  • Anyone in Victoria know how much a building permit would cost for this? Since this is over 10sqm it requires a building permit

    • Varies based on install cost and local fees

      • Are we talking hundreds of dollars or tens of dollars (for permit only). Can you diy the install once you have a permit?

        • you can as an owner builder, registration with the VBA required

    • You also can't locate any part of it in front of your home - it must be no further forward than level with the front of your home building (unless you want to go through town planning).
So if you want to install it at the front of your driveway, parking your car just upto the footpath and freeing up the rest of your driveway for other things … nope.

  • +3

I am doing a DIY flat roof Stratco pergola 5 X 10 mt2 in Casey council got of phone to planing yesterday an have been quoted…
    $960.00 for application for permit.
    $1170.00 for actual permit.
    $250.00 X 4 site inspections - cheapest contractor I could find.
All up it costs more for the fercakaner paperwork than the the materials to build it.
Other council's have different prices so check with them first….Casey council is the most expensive.

    • So >$3000 to install a $1200 car port . What a rort .

    • Something is vastly wrong with your prices. This would typically be about $1000 in total, including a frame/final inspection if there wasn't any issues with planning. Victoria may have an inspection required for a class 10 footings, but it's not a requirement in Queensland and we are considerably stricter than other states.

    • You don't need to get your permits from the council - Google building permits in your area.
I built a large deck with roof, and I paid about $800 total for the permits, including the multiple inspections, from a local building permit place.
I had to produce my own detailed plans to go this route though, if I'd used a local draftsman it would have doubled that cost.

    • Most councils charge a ridiculous amount these days for Building Permits to push applicants to private Building Surveyors. Most Councils are NOT set up to handle large amount of Building Permits.

  • We can help you with the Structural Certification for Building Permit in Victoria, involving slab/footing/wind load assessment.
Contact Les Kroenert & Assocs, Kilsyth. (03) 9723 0300. Registered in NSW as well.
I don't know if relevant self promoting is allowed in the comment.

    • Do you need permit to install this and how much is the cost?

      • In VIC, you do need a Building Permit, Google "Practice Note 32 - When is a building permit required?".
You may need a Planning Permit, which is quite complicated to explain.
Mark it up where you're placing the carport on Google Maps and send it through with your address, we'll give you a quote.

    • They are special order. Bunnings don't normally hold stock of these

  • Thanks everyone for the great advice and I will definately call re permit as I no longer have the patience to talk/argue with council…funny thing is I had the area concreted last century 1986 with minimum 4in x 80mpa Crete an f52 REO which at the time was overkill for the requirements of stirrups but told again by council it's unacceptable.
