel benchmarks you linked.

If you accept that 9xth percentile results are a more accurate way to measure real world performance than average FPS, then you're at 2/9; 4/9 if you refuse the more accurate measurement but that's still a minority. i.e. based on this data it seems pretty fair to say that "most people playing games will see a performance increase of more than 30% in this context".

Core speed still hasn't increased by 30% in the last 8 years!

By almost every measure — single threaded, multi-threaded, synthetic compute, synthetic gaming, real-world compute, real-world gaming — it has. For A FEW specific tasks it hasn't, absolutely - but for MOST tasks, and certainly the average of a broad range of tasks, it has.

I appreciate that you guys may just be trying to save some money by not upgrading (that's totally fine! I stayed on a 3rd gen i5 myself for like 6 years, and certainly I can get onboard with not wanting to rack up unnecessary e-waste), but the position of "it's not 30% faster yet" is not supported by the available data, and I feel deeply frustrated about the number of times I see advice spread around without sufficient factual basis, but especially on topics like PC hardware where it's comparatively easy to GET those facts. It happens way too much even on OzBargain, and it's robbing people of the very reason they come to this site: to get a good deal.

              * 9xth percentile vs average FPS:

              • @MHLoppy: That's a strong case, man, you've convinced me. Appreciate the effort.

      • What's the easiest way to confirm the difference between my current GPU and the upgraded one?
        Assuming just looking at benchmarks?

  • Wow lucky I got my Red Dragon 5700XT for 629 from PCCG before the price rises hit!

    • -1

For how much and when did you get it roughly?

      • $629 - PCCG was having a sale on it at the time. Its now $769 i think.

  • Yeah crazy price at this time, but maybe just buy a used 1070 Ti for about the same money?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVbaEVZSbqQ

    • +1

This is a 1660 Super, not a 1660. A used 1070 ti might make sense if it was around $250, but people want to sell them for $500+ with no warranty. Generally poeple in Australia try to sell their old generation cards for the same price/perf as the newest generation, which is really bizarre.

      • +1

        Same with used PS4's IME.

  • Is this the sweet spot in value nowadays? Currently got a 7970 with a 1440p monitor. Thinking of upgrading to a 4k monitor and possibly making use of my oculus quest. Would a 2060 super or 5700xt be better buy?

Looking to upgrade soon since I'm pretty sure my gpu is causing the crashes on my computer.

    • +1

Bad time for buying upgrades.. if u can wait you best wait :)

    • yeh would wait to see how ray tracing develops

      • I've been waiting since ray tracing first came to home PCs decades ago.

Spoiler alert: it's not going to make a huge difference in the near future. The slower framerates and/or lower resolutions to get a very similar image with subtley better reflection quality still aren't worth it in most cases.

        • well they're as better equipped as ever to tackle the problem, what will probably end up happening is they will find all these tricks to speed things up, just like the current rendering techniques. the diff in lighting may not subtle in some cases, then you can justify the framerate loss, resolution also not a biggie imo

    • Haven't looked at prices recently, but the 5700xt outperforms the 2060 super and was cheaper IIRC.
1660 is a good card if you're limited by budget, but if you can spend more, go with either 5700/2060 (or even 2070)

    • This is a good GPU for 1080P high graphic, 1440P mid graphic gaming. For 4k gaming, you'd need to look at the 5700XT or 2070 and above.

  • Thank you! I bought one as I was searching for a 1660 Super and this was the best price.

  • Go for OC!

  • Expensive

  • thanks OP
