Oppo Reno 5G 256GB $599 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

1870

Looks like JB Hifi has dropped their price to match Harvey Norman https://www.harveynorman.com.au/oppo-reno-5g-256gb-optus-var…

This doesn't look like it is associated with any provider so perhaps will get updates quicker

Also this is my first post so feedback appreciated :)

I bought the Harvey Norman one so feel free to ask me questions about the phone as well. Overall, it's a really great phone for the price and no complaints so far.

    • Is it single sim?

      • single, the 4G version is dual sim

  • wondering if it is a better deal than my Note 10 Plus 5G that I bought 2 days back for $1199 from JBHiFi. exactly 50% cheaper

    • samsung using exynos, oppo using snap dragon

      • The S10 / Note 10 generation is a equal match.

I heard the S20 generation is quite a bit different…

    • -1

On paper 50/50. Realistically Note 10 will be way better supported in terms of software update and warranty services. As others had point out its at this price because OPPO is dropped from Australia market. So good luck on RMA and OTA updates if your version can't get updates direct from OPPO.

      • Not sure where this information is coming that oppo is dropped from au market. They still have a lot of mid range phones and find x2 is coming soon.

      • +2

I think just Oppo 5G Reno just is being dropped for Carrier Plan in prepation of Find X2 Pro (9th June). but OPPO (as company)they will still exist in Australia.

        • I think this is all it is. Old stock being moved out to make room. Oppo probably isn't a big enough brand in Aus to be able to carry multiple generations the way Samsung and Apple can, so clearing the floor of the older model and simplifying user choice is a smart strategy.

    • +1

Depends if you prefer the S-Pen but I must say Samsung One UI has more customisations and easier to use than Oppo's ColorOs. I used Nova launcher on my Oppo Reno 5G which makes the experience better

Has anyone been able to get audio through Type-C (apart from using the horrible included earphones)? Couldn't output to an Apple Type-C adapter or Fiio E17K. Enabled OTG in settings and it detects the devices, but no output :(. Worked on my M20P.

    • Mine worked fine. I use the type c to 3.5mm adapter that came with my pixel2xl. Could not find the adapter that came with essential ph1. Will update if i get hold of it.

    • Update: can confirm the Google Type-C to 3.5 adapter works (thanks @lookingForCheapDeal), and the Fiio also works (had a dodgy Type-C to USB adapter).

    • Go into developer mode and change how the usb-c outputs. Mine was set to charging only. I think you can change it to MIDI. That should work.

Don’t forget you can get JB Hifi gift vouchers for 5% off via AGL Rewards (if paying via bank transfer, 4% via credit card) and 3% via MacQuarie Bank Rewards.

The former takes 2-3 days, the latter is instantaneous.

  • This or the xiaomi mi 9T/mi 9t pro?? which is better and why

    • Is the Mi 9T Pro even available any more? I can't find stock anywhere

      • +1

        Jb, reginal area for 9t.

  • Not sure about this one.

I got the deal from HN two weeks ago.
I'm coming from Oppo R7Plus, (so I'm pro Oppo) but I really find the battery very underwhelming..

I manually adjust the brightness throughout the day.
Running Nova Launcher Prime as I was on the R7, which is using 9, 11, 12% each day.

    • I was having similar battery issues. Installed AccuBattery which showed that my phone was not going in deep sleep when screen was off. Recommended restarting phone. Worked like a charm.. Battery lasts way more than a day now.btw liked app so much, paid for the pro version.

      • Did it tell you this information in the free version? Where abouts on AccuBattery does it tell you whether the phone is going into deep sleep mode or not when the screen is off? Thanks.

  • +1

Ok… I just pick it up for my sister.. this is not the "Unbranded" , but this is a Telstra Variant (unlocked)…

    • +1

I just refunded mine from harvey norman thinking I could get an “unbranded” one for the same price. Now I feel stupid.

      • +4

Now Gerry doesn't get your money. I consider that a win.

        • Correction and update, Gerry did get my money because they refuse to refund me money despite telling me I could change my mind within 14 days and offered store credit. I kept the phone but rest assured they won’t have my business anymore.

      • +1

Buy it back is not too late. They share same firmware, so they are same.once you delete the o or t preinstall apps.

It's easy to get at least 5% off JB gift card. So maybe save you couple bucks.

Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd, commonly referred to as OPPO, is a Chinese consumer electronics and mobile communications company headquartered in Dongguan China.

    It is Chinese brand.

Why you should worry if you have a Chinese smartphone - theguardian

  • Where can you purchase the unbranded one? The one with carrier is very slow with software update

    • Do not think you can get it anywhere now. It's an old model, and not may retailers are selling it. This could be the last chance get either Telstra or optus

    • +2

I don't think so these are really carrier branded phones. Firmware on both HN (Optus) and JBhifi (Telstra) are same as unbranded. So updates should hit these at the same time as unbranded. Its just that probably HN got their stock from Optus and JB from Telstra.

  • +2

I got this from HN's deal. Very happy with the phone. Worth the price.

  • +3

Great deal, I was tempted but remembered I'm avoiding Chinese products as they are abusing our barley farmers.

  • +2

Loving this Oppo.. I was super disappointing with the overheating of a mess of the exynos from both the S20+ and S20 Ultra.

  • To the owners of this phone.

Can you confirm that the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras don't work in video mode?

    Thanks in advance :)

    • +1

Yeah doesn't work, video only uses main camera

  • Great phone, have had it since release.

  • anyone with this phone experience any wifi drop for no reason?
i was doing setup, find wifi drops 2 times already. still shows wifi icon, however won't load anything. have to turn off and on to make it work? can not keep it if this is a lemon.

  • Does it have wireless charging

    • +1

      Nope

  • deal break single sim. damn

  • Hi guys, how do you switch between camera? I can only switch to potrait, not sure how to get to the wide angle camera, help please

    • If you pinch to zoom out, it'll switch to the wide-angle camera.

    • You can also press the wide angle icon at the top

    • +1

or there is 3 line menu on the left, click the menu and it will show all modes include win-angle and night mode.

  • +2

Looks out of stock at most jbs in Vic…

Edit - no delivery or click and collect.

Harvey Norman seems the only option.

  • Could existing user confirm if Wi-Fi Calling feature works on Telstra Network?

I live in poor network area and require Wi-Fi calling to work.

Been on call with Telstra for 90 minutes with no answer :-(. JB says not sure. Oppo support says the phone has Wi-Fi Calling but of it's compatible/supported by Telstra is an uncertainty.

    • Morning mate, can confirm telstra doesn’t support wifi calling for any Oppo phone.

    • +3

I can confirm VoWifi (Wifi Calling) works on Optus and Telstra Variant… as I have Both….

  • Darn, just bought it yesterday from Harvey Norman. Have a friend who works at JB, of I could've gotten a discount on top that'd have been awesome.

Excellent phone so far, love it outside of some quirks (vibrates when YouTube annotations[links to other clips] pop up mid clip) & no dark mode for the settings & notifications yet despite being OLED.

    • +1

ColorOS 7 has dark mode, just a question of playing the waiting game for the update.

  • Bought this after coming from a pixel 2 XL which had dead pixels after 14 months(!).
Missing the cleanliness of stock Android. Other cons:
    - No Dark Mode
    - Notification icons not on always on clock
    - Can't add more than one of any widget, super annoying as my Home Assistant Widgets are used for automation toggles
    - No USB-PD, instead have to get a damn VOOC charger

Most of these are outweighed by:
    - Camera is ridiculously good
    - Comes with a case which is very rugged and beautiful. It even protrudes over the screen to avoid drops. It's not just your average clear gel case.
    - Snappy fast
    - Battery is really good
    - Fingerprint unlock and face unlock work a treat

    • Dark mode coming with next color os update.
Notification icon is annoying, at least message and WeChat shows icon, Gmail doesn't. Hope next update will fix it.
I do not use widges, can not comment.

      • +1

Read reviews of Coloros7 and it seems to have been fixed. All notifications will show on the off screen clock

        • Yeah I had a read of Color OS features and release date. The update for the Reno and Reno 10x Zoom was originally tipped to be released in Q2 2020. Gives us just under 6 weeks to get it, that's if Telstra isn't a bottleneck in this case.

          • @bbqandbargains: Telstra and Optus sadly…

            • @jo32011: You think that this Telstra model would be dependent on the Optus model for updates and vice versa? I never understood why carriers have to be so involved with OS updates…

  • Thanks, Just bought one and waiting for shipping.

  • Anyone post any 5G speed tests with there phone 😬👍

    • I got 165Mbps download and 50mbps Upload on Telstra in Western Sydney. However the coverage is limited.

      • Not bad, the highest I could get on my 4G Note 9 was around 358 Mbps download 42 Mbps upload though buy luck found a perfect area for it (now my official testing spot in Melbourne) wish my place were I live was the same only doing around 30 Mbps download there, tempting to buy the cheapest possible 5G mobile to use as a wifi modem WiFi hotspot as the portable 5G dongle modems are expensive though I'll wait till prices drop more

  • Just dropped and smashed the screen on my Oneplus 6. Tossing up between this and the Oneplus 7T or Oneplus 8. Obviously this is cheaper, but any other thoughts?

    • +1

If you are looking at high refresh rate, then oneplus.

    • +1

I would say OxygenOS is a better OS than ColorOS so that would need to be taken into consideration as well. Oppo will get 2 years local warranty rather than dealing with overseas vendor since you can only import the Oneplus. DXOmark https://www.dxomark.com/category/smartphone-reviews gave the Oppo a higher ranking than both the Oneplus 7

      • +1

Oneplus 7 pro has better screen but Reno has better camera

    • I'm not a gamer, so I guess the refresh late is less relevant.

This is my third Oneplus, so I like OxygenOS, but then again, I don't use the stock launcher.

      • High refresh rate is not all about gaming. You have to experience it by yourself, you can not feel it according to the review videos. People say, once you tried at least 90hz, you can not go back. Even for every day use.

        • If you can't go back once you've tried it, I'd better not try it :)

          • @prhino: That's my plan…my monitors, laptop, TV all run at 60Hz, so don't want that all to be ruined by a 90Hz phone!

  • What colour is the protective cover? Trying to work out if it matters which colour phone to order.

    • +1

      I would say charcoal/dark brown

    • +1

The case matches well with the black phone

  • Anyone experience GOOGLE app battery drain issue?

    • i had the google app foreground activity time 4 mins, background activity time 12 hrs3omins since last night. used 40.37% of the battery.
i checked my pixel 2 xl 11 hrs 30min while in active use, 0min in background.

      • Restart the phone. Try if it fixes it.. Fixed my battery issues.

        • I updated to latest software, and did 2 times factory reset. Then start to setup all my apps. Restart couple times. by the way how to check screen on time? can not find it under BATTERY

now under power usage i had chrome 29.27% 33min foreground 3hrs30mins background
          google 25.29% 13mins 4hrs 13min
          youtube 17.18 15mins 3hrs

Also not sure if you use google assistant, i can not use “ok google” when it is locked. Just no response. Wakeup the phone even still locked, it works. I think it works on pixel2xl.

          • @ce5himm: Google doesn't even show up in power usage for me. I've disabled OK Google detection, and others with drain seem to have it enabled.

My power usage stats for comparison. Battery life has been getting progressively better for me.

            • @donnot: That's i use to get from pixel 2xl. Must be one other app keep it active at background. I will have to find it

              • @ce5himm: i took the sim out and put it back to my old phone. leave reno and pixel 2xl both standby, both have wifi/bluetooth/location/off screen clock, gamil push notification all on. reno drains 1%/hr(brand new), pixel 2xl is like 1.8%/hr (26 months old). not sure if it's average as you guys. i do not really impressed. i remember when i first got my pixel 2xl, 8hr standby normally drain 1-2% max. i thought nowadays flagship-like phone should all doing battery like that.
i am going to use my old phone until android 10 arrives. reset everything again, to see if the battery gets better.

                • @ce5himm: I have the similar issue with the Google App thing running in the background. I uninstalled Google photos and disabled any auto-sync on Google apps and account in settings. I suspect that even if I disabled auto-sync in Google apps , they will still try to connect and sync. So better off unintall them. That helped a little. But I still need to monitor it for few more days. Standby time I tried last time was 5% for 13 hours. Generally screen-on time uses 12-13% per hour. You can download AccuBattery go track these data.

  • Dang appears to already be out of stock everywhere in Sydney :(

  • Can anyone advise how to delete pre-installed Telstra apps please?

    • +1

App management-show system processes. Find it and uninstall

      • Thanks very much!

      • Interesting. I just tried that and there were three Facebook processes running despite it not being installed.

        • Couldn’t find the Telstra apps in there either.

  • Received an update A21 with May security patch. Wired that cos 7 coming this month and they still push a security patch.

    • Fingers crossed that it is coming….

    • I haven't received anything for my optus variant Reno 5G so far

      • Should be push in batches, maybe wait for couple of days. It's a small updates only around 335mb

  • +2

Optus Variant has just received ColorOs7. 3.26Gb :)

    • wow good news. telstra as well cos 7.1 c26

      • Is it colorOS 7.1 Android 10?

        • Yes
