    • -3

$6000 per kilogram is a bargain then
actually it is $5980 a kilo

but if you buy Hoyts you are supporting a 100% Australian family owned company.

      • +2

Buy 6 packs and the price will reduce to $5967/kg

Packed in Australia from Imported Product

        • Awhile since I read this, but from memory Australian grown safron is exported to the UAE / Dubai and the like as they fetch a far higher price due to the perceived quality of our produce.

          • +4

@malich: What I linked from Colesworth is imported saffron repacked locally.Australian Saffron is expensive because we grow bugger all in SE Australia, and Tasmania.

            https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-04-13/saffron-worlds-…
"Australia produces around 10 kilograms of saffron annually but also imports around 3,500 kilograms of the spice from Spain and Iran each year."

Great that we an annual production of ~10KG's (laughable), but then to somehow market it as 'superior', asking ~20+ X the global price is ridiculous.

There's nothing special or better about the Australian crop. In fact it's worse in quality given we're trying to grow it in a climate not suited to the plant, hence the very low yield, with numerous growers dropping out of the industry.

      • As much as I like supporting Australian companies.

        Hoyts: $1,380.00 per 10G

        Masterfoods: $142.00 per 10G

        https://shop.coles.com.au/a/churchill-centre/product/masterf…

I'm going to stick with masterfoods.

        • +9

Ehhhhh whether it's Iranian or Spanish or Australian who cares.
It's still a huge pain in the ass to harvest and they earned it.

But I'll make sure it's never Chinese at the least.

          • +1

@Telios: The producers aren't the ones getting the $, as these re-sellers would be paying ~$3500 or less /KG, but then asking $138000 / KG here.

        • +1

You shouldn't buy either of those. Saffron has traditionally been primarily grown in Iran & Spain (perfect climate for it).

Buying Saffron produced in either of them is perfectly fine. Australian has extremely limited production (~10KG's annually). That doesn't make it anything special, other than it being overpriced.

          https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-04-13/saffron-worlds-…
"Australia produces around 10 kilograms of saffron annually but also imports around 3,500 kilograms of the spice from Spain and Iran each year."

Both Hoyts & Masterfoods are ripping people off big time as they import the saffron (most likely from Iran or Spain), and then repackage it here asking ~20x+ the price.

          • @xuqi: Agreed, but I'm going to get ripped off regardless (unless I go meet the farmer in iran). So might as well get ripped off by masterfoods as there isn't an ALDI near me.

I'm a plain ozbargainer, can someone explain to me what's the benefit of saffron apart from colouring?

      • +5

I don't think you could consume enough saffron, at its price point, to be able to reap any of the dubious health benefits.

    • +9

Oh man, the flavour and aroma is intoxicating! It is responsible, in part, for imparting that exotic aroma and flavour to a Biriyani. Its used in a lot of Middle eastern, Indian, Pakistani, Spanish dishes , both savoury and sweet. You can even get Turkish ice cream with Saffron flavour.

    • Saffron in a risotto is incredible. Aside from the colour, the aroma and taste is amazing.

    • +1

if you don't notice a different flavor and aroma in the food then you are 1) not using enough or 2) using low quality saffron (like Aldi ones)- most possibly due to both.

I've tried both Aldi and genuine Iranian saffron and the difference is astounding.

      • how much is enough?

      • You are correct, if you can get the pure grade from Iran or Spain it is truly chalk and cheese difference.

    • Colouring is not the most important part, when coocking very small portion of it changes the flavour of the food when used as powder (more effiecient)
You can also drop one of those tiny leaves in a cup of tea it gives it a very good flavour, plus in general it's very calming and good for health.

  • Can we grow saffron at our backyards?

    • Yeah it's a bulb that turns into a flower. You then pluck out the red saffron and dry it naturally. It's actually time to grow it now in autumn.

You don't get much though. Google says you get 1kg for around 130 plants.

      • So does that mean, a bulb only give you 3 saffron stems? Can you regrow with a bulb?

      • +4

Think you might have misread that 15-20 flowers yield 100mg i.e.150-200 flowers = 1g which equals 150,000-200,000 flowers for 1kg.

Its all picked by hand hence the eye watering price. Source - https://www.agrifutures.com.au/farm-diversity/saffron/

    • +1

Dry arid climate is best for growth (hence why most production is in Iran & Spain). Welcome to try though, keep in-mind you get 3 stems / flower.

"150,000–250,000 flowers are required to produce one kilogram of saffron."

  • I saw video on how to cook Hyderabad biryani rice and they use liquid saffron. Do we simmer saffron in hot water or just pour hot over and let it brew? I love biryani so wanted to learn to cook them. Thank you.

    Psychic pokemon like it

You need to have tiny grinders to grind Saffron into a powder form. You then need to brew it for few minutes which then you get liquid form. Saffron is natural Anti-Depressant and usages are:
    - Mix it with Tea or drink it as a Tea.
    - Add it to you rice or food for Colour AND Aroma
    - Add bit of rosewater and water and keep it in Fridge for iced saffron tea

    • Thanks, Have message you.

  • These guys are great all day everyday for quality Saffron at close to the Aldi price - https://saffronstore.com/

  • Bargain basement prices.

    https://saffronstore.com/shop/5kg-saffron/

    Haha
But in all seriousness is around $10 per gram around the going rate for quality saffron? I usually just buy mine at supermarket.
I make a big batch of chicken byriani most weeks using a whole Aldi chicken as it's great value and bloody delicious.

    • +1

$4000 / Kg for larger quantities is fine.

To get it cheaper you'll need to buy directly from producers in Iran.

    • If we manage to team up as 10000 people to share this we save 33% compared to this Aldi deal and probably get better quality too :-)

  • +2

Just as a PSA for ozbargainers, if you ever go to a middle eastern supermarket you should be able to buy high quality Iranian saffron for very cheap. At my local it is $7 for a gram. Cheaper for higher quantities.

  • I suggest always buying threads & grinding down yourself. At least you can see what you've bought. Much easier to adulterate the powered product.

  • so saffron is more exclusive than truffle
