Oppo Reno 5G 256GB $599 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

1870

Looks like JB Hifi has dropped their price to match Harvey Norman https://www.harveynorman.com.au/oppo-reno-5g-256gb-optus-var…

This doesn't look like it is associated with any provider so perhaps will get updates quicker

Also this is my first post so feedback appreciated :)

I bought the Harvey Norman one so feel free to ask me questions about the phone as well. Overall, it's a really great phone for the price and no complaints so far.

Compatible with the Telstra 5G network

I think this is a hint

    • Of what? When they wrote that, Telstra was probably the only live 5G network. And this phone only support N78.

  • I'm assuming you could go to OW and get them to price beat?

    • Ow do not have them in stock I think

      • +1

that's because this is a old model JB likes to flog very old models as clearance.

        • -2

I don't think this is an old model, I believe this is the newer model to the Oppo Reno 10x zoom

          • +3

@TommyG3: All SD855 are becoming old model now as SD865 already out for few months

    • +8

so i assume i can drop the idea of buying local stock of One plus in australia

    • @battler

Not sure why you got negged, but I upvoted you to compensate.

      Thanks for the link

      • cheers.
I made no comment in the affirmative or negtive.
Actually, I saw it in the news a week ago that Harvey Norman were 'dumping stock' and posted more for that reason than any political motivation!
FWIW, I think the price is very good for the features.

Wow, so people are ok with the US govt having their data but not China? Who really cares at this point? Not like most here would ever visit China anyway so why the big deal? All countries are just as bad if you look deep enough.

      • +14

Wow, so people are ok with the US govt having their data but not China?

People are stupid. There’s no other way around it, they simply lack intelligence.

They have been brainwashed to think that the Chinese government wants their data lol. What would they do with it?

On the other hand, nsa and the big companies have a big party with al their data.

        Makes me shake my head.

        • -8

          Do some research

      • +13

The chinese govt is evil. (not saying Chinese people are). That government has forcefully taken a lot of areas from neighbouring countries. A lot of sea area is claimed and are notorious for many other things. Ultimately it can be allied countries vs china. you want Australia to be on chinese side?

        • +27

Chinese govt is smart evil. US govt is stupid evil.
Both have our data and Australia openly allows spying on its citizens through the Five Eyes system.

          • +8

@Caped Baldy: At least we don’t go missing and our families are killed because of what we say and do

          • +3

@Caped Baldy: Just because US govt isn't that much evil to Australia, UK and other supporting countries doesn't mean it is stupid. They think Australians as friends.
Chinese govt seems smart evil because they really think you're the enemy.

        • +7

They definitely are, but lesser than we are and the so called allies. How many innocent people have we killed in the name of bringing peace and crap thousands of kilometres away?
As if we didn't do that to East Timor, I wish we applied the same view on our own actions. Or is it ok if we do it?

          • -2

@nadan: Most governments do/have done horrible things and there’s no excuse for any of that (profit is definitely not a reason to fck over other countries), but the point is the CCP are in there own league of fcked up government, Saudi Arabia is a close second

        • +12

So Hawaii and 'American' Samoa among other places don't count when you're talking about stealing land from sovereign states? Righto.

          • -3

@Mechz: So America did it, now it is ok for China to do it? Who's next? At least Samoa has rights, freedom and good financial backing. Look at Tibet, China doesn't just claim the areas, it changes their system, currency, beliefs everything. And they are worse off in the long run as those areas are used only for sucking supplies, labour and resources. A Chinese makes $100 a day and a tibetian $12 a day

            • +6

@dan0909: May I ask for the source of your data? Fake news?

            • +8

@dan0909: Essentially you are saying it is okay if it's America doing it.
Did the Americans change the system and everything for the American Indians? Oh even more, there were massacres:).
Go and ask the native Americans if they are enjoying the 'freedom' and 'financial backing' there, if that's too difficult, try it with the Aboriginals.

            • +13

@dan0909: Do you read any history of what Tibet looked like before becoming part of China? Or are you just pretending to be blind for the good things that's happening in Tibet.

They had a class system and slavery was common, Dalai Lama was the king/owner of everything. Whatever they are today still is an improvement to what they were.

Using your argument, at least Tibetans today have the rights not to be slaves and good financial backing.

            • +7

@dan0909: Did you know that American Samoans can't even vote in the presidential elections? Most Samoans live under the poverty line and the males typically have to join the military just to provide for their family?

            • +4

@dan0909: serfdom in Tibet back then sure looks better than earning $12 a day huh
              https://www.google.com/search?q=serfdom+in+Tibet&sxsrf=ALeKk…

      • +4

Oh boy you must have been living under a rock, CCP isn’t just bad like other governments, no, they are straight up evil!

      • The US is not a communist country….

    • +6

Time to start the revolution banning and boycott Chinese products. Our revenge on them seeing they want to stop us investigating Covid-19 independeny. Stop sending milk powder to them, ban it. See what their citizens will do. They are using their powers and force upon other countries to obey and not ask questions. That is BS.

If all 100+ countries supporting the case, boycott China maybe it will work.

      • -2

people get banned on this site for criticizing the CCP…or China….

        • +2

          Since when?

      • +17

Boycotting sounds great to the average Joe but it doesn't do anything constructive nor helpful. This simplistic view of how the world economy works is why we have Trump voted in by the very people who will suffer the most from protectionism.

People forget how our prosperity for the last 20+ years is fundamentally due to our increased national income from our mineral/tourism/education/agricultural exports. Why was there a sudden massive increase in demand for our exports? Because Chinese workers and their middle class has money to buy things that they want to buy. How do they suddenly was able to afford this? By exporting products that they make (efficiently, economy of scale) to developed countries like Australia. Our income has suddenly grown because of exports and our expenses on imported goods have decreased, instead of spending $2000 on a TV, we now have $500 TVs, the other $1500 you can spend on another thing (yes, we are very materialistic). If we start to not buy Chinese goods, they will have less income, and buy less mineral/tourism/education/agriculture products, and this will decrease our income too! Boycotts only hurts ourselves and distort the market forces which we depend on.

        • +2

          This.Finally someone is talking sense.

        • You talk as though the Chinese are the only people in the world. There are other markets, you know.

          • +5

@laser: Once again, "there are other markets" is another example of over simplification of a complex issue. If it were easy, the brilliant and hard working Aussie businessmen and women would have found a new market for their goods. Ignoring a ready market consisting a fifth of the world's population is madness, hence no one did. "Make hay while the sun shines" is what we did in the last 20 yrs and it'll continue for the next 20 until other developing nations (India and Brazil) catch up.

        • Yes but China is using as a threat. Do you really want to just forfeit your moral and ethical decisions based on a country using it as threat against your own country?

Many people lost lives and lost their jobs. It is unfair to use trade as a political move to call off independent investigation.

China loves political game, typical communist and believe they have the superpowers to enforce and force it down your throats.

We have been relying too much on China and put too much in one basket. When that country has issues we got no other contingency plans.

We end up getting threats from China, whom say can kill off our economy by not buying our stuff.

They even call us "US Dogs". We do know US was silly not looking at Covid-19 seriously to being with and that's their fault, not ours. But call Aussies Dogs of US is not on!

          • @neonlight: agree. dog is just humiliating. sugarbaby is more appropriate

        • -1

TLDR; Morals mean nothing only $$.

      • +3

LMAO. So it's always been fine for you to obey your US papa, and do whatever they asked and not ask questions? Oh, maybe it's time to revenge that too.
The truth is, you are too small to boycott anything. Not China. Not US.

      • But where will the bargains for OzBargain come from?

    • +2

Oppo has not guaranteed data from their devices would not be shared with Beijing if its government demanded.

This actually might be a deal breaker for me, what sort of data are we looking at?

      • +4

bkhm are you for real? Every single phone in existence is probably a deal breaker for you then lol.

      • +4

It's made up by Trump as part of his trade war. Chinese have no care whatsoever about what crap is on your phone.
US and Australia, very much care about what is on your phone. If you have a Chinese phone, they are less likely to know what is on your phone.

  • For those who can utilize the JB port in deal, this may be a good choice, however…

Mobile carriers are putting a price on 5G access and I am almost certain that the Harvey Optus plan and the JB / GG Telstra plan does not include 5G access. So we are buying a 5G phone but don't have 5G access. YOu don't need to be a Vulcan to see how the logic is screwed up…

    • try telstra, they offers 5g when you port in your number

      • +1

I think it's just trial access, read something about that ending sometime in June. Not certain though.

    • +2

If you want 5G access then you can buy a plan that has 5G access. The logic isn't remotely "screwed up".

Not to mention, not everyone buying this cares about 5G access. When I got my first 4G phone I was still perfectly happy with 3G.

      • I was specificity refer to the port in deals from JB / GG and Harvey as you can use the credit against the phone and only lock to a 12 month contract but does not include 5G access. Having said that those deals are not design for this or any 5G phones….

        • Exactly, so how on Earth is the logic "screwed up"?

          • @callum9999: Spectral efficiency - its cheaper for the carrier to serve you your data allowance on the newer technology than it is on existing infrastructure. If people are happy to pay more for something that costs the carrier less, go for it, free up cheap and cheerful 4G for the rest of us who rather keep the money in our pockets :)

            • @BargainKen: That has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with what we're talking about!

      • -1

Just for me to get your logic right. If you don't care about 5G access, wouldn't you just buy oppo reno Z priced at $399 that's pretty much EXACTLY the same with this 5G version, apart from that 5G thing?

        • +2

different SOC…. this has Snapdragon 855 (Flagship 2019)
reno z has Mediatek helio p90 (midrange soc)

          • @echocae: Right. So for people who don't care about 5G, they care about a few milliseconds on processing speed?

            • +1

@David7: Doesn't hurt to have a bit of future proof.
Actually not just the processor, the display, camera, battery capacity, base storage are all different. These two models are nothing alike apart from the name.

              • @tidie: True. I guess the key is whether those differences are worth $200.

    • What is the port in deal?

    • +2

It's still a great deal even if it didn't have 5G capabilities. The cheapest listing I can find for the non-5G version (Oppo Reno 10x Zoom) is $900+

  • +1

Is it Hybrid Dual Sim Model?

    • +1

The Reno 5G only comes with single sim and the other slot is for Micro SD card

      • On GSMArena, It shows Hybrid Dual-Sim

        • +1

          Likely for a different variant.

I've found GSM Arena has been dropping the ball for Global and AU variants in regards to frequencies and SIM slot specs.

    • +5

      not, called up and confirmed

      • +1

        Bummer

  • +1

very good phone, i bought it when it was on deal at HN

  • +6

Best phone I've used so far, an absolute steal at that price

  • +7

A very solid phone so far, smooth performance and I love the big screen and speaker quality. Coming from One Plus 6 and S10e.

    • I was eyeing S10e for smaller size, but I would appreciate your comments comparing the two…

      • +1

S10e is a really good phone as well very comfortable to hold in the had with its size, but after using One Plus 6 I wanted to go back on the big screen. S10e has one downfall which is its short battery life 4-5 hours SOT still last a day, whereas I find myself going 1.5-2 days with the Reno. Also, there is no 4k 60FPS selfie camera on the Oppo which the s10e has.

      • This Oppo is about the biggest and heaviest around. But great device for the money, Wife got one from HN

    • Could you please give us a comparison between this phone and your S10e, especially the camera ?

      • Camera on both is superb, although you will find S10e is more saturated in colours if that's your preference in comparison to Reno's true to colour. I do find the Video stabilisation on S10e is slightly smoother than Reno, but the optical zoom x10 is really nice on Oppo. Can't go wrong with either.

        • +1

Thanks, bought one for my brother

    • Is it dual sim or single sim? Cheers.

  • +11

Waiting for the corona virus 5G comment - apparently 1 in 8 Australias believe this the the cause

    • +34

I hope it's caused by 5G. With so many Ozbargainers getting this phone we'll have herd immunity!

  • +3

Suncorp has 5% off giftcard. Bought one. Cheers OP.

  • +1

The Oppo 5g is the Reno 10x?

I dont know why oppo has different names for phones sometimes.

Looks like they are the same phone by the specs.

    Good score on Dxomark.

    https://www.dxomark.com/oppo-reno-10x-zoom-camera-review/

    • +2

The only difference between these two is 4G and 5G, they are basically the same phone

      • There's actually model simply called the Oppo Reno as well. Similar design to these but down spec'd ever so slightly.

    • Same point but supports 5g

  • i was looking for gray import the realme x2 pro at around 610. now i am about to buy this instead, not only local stock. with jb gift cards i am holding, actual cost is way cheaper than mid range.
the catch is some specs is not as good as realme, but main specs are similar expect 90 hz screen,

    • What discount price did you acquire jbhifi gift cards?

      • 20% off from long time ago ebay trick. and some GIFTED gift card. make it less than 400. at this price i have to give up 90hz display, 50W fast charge, ufs 3.0 . but this one does get sony camera compare to samsung one in realme. maybe slower software update, but android 10 should come next month.

        • colorOS7 with android 10 already available now in oz

  • unlocked?

    • Yes, can use any sim

  • +1

This phone is great in every aspect. Except doesn't have water resistance. :(
