$2 per portion, albeit small sized portions. The parking fees at the airport will probably outweigh the meal saving. Unless Melbourne airport parking is still free. I recall a couple months ago, airport parking was free.

    • +4

Parking is not needed. Have you ever seen a catering building located at the passenger terminals???

  • if this is air asia meal will definately order sets.

  • In the reception area, they list companies they’re supplying to and Air Asia is not there. Interestingly Qantas and RailCorp is there so there is a possibility these are not economy airline meals we understand it to be. We assumed it's economy because of the tray situation but they never said these meant to be used by airlines. The packaging also seems to be for microwave use not ovens as we normally see on planes (aluminium with lid). I don't suddenly expect them to be gourmet meals but thought I share my observations.

I also found this back story about the operation if anyone is interested: https://australianaviation.com.au/2019/01/fast-fresh-and-fly…

    • Qantas does not use GateGourmet. They used to use their own catering 'Q Catering' which then got sold to DNATA Catering which they now use.
They may supply Jetstar though, not sure.

      • Yes that's what I thought too. QC was sold to DNATA in 2018 but the article above from 2019 stated "The Sydney and Cairns flight kitchens were bought from Qantas’s catering arm Q Catering in 2012.". I'm only reporting what I saw at GG Sydney. If it's a false/misleading claim they should address it accordingly. Perhaps they're still supplying Qantas outside of in-flight meals, I don't know. Doesn't really matter in the context of this deal. Maybe someone can ask when they collect their order at GG Sydney?

        • The kitchens, not the company. Doesn't mean Qantas still uses them.

          • @[Deactivated]: Qantas have a 10yr agreement with DNATA, so they don't use Gate Gourmet at all locally.

Picked up mine today. Packaging indicates its for Virgin Australia. In my opinion the lunch/dinners are much better than a woolies/coles small frozen meal by far, the chicken mango curry 220g? I just had was pretty tasty with proper chunks of chicken. I also got veg lasagna 255g, thai yellow curry 295g? and beef bourguignon 220g?. Meals are small though - I'm not fussed as on a diet but some might need 2 or 3 meals.
Breakfast is similar in size… except fot the french toast mixberry 125g. Not even one slice! The other options I got were scramblesd eggs and ratatouille 270g and tomato and mushroom fritata 185g.

Some packs have weights. Where I've got '?' No weight so I've just weighed it and roughly subtracted the weight of the pack. Hope this helps.

  • picked mine up today, they had the menu at the reception. But i have no idea how to upload the menu pictures.
for that price, super worth it.

  • +1

Can I order free cup noodle?

  • 20 packs just fit in 1 woolies cold bag

    • Took me 30 minutes to drive home and it was still solid as a rock. I just left them in the plastic bag they provided.

      • I took them home by bus. No problems.

  • Brisbane: Plenty of staff in their car park @1 today. But no customers. I walked in from bus.
Then staff directed cars to park, staff took details & delivered orders👍

    • +2

Just picked up. Unfortunately they gave me 5 beef bourguignon and 5 potato & ricotta gnocchi. I was hoping for more variety. Picking up another order next week, fingers crossed.

Also, I realised they were made in Mascot, NSW. I honestly thought they were made in the facility locally. Just an observation.

      • Got the same (lack of) choices in main meals. But OK by me.
        Use by dates:
        beef bourguignon 260g (9/8)
        potato & ricotta gnocchi 273g (30/7)

        Breakfasts were 5 each of
        Egg White Omelette 210g (16/7)
        Mushroom, Spinach & Cheese Fritter 165g (10/7).
Better than the toast others got!

      • Don't know where this was manufactured - it says made by GG Mascot, but that is the business name, not necessarily where it was made!

And no indication who it was made for!

I think the trucks outside had just delivered them. The drivers were hanging around when I arrived.

        • +1

Based on the cover of the packaging, it's definitely for virgin Australia. Only VA uses covers like that.

          • @j0hnd0e: Ah, confirmed when I ate the last of the sauce - it's on the black tray!

I don't buy airline food on airlines - bring my own😉

            • @INFIDEL: They're free on flights to NZ/international 😂 looks exactly the same packaging as when I flew to NZ. I have another order to pick up next week, hopefully they've got more choices. People in MEL and SYD are so lucky, they got so much more choices

              • @j0hnd0e: A few Jetstar flights home from Japan have given me free meals & breakfasts😉
Had booked Air Asia flights (now cancelled) & paid for Nasi Lemak.

            • @INFIDEL: and you eat airlines food at home!!

              • @a1234my: So much cheaper than on board, and quite tasty! A bargain! So why not?

      • +2

Just ate the potato & ricotta gnocchi (4.5min in microwave) - yum. But don't leave it to get cold - goes hard!
Went down nice with an ice cold Japan brewed Asahi🍺

        • I had both the beef bourguignon and gnocchi. They were delicious! The gnocchi was way more filling than I expected, the beef not so. Eating both together is enough for a full meal. I put them in the oven for 20 minutes.

          • +1

@j0hnd0e: The gnocchi & a beer was filling enough for me. Tonight I try the beef bourguignon.

          • @j0hnd0e: Ate the beef bourguignon - mainly mash, not bad, but preferred the vegetarian gnocchi with its tasty sauce.

            Breakfasts:
The vegetarian omelette was pretty bland. Added some caramelised onion relish.

The Mushroom, Spinach & Cheese Fritter was small but very tasty.

If only we knew if there are to be different meals next week - would order again.

    • Picked mine up from Brisbane, a few cars coming in, great set up for pickup! I ordered 2 of the lunch/dinner packs but seems like I've scored extras in mine of some of the breakfasts. Agree on the not much variety on the meat front, but the two big Woolies bags of food will do nicely for small working from home lunches!

  • +1

Just collected from Melbourne. Was almost an hours drive home. Meals stayed nice and cold in those $2.50 chiller bags you can buy from coles. I ordered 2 x breakfast and 2 x main meals separately, not the combo.

Breakfast meals: Mushroom, Spinach & Cheese Fritter 165g, Egg White Omlette 210g, Banana Bread & Apple Compote 180g

Main meals: Potato & Ricotta Gnocchi 273g, Beef Massaman & Jasmine Rice 270g, Chicken Mango Curry, 261g, Chicken & Mushroom stew 250g, Beef Rendang & Jasmine Rice 261g, Beef Bourguignon 260g, Chicken Parmigiana 290g

    Good value, thanks OP.

    • how come you didn't buy the combo?

      • +1

When you choose individually you get the choice of vegetarian and non vegetarian (implied). The combo does not give you this option, so I wanted to see if I'd get more non vegetarian meals this way, which I did.

        • I choose non vegetarian, received Potato & Ricotta Gnocchi * 5

        • makes sense

        • noticed that to so at checkout screen I just left a note to seller to request only non-vegetarian meals when buying the combo… will be picking up next thursday, so I'll let you know if it worked

  • so sad, only 2 choices in my meals
    Potato & Ricotta Gnocchi * 5
    Beef Bourguignon * 5

    • +3

Same here, seems like everyone in Brisbane only had these 2.

      • I want to try other 4 choices.
I did not select 'Veg' options

  • +3

Just picked up from Perth. I got a bit confused as it wasn't the address listed in the email, instead it was a unit a couple of doors down (I should have realised by the number of people there!).

3 other people were picking up at the same time I was - I'm guessing they had a lot of orders.

I ordered 2 X vegetarian 10 packs. I have no idea what the meals actually are, as they don't have labels unlike the pics others have posted. I'm set for a few mystery lunches!

The team confirmed the purple coloured packs are vegetarian, so those picking up mixed combos should be able to see at a glance how many meat vs veg meals they have.

    • Same here in Perth haha, nice folks working there and seems pretty good for what was paid, can't go wrong. Mine didn't have labels at all either, so bit of a lucky dip!

They said as long as stocks last, but to check back every week as it may be ongoing..

  • Just had the lemon chicken, really nice for price, think food court bay maree style

    • bain-marie?

      • Mary's bath - it's all French to me 🇫🇷

  • +5

One thing worth noting is that the boxes are not airtight, they have a cardboard lid but no plastic film. This means that they'll probably won't last as long in a domestic freezer (especially if it's frost-free) unless you put them in a ziplock bag or something like that. It's probably fine for a few weeks but I wouldn't plan to buy tons and keep them around for months without using some additional packaging

    • Excellent point!

    • You can set pick up dates up to end of the year. I'd reccomend setting up a pick up date every month or so ;) this way you'll guaranteed get a meal for the rest of the year for $2.50 a pop.

  • Picked my 20 meal pack up today, at BNE airport. Just had the Beef Bourguignon for dinner. Not too bad at all. More flavoursome than the frozen meals I normally get from Woolies. I guess that's expected, given the website claims the meals are prepared by professional chefs.

Next time, I'll be buying the dinner/lunch ones instead of the mixed combo pack. At $2.50 per dinner tray vs $2.00 per breakfast tray, with breakfast significantly smaller than dinner, it's a no brainer which is better value.

    • +4

To be honest, the reason why it's more flavourful is because airlines usually deliberately make airplane foods more flavourful to counteract your diminished tastebuds in the air.

  • Got mine from Melbourne. A bit hard to find in the dark. Staff were lovely. Combo pack. Breakfast 5x banana bread with apple compote 180g 27/6 expiry, 5xegg white omelette 210g 17/7 expiry.
Main meals- beef massaman and rice, lemon chicken, chicken Parma, Mongolian beef with egg noodle, beef bourguignon, and a random beef bulgogi with rice in proper airline foil packaging. All between 270-290g. Expiry mostly in August except Parma 6/7. Frozen solid, didn't need an Esky.

  • I put one tray in the fridge for 6-ish hours to defrost and it's still frozen lol.

  • Ordered a 20 meal combo, received 19 with one missing breakfast. Dinner pack was tasty but the rice was hard and the veg tough. Breakfast pack was tasteless and needed seasoning. Disappointing.

    • Found the omelette needs something to make it tastier. Very bland. Main meals were tasty.

    • +1

Added a little Kewpie mayonnaise to the omelette - much nicer! Used the wasabi which is quite mild.

      • +1

I'll remember your advice next time I fly :-)

        • Never leave home without your little Kewpie👶

  • With the microwave heating times what power microwave are they referring to?

  • How does one even choose Saturday Melb. Pick up date shoots to Tuesday next week.

    • Needs 3 business days for the order, so you'd be able to choose the Saturday after on the payment screen.

      • Thanks, found the menu by going further into the process.

  • I finally had a look through my unlabelled meals (Perth). I bought two ten packs… all the packs seem to be exactly the same (some sort of rice dish). Have to say I'm a bit disappointed…hope they taste good!

    • So when you say there is no label is there an expiry date and heating instructions?

      • Nope.

  • As per the above comment, the meals out of Perth are unlabelled (no expiry date). I did notice that the full 20 packs were boxed up potentially with this information present on a sticker on the box, I only ordered a 10 pack of breakfasts and the meals were given loose in a plastic bag.

From the ones I've peaked into, it looks like I only got one type of meal, which judging from the linked brochure is the leek & potato fritatta / beef sausage / baked beans or the spinach feta rosemary frittata / chicken sausage / braised beans. Looks really good even frozen. Figure if they are all the same next time I'll just order one veg and one non-veg for varieties sake.

    • +3

ah yes, because personal opinion is the only justification behind whether or not something is a deal.

        • +4

Your opinion on airplane food isn't a valid neg vote. It's like you negging (as an example) a deal on cheap oranges because you don't like oranges and prefer apples.

          • -7

@kerfuffle: No, it isn't. It's like negging a purported "deal" on, say, fake memory cards. That's what airplane food is: fake food (yes, in my opinion).

A deal is an offer for a good price/quality ratio in the specific product category. The product category of airplane food is food. And its price/quality ratio is not good even at zero (again, yes, that's my opinion).

            • +3

@wisdomtooth: A biased opinion based on no experience with this product…
That's no basis for a neg vote by Voting Guidelines.

Close to 300 people have Upvoted vs your invalid Neg…

              price/quality ratio is not good

Low price. Good quality ingredients. I was impressed!
That's a very good ratio - in my opinion!

              Tasted pretty good to me👍
Better that supermarket bought frozen meals I've tried at much dearer prices.

Much dearer to buy on board, which I haven't done in so many flights.

Seems like a great Deal to me!

        • +1

I see my neg to the deal has been revoked. Ridiculous

The system this community now uses is to downvote invalid Negs. 8 downvotes & the Neg vote is gone. People voted. That is what happened.

There was only 1 other (invalid) Neg among 282 upvotes:

I come here to hear other OzBargainers opinions — yes, opinions! — not some admin party line

oh cry more, snowflake. your vote was revoked because, in the opinion of 12 other ozbargainers, we thought your neg vote was unwarranted and negged it into oblivion.

        • +2

I come here to hear other OzBargainers opinions — yes, opinions!

There were so many opinions of
          other OzBargainers - you ignored.

Including from people who have eaten these meals & enjoyed them.

And all those upvotes! That's a strong opinion by other OzBargainers!

And the comments based on research that airline food taste is influenced by our bodies at altitude - it's not the fault of the food.

And ignoring the effect that bulk heating of the food & likely slow delivery to the passenger in a plane has on influencing the experience. That is very different to us heating it up for ourselves.

This Deal is simply for frozen meals - that have never been on a plane…
          And not eaten at 10,000m!

So to say "I'd rather fast than put shit down my throat" is ignoring all those other OzBargainers opinions you say you want to hear from!!

Guess you are the expert opinion here on putting shit down my throat!
I'd rather enjoy these cheap tasty good quality meals🍴

          • -7

@INFIDEL: Taste is not a measure of quality. In my opinion. That's where we disagree. The disagreement should be allowed and transparent here, rather than "revoked". I didn't "ignore" other people's opinions; I disagree with them (as I do with yours). There's no need for any single opinion to prevail—all opinions should be showed and counted, not revoked or hidden. This one-party system is just plain fascistic.

            • +1

@wisdomtooth: I didn't "ignore" other people's opinions; I disagree with them (as I do with yours).
Trouble is - I didn't say I based my opinion on the quality of this product on taste! I added that I found it was tasty. Taste is very subjective.

You don't even justify why you imagine this product is of low quality - never trying it yourself. The experience is very different to that in flight.

              Your opinion is shown.
I considered the quality of the ingredients in front of me, and on eating them. You didn't!

Opinions based on actual purchase & consumption of the product hold a far higher weight than your theoretical opinion which should hold no weight.

How can you know the quality of the food when you haven't even tried it. That opinion counts for nothing!

And by expressing your biased & unfounded opinion, being downvoted on it - it shows you are able to express it.

If you bought the product & held the opinion it was of poor quality etc - that would be different. But you didn't.

Others are able to express their opinion. And they have with your comments.

You are now asking others not to be able to express an opinion different to yours!
While demanding your opinion (based on what - an idea you made up in your mind) to be heard??

I'll stick with experienced opinion over biased theoretical thoughts any day!

The OzBargain Voting Guidelines point to your Neg Vote being invalid - your vote was always going to be removed.

              • -4

                @INFIDEL:

You are now asking others not to be able to express an opinion different to yours!

I'm not. I'm simply asking for my vote not to be "revoked" and my comments not to be greyed out or hidden.

I don't mind you or others criticising my opinion—that's par for the course when one publicly expresses one's opinion. What I'm objecting to is having it censored. I get it that in the vote count one would like to see widely objected opinions weighed less than widely supported ones, but revoking votes is a very poor way of implementing that. Weighing ain't revoking.

                • @wisdomtooth: The rules & guidelines of this community, like the OzBargain Voting Guidelines are there for a purpose.

I'm simply asking for my vote not to be "revoked…"
That would mean others could not express their opinion by downvoting your comment - which you just said you don't want!!
So you are asking the community guidelines not to apply to you!!
Who do you think you are??

It's a guideline that Ozbargainers should be aware of. Your vote did not meet the standard set by the community.
It has been revoked by the community.

Who knows why you expect a comment, based on no actual evidence or personal experience with the product, in which you criticise the product - should not be criticised with downvotes, especially when you couple it with an invalid Neg Vote!

The fastest way on OzBargain to attract neg votes is to complain about neg votes. So expect more, not less😉
But your comments seem to be designed to attract criticism… So why complain when you get what you intended?

Those who downvoted & continue to downvote your comment are doing what is expected by this community's guidelines!

Using neg votes (a limited resource of 5 per day) is often not what people want to do. I don't.

The Mods have said it is the community responsibility now to remove an invalid Neg Vote by devoting at least 8 times.

If you disagree with how this community operates - take it up with the Mods. Try TWAM.

Discuss the Deal / product, not what you imagine it is.

                  Your initial comment was useless!
It seems designed to attract criticism in a very popular Deal - by saying it is Not a Deal based on no justification but your imagination.

Provoking negs & then complaining about them - I think that is a deeper issue than just this Deal…

                  • -1

                    @INFIDEL:

That would mean others could not express their opinion by downvoting your comment - which you just said you don't want!!

Did I? Where? No, I didn't. I said "I don't mind you or others criticising my opinion"—thats the exact opposite of that. You're either misunderstanding what I wrote or deliberately misconstruing it.

If you disagree with how this community operates

I do. Precisely what I expressed when I said it's "a poor way of implementing it".

It has been revoked by the community.

Yeah, that's fascistic. It presumes and promotes homogeneity of opinion.

Who do you think you are??

A member of this community, an OzBargainer.

                    • @wisdomtooth: Seems you not only criticise the imagined quality of this food without trying it…

But also criticise what people write, without reading / comprehending it!

Handy if you want to believe you are right & others wrong!!

Again you read the opposite of my comment!
While accusing me of reading the opposite of yours.

I specifically pointed out - in that excerpt, that you said you didn't want to restrict others opinions!

"That would mean others could not express their opinion… which you just said you don't want!!"

But consider what you are asking of this community… Just for you!!

"I'm simply asking for my vote not to be "revoked" and my comments not to be greyed out or hidden."

That would require one of the folowing:

                      1. Members not express their opinion as they did

                      2. The community rules don't apply to you!

                      3. You somehow change the OzBargain rules retrospectively - which won't happen.

Why should everything change just just because you stuffed up?

Maybe consider why your comments are receiving so many neg votes!

And stop complaining how your opinion can't be heard! We can't easily avoid it!!

Your screwed up with your claim that this is Not a deal

It is very much a Deal - a VERY popular one, with 21k clicks!! People comment they have enjoyed the food.

Everything after that is your justification of why you are right & should be heard.

That's a tactic used by children & politicians when they stuff up - & almost no one believes them!

Whether you would or wouldn't eat these is a personal preference, so irrelevant.

Vegans for instance would not be interested in these, because it's very much not Vegan. That's a valid reason.

But personal preferences are not a valid reason for a Neg Vote, by our Voting Guidelines!

So what did the Mods say about the changes you want??

Doesn't seem you understand this community, and think the rules, systems & guidelines don't apply to you - thinking it is only about you!
                      This isn't OzYou!!

Have BLOCKED your pointless self-centred comments! Not worth reading.

                      I'm out!
Sigh of relief from other Ozbargainers😉

@INFIDEL: i'm amazed you lasted as long as you did. i wouldn't have as much patience for petulant children who shriek fascism! and chuck tantrums because something didn't go their way. my experience with people who carry on about how important their opinion is are typically insufferably opinionated and domineering.

also, it's amazing for someone who's been on ozbargain for that long but is still oblivious to the way comment voting works? and yet continues to hang around the website despite such vehement objection to certain features of it.

                        • +1

                          @tdw: Thanks for that comment.

When considering responding like this (very rarely), I look at the other person's profile. There seemed no other comments like these. No recent history of their comments being negged. A normal Ozbargainer.

(One of my first comments on OzBargain was to question the decision of a Mod. I was sin binned! And earnt my first Badge (Commentator) in that heated discussion!
So I see nothing wrong in questioning systems - on valid grounds. It's how things can change.)

The person, as you noticed, has been around for 12 years - a long time for an Ozbargainer. The system of revoking a Neg Vote has changed fairly recently, from Reporting for a decision by a Mod. Changes in a system you've been part of for that long can cause discomfort.

So this seems a very unusual response by this Ozbargainer.
Changes like this can be an indication they may be going through some difficulty, or maybe just a bad day. So talking it out may help.

Few like being negged, especially when they feel strongly about a subject. Commendably, they didn't neg my comments in response.

For me - I was avoiding my own work😉 Now back to work!

    Just collected mine from Mascot.
    I received a good assortment of non-veg (60%) and veg (40%) meals.
    Beef Bourguignon (expiring 26Aug2020)
Pasta Gnocchi Pumpkin (Veg, expiring 19Aug2020)
    Chicken Mango Curry (expiring 28Jun2020)
Mie Goreng Noodle (Veg, expiring 02Jul2020)
Thai Yellow Curry (Veg, expiring 08Sep2020)

Place was a little difficult to locate. I had to drive through a lane to reach the back of GateGourmet compound.

  • Pick up mine today, 8 out of 20 are expired, very disappointed..I know it's 2 bucks each but come on..

That's terrible. Did you check before you left? I guess you didn't think you would need to.
Wonder if they will triage the expired ones.
That's a heads up to others to check the expiry date when they pick up.

      • I didn't check on the spot nor expect that would happen, so guys check ONSITE! Btw I pick up from mascot site.

If it's a best before date, then that's pretty poor form (although not illegal).

However, if it's actually a use by date, then it's actually illegal for them to sell!

I know it's not that much money in the grand scheme of things, but on principle, it would be worth contacting them to let them know and perhaps to push for a refund.

      • yeah, they are use by date..having say that I always enjoy airplane food, I'll try email them and see what happen -)

Picked up mine today (boy it was a fair walk from Mascot Station for me….) and they were organised - give your name, wait 2 mins and they hand you the packs pre-bagged already.

I actually think I got more than 20 boxes even though I only paid for the breakfast/lunch/dinner combo and I lucked out and didnt get any of the french toast. I tried one of the meals (mongolian beef with noodles) and really cant complain; portion is small-ish but I can pad that with a decent sandwich.

    • Are there no car park nearby?

Also, if you order combo, there is no drop-down box option to select Veg/non-veg

      • You can drive in to their compound (on the street entrance follow the signs saying Staff/Visitors) and no you cant pick what will be in the combo but chances are that you will get a mix of veg and non-veg. The non-veg options tend to be breakfast (eggs and the like) and the yellow curry and mee goreng noodles for lunch/dinner.

We got ours last week. Good deal. Just bought one 10 meal pack for lunches during the week. Most expiry Aug, some end of July. Good mix of meals, some more tasty than others, but all comparable to a supermarket meal. Meals are for Virgin based on packaging. I’m buying more this weekend.
Here are some examples of what we got….
