If you're getting it, see here for a 1 month trial (Telstra post paid customers only)
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/537686

Something else to note: only 1 trial per box. I tried many things, even factory reset, but I couldn't get another trial to work.

  • Free-to-Air channels this box (Requires the cable to Foxtel dish)
vodafone (can it stream on internet? or do they need a cable connected?

    • FTA channels accessed with standard aerial input.

    • +1

      For Vodafone box
FTA is over an antenna connection.
But all the FTA apps have live TV as well, so no need of antenna, just stream from apps.
That’s how we have the outdoor TV setup, all wifi no antenna.

  • Does this have a Disney Plus app? Or does the Vodafone box?

    • Chromecast built-in - my experience with the Disney app on Android TV is the same as with a sideloaded Prime Video app: only stereo sound. Dolby Digital Plus requires casting (which works very well).

    • Vodafone TV had Disney plus app

  • Can a coaxial cable plugged into a wall socket to a tv antenna on the roof work with this for free to air tv?
Trying to find a way to get free to air to projector since projector doesn't have coaxial input.

    • Yep you can, i watch free to air TV on it and it works great.
I have a cheapie $10 indoor antenna and it works perfectly with the box

      • Care to share where you found this antenna? I need it in my bedroom.

        • +2

Yeah its this one. Cheaper than i thought haha

      • And you don't need to be subscribed to Foxtel for it to work?
        Thanks Shapers.

        • Nope. You just need to login with a Foxtel account at the initial box setup (do a free 10 day trial and cancel). After the free trial has run out all foxtel channels will be restricted (except sky news), free to air channels will remain unrestricted :)

          • +1

            @shapers: Okay thanks mate.
            Appreciate the help!

  • Is the content on FoxtelNow in HD?

    • Yes

  • Having owned one for 2 weeks was having problems with Dolby 5.1 using Disney app. Sound would cut out for a split second every so often. Not sure if it's app related or Android OS or receiver but stereo works fine. Other than that it's a good stand alone android box and built in tv tuner is great, Bluetooth remote is quite convenient.

    • I've had this problem with a Mibox 3 as well. Must be an OS problem, or a certain part present in both boxes.

  • +2

I bought this for my mother and one for the kids dumb tv and it works fine. They have all the streaming apps except Amazon and it just works. Only had one non issue with my mother's but that was operator error - she pushed Netflix on the tv remote not the Foxtel remote.
I wanted a box that I didn't have to sideload, didn't have to sit for hours training them how to use it and if it has an issue they just reboot, no logging back in.
For basic use and $49, great. For an advanced user probably looking at the wrong one.

    • +1

"she pushed Netflix on the tv remote not the Foxtel remote."

I bet you spent two hours on the phone with her to come to that conclusion?

  • nice one. good thing about this box is you can plug your tv antenna cable in and browse between free to air tv and foxtel from the one remote…. for $49 good deal, also at my parents place. but main benefit having every android and nas box was ability to browse and flick from free to air channels and foxtel now streams so if u have afl on foxtel now and free to air its all one big click on one remote if that makes sense. but tbh i have the new android shield and i am still to find one i love like my synology nas but the missus luvs all the streams…. end up spending all the time browsing between netflix stan foxtelnow prime youtube and so on… and then switching to free to air tv channels and nas network for torrents. if only android tv allowed more customisation of the default start screen rather than just the basic recommendations from each streaming/content provider.

  • Does this replace my Foxtel IQ Box?

    • It can be you'd be chaning to a Foxtel Now subscription.

  • +1

Decent hardware but crappy software. I keep having to login regularly because it just randomly disconnects. Anyone else have this issue? I had to make my password as quick as possible to enter.

    • fwiw i found when i was on my old telstra adsl2+ connection it had issues like that but once it had NBN it was pretty solid….. i'd luv more ram in all these boxes tho

  • A bit off topic. I've got a first gen Chromecast, and mostly watching Netflix /SBS on demand. Watching tv through Xbox (although the EPG has been failing for a few months now) Is there any reason for me to buy a Vodafone TV or Foxtel tv box?

    • +1

depends if you want free to air tv in same experience… r u casting from your phone or lappy etc ?

      • Thanks, actually having free to air tv/EPG and Netflix/SBS from the same box could be interesting, since I don't play much on the Xbox anymore.
How's the EPG experience in the Vodafone TV?

    • Kinda in the same boat. I don't really watch TV, but I would like the occasional Got talent or lego masters shows. Is there a way to stream it through internet instead of getting an aerial installed? Not really fan of installing Foxtel just for free TV.

      • u can get an old telstra tv box which i have in alot of rooms with 2 or 3 monitors where u just plug in hdmi and have all the catchup apps from all the aussie tv channels nearly all now have a livestream option so u dont need the antenna. so like people r saying the vodafone tv or xiaomi one or telstra tv which is a roku box and ive found super stable…. for that its just what is cheapest at a point of time….

      • Yep - you can use the Kodi fork WBMC with the Freeview add-on here:

        https://www.matthuisman.nz/2017/08/au-freeview-kodi-add-on.h…

Can also use IPTV Merge if you want an EPG:

        https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/02/iptv-merge-kodi-add-on.ht…

If you want to simplify your setup buy this or Vodafone tv so you don't have to keep switching between your xbox and phone. This comes with built in Chromecast so you can still use your phone. But for me I would wait for the new chromecast sabrina which comes with android tv and remote but in a small dongle size.

  • how do i stream live asian tv on this?

    • +1

If you are willing to pay $ and genuinely subscribe, then the Fetch TV box has lots of Asian channels.

    • Buy another box and glue it to this one :)

  • What are the differences between the "Foxtel Now" and "Telstra TV" boxes. I was looking to order the Telstra TV box that retails for $200+ but just saw this. Do both boxes run the same apps?

    • +2

Telstra TV is a little more polished in my opinion, Telstra TV is based on the Roku system from the US.

While the Foxtel Now/Vodafone TV is based on AndroidTV and more open. Apps vary but in general you can get more with an Android based system, for example Disney+ is not on Telstra TV.

  • Between this and Vodafone TV can any of them have the Chrome Browser app so they can run the foxtel go through it like it does on a PC?

    • You can download a browser app from Google Play app store but why would you do that? Use the Foxtel Now app, it's gonna be a much better experience.

      • But wouldnt I need a separate Foxtel Now account on top of the existing Foxtel service where I get Go included?

        • I log into my Foxtel Now box with a regular Foxtel login and have access to all the same channels that account has without an additional app.

I originally had a foxtel now trial account. Not sure if that part is required first. But my ex gave me her Foxtel info so I use that and have been watching sport through it with no need for Kayo.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Turned out to be ~$30 with a Citibank evoucher.

    • Did the same thing as well, was annoyed by the $11.99 delivery though. But I couldn't resist, even at $42.

      • +3

I signed up to a Kogan Free delivery trial. Added a $5 sim card. Around $34 delivered.

Edit: Not sure if free delivery is applicable to all postcodes.

  • similar price i paid for vodafone tv boxes with no limitations

  • Is it just me, or is Kodi blocked on this device? Can select on store, will download, but fails to install. Or am I doing something wrong? Cheers.

    • +2

Yeah it's blocked, although you can use the Kodi fork WBMC.

  • Thanks OP, I combined this with the $20 off and got it for $29. Had to get a Kogan First trial for free delivery, which I no doubt will forget to cancel.

Getting rid of their stock before Foxtel closes up shop.

give money to Rupert the murderer or just give it away to some poor bugger on the street - no brainer.

  • Can someone please help me out?

    This or Vodafone TV?

All it will be used for is watching the footy on Kayo.

Setting it up for an elderly family member (who finally left foxtel)
Anything else I need to know - do you need a google account to download Kayo app or anything?
    Cheers

    • My parents have the Foxtel Now Box. You can download Kayo without an issue. You will need a Google account for the Foxtel Now Box, I just signed in with my account. I imagine Vodafone TV is much the same, I just can’t be sure as I don’t have one.

    • +1

Kayo you have to side load onto the Vodafone TV box. Check whirlpool.net.au and search for Kayo Android TV apk.
With the Foxtel now box you don’t have side load, it’s it appears in the google play store.

For a elderly family member I’d recommend downloading button mapper and mapping Kayo to a unused button for them. Nice and easy.

  • i believe this will be better if they are only watching Kayo

    • Possibly not. It would be better if you watch sport via Foxtel Now subscription but that’s $29 while Kayo Basic is $25. Foxtel Now Box loads Foxtel Now app every time. I imagine Vodafone TV doesn’t load any apps on startup but just takes you to the Android TV home screen.

Everyone should be aware that Kogan automatically saves your credit card details when purchasing and at least two OzBargainers have had their accounts hacked..

I’d recommend removing the saved credit card after purchase and ensuring you’re using a unique password for Kogan.

    • Wow thanks for that advice… didn’t know that I’m not too keen on buying anything from Kogan personally.

This is what the Boxee Box should have been

    https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/foxtel-now-box

  • Just received this. Is it just me or the Foxtel site is unresponsive/down? I am trying to set up an account with the 10 days free trial.

  • Received mine. Live TV looks good but I can't pauze it. I thought it was able to pause for 30 minutes?

    • Only works with Foxtel Now streaming content, not FTA.

  • How does this compared to Fetch Mini Box?
