Pretty good deal just for the amp.

Hard pressed to find a stereo receiver only with hdmi arc/4k bypass for that price.

Newbiw here…I'm looking to set up my home theatre for a new build. I want to add some rear ceiling speakers and my sound bar to this. Will this unit be OK?
Also want to add ceiling speakers around the house too. Can this hook up to those speakers in the other rooms too?

    • -1

      No

      • +2

Thanks. Do you have any suggestions?

        • There's so many variables, that it's hard to offer a suggestion. You can't really add a sound bar to a system as the sound bar has an amp in it already.

        • +1

You need a 5.1 (at least) home theatre amp if you want to add surround speakers. I suggest used, quality name brand stuff.

  • I remember Onkyo being a great brand in the 90's, is it still quality or they sold the name to someone else like other hi-fi brands have done in the past?

    • +1

Think they are owned by one big group, planning to take over b&w i think

      70's, 80's and early 90's, great stuff… Not so much after that…

A number of us on here who bought receivers from them about 5-8 years ago have had hdmi board failures. Common issue for a few years. Overseas they offered to fix them outside of warranty but the Australian disty wasn't so keen.

    Looks like a great system

Have been using onkyo AV receivers and they are always solid

  • For someone who is not a audiophile, or a music/sound aficionado, and who lives in an apartment with (which I think are ) thin walls:
Is this a better sound system or the Hisense posted few hours back? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/544651

    All I want is:
    - While watching movie, clear audio (i prefer clear voice/dialogue over music. I dont want music to drown out the dialogue)
    - During night time, a 'night mode' of sort, that reduces the rumble(bass?) and focuses on voice/dialogue clarity

Currently using a 8 year old Samsung HT-D555W (with back 2 speakers missing/broken).

    • Also interested, small home on stilts with paper thin walls and wedged between two neighbouring homes with kids. Night bass mode sounds heavenly

Who cares about neighbours these days?!

    • I'd go for the onkyo system, but neither has a dedicated centre channel, which is mostly dedicated to dialogue.

      • What would be the best sound system for voice clarity - asking since you sound well informed?
Everything else to me is secondary.
I was hoping that Hisense would be good but this comment from a buyer today s discouraging : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/544651#comment-8855705

        • Hi dude - best bet is to buy something with at least 5.1 output (Dolby Digital/DTS) so you can pump the centre channel then eq it to emphasise the voice. I run this type of system at home.

          • @AlanHB: Thx man. Out of curiosity, what do you run at home, and what setup?

            • @Covid19: I run a Marantz 5.1 amp with Q Acoustics speakers (centre, two front, two rear, and a powered sub). Got it all for around $300 used on ebay.

            • @Covid19: Sorry for the delayed response - I run a Yamaha receiver with Dali speakers.

    • +1

Just turn the sub off haha

  • Is it worth selling my sonos setup and getting this. I have the soundbase and 2 x play:3 connected for a 5.1 setup. The soundbase has a decent built in sub

    • Probably not… Unless you genuinely want more sub bass.

I dare say the Soundbar is more mid bass.

  • Could you use these as PC bookshelf speakers? is this recommended?

  • +2

Not a great brand after knowingly selling receivers with faulty HDMI boards. Would never buy this brand again in a pink fit.

  • +6

$1,800? Yeah, ok. I wouldn't even pay the 'bargain' price of $595 for it.

  • comparing Bose soundtouch 130?

  • Hi All, is this any good for hooking with tv? How does this connect with tv, via hdmi?

    • +2

Yes it has 4 HDMI ports. I have one. Speakers are crap, I replaced them with two bookshelf speakers and it's powerful enough for a small room. Inbuilt Chromecast audio is unusable. Everything else ok for the price.

      • Why do you say the Chromecast is unusable?

        • +1

It takes ages to connect to the source e.g. Apple Music. It stutters, fails to load songs, etc. I now have a real Chromecast Audio connected to the optical input and it works flawlessly.

          • @bromuro: Ah that sucks, I have a different model Onkyo receiver and the built in Chromecast audio works pretty well. I can’t always control volume on it as a part of a speaker group though. Do you reckon it was an issue with internet connection on the receiver? If you’re playing Apple Music, does AirPlay work better?

            • @Hargain Bunter: Definitely the receiver. It's underpowered or something - genuinely unusable. Spotify Connect works well most of the time though.

          • @bromuro: I thought Chromecast audio was discontinued? Are they still available?

            • +1

@PowerPants: Sadly they are discontinued. They change hands for good money second hand too :(

      • Thanks, probaly not for me. My living room is an opening area.

  • +1

I think it's an issue with the inbuilt Chromecast. AirPlay works fine.

    • What’s the issue with the built in Chromecast? Support for Chromecast is why I am considering this.

      • It's completely unusable on this receiver. Do not get it for this feature. Spotify Connect works well though.

  • Very tempting but actually don’t need the speakers or the sub, wonder if you can get them on their own. Bought an elipson turntable from these guys recently, great service and turntable.

  • This is not the soundbar one like JB had ?

  • Looks like just an amp and speaker and sub package
