Yes, a HDMI cable deal…

My Samsung N950 doesn't seem to like most HDMI cables (HDMI Switching issue) but it seems to play well with Monoprice cables.

One of the cheaper Premium Certified Cables in the market. I've tried the one from GTek and Amazon Basics but haven't had much joy.

Fulfilled by Amazon Australia, "normal" price is $22.99.

Same product from Amazon US is $25.92 + Shipping.

  • Never heard the brand but its just me

They’re a pretty big brand for cables. But honestly, have you heard of many cable brands at all? I haven’t

      • +14

I will never forget HN trying to sell me 2x $199 Monster HDMI cables back in 2010 after I had spent $8K on 2x Plasma TVs

        • Did you know HN eventually bought Monster?

          • +2

@justtoreply: Beats by Dre were co-created my Monster.

            It all makes sense now.

          • @justtoreply: HN part own the Australian distributor, don't think they have bought Monster.

            • @Blackrose: Oh really, maybe the HN staff that told me that was wrong. I never double checked.

'HN owns 60% Ariston who distribute Monster?' There's actually some variety in what online articles say, too hard to resolve and my care factor is too low.

              • @justtoreply: That explains why the salesman was keen to sell the Ariston branded stove to us when we were in the market…

                • @cray: You'll need a Monster Cable to get the best out of it

          • +1

@justtoreply: Pretty sure HN doesn't own monster.

      • +1

        Yes.

        Anker
        Belkin
        Mophie
        Monoprice

Monoprice are decent from what I know, not the best but very good for the money.

      • These just look like a generic cable with their branding.
Look the same as prolink premium cables.

    • in the guitar community, they are known for decently priced amps

  • Do you find that this cable is very thick and doesn't like to bend?

Some input devices have weird angles for entry for HDMI and sometimes thick cables don't play well :(

    • +2

yes, that's my only gripe with this cable especially at the soundbar input. It still works, just need to be careful when you go about the bend.. They have a thinner cable now which is also certified but I didn't want to take the risk.

      • +5

There’s right-angle HDMI adapters for this.

Officeworks has 1.5m cables for $3.98.

While a digital signal is a digital signal and you either get a signal or not, it is worth paying a bit extra for a more robust cable and connectors than cheapies that can often have drop outs with high bandwidth devices in particular.

That said, while monoprice have a good reputation they are usually ridiculously overpriced, and this deal gets them to the upper end of “almost reasonable”. If you want to support domestic and want decent, try Jamel cables from Perth.

      • Jamell's cables aren't very cheap for non-certified cables but will check them out if I'm in the area.. I have at least 6 x HDMI cables of various lengths (cheapies) not being used..

      • +2

Digital is not "signal or not". Although for short cables this is usually the case.

Long runs or connecting through items like switchers or splitters, green artifacting is common. If the devices connected have crappy error handling you are more likely to get the "no signal" than artifacting too.

I can't remember what my specific case was, I might have had a pcie tv recorder or splitter and/or long cable.

It's probably <0.1% of people who would need to care. Hence it's a well propagated myth.

This deal is $8.44 per 1.8m cable delivered, Jamel is $15.10 for 1.5m and $16.20 for 2m, plus $6.95 shipping.

Doesn't that make Jamel's cables far more expensive than these?

        • Yes it does. Missed the 2 pack bit. I do like jamel cables though.

    "Certified" for what exactly?

      https://www.hdmi.org/spec/premiumcable

It's tested to ensure that the cables are able to actually provide enough bandwidth to your device. The cheap OW/Kmart cables would do the job most of the time but some devices are just very picky. Ask the people with Apple TV 4k and you'll know.

      Edit: I got beat x 3

This is the only HDMI cable test program That uses a proprietary 2-level commercial grade mobile scanning app available for Android and Apple and also in the top 10 China app stores

      Hmmm… Ok.
(quietly deletes 1-level consumer grade mobile scanning app).

    • My wife got me certified. Which reminds me, medication time.

  • +1

Based on the specs, looks like 2.0 HDMI standard. Doesn't otherwise appear to provide this information in the amazon listing.

Does this support the new HDMI 2.1?
      New User U on Nov 28, 2017
      BEST ANSWER: Hi User,

This cable meets all of the existing requirements being tested for at the HDMI ATC. Currently HDMI is only able to certify what are essentially HDMI 2.0 cables, (NOTE: Please don't refer to our cables or any HDMI cables by HDMI version numbers, because it's technically incorrect) with testing for HDMI 2.1 opening up sometime later this year.

On the bright side, these certified cables are guaranteeing performance for devices that are on the market today. They will give you the absolute top performance that the technology is capable of right now. HDMI 2.1 is still being ratified and developed by hardware manufacturers so there is still plenty of time before we have to worry.
      Manuel H Staff on Aug 7, 2018

    • Since the introduction of the HDMI 1.4 spec in 2009 the HDMI.org banned the use of version numbers on HDMI cables.
Therefore any cable which claims to be HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 is breaking the HDMI.org packaging code and is not entitled to use the HDMI logo.
Instead the HDMI.org introduced four distinct cable specifications

      • Four distinct cable specifications…… And what might those be, the Gbps?

EDIT: Okay basically I was right, I saw your post mentioning 2 of them below.

Keep in mind only rated for 18gbps. Monoprice do have 48gbps cables too. Who knows if there is any difference though besides the package labelling. I was using an old cable between the receiver and the new Cx OLED. Was getting random blank screens whilst playing on the PS4 (HDR games). I switched to a new 18gbps cable and no more random blank screens. The original cable I was using, I bought a batch of them, and all were causing problems. Not sure if old hdmi spec or defective.

    • +3

Premium High Speed HDMI = 18gbps
Ultra High Speed HDMI = 48gbps

      • Simple answer for sammy is to do with the bitrate your tv needs a HDMI 2.0+ cable to deliver the HDR detail at 4k 50 hz due to it most likely using HDR10 (10 bit colour). The old cable wasn't upto the job bandwidth wise due to be <HDMI2.0

I've had some issues in the past with display port and cheap cables not running the 1.4 standard to deliver the required bitrate for a high display/resolution panel.

Also can strongly reccommend Accell branded certified cables they always work.

  • They look the same as prolink premium cables.

  • +1

    I get $25.92

    • +3

looks like it's all gone at the lower price.. very cheeky of Amazon.

      • That's how their site/listings work, unfortunately

  • +1

Monoprice Ultra Slim Series cables are pretty awesome, much easier to work with especially if you have a bunch of stuff plugged into a receiver.

  • Audioquest Diamond or nothing.

Man I went through so many different cables for my k950 too! Thought it was because I bought a refurb model. Glad to see it's not just me.

    • It's a Samsung problem. I've got quite a few cables lying around. It seems like they didn't fix the HDMI Switching issue even in the newer soundbars.

Just make sure your cable is not too long (3m max) and ideally premium certified cables. Almost bought a $50 Belkin cable but just couldn't stomach it.

I might upgrade to the new LG atmos soundbar to match my B8 in the future when it's < $1k (hopefully it reviews well).

  • I am not seeing the discounted price, has the promotion ended?

    • Item now being fulfilled by Amazon US @ $25.92 for 2pk, plus shipping if not buying > $49.

I won't consider this as a "bargain" due to shipping but still not a bad price for 2 x certified 18gbps cables if you're willing to wait.

or get a 3pk as per comment below: https://www.amazon.com.au/Monoprice-134212-HDMI-Cable/dp/B07…

  • Aw price went back up to $25

    • Just get the 3pk for $25 using the link by DrC

          • @cray: That is 1 cable for $25 local. You link is same price for 2 shipped from overseas. Need $49 minimum order for free shipping

            • @EnALup: Main pic shows 3pcs. But yes under number of items it says 1. You could order and see how many they send and raise a dispute if they only sent 1, but I wouldn't take my chances personally. Sorry that you missed out on the 2 pack.

              • @cray: Yea. I have lot of cables, but recently strange artifacts in home theatre projector and issues with HDMI cable and my monitor and laptop, made me think to invest in something decent.
Some good look insulated cables are not that good I realized.

                • +1

@EnALup: Definitely look into getting a certified premium to be safe. Anything under 18gbps uncertified isn't really worth buying, which I've found out the hard way. Try and keep the cable short if possible. My experience with the Gtek certified isn't too bad @ $19ea with friends/family jbhifi commercial, but only available in 2m. Monoprice is slightly more popular.
