  • Thanks, any good prices on control pads?

    • I just saw them… $40 odd… yeah nah.

      • +1

Is that a yeah or a nah?

        • If you wanna pay for them it's a yeah…

      • They dont have mechanical switches like the original Neo Geo game pads. Membrane only.

metal jesus rocks did a good review. Its honestly not bad for this price, but…

  • Great thanks!

I love Neogeo games but this one always seemed pointless. The controller isn't great, it's only portable with an extra battery pack and the games are limited.

You can emulate this on a toaster and the games have been rereleased a thousand times on newer consoles.

    • +1

I wish it took the style of the Nintendo versions rather then be a unit in itself.

      • You can plug it into a tv via mini hdmi. Works great!

    • +5

A MiSTer + arcade stick + CRT = one of the best Neo Geo experiences you can get IMO, outside of having the real thing.

      • +1

        Expensive too

      • +1

Where are you going to find a high quality CRT these days? They're ancient.

        • which arcade stick would work on this?

        • Gumtree, FB marketplace, reaching out to studios, side of the road, etc

I've found 7 CRTs (and 3 of them are Sony BVMs, broadcast tier quality), all for free.

          • @nmur: I've been looking for a Sony PVM for ages, hook me up.

      • +3

great on an LCD over HDMI too… MiSTer is great

      • +1

How have I never heard of MiSTer before? It sounds like a fun project to put one together. Although NeoGeo probably runs OK on a Raspberry Pi…

        https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_MiSTer/wiki

        • +3

It's definitely not plug and play, requires some searching for necessary parts and some potential tinkering to set up, but once you're up and running it's excellent.

        • +4

Can attest that a MiSTer is awesome. I've sold all my hardware consoles (NES, SNES, MD, GBA) and am just running this on its own. I used to run a Framemeister and had RGB mods and cables done - this thing runs rings around it.

I also produce the 128MB SDRAM boards and the USB Hub daughter boards for the MiSTer, so feel free to drop me a pm if you feel like chatting about MiSTer or if you're after either of the two boards; I'll do an OzBargain special price.

But yeah, get onto MiSTer if you haven't yet!

          • @Michalek: i thought a Framemeister was a MiSTer.

do you have a link to one?

            • +5

@godofpizza: A link to Framemeister or the MiSTer?

MiSTer is just the name of the project itself, it's not hardware. You need a DE-10-Nano board which is produced by Terasic. That board then requires a microsd card and you load MiSTer and the associated files onto it. With that done, you can use a USB OTG cable to plug devices in and play some cores (you can think of a core as a system like NES, SNES etc.)

Some games on some cores requires additional RAM, which you can purchase in 32/64/128MB variants. 128MB is required to play every game in the NeoGeo library. A USB Hub Daughter board can be purchased and attached to the DE-10-Nano - you get 7 USB Type A ports to plug in peripherals.

I'm using an 8Bitdo USB BT receiver and my Switch Pro controller. I was a latency fanatic and the Framemeister had a little too much lag for me. MiSTer and my Switch Pro controller connected to the TV via HDMI with the TV in game mode is perfect; I experience no noticeable lag.

In regards to a Framemeister, I bought mine off Ebay but there are sites you can find via Google that sell them.

If anyone has any questions about MiSTer just shoot me a pm, happy to help.

              • @Michalek: Whats the best place (cheapest) to buy the DE-10-NAN0 and associated boards? Keen to get started with the MiSTer!

              • @Michalek: How much did you end up spending on your MISTer? I've been keen to get into it at some point due to there not being any real affordable options for NES in RGB or HDMI.

                • +1

@aacob2: If I remember correctly, the DE10-Nano was around $220 AUD. I then spent $150 AUD on a 128MB SDRAM board and $120 AUD on a USB Hub before I realised I could solder them myself.

I'm currently waiting on parts so I can put together the IO board. (This board has a fan on it and some extra switches for easier management of the device).

I had a Switch Pro controller already and spent $25 on an 8Bitdo adapter. I use a 64GB microsd card I had lying around.

I sell the SDRAM and USB hubs for a fair bit less than what I paid for mine, so I think anywhere between $400-500 would be what you would expect to pay for the DE10-Nano, 128MB SDRAM and USB Hub board. Closer to $500 if you get an IO board but that's much more optional imo than the SDRAM and USB Hub.

Put it this way, I spent $600 on a framemeister and all the cables for all my systems. I'm far happier with the MiSTer as it's cheap, relatively speaking, once you consider the consoles you have to buy, not to mention the games.

                  • @Michalek: Thanks! I had a rough idea on the price but nice to hear from someone in Aus on how much it cost them. Will definetly consider one of these now that I have an idea on pricing.

            • @godofpizza: Framemeister is an upscaler - takes a multitude of analogue and digital inputs and outputs HDMI

          • @Michalek: How does this compare to a raspberry pi running retropie?

            • +4

@ausbob71: Totally different experience. Retropie is entirely software emulation; MiSTer is more akin to hardware emulation. Some of the cores written for MiSTer are completely cycle accurate, meaning that there is absolutely zero distinction between running any game on the MiSTer compared with the original system; the implementation on MiSTer is identical.

From that perspective alone with MiSTer you're running a much more faithful recreation of the hardware than any software emulation (Retropie) will ever come close to.

        • +1

Holy hell how did I miss this? Blows the Super NT out of the water.

      • +3

CRT doesn't just make old game look better, it makes all games look better. It's a far better technology than any flat panel. Lower resolutions look much better and AA works much better.

It's kinda crazy to me that production hasn't started again.

        • You'll have to pry my scanlines from my cold dead hands, but LCD monitors are cheaper, much thinner, lighter, less prone to failures, and don't require deflection adjustments, etc. I can see why companies have moved on.

        • Errrr no. It's because games designers at the time designed games for screens based on CRT tech. Take for example Amiga copper effects and parallax scrolling, excellent examples is Shadow of the Beast. Looks awesome on CRT, and pretty average on LCD. Games designers today design with the common tech in use, just like game designers did back then, eg: very careful pallete selection, dithering effects, anti aliasing, all designed with CRT in mind. You go back to something like the Commodore 64 it not by chances the colours they used for the startup commodore basic screen, it was the best pallete that would work with an RF modulated CRT (the users TV), wasn't till much latter on that dedicated analogue RGB monitors where economical for home users.

Ben Heck converted one of these into a proper hand-held. 2 part video

  • These things look terrible on TV. Just check out the metaljesus review. It's good for $50 though.

    • +1

I liked his videos until I saw a video of an Aussie Collector that he apparently has it in for…. and yeah he comes across as not such a nice person.

      • +2

What do you mean? What did he supposedly do?

        • Gonna be hard to find. It was an Australian collector with a huge collection doing a tour. It was a good year ago I reckon I saw it so probably gonna be impossible to find.

From memory he made it sound that he was really petty and dismissive. Honestly can't recall exactly.

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: I have watched all his videos over the past several years and not ever heard of this video?

Would love to see it if it exists.

I enjoy his content but don't agree with everything he endorses or does.

            • @J6: He's not the one that did it, it was other collector(s).

Honestly I'd have no hope of finding it, just a Youtube algorithm showing me a random video once upon a time.

            • @J6: Found the guy he has it in for….
              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox7En_cYAa8

No idea if it's mentioned in this particular video, but it was somewhere.

          • @scuderiarmani: Joel aka The Last Gamer.

      • Curious to see this. Link?

      • MJR videos. I stopped watching these after i reading some of his rules on his FB group.

        • What's an example of a rule you don't agree with?

          • @J6: RULE 10

            • @godofpizza: Metal Jesus doesn't endorse any media or message posted on this server? Lmao

  • Cheers

    Retro is so last year.

    • -2

You mean so 30 years ago.

      • Didn’t quite go…..but yes.

    • so you're saying it's retro…

How come there's no free shipping for Prime members when it's meant to be

*For Prime eligible items shipped and sold by Amazon US that collectively exceed $49 on amazon.com.au.

  • Thanks OP for posting this - IMO this is a good find. as you say $149 retail .. this is 57% off retail after shipping.

I am a bit of a collector and gamer of all things retro I did buy this paying retail from JB last year… surprised to see it going for so such a cheap price.

  • +1

I built a full cab using a thrown out CPU and monitor and bought 2 player joysticks and buttons for around $40 from eBay and $20 worth of MDF from gumtree.. my kids love it

  • For some reason shipping is $17 for me

    • Are you using anything other than standard shipping. Was hoping it would be free with prime so signed up for trial but alas not included.

      • Just standard

  • I have a strong urge to buy an arcade machine after watching Ozark Season 3, this might do!

  • gtr80y - did you order 2 maybe? caused increase in postage price?

    • +1

      One was $17.Two was $24.
I've got prime but this isn't eligible.

  • my 2 favourite arcade games metal slug and samurai shodown,

  • Damn it, just bought one against my better judgement. I prefer the red colour combo of Japanese version myself but still, $50 is a great price for what you're getting. I will likely let the kids have at it before putting it up on the shelf as a decorative retro gaming trinket

  • Can we play the kind of fighters in this ?

    • +1

assuming you mean King of Fighters :)

      according to description, it includes:

THE KING OF FIGHTERS '95, THE KING OF FIGHTERS '97, THE KING OF FIGHTERS '98, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2000, THE KING OF FIGHTERS 2002

  • +2

I have one already. Screen is magnificent but the joystick lacks the mini switches of the original Neo Geo controller. The control pads also lack it so there's no feedback. It also only outputs to the TV at 480p so looks pretty bad.

Great to have in the man cave as a collectors item, otherwise the Neo Geo Arcade Stick is a lot better, if significantly more expensive.

  • +1

Thanks OP, might need to get a Mayflash adapter to use my Xbox one controller for this babe.

  • +2

Dropped by .52 cents overnight. Suspect due to currency fluctuation. Glad i waited..lol. JK

    • well done you got the lowest price :) LOL

looks like this has now been OZBARGAINED……. NO STOCK LEFT…..time to mark as expired/out of stock

      • Yeah just noticed. And i ordered literally 45 mins ago. Fingers crossed it ships. Interesting to see how long these take to arrive given current shipping scenarios. Still waiting on some 4k discs from Deep Discount from a month ago.

  • After reading all the reviews I decided to have one, then it's gone. Dollars saved! LOL.

  • Anyone shipped yet?

    • Ordered mine on Friday 29/4. Dispatched on Monday 1/5 and expected delivery date is 28/5

      • Mines preparing for shipment now. Was concerned that i may have missed out as i ordered very close to when they had gone out of stock.

      • Mine arrived today. just powered it up in front of workmates and they all want one now.

$149 at JB hi-fi for them! Hehe

  • Mines arriving today apparantly.

  • It looks like this is back in stock again at Amazon us

  • Got mine 2 days ago. Awesome little unit. Screen is quite crisp. Neat little unit for $60(ordered 2, one for me and one for my brother so worked out a little cheaper).

  • Got mine. Instant love affair hampered by no persistent memory card storage. Bloody saves to ram so power off and it’s all gone. You have to manually create save states via the system menu.
