If only one was near newcastle.

    • Not sure if they are still interested in opening one at Boolaroo?

  • Is costco any good? I normally just buy things that are on special from woolworths. Is there a lot more saving to be had at costco? Costco is a good 40 minute drive from me and taking into account the membership price, im wondering if its worth it?

    • +2

      No…
If your travelling 40mins. One way
      Suggestion..
Visit a Costco store with a friend or
you can look around 4 free and see the prices and then decide if its worth joining.
Plus if your not happy, they refund the fee no question asked, but your unable to join again after a year of absence.

      • Don't need to go with a member, just tell them you're interested in joining and want to look around. Won't be able to buy anything as a non-member.

Depends. I used to buy exclusively from woolworths. When I switched to Costco I was surprised how everything was so cheap there, but I was buying everything in bulk. For example I used to buy Pears soap from Woolies at generally $2 per bar (in packs of 3 so total of $6). At Costco I got a box of 48 bars for around 50 (half price but spending so much more).

Not only were we spending more in the first few months we started running out of space everywhere. Kitchen drawer where we stored baking paper, glad wrap, foil sheets could not hold the jumbo rolls from Costco.

Continued using it because we thought in the long run we would still save money. Then I started buying all sorts of crap I shouldn't have been buying in the monthly grocery run. I thought I needed jeans, pj's, books, gadgets, tools every time I went there.

Haven't renewed my membership in 2 years now. Happy with Aldi, cheaper than Costco prices, much fewer choices to make (less time spend choosing).

    • Thanks for the advise. As mentioned i'll find a friend with a card and have a look around and see if it is worth it. I have a habit of bulk buying deals, which i always get grief from the Mrs

    • Costco allows you to split payments and officially allows you to return anything and refund to any card you prefer. That might be easily worthing more than $60 for some.

For me I buy and return abt $300-500 worth of sealed, non perishable and clearly resellable products everytime I shop there. Havent had any problem or being labelled as excessive/abusive returner since I only do that with items they can just put back on the shelf and resell. It is well within their membership T&Cs too.

Costco also sells gift cards and they give you change in cash.

      • Why is this a useful feature ?

And why would you buy hundreds of dollars worth of goods, just to return ?!

        • Probably trying to manufacture credit card spending for (bonus) points

@kerfuffle: Ah ok, so basically just some fraud.

I naively assumed I was missing something useful 😁

            • @Nom: It is not fraud. Refunding to the original card is typically in the agreement between the merchant and the acquiring bank. Maybe Costco got something different but I think they just don't care.

          • @kerfuffle: I don't normally do that directly as the return is too small. It is a way to cash out those mc/visa giftcards completely free.

            • @truetypezk: Then as Nom pointed out:

why would you buy hundreds of dollars worth of goods, just to return ?!

              • +1

@kerfuffle: Did you read my reply? Mostly to cash out prepaid v/mc cards. Sometimes they can be byproducts of MS but I dont really bother to just use my credit cards directly at Costco for MS. I doubt you can do better than 2% with direct spending.

Aldi brand is cheaper but if you buying brand name Costco is cheaper as you buying bulk

  • My local store at Bundamba was giving out bbq cooler bags if you auto renewed, not sure they did the $10 gift card tho hmm !

North Lakes was doing either one

  • I have an issue with getting the renewal email 2 months before it's due then when you go through the checkout that ask again if you want to renew. I'll renew when it's due and not before however with the auto renewal will they take the money two months before the due date which I think is ridiculous.

I’ve seen a guy run in and buy 2 of the overgrown roasted chickens only.
Membership is worth it for that the specials and the cheap hotdog drink combo 😀

At Canberra at least they don’t check your membership when going to the food area, so don’t need a membership for that.

Don’t forget the fuel guys. I saved at least 10 cents per litre every time for my diesel !!! Savings of at least $20 per full tank.

  • +5

When your membership lapses, it doesn't prevent you entering the store. They just renew the membership when you go through the checkout, if it's needed.
So you essentially aren't paying a membership fee for the time between it expiring and when your first shop is after that time. For some people that could be months and this deal would be pointless. If you're going every other week (then maybe).

    • +2

You need to wait for 2 full months after your expiry to enjoy the "extended" time. Otherwise it renews from the date of expiry.

      • Well TIL. I'm usually a 3-4month interval shopper at Costco, so thats perhaps why I've always wondered why anyone would renew at any other time than when they tell them it's due at the checkout.

Costco have lifetime warranty on their TVs. So if it develops a fault at any time in the future you can take it back and get a replacement or refund. The only condition is that your membership can not ever expire.

  • Went in store they advise promotion is over ages ago

    • They posted it on the official Facebook page at 6pm AEDT yesterday.

Perhaps they’ve run this before and the staff member you spoke to didn’t realise it had started up again?
