    No 1080p

    • +2

Not like FTA TV even airs 1080p content.

      • +2

PVRs usually include media centres…while this one is cheap enough just for a PVR without the media centre capibility, i think no 1080P is valid. not like he negged it.

    • +1

Also if the TV you're playing it on is 1080p capable, I would assume it's already got a digital tuner anyways?!

      • Not if you want to use it on a monitor!

  • +3

I think this will almost certainly be only a single tuner model. The claim about record one program and watch another at the same time is somewhat deceptive. You can expect that the show that you watch will have to be from the same channel group as the one you are recording (eg Channel 7 and 7 mate).

Assuming I am right, that's a bit naughty of them to advertise this way. They certainly aren't the only ones to do it though.

    • me too, I don't think a twin tuner STB will be that cheap.

    • +2

In my experience that means you can record something and watch a pre-recorded show only, not another actual channel regardless of grouping.

      • I know a family member who has the same experience as what JDR described. She'll be watching one station, then when the recording kicks in, she can still watch tv but is limited to stations in the same channel groups as being recorded.

(eg ABC group, SBS group, 10 and live, 9 and gem, …)

        • Oh ok, I honestly didn't think that was possible without dual tuners given that tuner would have to pull in more than one frequency/signal.
Do you know what STB it was? I'd be interested in checking it out.

  • -1

No mention of a remote control either but I'd assume it would have one.

  • I think the brand is laser or something crappy like that

  • +1

Does anyone want to guess the brand??

DGTEC? Possibly the DG-HD1609, which retails for about $50: http://www.dgtec.com.au/en-AU/products/set-top-boxes/DG-HD16…

Most of the features listed on COTD matches DGTEC word-for-word.

    • I'll second that guess.

      • +4

New discount code confirms the brand ;)

  • Better option is buy a sony playtv for $50 at myer (50% off offer end tomorrow) if you have ps3 console.sony blu-ray remote also reduced to $20.

    • +2

$50 + $20 is $70 which is double the price of this deal though.

      • +4

also add the $300 you need for a ps3!

  • Definitely is not the STRONG HD Set Top Box referred to as last best deal. I have the STRONG HD Set Top Box. The vents are different too.

Noooo! Why after I had already ordered?

    • Thanks QQQ - listing updated

    • Guess we know the brand now

    • At what point / where do I put the coupon code?
It's still showing up without the discount.
Edit: Forget it. I found out when continuing with checkout.

    • Ahh! Now I'm getting "you do not have permission to access checkout payment php on this server.
As I don't know how to resolve this permission error, I can't buy it.

    • So how can you find this product on the website without using the direct link above? Is it listed there, or just for ozbargain?

  • Does it support usb storage in NTFS format?

  • What are the dimensions of this? I've been meaning to buy a cheap media player (with usb compatibility).

  • +1

Awesome thanks for the code. $29.90 for hd set top box with pvr aint bad at all. To think I was happy to buy this at $37.90, just seems too expensive now.

  • Sweet! Thanks for this, just snapped one up. Was looking for a new stb as our current 'DGTEC' is starting to play up. No hesitations buying DGTEC again though, this one's 3 years old, ran about 18 hours a day and was the cheapest thing I could find when purchased. Bargain ;)

  • Thanks for code. :)

  • Thanks, just bought one. :)

  • Bought one prior to seeing the code, didn't even look on OzBargain.
    Also, didn't notice that there's no 1080p.

The picture of the unit looks just like this model:

    DG-HD2104AND
    http://www.dgtec.com.au/products/set-top-boxes/DG-HD2104AND

The DG-HD1609 has a horizontal usb port, whereas the HD2140AND has the vertical usb port. Plus the COTD has the display reading as "5000".

Could it be this Android one? Somehow i doubt it, i reckon they've put up the photo of the 2104, altered the look of it slightly, putting a grey bar where the usb port is, maybe even putting that grey bar on the left hand side along the bottom.
Then people think they're buying the 2104 cause that's what it looks like. But they don't state the brand or model number so there's no responsibility for COTD to provide what's pictured.

    • Never seen a digital free to air transmission in 1080p yet, most are i

    • Does this have component video out?
    • For recording is it just Record one channel and playback a recording at the same time or Record one channel and watch another programme on a different channel at the same time?
    • For usb devices, does it support HTFS or only Fat32?

1080p may me for media playback and video output on the set top box. Not actual tv reception that is max 1080i

    • Yes, it has component video out according to the specs:
      •Component, S-video & Composite Video Output

  • dumb question, but is this the device i need to record free-to-air tv shows, like the USA grand prix at 2am, and i cant stay up, so i can watch it the next day? Does this require the TV to still be on? and can u fast forward commericals when playing back?

    • +1

Yeah you can set these up to record like the timer on an oldschool VCR. TV doesn't need to be on and you'll be able to FF through the ads. :)

  • Not bad for $30, not bad at all.
Can't seem to find out if it has the capability for an internal HDD though. Don't want to use USB.

  • No mention of a hard drive so not a PVR, just a set top box with PVR capability (presumably with external USB drive?).

    • Yeah that's what I was thinking but I have seen them sold with the capability to install your own HDD. Guess I can't go wrong for $30.

  • Does anyone know if this has component video in ?

I'd like to plug in my old satellite receiver device (which picks up shows overseas) into this PVR, so that I can record shows off the satellite through the PVR …

    • You'd be very lucky to find something like that here. I had a DVD recorder years ago with component in and have never seen anything with it since.

  • anyone know if it can playback avi video format from a USB?

    • Yes it can.

  • +3

"We’ve had to keep the brand secret as we are selling it so cheap!"

    Thats crap.
I like to do a bit of google research before buying.
It must be an superceded model or something.
It doesn't look exactly the same as any of the DGTEC models mentioned above, on the DGTEC website.
$30 is a great price, but maybe not if it doesn't record reliably or is a PITA to use.

    • Crap it is. It sounds like they are trying to hide something about the exact identity of this STB. $30 is a small gamble for such a capable STB but it still would be nice to have open information about it.

      • +1

and I got a PVR for $9 delivered!!!! :P KOGAN!!!!

    • I agree 100%. Keeping the brand a secret even sounds stupid, like some scam artist technique.

Having said that though, I spent $30 on it!

Yes trolls, 15 minutes of my wages.

  • +1

COTD? No thanks. Bunch of scumbags. Will never trust them after their previous "sales" and especially after their wonderful mystery item, the anti virus cd.

    • lol, a virus CD, or a CD full of viruses would have been better than that!
      'wonderful' it definitely was not!

  • So I can connect this to my monitor to make it a TV?

    • +3

Yes, if ur monitor is HDMI, then all good.
      or
if DVI, then need to buy DVI-> HDMI converter ( but no sound in this case)
If no speakers in monitor, then u need to attach them to ur monitor or set top box.
Only problem is you have to switch off the monitor manually from power button. Rest looks ok.

  • Bought one, have sound skipping issues with old DGTEC HD box , but with $30 wt? !
Tried to put the $5 i-pad one for my HP Touchpad together with the oreder, it came up at $11 extra for delivery! So I have to give it a miss!

  • bought one, hope it has all the codecs.. my old box doesnt play xvid or real format. Hope firmware is upgradeable on this thing.. updating codecs ability is the main thing for me..

    • +1

Don't think it will, ever, mostly just avi & mpeg, or MP4 max!

      • +1

Just got it today, surprised me, it actually able to play mkv file, but not rmvb!

  • -3

    Bah! Missed it.

I don't watch much tv, but at the moment can only get 3 of the old free channels, so I really should buy something like this.

What cheapish pvr / set-top boxes are worth looking at?

  • Mine got shipped today. Hope everyone else's does too!

  • It's back!!

COTD have it again for the same price, in today's Technothon. Coupon for free shipping still works!

    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

  • I don't think I can resist the temptation any more.
I will have to get one, as much out of curiosity about whether it works reliably.
Just wondering, has anyone got one recording using a USB stick yet ? (as opposed to using an external, self powered hard drive)

  • Received mine this morning. DGTec Model DG-HD2609
Great unit, good reception, clear picture. Will only record onto FAT/Fat32 USB will not record to NTFS.

By the way the above (top of page) discount code still applies.

    • -2

Just wondering are you sure that isn't DG-HD1609 (not HD2609) ?
Its just I get no google results at all for DGTEC HD2609
and nothing on DGTEC website either.

      • +1

Unless I am f#%$ing blind and misread the front of the unit, the rear of the unit, the box it came in, the front of the quick start guide AND the front of the manual, no it IS DG-HD2609. And you are right, I couldn't find it via google or on DGTEC either. Go figure, I can't explain it.

        • OK, thanks.
Anyway I went to buy one half an hour ago, and it was already gone - bummer.
I thought those specials lasted for the day.
edit: must be from midday to midday.

        • I received mine this morning too and was expecting to the model to be HD1609 but the box clearly says HD2609. This model is not even listed on DGTec when I did a search on their website nor google search engine. How odd!!.

  • +1

Can't record to NTFS, that sucks.
Maybe COTD got digitec to make this budget unit for them custom. That's why it's a new model number.

  • +3

not happy, description said it has component out but the one received only has RCA/ AV my TV doesn't have HDMI and need component output to watch in HD. Anyway, I can confirm it can record and watch different channel at the same time but must in same group ie you can record 9 and watch either 90 or 99.

  • +1

Tried to play a recorded program and it does play but I can't get it to do full screen. Can anyone please help?

    Just worked it out. cheers.

  • +2

    HD-2609 arrived today.

    Wish it was the HD-1609.

Despite the COTD description the HD-2609 DOES NOT HAVE

    •Optical Digital Audio Output
    •Component Output
    •S-video Output

    ????????????????????????????????????????????

  • +2

Holy crap, what a bunch of scammers. Everyone who bought it is legally entitled to a full refund (not sure about postage) due to false advertising.

Not sure if i'll return mine.

  • +1

I emailed COTD advising the supplied PVR was not as described and missing advertised features.

    This was the reply today.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your email.

I'm very sorry, unfortunately we do not have any further information on the PVR's that we have sold in the past other than what is listed in their respective listings.

I'm afraid that we do not have any samples in our offices to check this for you sorry.

I apologise that I couldn't be of much help.

    Kind regards,

    • +2

      LOL!

I assume you're satisfied with that response, vmile? :D

What type of support email is that, that's so pathetic.

"Um, you sold me a false product"
"Oh, sorry, can't help you with that query, goodbye"

  • +3

Pretty outrageous the description advertising a product could be so incorrect.
They probably didn't do it intentionally, just incompetence ?

  • +1

This is the second time I've bought from COTD and they have either lied in the descriptions or got it wrong. They waste my damn time!
I purchased this item because the description said it has Component outputs, which is something I need, as my older HD TV does not have HDMI. I received the set top box today, and it has NO Component outputs.
COTD - if you are not going to tell us what the model is, then at least get the damn feature description right!

  • +1

Picked 1 up from post office today, found out it has 2 great features which the other expensive one do not have :
    1. can play mkv (but not rmvb)
    2. Have a power switch at the back!
    Nice one!

  • Mine won't always tune the station and I have to go to another station and back again to tune. Signal says 100%. Anyone else?
