  • does it include tax

Wouldn't it still be cheaper to pay for a month of Amazon Prime for $7, making it $389 in the other deal?

  • +2

The shipping charge and GST spoils an otherwise solid deal. Amazon US via AU + 1 months Prime is around $10 cheaper. at the moment

  • +6

The 12TB is has been around $364 @ Amazon regularly for the last few weeks, with free shipping for Prime

Normally $360-$375 at amazon delivered (free with prime) so sorry not a deal from B&H.

  • I ordered an Amazon one 3 weeks ago on a Sunday night and it arrived on the next Friday!!!

In the $360's at Amazon but with the dollar near 65c again, I think we will see it in the $330's in coming weeks (if dollar holds)

Wait it out if you can

I'm waiting for it to break into the 300-330 range before I buy 4.

And I thought I was a digital hoarder.

      • Guilty!

    • Assuming you’re gunna be shucking those be careful putting all your eggs in one basket and buying 4 drives from most likely the same manufacturing batch. If you get a dodgy batch they are at risk of all failing or all failing around the same time. This is assuming you don’t have 30 drives and this is just a drop in the ocean.

      • Good point, something I am aware of but had forgotten.

Normally it would be a drop in the ocean but I'm replacing a bunch of old drives all at once. In 12TB capacity I'll need 6 in total but can get away with an initial order of 3 and then incrementally add the remaining 3 at separate times

EDIT: I've always used HGST NAS drives (a quality bump up from WD/Seagate) but I'm starting to question the extra expense in that approach now. I'll still have cold storage and off-site for critical data. I think I can get by. The only drive I ever lost in 10 years of running my NAS's was a Seagate Desktop drive that had no business being in my NAS anyway.

        • Does this fit in the Synology nas or do I have to do the 3.3 pin jack?

          • @kaal: All depends on the drives you receive inside. But from most reports they dont require the 3.3 pin trick.

        • HGST is WD

          • @alvian: Owned by. Yet very different in terms of reliability. Both HGST and Toshiba are in a tier above WD/Seagate filling what I see as a space before moving into Enterprise drives (and the prices reflect this)

            • +1

@Click_It: HGST brand is no more. All products since mid 2018 bore WD branding. Example.

Toshiba manufactures its own storage products. Both HGST and Toshiba HDDs descent from technology from Hitachi and IBM. Back in the DeathStar days no one would touch IBM drives.
