    HD. Blurgh.

Kingston A400 240gb rrp is $139? Are we back in 2015?

No ssd and only 4gb of ram. Not cheap enough for those specs….

  • +3

RRP $800 and no SSD and only 4gb ram? I can see why it's discounted but they need to knock off another $200 to make it look any good.

this is a DIY project for someone I guess:
    - throw out spinning drive
    - put in SSD (there's nvme slot too, so you have a choice of 2.5 SATA or NVME or M.2 or combination of the above
    - replace LCD panel
    - put in second RAM stick (4GB will do)

and you got yourself a rather capable machine, 8th gen refresh i5 is only a tiny bit slower than modern 10th gen CPU's, and you can do plenty and even get some gaming done

but that's only if you already have all the necessary parts available, because once you factor all that in, woo hoo you're better off buying something that is already configured for you, so it's a shitty deal in my book.

I like your approach, in fact my own ThinkPad A485 I went this route for 2x8GB RAM + NVMe + SATA SSD.
But like you said, $649 is still a rather bad price for a barebone 8th i5 with HD screen, could do a lot better with ThinkPad deals imo.

      • where did you source A485 from?

        • It was a Singapore unit, I got it about 1.5 years ago. Good price/perf but the Ryzen 2700U is super inefficient especially when idle. It still handles everything I need from it pretty well though so no reason to upgrade just yet.
EDIT: shipped from China though, I believe any customized unit is shipped from there anyways. It's got its own page on Lenovo AU so I guess it used to be available there too?

          • @rookie317: yes power efficiency is why I don't want to touch amd in laptops just yet. I have a Latitude 3490 from one of deals here, running i3-7130u and not much reason to upgrade just yet. dual hard drives, I play half life 2 and edit photos no issues haha and it has LTE and lasts whole day

of course this is not a good deal.
so my question: as most likely no one will be able to sell these laptop, what happen with them for example a year or two from now? who will end up getting them? will HP writes them off and throw them away cheap? anyone in the industry know about unsold laptops?

  • +5

You got a lot of balls posting a laptop with a HDD and only 4GB of RAM on here, lol.

    • +1

Don't forget that clear crisp HD screen ;)

      • as crispy as pork belly cripsy skin ala masterchef?

I use to purchase alot of the HP 250 G3/G4/G5/G6
but in 2020, the lack of a 1080 resolution screen now rules them out for me.

    720P / Non-SSD / 4GB Ram

this is a pass now days for me

The HP X360-14-dh1155tu for $714.45 deal is much better.

1366 & 768 display, 4GB RAM and 500GB mechanical hard disk is poor value, sounds like specifications that belong in sub $500 laptops.

  • +2

$649 plus delivery - crikey, wouldn't it make much more sense to buy the $777 Lenovo deal from the other day for only a little more??

  • +4

Avoid at all costs. This is a SHIT deal. Surprised this deal isn't negged more.

    • It's too shitty that people not even interested to neg……
