Acer Liquid Metal - $128 @ JB Hi-Fi

970

Seems to be a pretty good deal for an android phone with:

  • 3.6" screen, 800x480
  • 800 MHz processor with the Adreno 205 GPU
  • 5MP camera
  • GPS, wifi etc.
  • Android 2.2

EDIT: It's locked to telstra. Should have put that info in before!

2.2 is old of course, but I'm guessing if this gets out enough there'll be some developers porting over CM7? :)

Mod: Unexpired deal until Oct 19

      • Seems fine. I have installed the factory 2.3.4, along with the SIP zip (gives you the SIP config + Google Phone Dialer) and SuperUser for root.

        Everything works great.

I now have a Telstra wireless BB sim in this thing and I'm using a VOIP account from Pennytel to make calls.

        • Which sip.zip is that mate - have you got a link? I've put the T&L custom ROM on, which is also 2.3.4, and there doesn't seem to be any SIP client there even after installing the full app pack.

Another successful unlock/ROM upgrade here, using the above guide. Now working on Virgin. Dead easy, the only hard bit was choosing what custom ROM to install (after the initial leaked vanilla Acer Gingerbread), as there are 4-5 options and they all do things a little differently. Ended up going for the T&L Metal ROM that the guide points to.

As for the phone, it's great. I hadn't even heard of it until this bargain (massive thanks to the poster!) and I'm over the moon with it. Aesthetically nice, much faster than I was expecting for an 800Mhz CPU, battery indicator still showing full after an afternoon of playing with it (hope that's not a calibration issue). And I actually like the gently convex screen - it seems to make my corner-of-thumb typing more accurate.

Only things I don't like are the location/flushness of the on/off switch, and the ridiculous key combination needed to boot it in recovery mode. More internal flash would be nice, but there's always link2sd.

Also worth noting is that Expansys in the UK are selling this with Gingerbread in 3 weeks, so it's assumed that Acer will release the GB kernel sources soon. When that happens there'll be proper custom ROMs (probably including CM7), with overclocking and the like - people have had the CPU running at double its stock 800Mhz on Froyo. While overclocking in general use really isn't necessary on this snappy little phone, it'll be nice to have turbo profile for browser and map rendering. Just for those of us who are pathologically impatient. ;-)

All in all, this has to be the best phone/tablet bargain ever, even more so than the MyTab.

    • hows the camera on the liquid metal now?

      • Haven't tried it yet mate, but I will and will follow up here.

To think I'd have spent double the money on a Huawei X5 if they'd had any in stock at either of the Dick Smiths I went to this week. Just got a better phone for less than half the money. Huge thank you to Ozbargain and (and I don't believe I'm saying this) Telstra.

        • This phone has 850/1900/2100 - so it has the benefit of NextG (850) and it supports Optus and Voda SIMs in most city areas (2100).

      • +1

The camera is dissapointing. While it has a 5mpx sensor with autofocus, the camera lens is poorly built and has trouble adjusting focal length at medium to long distances.

Macro shots are OK. But take any picture at more than a few feet and you'll start getting out of focus.

      • +1

It is definitely not as good as Nokia N8 :-), but judging from samples here http://www.macnn.com/reviews/acer-liquid-metal.html the camera is quite OK for this price.

Unzip, then make a new folder on your SD card with the name "acer_ug".
Place the ROM into this folder.
Otherwise, the phone will not detect the image.

    • Scrimshaw, thank you very much for the tips.

Sorry but being not very tech savvy, am I correct to say to unlock and change to the new customised gingerbread ROM is just:
      1. download the file as above
      2. use current sd card in the phone and make a new folder with the name "acer_ug" and placed the new ROM in there (just anywhere or it needs to be in a particular subdirectory) and presto it will update automatically??
Have I missed anything, or can you please lay out after point 2 for us the less tech savvy ones. Appreciate your technical expertise on the matter.Thank you!

    • Do you need to use the Acer Download Tool to install 2.3.5?

      • No you don't. Just use Vache's Recovery 2.2 tool.
        http://android.modaco.com/topic/342583-recovery-amonra-recov…

It does the same job, and is easier to use.

        • And the Vache's Recovery 2.2 Tool/ Acer Download Tool does what again? Sorry for my dumb questions.

        • I think Vache's Recovery tool is for installing custom ROM in zip format. I don't think you can use it to install ROM in bin format.

      • Same question here.

I just downloaded the rom from http://www.mediafire.com/?qmf4p4dnxdrwopw
Then unzipped it and made a new folder on the SD card with the name "acer_ug".
Placed the ROM into this folder and booted to SD Download Mode with Camera / Vol- / Power which is when it did some funky business and then switched off. I then switched on and it boots up fine without the Helstra crap. That's all I've done.

Obviously I've flashed differently to the modaco way as in jackofspade's link and am wondering if there's something else I need to do.

    • hey scrimshaw is 2.3.5 official? i used the one from http://android.modaco.com/topic/346043-how-to-install-a-cust…

      • Yes, 2.3.5 is official. It is not modded (i.e. Vanilla).

        See http://i.imgur.com/Kvd9C.png

        • sweeet! do you know if its more stable than 2.3.4?

        • Not sure. Never tried 2.3.4. I went straight from Froyo to Gingerbread.

        • ahhh cool imma put 2.3.5 on now. so do i delete old acer_ug folder. then paste the 2.3.5 one in then reboot?? thanks

        • Would you know if upgrading to 2.3 also voids the warranty, or just rooting it?

Thanks for the clarification. So I presume you mean physical/hardware damage only, not of the software kind?

        • +1

In Australia we have warranty by law. Nothing voids the warranty unless it actually causes damage.
This "voiding the warranty" business applies to Americans.

    • I've installed 2.3.4 successfully but I can't install 2.3.5 for some reason it can't find the image file.

      • There are more customized Roms if you stay with 2.3.4. For example Gingerounay, it's much faster than the factory ROM and has less bloatware.

        • Me not being mega tech savvy and all, do you recommend 2.3.4, or 2.3.5 like I've done as in your link provided?

edit: i get it now. I'll stick with .5 and wait for customised roms to be developed.

  • Looks like a nice deal. Will see if I can pick one up tomorrow. My iPhone-3GS is driving me nuts as it just random reboots during calls so this might take it's place. After a little upgrade of course ;)

If anyone is interested, MugenPower is selling a 1800maH battery for $35 AUD shipped. Just ordered mine and will be doing a review of it when it arrives.

They also have an extended battery (3600maH) which makes the phone about twice as thick.

  • +1

Managed to pick one up today - tried to haggle the price but they wouldn't budge hehe - Ozbargainers have to try no matter what!

    A quick Q:

Phone is on first charge now. Do I have to active it or anything? Or use the Tel$tra sim or can I just upgrade it right away and use whatever sim I want it it?

    Thanks.

    • +2

I upgraded it straight out of the box, and never put the telstra sim that came with it in the phone at all.
When i put my vodafone sim in, it worked.
So I'd say just upgrade, then use any sim you want

  • That place I linked to cant unlock the phone so don't bother with them.

    • +1

Well it looks like a firmware upgrade will save you the cost anyway!

      • +1

Meaning that the 2.3.5 Gingerbread ROM once installed will unlock the Metal?

        • Yes.. I just did it :)

  • The one linked to earlier in the post will do it. Go back and read the comments - don't even need to root. The flash is 'carrier agnostic' ;)

  • +2

THIS PHONE IS DOPE FOR $128!!!!!!!

and yes upgrading to gingerbread unlocks it!

    • so all this time JB staff were smoking this.

New JB slogan should be Smoking Prices

  • The 2.3.5 version is better than the 2.3.4. I originally upgraded to version 2.3.4 and then having an issue with the camera (picture not save to the memory card). Upgraded to version 2.3.5 and the camera problem is now gone :).

I have to say, for just $128… this phone is a great bargain

  • Anyone knows how to root the phone on 2.3.5? Super One Click does not seem to work. I haven't tried Z4Root - Anti-virus software keeps blocking it. Need it for Link2SD to work.

The custom firmware for 2.3.4 is rooted and has Link2SD installed, it also stripped down the apps (the Acer social app - forgot the name is removed). It even removed Google Map. I don't like the black theme though.

Need to find a way to root 2.3.5… I know 120M internal phone memory is not enough for me - I want to install a few apps. Link2SD is needed, thus the phone need to be rooted.

      • Mate… question is for 2.3.5.

        • it also works for 2.3.5…i did it last night

      • You will need Superuser + Recovery tool 2.2 to root it.

I stuffed mine up though :S Wasn't able to root my phone despite following instructions. Perhaps you'll have better luck. I'm running 2.3.5 if that helps anyone.

        • Thanks for the info. I like 2.3.5… but Link2SD is just too important to me… okay 2.3.4 for now I guess. Why didn't Acer just put more ROM on the phone?!?!? Even with Link2SD, I still need to reboot the phone regularly to get the correct space reported - luckily the custom firmware has a shortcut to reboot and the phone boots up fast.

        • +2

I finally rooted it… The author updated Superuser today. Download the latest SU (Sept 26) and it will root your device, no issues.

        • Thanks mate.. works now.

      • what custom rom did you use on 2.3.5? Could you get link2sd working on it?

        • 2.3.5 ROM is the leaked one, not a custom ROM. Yes, Link2SD works with 2.3.5 now.

Link2SD requires Root access, as well as multiple partitions on the micro-SD card.

Get the phone rooted… and re-partition your micro-SD card (to have 2 partitions - second one is the one Link2SD will use).

I did try the custom ROM (2.3.4)… now I feel like removing some Acer bloatware in 2.3.5.

      ???

  • I installed the official 2.3.5 as above.so easy.
Is there any way to get sip/voip on that ROM?

    • +1

I wanna get Pennytel working on it!

    • I thought sip was standard on 2.3 gingerbead but the option is not listed in call settings. I just use the mynetfone app. You can use a generic one like the csipsimple app.

      • Thanks dude but wont work unfortunately. Keeps crashing and when it works it registers but wont work.

        • +1

If you look on Modaco you will see a zip package for sip. I think it was in one of the 2.3.4 threads but it should work on the 2.3.5 version too.

Just download the package AOSP_Sip_3.026.01_upgrade.zip and flash it using the recovery. You may need to boot up the phone and restart it once to get all the icons back

I have mine with native sip running and talking to pennytel just fine

        • but it should work on the 2.3.5 version too.

My phone is now stuck on "android" and will not boot. Time to pull the battery, and try to recover.
          Anybody got SIP with 2.3.5 ? ( Acer_LiquidMT_4.000.01_AAP-GEN2_03.28.01 )

        • Hey BlinkyBill, I haven't rooted by 2.3.5. Will AOSP_Sip_3.026.01_upgrade.zip still work on that? Obviously CSipSimple is a major fail for me.

  • I downloaded the zip file with the leaked Gingerbread ROM (from the Mediafire file sharing site), and extracted the .bin file. I created a folder "acer_ug" at root level on my SD card (the one that came with the phone). I dragged the bin file to that folder. Whenever I try to go into SD mass storage mode (with the phone off), I get not three beeps, but rather one long beep and message:

FAILED, MORE_THAN_1_BIN_FILE please keep 1 bin file

I have downloaded the zip file several times, in case something went wrong with the download. I don't get it, I have the same hardware, same ROM, same everything as others here who have installed it successfully. What am I doing wrong? There is but one bin file on the SD card.

    • +1

Which file did you download? SDs_Acer_LiquidMT_3.027.01_EMEA-GEN1_03.27.01.zip right?

All you need to do is to extract the zip file, preseving the file structure onto your SD. If in doubt, clear the acer_ug directory first.

You should end up with 1 bin file in \acer_ug and another bin file in \acer_ug\acer_xx.

Also, you MUST be able to feel 3 vibrates. Otherwise, you pressed the wrong key combination. Remember also that the camera button has 2 levels - slight press is called Focus, hard press all the way is called Camera.

I normally start with the 2.3.4 zip file (which is SD ready)… Then do the upgrade to 2.3.5 later.

      • Shouldn't we be using the GEN2 Image?

"I believe there are two different versions of the phone. An EMEA one and an ASIA/US one. The differences are in the frequencies the phone operates on (EMEA: 3G:900/2100 ASIA: 3G:850/2100). Thus I think this is reflected in the firmware GEN1 is the EMEA one while GEN2 is the ASIA/US?"

        • You do upgrade to 2.3.5, but I think you need to start with the the 2.3.4 one. I don't think the firmware has anything to do with the frequency… the freqency thing is hardware.

I never quite figure out how to do 2.3.5 right away. I normally does the 2.3.4 then upgrade to 2.3.5. How do you do 2.3.5 right away?

      • OK, works with the file you mentioned. The other file (for 2.3.5), mentioned in scrimshaw's 19.38pm post, only has one bin file in it, and no acer_ug or acer_xx. Thanks so much.

        • Remember to upgrade to 2.3.5. The way I did it is not the smartest way. I actually used Acer Download Tool.

There is probably a way to install 2.3.5 straight (maybe replace one of the bin files with the one that's 2.3.5)?

Anyway, one good thing about using Acer Download Tool is that it forces you to install the driver for the phone (though I guess to do the recovery console bit, you will need to do the same). Once you have the driver installed, adb command will work and it does come in very handy later on.

        • yeah myself could not figure how to put 2.3.5 first so i put on 2.3.4 then had alot of trouble putting on 2.3.5 because i didnt understand how to use the acer download tool. :s does removing acer bloatware make it alot faster?

    Some quick notes
    1. Generally, the 2.3.4 SD zip pack (the one with 2 bin files) is easier to install first.
    2. You should upgrade to 2.3.5 - because 2.3.4 has a camera bug.
    3. If you plan to use Link2SD, you need to partition your microSD (need 2 partitions). Use "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition" and make sure you setup both as Primary partitions.
    4. To remove some Acer bloatware, you need root access.
    5. To use Link2SD, you need root access.
    6. If you can root your phone, install "Quick Boot" from the market. Then you can get shortcut to Reboot your phone and Go into Recovery mode (the key combo to go into recovery mode is not that easy to press properly).
    7. You can sort of customise your lock screen. Press and Hold on the lock screen and follow the instructions.

    • +9

Rooting your phone and partitioning your SD card (my own method, there are probably other ways out there).

      To root your device:

      1. Ensure that your phone has Vashe's Recovery MT 2.2 installed.. If not, follow the instructions to install it.

      2. Download the SuperUserzip file. md5: 6d490575092a1c5d91af56b94c2328f4

      3. Copy the zip file to SD card. Don't unzip it!

      4. Reboot your phone in recovery mode by pressing the power, volume up and down buttons, and camera focus button simultaneously. When the phone vibrates, release the power button and keep others pressed until you get to the Recovery screen.

      5. Use your Volume keys to navigate the menu (touchscreen is disabled). Use your Camera key to CHOOSE items. Power Button usually goes back a screen and is often used to confirm items as well, so read the screen carefully.

Now select OTHER. Then select "TOGGLE SIGNATURE VERIFY" to disable it.

Return to the main menu and this time select FLASH SUPERUSER ZIP file

      1. When finished, reboot your phone. Now go into the market and grab the latest SuperUser (updated Sept 26) and Busybox installer.

How to Partition your SD Card (the easy way!)

      1. Make sure your SD card is backed up to your computer. What we're going to do now is to format your SD card using Vashe's Recovery MT 2.2 tool.

      2. After performing your backup, quick format the SD card in Windows. Then stick it back inside your phone.

      3. Turn on phone and boot directly into Recovery Mode (PWR, VOL, Cam Focus)

      4. Choose PARTITION SD CARD, then pick the first option from the list to start partitioning.

      5. It will ask you to specify the Swap file size and the size of your EXT2 partition. For the swap file size, choose 32 megabytes and for the EXT2 parition, you'll want at least 512 megabytes. Could go lower or higher if you want.

      6. Confirm the partition and let it do it's job. You're welcome to upgrade the EXT2 partition to EXT3 in the previous menu if you want, but this is optional.

      7. That's it, your SD card now has a EXT2 or EXT3 partition! Restore your SD card backups.

      8. Now download Link2SD from the market, allow on SuperUser for root rights and be on your way.

      • do I actually have to use the execute the busybox installer or not?

        UPDATE:

The linked SuperUser Zip file is outdated. You will now want to download this version. instead to successfully root your device.

        • Firstly, scrimshaw and netsurfer - a huge thank you to all the work and guides you've posted on this deal so far. It's really helped me and surely helped many other people here too. However, I'm now encountering some issues.

I don't know if anyone else is getting this, but with this new update I'm constantly getting an error (Superuser has an error and is forced to close). Am I doing anything wrong? I did it with the older version before this update came out and it was absolutely fine. I was able to use all the apps without a problem and Link2SD was capable of transferring apps to the SD card.

I've rooted the device via the method you posted above (Vashe's Recovery MT, SuperUser zip file, downloaded SuperUser & Busybox from Market). Because of all this, I'm now no longer able to use Link2SD to transfer apps to the SD card.

          Any ideas?

        • I'm getting the Forced closed errors myself — I think this is just something the author broke.

There are 2 and 1 star reviews of SU on the Market after this update.

          To quote somebody:

Absolutely DO NOT update from 2.3.6.3 version. Go to XDA for this previous version. Uninstall 3.0 versions in Manage Applications and start over.

You could try rolling back to the previous 3.04 or 3.02 version of SuperUser (don't ask me where to find it) and afterwards, disable it's auto-update to remain on the last known good configuration.

          Discussion on SU on forums

But the new version works for me and my phone still remains rooted even with SU crashing occasionally.

        • Now even the older (2.3.6.1) version you linked to before doesn't really seem to work properly for me either, so I'm just gonna wait till SuperUser gets updated and gets confirmed working. Can't use Link2SD at all at the moment.

I also found another way to root (posted on Whirlpool) using SuperOneClick but I'm not trying it. Don't really need it to be rooted right now. I'm just being more picky with my apps.

        • Update again

newer versions of SuperUser on the Market (3.04 and beyond) have been reported to force close repeatedly on the Acer. It is recommended to stick with v3.02 of SuperUser. Once installed, you should disable the Auto-update feature on the market as to ensure the app doesn't get updated beyond 3.02.

    • what are the benefits of partitioning the sdcard?

      • You can install more the a few apps without running out of space :) Actually works very well.

      • +1

It's a requirement of the Link2SD application. If you don't partition your SD card, you won't be able to use this app.

It's a little different from the "App2SD" application. Link2SD lets you move your apps to your SD card, even if the application does not officially support being moved to the SD.
For e.g you can move Adobe Flash player on to SD and save about 10 megs of data on your phone.

But you do so at your own risk — some applications like widgets may stop working when moved to the SD.

  • Does anyone else find that 2.3.5 POP3 email crashes with TPG?

  • Hmmm, just bought liquid metal but not so sure now if I am game enough to upgrade, it seems more complicated by the minute for the Noobs like me which may brick the fone?
Maybe Scrimshaw, Netsurfer or anyone else with good knowledge can make a bit of pocket money just helping people like me to upgrade and unlock it please. I am sure you can make some money just list it on ebay as a service by writing a full A to Z step by step menu for the not so tech savvy.
I don't have a problem paying a small fee for it, after all it takes time to do extra detailed step by step "A to Z" instructions and maybe even compiling a CD?
If anyone list is confident and guarantee tested all works are good then list in on ebay with listing number here and I will be first to buy it, saves me downloading and reading all the various comments and still not so sure which is the sure footed approach LOL!

    • +10

If you only want to unlock the device, the steps required to do so is fairly simple.

You'd have to try pretty hard to brick your phone :)

I'll try to simplify things for you.

Pre-requisites —- things to have before you flash.

      1. Your phone, fully charged and with USB cable.
      2. A computer with SD card reader, but it's OK if you don't have an SD card reader. You can still transfer stuff to your SD card via the phone's USB mode.
      3. A blank MicroSD card. But if you're transferring the SD card from your old mobile phone, it's a good idea to have the contents of your SD card copied to your computer first, just in case you get your SD card wiped by mistake.
      4. You will need Winzip or 7zip software. Get it installed if you haven't already.

Getting ready to flash the ROM:

      1. Download this file. to your PC.

      2. While it's downloading, turn your phone on and activate USB debugging mode. Instructions here.

      3. Turn off the phone and take out the SD card, then stick the SD card into your computer's card reader. If you don't have a card reader, connect your phone to your computer in USB Download mode. (The phone has to be on of course, and you can enable USB transfer mode by switching it on in the Notifications drop down panel)

      4. In Windows, make a new folder on the SD card. Name it: acer_ug

      5. Open up the zip file you downloaded in step 1 and unzip it's contents. There is a file with a relatively long name "Acer_LiquidMT_4.000.01_AAP-GEN2_03.28.01_…..".
You must unzip and place this file into the acer_ug folder you just created on the SD card.

      6. Eject the SD card / Eject the phone and terminate the USB connection. Put the SD card back into the phone and power it off.

      7. Power it on again by pressing the CAMERA, Volume DOWN and POWER BUTTON all together simultanously. The phone will vibrate 3 times.

      8. Let it work it's magic and flash the ROM. The phone will reboot when it is finished, but in my case it just turned off. If so, turn it back on again.

      9. Test if your phone is unlocked by putting in a non-Telstra SIM card. If it doesn't ask for an unlock code, then congrats.

Additional steps: How to install the Recovery software

The Recovery 2.2 software is optional, but highly recommended. It allows you to create NAND backups of your phone should and restore them if things start to get hairy. It also lets you partition your SD card and create EXT2 partitions that can be used to extend the very limited application storage space that the Acer seems to suffer from.

This step is purely OPTIONAL, but RECOMMENDED.

      1. Go to http://android.modaco.com/topic/342583-recovery-amonra-recov…

      2. Read the instructions and then download the zip file to your desktop. When completed, unzip it's contents anywhere to your desktop.

      3. Plug your phone into your USB slot. You already have USB debugging turned on by now, so no extra steps are needed. You don't need to enable USB storage mode.

      4. Double click and run "install_recovery.cmd". Follow the onscreen prompts. Press Enter to confirm the dialogs.

      5. When your device has been successfully installed with the Recovery software and the software tells you that the install is finished, you may unplug the device.

      6. You can now boot into Recovery Mode. To do so, you must press the POWER BUTTON, VOL UP, VOL DOWN, and Camera FOCUS buttons simultaneously. (Note: The camera button is a 2 stage button. Gently pressing the button down halfway is focusing) When you feel the phone vibrate, let go of the power button and keep the others pressed down before releasing.

      7. In Recovery mode, you can navigate the menu by pressing UP or DOWN on your volume keys, and the Camera button will select things. The Power button is the Back button and is sometimes used to confirm items.

Feel free to perform a NANDROID Backup (this reads your device memory and writes it to the SD card for storage).
Nandroid Backups are how you restore your device if it fails to boot properly or if you brick your phone.

You can also follow the instructions I wrote above on how to Partition your SD card. This is for Link2SD users only, you don't have to do it if you're not keen on using Link2SD.

Scrimshaw, a BIG Thank You for the efforts of taking the trouble to write such a detailed step by step for a dumbo tech like me :)
Thanks mate you are a legend and is one of the reason why many like me am addicted to this site, not only you can get a real deal but the wealth of information from some members is truly inspirational!

      • so this updates it to gingerbread?

      • I managed to upgrade my first one to 2.3.5 just by:
        1) Make \acer_ug directory on SD card using card reader and windows computer.
        2) Copy .bin file to \acer_ug directory on SD card
        3) Put SD card in phone
        4) Turn phone on while holding the button sequence down.

Done. Unlocked, Virgin SIm no probs.

Only thing…Radio does not find any stations…..and can't find how to switch out of Acer UI to normal Android vanilla UI.

Going to do another tonight to find out if it's the firmware/ROM or my handset that's the issue with the radio. I tested the radio BEFORE I started the 2.3.5 upgrade tonight to know the hardware works.

        • I have the same problem, I can't switch to android vanilla ui :( the acer ui is horrible.

        • BOTH FM radios work tonight with a different headset plugged in. Looks like I have a dodgy Acer headset with a broken earth or something (no antenna) and got no reception.

Had a problem with upgrading - unlocking the second one tonight. When I first started it up, it didn't like the Virgin SIM. "No SIM installed". Put the Telstra SIM in, all booted up, then put the Virgin SIM back in, all fine now. YMMV.

        • It's that bad? I actually like the Breeze UI. Not a fan of the lockscreen though, I can't use my PowerAMP lockscreen widget on it.

        • is there no way to change it? Does installing custom rom change the ui?
the breeze ui isn't horrible as i just said, but I'd rather have the vanilla android ui.

        • For people who prefer a UI which is more like Android UI, get Launcher Pro from the market and use it instead of Acer's UI. Launcher Pro is similiar to the default Android UI, except it is better (you can control the number of homescreens for example).

Get it from the market, then press Home button, it will ask you which launcher you want - you can set it to use Laucher Pro all the time if you like.

I tried this on a different phone - I actually don't mind the Acer one.

Just for your information, there are lots of launchers available for Android. If you like Windows phone 7, there is one that's like that. Android is quite flexible.

      • Update

There is some confusion in step 6 of this guide — you need to actually turn your phone off first before you can boot into Recovery Mode.

        So step 5B would be:
Turn your Acer off after unplugging from USB.

  • edit: nevermind. Maybe I was just too impatient with the reboot, or wiping all user data fixed it, but it is back now.
    And I have SIP, yay!

edit 2: spoke too soon. It has just gone back to that horrid logo and tune. Crashed while I was not even using it.

    OK, I screwed it.
Had 2.3.5 working fine, tried to add AOSP_Sip_3.026.01_upgrade.zip , and get stuck on boot.
Worse, the "SD Download Mode" no longer works "IMAGE_DIR_NOT_FOUND".
What is that? The acer_ug directory is still there with the BIN file.
I can get into recovery mode, but that will not install a BIN file. What next please?
(Somehow I forgot to do a backup after installing recovery.)

    • I downloaded and installed an older ROM (3.27 = android 2.3.4) which worked in SD download mode.
Got recovery and AOSP_Sip_3.026.01_upgrade installed, but not rooted - SU will not install.

SIP on Gingerbread is not good over 3G as no g729 codec included.
Will take tech stuff to other forums now.

      • If you're using Optus or Vodafone, forget SIP. It works pretty much flawlessly on NextG. I have been using only sip on this phone since getting it Friday afternoon.

SU will also work. You need to download the kernel and user packages and install them using the recovery. Mine is all working fine with 2.3.4, SuperUser and SIP.

I can be done so stick with it.

        • If you're using Optus or Vodafone, forget SIP. It works pretty much flawlessly on NextG.

I've also had excellent service with SIP on '3' with a Nokia. Optus/Voda bad, I agree.
