  • Same price at PLE as well, which may be more convenient.

Also $1,211.95 delivered at Amazon, but on pre-order.

  • Is it just these linked ones that don't come with the cooler, cause I'm sure I got one with 3900X…

    • all g, 3950x drops it cause liquid apparently recommended..

    • +2

Always good to check the listing but yes 3600, 3600X, 3700X, 3800X, 3900X should all come with some form of 'wraith' thermal solution (Fan).

This chip is recommended to have liquid cooling or a far superior cooler to what you would typically get in an oem box.

      edit: beaten by xdivino

      • Liquid lol, nah.

    • +3

It's kinda weird that it's the only consumer platform chip to be like that, but 3950Xs don't come with coolers.

      • +2

Why would anyone get a $1000 CPU and use a stock cooler?

        • +24

cause they just spent 1k on a cpu and got no money left over :D

        • To be fair, I'm pretty impressed with the wraith cooler (well, that and the thermals of these ryzen chips, I suppose). Tried it out on a 3600 I installed for the mother of a friend. Stress tested the shit out of it and it kept nice and cool and didn't thermal throttle at all. My 3950X with a liquid AIO is currently a few degrees higher while running some folding tasks.

Never had such astounding performance from such a small stock cooler before.

      • +1

IIRC, none of the intel K SKU CPUs have a boxed cooler either.

        • The Intel 10th gen, with 10 cores, is only $200 cheaper than 3950x. It performs way worse, unless you are only gaming at 1080p with a 2080ti. Considering it uses so much more power than the 3950x, you would also need to by an expensive 360 AIO to keep it cool. The 3950x doesn't need such elaborate cooling because it stays closer to it's TDP.

        • No they do not. It's just the lack of consistency that I find strange. This is the only consumer AMD chip that forgoes one, yet it has the same listed 105W TDP as the 3800X and 3900X, and they both come with a boxed cooler.

  • +8

A 39,000 point CPU passmark for this price or indeed under $10,000 is staggering.

    • +1

How much difference is there between the 3900x and 3950x in terms of performance?

      • +2

        About 20%.

      • +3

Well it's 12 cores vs 16 cores. If you are running highly threaded workloads like video rendering you could see a 20-30% boost in performance with the 3950x. For general use or gaming you probably won't see much difference.

      • +1

Very much depends on your application. For high thread optimised loads it should be just shy of the pure thread increase of 25%. For relatively lower thread loads like gaming, any gains will he due to higher achievable clocks from the possibly higher binned die, but with all other factors this will be negligible.

        • There's a thread increase of 33%

  • There is a fan cooler included with the 3900x and 3950x from PLE. Bought one 2 weeks ago… oops.

    • That's awesome if you got one but 3950X specs on PLE page at least today, say no heatsink or fan in the box.

    • Why would anyone get a $1000 CPU and use a stock cooler?

      • Why would anyone get a $1000 CPU and use a stock cooler?

^this, why waste time and money putting a stock cooler in that literally no one would use. You would need a premium solution added and at that point it is better just to let the purchaser choose whatever aftermarket cooler they want.

        • I was actually checking out reviews and there is very little if none between this and Noctua cooler. I am using the stock one and got the Noctua sitting and collecting dust.

          • @nadan: Noise?

No air coolers beat Noctua, my DRP4 gets close.

            • @scuderiarmani: There are videos on youtube as well. I am not sure what you mean by noise?
If you mean the noise level of the stock cooler, then it is noisier than Noctua.

              • +1

@nadan: Well you said there's little difference…. the stock AMD coolers aren't great for noise, Noctua and BeQuiet are.

As for cooling, they won't touch those either…. even more so with such a high end CPU.

No way anyone should run a stock cooler on the high end stuff, with and without overclocking.

                • @scuderiarmani: The little noise difference falls within the little difference I mentioned. If it isn't overheating then what is the point? And if it was ineffective AMD would not include it in the box.

                  • @nadan: where did you get one that came with a cooler? even AMD list this part as having no cooler and recommended to use liquid cooling?

                    https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-9-3950x
                    Thermal Solution (PIB)
Cooler Not Included, Liquid Cooling Recommended

                  • +1

@nadan: You really need to watch and read more reviews if you believe a stock AMD cooler is anywhere near a good Noctua.

                  • @nadan: "And if it was ineffective AMD would not include it in the box."

You should explain that to Intel

          • +1

            @nadan: Proof? Source?

Just blowing hot air out of your arse maybe?

      • I paid too much for my 2700X and am happy with the stock cooler. i know the X means I can overclock and make it hotter but i don't wanna.

        • generally, X means it can use PBO, Precision Boost and Precision Boost Overdrive (3000 series gets PB2). I don't think it's a default, but it sometimes can be in the BIOS.

if you check and update your mainboard BIOS, it's usually a setting under AMD CBS and XPR that you enable, and it will auto adjust speeds using PB and PBO. From what I remember, it really depends, but it's easier to have a manual overclock without really tuning things, and it should work fine. YMMV. 4GHz was a 10 second choice made and forgotten about until I did a BIOS update that had to factory reset the BIOS

Ryzen Master can also flip the PBO setting, it really depends on your hardware and BIOS config. The thing about PBO is that you can get a relaxed overclock setting with XMP settings and default OC settings to get 4ghz manually, or automatically with PBO.

The end result is that you can overclock the 2700x in about 2 minutes and get a reliable and stable system with PBO, or a manual overclock.

    • weird, my 3950x definitely had no cooler in the box.

    • Did you buy the 3900x or 3950x?

      3900x yes, but I thought 3950x didn't

    • +11

I too enjoy making generalised statements with little to no knowledge.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmxkpTtwx1k

        • +5

Sure did and it clearly shows Ryzen IPC to be higher. If you’d like to argue that higher memory read-write latency puts Ryzen at a few percent disadvantage to Intel in gaming despite higher IPC, that would be valid, but that’s not what you said. Hence why I said you’re making generalisations with no knowledge.

        • Mate just admit you lost the argument

    • -1

IPC in zen2 is more then intel.. but intel is clocked higher so in games its still winning. Bu 2 to 5% losing in everything else by 35%

  • This makes my 3900X look a bit shit now…

    • +5

considering bang for the buck you are still the winner.

      • +7

True. Although I'd say those with a 3600 are the real winners!

    • +1

I managed to get my 3900x from the FTC sale for $598, would rather pay half price for 3/4 the product :)

      • +1

you must have been one of the lucky one's, they failed to send the order for so many

    • Yea but I managed to snag my 3900X at just below $700. This is 50% more expensive, but the performance boost is only 20% for the 3950X - so it's not a bad take.

  • +4

Thanks OP. Ordered one for my HTPC box for streaming youtube.

      • +3

It's a niche product. Lots of niche products get big upvotes and hit the frontpage.

        shrug.

      • +7

Plenty I'm sure, not everyone's PC is for porn and gaming. For content creators this is a great deal.

        • +1

that's right. just like me is specifically for porn, i mean gaming.

          • +1

@slowmo: Personally I need a beast rig to keep the 1000+ Chrome tabs I have running every time I sit down for a bit of self pleasure.

      • I did.

      • +3

I don't understand your point. People post Alienware and Mac deals that are 3k plus for average internal hardware. At least this CPU delivers great bang for buck in productivity workloads. Remember the days, a couple of years ago, when Intel used to charge an arm and a leg for a 16 core before there was competition. This CPU betters the Intel 18 core in certain workloads at a much better price.

      • +2

You need to think beyond your own circumstances.

Many people use PCs for work and become very interested in high end solutions and productivity gains, particularly at the end of the financial year thanks to tax deductibility. This deal will be of great appeal to a reasonable number of people.

  • +4

Good for my minecraft gaming pc.

    • +2

lol, dont even joke. Minecraft can crush pc's when draw distance and settings are maxed out XD

      • yeah imagine having 1000 mobs walking around ://

  • +3

it's either this or raspberry pi 4…. decisions decisions

    • +1
    • -6

      They are a complete opposite.

      • -1

You must be fun at parties

        • -4

you get the pi for basic tasks, you get the ryzen for more heavy tasks. SO yeh, they are a complete opposite.

    • At least the iphone users don't crash these threads. We should probably stop crashing theirs, I suppose.

  • Cryorig R1 HSF deals with this CPU, no dramas.

  • -1

seem like the same discount as buying it full price and doing a TRS. i guess i can wait for ma travel later this year

    • if you get caught with it coming back in you would need to pay import on it.

      • -1

        ^ is your name Karen?

        • +1

no, just pointing out a CPU is high risk of being noticed by customs unlike a camera/phone/jewelry which you can sneak in under the likelihood you already owned it on the way out.

  • Hooley dooley a grand for a cpu.

    • +2

If Intel still had their way they would be charging this amount for a 8 core CPU.

    • Been under a rock for how many years?

      Best you don't price a 2080ti then….

AMD (and Intel/Nvidia) have many products in their range, always have, always will.

  • Not related to the actual deal. However my machine with this cpu refuses to sleep. I have changed the power plans, but haven't found why it is not sleeping.

    • You might have global c state disabled.

    • Also check if you have any USB devices connected ( like game controllers ) some of them prevent the system from going to sleep

    • +5

It’s actually a feature not a bug. To make large gains on Intel you’ll never catch AMD sleeping.

    • It might be related to the power saving features in the BIOS. I'd check there.

  • +2

REALLY tempted! But I think I will hold out for Ryzen 4000 with the 13 - 20% IPC gains.

    • +1

This, would be silly to purchase now.

      • +1

Yeah I'm happy with my 3900X now and it will tie me over until the 4900X / 4950X is released.

      • When is the Ryzen 4000 due to come out?

        • +1

Previously rumoured to be around September-October but last week rumours emerged of a small refresh for some of the chips (3600X, 3800X, 3900X) and the speculation is that this is because the 4000 series may be pushed back until late Q4.

In essence until AMD announce it or we start getting some really good leaks/sources know one will know for sure.

          • @Osiris: Or Intel's release didn't scare them enough to need to rush a release… Lol hunch is due to all the covid stuff if they released in sep/Oct it may have ended up as a paper launch ala Intel… Now that they saw Intel's hand maybe they push back release and actually have some stock behind it… But Yeh all speculation at this stage

  • +1

AMD are apparently refreshing the Zen2 lineup by adding a little extra boost with 3900XT, 3800XT and 3600XT, so prices for the X variants should drop a little also. I believe you can get the 3900X on amazon for around $715.

  • +3

Lol its $1199, just give delivery for free

  • For a moment, I was so excite as I've thought it was for the 3960x.

    • It's crazy how an extra 10 in the model number actually means a 40% increase in performance.

  • Now to choose a motherboard, any suggestions?

    • Any of the mid tier X570s will be fine. Cross-hair VIII, X570 Master, Asrock X570 Taichi.

      • I need thunderbolt3 so that narrowed the field :)

  • +1

I'm curious. So many upvotes and comments. Did anyone actually buy this 3950x? Not hating on the op, just curious who and why would anyone buy this. Going from 3900x to this doesnt make sense unless you have some virtualization needs etc.

    • +1

And buying so close to a refresh and or new model….

Cue the same people upset very soon.

      • +1

yeah there are strong rumors for an XT version now.
