100hz refresh rate in 2020… Meh

      • +1

I thought it was 60 for this TV?

        • +2

          Yes it is 60hz.

All these companies use some marketing terms like Samsung calls it - "Motion Rate".

Motion Rate of 100 indicates a native refresh of 60Hz

          Sorry about the confusion

          • +1

@OzSikh: how can the consumer find out the native refresh rate, can i ask? Cos i went to the product page and even downloaded their extra spec manual and all it says is "motion rate" 100 hertz, doesnt say 60 anywhere unless i missed it. This would be an absolute deal-breaker for me if it was a cap of 60 so yeah can i just ask htf the consumer is meant to find out if they dont list it anywhere? Thanks in advance!

edit: also what would you be using that requires above 100 hertz?

            • +1

@Iggemo: A higher refresh rate — say, 120 Hz — will look better than a 60-Hz refresh rate, especially in fast-paced action scenes and sporting events.

So if a refresh rate is 120 Hz, it means that the image is refreshed 120 times per second. In theory, the more pictures per second, the more realistic the motion or video should appear.

For more info see here - https://www.tomsguide.com/amp/us/tv-refresh-rates-explained,…

              • +1

@OzSikh: Thanks, yeah, i know what refresh rate is, i meant what source are you using that is above 100 that makes you say 100 is meh in 2020?

Like, i would be looking for something for Xbox Series X and i doubt any games are gonna run higher than that?

And yeah i dont understand how any consumer can find out the native refresh rate when it isnt listed anywhere (as i mentioned above), that shouldnt be allowed surely?

              • @OzSikh: NO, it absolutely will not. more frames makes it look worse, you want your HZ in lock step with the source, that's all that matters.
Turning 60hz into 120hz doesn't make anything smoother, even in fast paced things. you are confusing motion smoothing technologies with the panel rise and fall time. often the colour accuracy and reproduction is much worse on a 120hz set.

If you're using it for netflix, then 60hz and all enhancements off is the recommended : https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=….

most movies are 24p / frames per second..
there is very little issue with "ghosting" on modern tv's of any kind, but the cheaper the worse.

If you're planning on hooking up an xbox then you might want something that can truly reproduce 120hz… HDMI 2.0, but that doesn't always mean that the TV can do it.

            • +1

@Iggemo: Unfortunately you'll need to do some digging to get native panel refresh rates. As a minimum the Q70 from samsung, x950 from Sony and LG's OLED tvs have 120hz panels. This usually means you can run native 120hz on 1080p or 1440p, 4k 120hz is a different beast and needs HDMI 2.1 which are only found on flagship tv's, plus one hell of a GPU to run at said resolution.

PC gaming is moving to 1440 @ 120hz as the mainstream resolution, hence the want for a "gaming" tv.

              • @krisspy: Thanks heaps for that info, appreciated. It's kinda shoddy you have to go to a third-party ratings website to find the actual specs of a TV rather than the actual manufacturer website, disappointing.

I'm in the market for a 43 incher for use with Xbox Series X but im not sure any of them go up to that kind of frequency!

                • +1

@Iggemo: Sony 49" x950 is probably the smallest 4k TV that has 120 hz panel, but i dont think this was released in Aus.

ASUS ROG Strix XG438Q is your only option at 43", but its not a TV and it costs more than the samsung 55" Q70 lol.

                  • @krisspy: Looks like 60 hz it is, sigh, thanks anyways for that info dude i do appreciate it. I wonder if VRR and other things will become more common after Series X is released.

Edit, sorry, i meant 100hz it is since it seems the 2020 models of Samsung and LG are 100 hertz refresh rates according to JB, unless thats also false advertising?

                    • +1

@Iggemo: Yes and no. There are truly only 60hz and 120hz panels in the market right now. 100hz is "marketing" motion rate.

When people talk native refresh, it means your source feeds 120 frames to the TV and it will show those 120 frames. Manufacturers bs around this by having a 60hz panel show "100 frames" by interpolation.

So pc feeds 60 frames and TV outputs 100 frames by essentially adding its own frames by analysing the motions on screen. Hence you get the soap opera effect with weird looking artifacts here and there.

Any models under Q70, x950 etc won't accept anything higher than 60hz from your computer or console, it'll make up its own frames to get that 100hz. Essentially it's useless for gaming.

Either save for a true 120hz TV or just ignore the marketed rates and get what looks best for your budget 😂

Yeah I got this TV a couple weeks ago, $1500 from the Good guys in Brisbane without any haggling, couldn't be bothered waiting for a deal any longer.

I'm no PQ snob so probably not the best source of feedback picture wise, that's what rtings is for anyway, and it replaced a 32" fhd Sony, but with that disclaimer out of the way I couldn't be happier, very little screen reflections, seems fast to boot and navigate, I like the minimalist remote, looks great flush mounted. Now would a tu8000 have done the job for a bit cheaper, possibly, but they had none in stock and to my very crude eye the picture quality looks great.

So yeah no regrets, even with the price TBH.

      • Obviously no use now, but I feel haggling at TGG is a worthwhile exercise. Got an LG B9 OLED from $2999 to $2500 odd just by asking.

        • When I say no haggling I didn't pay RRP, it was $1610 from GG commercial and they didn't have a tu8000 in stock so the $1500 he offered was a fair bit under list.

  • +1

I was really hoping a Q80T would be on this list, but unfortunately not.

    • +6

well $2380 if you dont mind paying the difference & q70 $1995

      • +1

if the q80t goes to 2k ill bite

      • +1

Oh i must have missed it! Cheers!!! I'll have to see if there's a 55" too

        • 55” they only have q70 $1495 delivered & q60 $1196 + shipping

  • Great price

  • +1

    No shipping for WA :(

  • How is it compared to TU8000 or UN7300?
    Absolutely better?

    • would have to be they are the base models

      • Then… Would $150 be worth to upgrade from TU8000/UN7300 to Q60T?

        • you would think, but here's review side by side

        • There honestly doesn't seem like much different, the Q60T is brighter and the room I put it in has a fair bit of light which I was concerned about but it handles it well, so maybe the tu8000 wouldn't have faired as well. I see the tu8000 is supposed to have better speakers, that is interesting as I was surprised by how good the Q60T sounds.

It was a toss up for me between them but they had no tu8000s in stock so the choice was made simple, the price difference was about $220 from memory with GG commercial, honestly I think you couldn't go too wrong with either.

        • Samsung goes backwards with their tv's every year, TU8000 is worst than last years base model samsungs. Q series is better than T models, if you're not a PQ fanatic then you'd want atleast a Q70 or above for 120 hz panel, otherwise get whatever fits your budget.

LG has nice bright IPS panels and probably the best in built smart features with the magic remote, but has weird shadows on the edges due to IPS.

          • @krisspy: Thanks man for the clarification.
So your recommendation is maybe LGs right?
Could you kindly recommend 55-65" TVs under $1,500?

            • @bkkim: What's your main use?

Hisense oled is at that price range.

Samsung q70t has hdmi 2.1 and actual 120hz panel. Best for future proofing and upcoming consoles.

LG has the best smart ui with their magic remote.

  • +1

Nice. Perfect for my parents, ordered =D

    • -1

Very generous. Wouldn't a cheaper kogan 4k tv be better for parents, as they probably couldn't tell the difference in picture quality?

      • +5

Not a gift, just helping them spend their insurance payout from the Totally Normal 2019-2020 Bushfire Season.

  • Went with the q70t for 120hz refresh rates, paid an extra $100.

Also 55" was more suited to my living space.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274397850441

    • Is it Q70T much better? 65" $1890 will have to wait for it to get cheaper, looking for single stand TV.

      Q70T

      • It's the cheapest hdmi 2.1 with 120hz panel we have in aus.

If you don't necessarily need those get the Hisense Q8 instead. It has FALD and will have a better picture than the Q70t with edge lit.

  • Gonsky :(
