oh, just got another brand for $15.

    • What’s that one? I’m looking :)

      • I'd guess Kmart. Which is serving me fine

  • Remember: You will only know your weight if you weigh.

    • What if someone else weighs me?

  • Anyone know if it's crippled without the Mi Fit app though?

    • +2

It works in the sense that it still tells you your weight. But for everything else you need the app.

      • +3

Thanks. Concern is data privacy, as usual when it comes to Xiaomi.
Tossing between this or a dumb scale.

        • Consider a Withings scale? Costs more but a French company with a great app.

          • @get-innocuous: Interesting, I'll look into thanks. No doubt I'm a bit less paranoid with the French than the CPC.

          • +1

@get-innocuous: If it's more than a year or two old, but less than several years old, it would be a Finnish company!

        • +9

What is the scenatio where your weight is made available that you care about?

          • +2

@Jackson: I imagine it's more to do with the spyware app that's required to use the item

          • +1

@Jackson: i am a bit sick of these comments.

its like saying its ok for companies to keep massive amounts of data about us.

Its not, especially when they don't disclose they are keeping data about us.

            Here is one - insurance.

          • -1

            @Jackson: as ezekiel2320 & IHatePeople pointed out.

For me, it's not even about MY specific data, it's about not supporting data harvesting.
It's not ok to take my data, it shouldn't be the default behaviour of "smart devices", and I don't freely greenlight it.

I'm willing to bet the app harvests more than just weight stats from your phone. If you trust Xiaomi to hold your data to good will and make your data protection their #1 priority, that's fine for you. (Yeah, surely they totally care about your rights when the CPC demands it. Just look at their Mi cameras.)
It may not happen soon but the next big hack and suddenly your name, location, appearance, contact details, financials, family, oh and your weight are out for everyone including dark web sickos to play with.

Sure, the risk may seem minuscule. But watch that Black mirror ep "Nosedive" and tell me that's not eerily the path China's heading with their social credit system. Oh and where are they getting all that data to build their mass surveillance systems?

            • @lyl-Lychee: Because Apple and Google are such great stewards of your data.

The misdirection here is that you think a foreign country having your data is bad. Your own government having your data in most scenarios is likely much, much worse.

              • -1

@Jackson: Well I don't think anyone said the silicon valley giants were particularly great either, but surely less sinister than China's companies. Pretty sure the last thing their board of directors worry about is ending up in the US Supreme court.

And I at least have a voice to legal recourse against the Australian gov't if my data is used against me. (I don't do anything illegal to hide but that's besides the point.)

                • @lyl-Lychee: Most people cant afford to go to court, and as the feds proved when raiding the News journo last year, they don't care either. Once it goes to court, they found the raid was illegal and still kept her data. If you have concerns, have concerns about the situation you are in rather than some ghost on the far horizon

                  • @Jackson: My point was at least the people responsible for careless leaking of my data are somewhat within reach.
To simplify - say I have a personal diary/passport/nude photos/etc. If someone steals it overseas, I have no hope of ever getting it back. And foreign law enforcement won't give a shit about helping me out. I have no rights. vs if someone steals it here, maybe I have a shot or at least I can try.

Plus the Australian gov't isn't even my main party of concern regarding mismanagement. I choose to use the covidsafe app you know, despite recent careless data breaches in the past.
My concerns regarding ANY parties and the increasing ease at which they're able to dig up information and compile a profile on me.

You know what doxxing is? The more and more information you dump online/remote servers, the easier a target you become. You may not see it a current issue of our time, but I'll bet our kids' generation wishes they could choose their anonymity like we were able to.

what you eat in private you wear in public

I got mine from last deal, I like it, nice, pretty, and shiny bright numbers.

Yes it works without the app.

Also works when I put my baby on it, GP told me it’s not accurate when I do that, but she weighed the baby and got similar numbers.

    • +1

How did u weigh your baby? With a basket on the scale? I was wondering how to weigh my baby at home

      • +4

Hold the baby and get on. Then weigh just yourself. Surely that's the best weigh. Pun intended :p

      • +1

(Weight of Yourself while holding baby) - (Weight yourself) = weight of the baby

      • +1

Use kitchen scales to weigh your baby for more accuracy. Only works for babies up to 5kg in size.

      • +2

Put weight on baby then step on it.. Oh wait..

      • +1

Sorry didn’t check back on post till now.
I used to (hold baby & weigh) - my weight = baby weight
Which is also what GP said it’s more accurate.

My baby is 6 months and sitting on his own, so I tried just having him sit on there. My last scale didn’t work as well like that, but this one works well.

    • +2

There is actually a built in function for this in the app https://imgur.com/a/6PSDQCc

    • +1

We use luggage scales with the pram bassinet… Luggage scales more accurate than my target scales

    • Is this one suitable for babies?

I recently got eufy c1 scale and i think it said dont use for babies and pregnant women. it passes some sort of an electric current through the body to get the readings.

      • All smart ones are probably the same

  • Would buy, but shipping… ($13)

  • +1

    "You fat. Like your brother".

  • So.. Is it good? I'm yet to find good scales.

    • +2

Works fine. All the health metrics other than weight are calculated by electrical resistance between your legs so are all pretty rough (i.e. I do a lot of cycling and have pretty strong legs so my body fat gets measured as "7.9%/very low" which is nowhere near accurate, but the methodology is consistent so you can use it to track trends at least)

      • so for someone with fat legs (but not as fat upper body), would this give a very high fat % and will be useful for tracking fat increase/decrease in legs? Unless when 1% fat is reduced in legs 1% of fat is reduced from the rest of the body. Asking for a friend…

        • +1

It will definitely allow you to track your progress, yeah. I have never verified the measurements against more accurate testing methods, just looked up the methodology and noted that the results aren't consistent with my body shape.

I was sitting on the fence but after reading your comment, decided to buy.

      • No one stopped you though!

  • Would free shipping be possible with Kogan first trial? Looked at the T&Cs but nothing about preordering.

    • +1

I think it should be OK. You still paid $34 in full for preorder. Even when the Kogan First trial expires, the payment has already been finalised and your order is waiting to be shipped.

    • +1

Should be fine. I did it with a Switch recently.

  • I've got it, it's surprisingly good.

The body fat is pretty accurate on mine, along with hydration levels. Checks out Vs medical instruments.

Don't expect absolute pinpoint accuracy though

  • +1

Does anyone know if this can connect with any 3rd party apps? eg fitbit, garmin, myfitnesspal?

    Cheers

    • +2

it connects with healthkit, so if those apps can read your weight from healthkit theoretically it should work.

  • How does it compare to Kmart's?
