  • 10 capsules for $11 seems a bit pricey. Are they worth it?

    • +1

Keen to know too, thinking about whether to purchase the capsules

  • +4

I think Pablo & Rusty's are going to become the new Campos.

Everyone used to want to find a cafe using Campos then something happened and now many people (myself included) avoid a cafe that uses Campos. Perhaps it is just (Sydney) coffee culture that once a brand is quite saturated it's time to find a new one.

    • I find myself doing the same thing.

Tastes change over time too. Maybe that also contributes to the phenomenon…

    • +1

Campos still roasting some brilliant beans. Especially their small-batch single-origin, which are normally too expensive and hard to spot in regular cafes.

My favorite small coffee place been using Campos for years and my favorite barista also worked that long once told me people cannot just buy and use Campos bean in a cafe. They need to meet certain conditions before Campos would do business with them, and one involves how well "qualified" the "main" barista was. It was HARD to get Campus as a cafe owner. Don't know how well this is still being implemented these days though.

With their standard blend, Campos beans works much better on milk-based coffee. My favorite barista could bring out the rich aroma and favors with even standard bean in a simple Latte (and always in the right temperature). The best P&R I had was a Long Black as their standard blend tends to be darker and has less aroma.

I still prefer Campos than P&R in general. However many Melbourne brands like Proud Mary are way more superior… Lucky VIC people.

      • The last time I went to Campos I found that their beans are too weak.

        • The beans are weak? (profanity) beans are weak - you're weak.
          -Alec Baldwin

    • There is/was coffe shop at Sydney Olympic Park that used and sold Pablo and Rusty beans (this going back to 2009-2010). Man I loved that coffee so much that even after I left that job I would drive dru SOP sometimes just to get a morning coffee. It was a little out of my way but worth it.

$24 for 2x 250g subscription with free delivery. Can be used up to 3 times.

So works out after discount $28kg.($48kg prior to discount)

    • Single origin isn't as cheap as the option you selected.

It also seems decaf is ineligible for this offer because it's only $22.

  • +1

This offer works well if you received the 50% discount after buying the barista express. So 50% off and another $10 off from Amex works out to be $14/kg.

    • What is that 50% off? I just bought a Batista express as well.

      • +2

He's probably referring to the bonus gift pack: https://promotions.breville.com.au/2020-bonus-giftpack

Along with free coffee, I guess there's a 50% off voucher, only a guess.

I didn't get the pack because Costco is not a participating retailer, which is fair enough because it was significantly cheaper than the majors.

        • Thanks very much mate, that makes sense.

I am still waiting for my gift pack after 2.5 weeks as they seem to have received lots of claims.

    • +1

Thanks!! If I didn't see your comment, I wouldn't have realised that I threw out my 50% off code yesterday.

Retrieved it and went ahead and ordered 2x At Home subscriptions [500g] so I'll be getting 1kg each delivery. Combine that with this Amex offer for 3 deliveries and that's $14/kg (that's the price of ALDI's Lazzio beans)!

      • +1

Hehe me too. Glad it helped! I timed my order so I'll get the third one just before the offer expires :)

  • +1

Their coffee subscription seems to be on the expensive side at minimum $24/250g? That is before going to the single origin ($36/250g) or their "super specialty" at $60/250g!

    • It's $24/500g, $36/500g. Little pricy compared to covid options.

This isn't even close to being as good as their previous offers though - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/pabloandrustys.com.au

Maybe they'll have a bargain we can stack in the time the amex offer is valid?

      • Agreed. Their past 50% off deals were great

      • Ah my bad I misread. You are correct $24-36/500g. Super specialty is still $60/250g as far as I can understand.

        • Yeah I didn't find any single origin prices better than this deal (at least with 25% off coupon). They all had delivery on top.

        • $60/250g for super specialty (I assume geisha) beans is pretty common. A good regular single origin green bean is in the order of $12-15/kg, a geisha green can cost from $50/kg to $200/kg. These are rough prices from Project Origin.

          • @mthomas87: That would make my $28/250g gesha from Dukes (when it was on special a few weeks back) a bargain!

  • Hipster name

  • +8

Code 25percent takes 25% off first 3 deliveries. Makes the single origin $17 for 500gm after AMEX.

    Seems ok value?

    • Thanks! Wonder if we can find any other coupons?

Do note that St Ali is ~$24/kg atm.

      • +3

I think you could potentially go the $24/500gm. 25% off makes it $18 a week for first 3 weeks. Keep the subscription for 4 weeks to get the 3x $10 AMEX back (should be enough time before the expiry to get the 4 weeks in), makes it $48 for 2kgs delivered over a month. That seems reasonable.

        • "spend $24 or more, in one or more transactions" means:

          • $10 credit after $18 x 2

But not too sure if the excess ($12) will rollover to future purchase? May be it will required another $18 x 2 to qualify for the next $10?

          So $72 for 4 weeks (2kg), either $20 or $30 back from Amex. $26/kg or $21/kg.

          • @browser: It definitely is a little ambiguously worded. But the Lenovo deal has same wording for one or more. So I can only assume you would get it at $36, $54 and $78?

      • That's amazing. How can I get this deal? Not seeing it on their website.

Though I did order 1kg from Industry Beans yesterday for $42 delivered (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/538679)

Also The Grounds of Alexandria's house blend is $36 for 1kg currently with free shipping: https://shop.thegrounds.com.au/collections/coffee/products/s…

    • Thanks for the code, $9 off the single origin, and because it's more than $24, received email from Amex immediately.

    • +1

      Can't get the 25% off

Says error no matching discount code found.

Do you need to be logged in?

      • I just tried, seems like it is no longer working.

      • Wasn't working when I tried it earlier, must have missed that boat :-(

  • Breville were handing these out if you bought a machine around Xmas.

Their coffee is decent, though you may prefer your own speciality roaster.

  • Can the subscription be cancelled easily?

    • Yeah, cancellation button is easily locatable when you're logged in to the website.

  • +1

    So the options are:

    • Single Origin (500g): $36/week, $27 with 25% code, $17 with Amex offer. This works out to $51/1.5kg over 3 weeks ($34/kg).
    • Non-single origin (500g): $24/week, $14 with Amex offer. This works out to $42/1.5kg over 3 weeks ($28/kg).

If spend $24 or more, in one or more transactions means amount can be accumulated, i.e. $30 for $72 total spend, then:

    • Non-single origin (500g): $24/week, $18 with 25% code, $72/2kg over 4 weeks, or $42 with Amex offer ($21/kg).
    • Decaf (500g): $22/week, $16.50 with 25% code, $49.50/1.5kg over 3 weeks, or $29.50 with Amex offer (19.67/kg). Decaf option requires 5 weeks to meet $72, which is not enough time.
    • +1

What about the business subscriptions? Porter St is $38/kg for 1kg bag which is $28.50/kg after discount code applied less $10 from Amex equates to $18.50/kg which you could cancel after 3 weeks.

      • Damn it! Did not give it too much thought simply because 1kg/week is too much.

They are definitely much better value, I can easily share the individually packed 250g bags with family and friends.

        Will get on to livechat.

        • I believe the $38/kg (before discount) is for the 1kg bags, to pack them individually you are looking at $49/kg (before discount).

There is an option at the bottom to choose this add-on.

          • @victorheaven: After further reading, the "office" subscription delivers in 1kg bags, and the 250g options are decaf add-ons. (Decaf cannot be ordered by itself).

Anyway the 25% code doesn't apply to office subscription.

      • That 25% code only works for "home" subscription.

        • Oh sorry! I added the office subscription to the checkout with the discount code and it worked for me but I didn’t proceed to enter my payment details.

    • It’s only $18 for first 3 weeks, so you will be paying $24 on the 4th week - $78 total. But this gets you the 3rd lot of $10 AMEX - Hopefully.

      • Four weeks isn't enforced. Neither is three weeks. Can cancel any time.

        • Ah, nice.

So what you’re saying is - 3 weeks on 1 account, new account for the last week. Smart.

  • How does this compare to supermarket beans? Like Vittoria and Lavazza? They are frequently go on sale, as low as $15/kg. I wonder if they are the same beans used in cafes?

    • +1

Not an expert here, but I have been reading up some past deals on coffee beans.

P&R beans are freshly roasted with a "Roasted date", and best consumed within 5 weeks. Whereas the supermarket ones are roasted probably months ago with some nitrogen to so that it doesn't go bad.

Also it seems the Aldi coffee beans ($11 or $12 a kg) are very popular here, both for quality and price. I am intending to give it a try after my P&R beans arrive from the Breville promotion.

      • Thanks, freshly roasted in small batches plus delivery does incur higher price. Hopefully I can taste it. :D

    • Lavazza aren't bad. Woolworths basic brand ($12) aren't bad. Grinders espresso is ok

Vittoria on the other hand…you're better off with Nescafe blend 43 than that gunk.

Big thumbs up for Aldi Lazzio. They taste great and the shots run better than anything so far. Hard to fault at 11.99 a pop

      • Thanks, have only tried Lavazza Oro so far, only because it was on sale between Woolies and Coles ever since I have got the machine.

By the time P&R delivers, I would have brewed and consumed 1.5kg of Lavazza Oro, will be interesting to see how different this is.

        • This is the Oro in the gold bad? I have tried Qualita Rossa (Lavazza red bag - ok) and the organic Torino (quite good)

How does that one go in the barista express?

  • I've tried all of their blends and some single origins and they aren't as good as many others that I've tried. My two favourites are Five Senses from WA and Little Marionette from Rozelle in Sydney.

Little Marionette have good subscription deals on 1kg bags at $40. Plus if you email them they will give you a free postage code. They absolutely smash Pablo and Rustys in my opinion.

  • Does this deal allow you to purchase nespresso pods seperately or you have to sign up to the subscription? (there is no pod options in their subscription?).

    • +1

      Pretty sure subscriptions only, for 2 reasons;

      • T&C says so
      • The charge that came through identified as "Pablo & Rusty's Coffee Subscriptions"

Unlikely it will say "subscription" for other purchases.

      • Thanks for that

    • There is a subscription for their pods here.
My only problem is trying to figure out if they taste good though.

  • Trailblazer is nice with milk. Decent price.

  • +2

Yesterday I got charged for my 2nd week of coffee subscriptions, however this time I didn't receive the usual email from Amex stating I would receive the $10 back. The initial subscription order worked fine and I received the email. Did anyone else have the same "problem"?

    • Same has happened to me - but the 2nd charge to my CC is still showing "pending" so I am hoping it will get the cashback come through when it moves out of the pending state.

I noticed also that the first order shows "PABLO & RUSTYS COFFEE NORTH RYDE" whereas the second order shows "PABLO RUSTY'S COFFEE SUBSCRI" in my AMEX app, but when clicking on them they both say "PABLO & RUSTY'S COFFEE SUBSCRIPTIONS"

      • +1

Yes I also noticed the descriptions were different. I did talk to an AMEX rep via a chat session and they checked and confirmed that the $10 credit should come through in a few days - they promised me …. well lets see what happens. Very strange that the email confirmation didn't come through … usually the email arrives literately within seconds of the offer being triggered.

      • +4

I think Amex might have an e-mail issue; I did my supermarket shopping today and didn't get any e-mails about earning bonus points like I usually do.

Or maybe they don't send them any more …

        • +1

Hey you're right!!! … I did a supermarket shop yesterday as well and didn't get the email … hopefully its only an email issue. Back to Pablo & Rusty I noticed this morning that the description changed now that it is no longer pending … the description now shows "PABLO & RUSTYS COFFEE NORTH RYDE"

  • +1

any idea if this stacks with shop small?

    • +1

Try it out and let us know; Shop Small only just started today …

    • +6

Stacks with shop small. Got my $10 and $5 credit in my transactions list this morning

      • Same here. I signed up few days ago to test and hopefully benefit from this :-). I thought I could get another lot next Tues 16th - for just the Pablo credit, SS credit already used. But the next time they bill is 23rd, so no luck, Pablo credit expires before that. I have yet to receive and try the coffee though.

        • +1

Could you cancel and start a new subscription? I think they bill and seems immediately out of cycle (can’t recall but you can call or check their FAQs)

  • -1

Did anyone get a confirmation email from either Amex or Pablo's after purchase?
