Sucks that they removed the $2.80 cap for Sundays.

    • +3

      Can't believe that's going :(

    • The Sunday cap started off at $2.50 when Opal was introduced in 2013trial-2015. It has been going up with each EOFY rise in line with IPART since then. The Sunday cap was great, but a lot more happens on Saturday so if this cap covers for all weekend including Sunday then I'm on board.

Out of fairness to our intercity passengers, it really should have been a standard peak period all round when it was the 7am to 9am in metro areas and it should be with this new pricing structure 6-10am for all passengers, metro and intercity regardless.

I wonder if this means a longer peak will correlate with more public transport in those times?

      • +3

Even before that it was called Family Fun Day Sunday lol on those red MyTrain Tickets.

        • But the rule of that was you had to be a family of at least 2 to get the $2.50 fare for each passenger.

MyZone Fares for Family Funday Sunday found here. **Family Funday Sunday
$2.50 per person for all day travel on CityRail, Sydney Buses, Sydney Ferries and participating private bus companies. Available every Sunday, when a minimum of one adult and one child related by family are travelling together.

A station access fee applies when using any of the Airport Line stations - Green Square, Mascot, Domestic Airport or International Airport. View the full terms and conditions.**

This changed so each individual regardless of passenger type, young, old, single or family were paying $2.50 each individual.

Well this is shit. All the times I travel are peak. Can't win, leave after 10am good luck finding parking at the station.

    • Exactly, I can't imagine who would benefit from the 10am-3pm non-peak period.

      • +1

Only those who live close to a station or have a reliable service to get them to stations will win from this. On top of that there is no way my employer would agree for me to start that late just to miss peak period.

        • I think the intention is to get people who are price sensitive (i.e. receiving jobseeker/jobkeeper, the dole etc..) off of services in peak times so that people who are commuting for work the best chance of being able to distance

  • +1

We see that as Transport minister announce a state transport small increase in network fares on 6th July then temporary an increase to 50% discount on as usual 30% off peak fares for three months. Big promo but nothing discount really after all.

Just wonder the inflationary increase rate will be for the network this year??

Sunday cap remove is arrogant and total rip off

    • Not even 3 months, the email I received says just 2 months

50% discount for off-peak travel on metro, train, bus and light rail from 6 July until 6 September 2020

  • Pretty annoying they have increased the peak times.

    • They don't want packed trains, because you know, the global pandemic?

      • +2

This has nothing to do with the global pandemic, if it were the increased peak times would only be temporary.

Not a good deal for Sunday travelers at all. A family of 4 to the city and home for ~$10, now it will be ~$32. The opposite of a bargain.

    • Unless you’ve reached the $50 weekly cap

  • -1

Guess why they decided to increase public transport fare by 5% each year?
Because people are using public transport!

"This determination was made in the context of strong growth in the use of public transport."

    • +1

Nah you're interpreting it wrong. What they meant was that they were originally going to increase fares by 10% to cover their rising costs, but due to the strong growth in public transport, they've managed to make it work with only a 5% increase. We should all thank them for giving us such a great bargain!

      /s (or maybe not?)

I have seen people waiting at the gate until 9am to catch train to work, now I believe lot of working forces are affected.

In fact there is minimal or no change to long distance commuters. People travel long distance to be subsided by people live within 20km from CBD, this just pushing more car into the road, this is completely against the purpose of building the train network using public fund.

  • +5

Not a bargain. Peak hours have been extended from 9am to 10am and from 4PM to 3PM, reduces the usefulness of this offer. At least those who do travel 10AM-3PM on the bus and light rail will benefit from 50% off. Increasing Sunday cap from $2.80 to $8.05 is insanity - I will definitely be driving a lot more in the next few months.

    • Still have 1.5 weeks for driving less

  • +1

Man…they made the peak time from 6:30am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm. I often take the train @ 6am and 3:30pm. They caught me out on 3pm one. Smart way to make money.

    • +1

Id say they want to encourage you to travel 5:30 -3 due to social distancing. They are losing money. I'm all about free public transport, I think profitable public assets should subsidise unprofitable public assets, but unfortunately nsw sold and privatised so much we are now at user pays.

  • This is the opposite ofba bargain. Interested to know if anyone on here is actually better off under there new fare strutures?

    • +3

Interested to know if anyone on here is actually better off under there new fare strutures?

      Transport NSW?

  • Whereas commuters had an incentive to travel a bit earlier or later to avoid the crush to and from work on the trains, there is no incentive to do that from July.

Get ready for more weekend Sydney traffic with the elimination of the Sunday $2.80 flat fare. If anything, it should have been extended to Saturday as well rather than be abolished.

Hopefully, after the three month trial, the NSW government recognises the folly of this cash grab.

  • Slow clap to our NSW Government.

  • +1

this is not a deal, more like announcement, all the benefits pretty much gone, bus travel is always off-peak, now they going to implement peak time to bus travel? soft the blow by give TEMPORARY 50% off instead of 30% off peak, what a joke, constance should be fire a long time a go.

    • +1

Agreed not a deal. However, bus fares during the peak remain the same and you can now access 50% off from 10AM-3PM instead. I think usually the longest distance fares is $4.80 for adults and will be $2.40 in the off-peak period which was previously not available.

      • I see, still, the benefits are far less than price increase in other area, most travelers will pay more by new changes.

  • Since when did they change the off peak times?

  • +1

Removing Sunday cap now onward is a very big deal. Why the HELL remove this? $8.05 cap weekend fares is expensive start point nonetheless.

Government is slowing gouging us with this fare structure. Shameless arrogant constance minster.

  • +1

This discourages me even more to avoid going into the office

  • time to make all my uni classes for next semester between 10 and 3 ahahaha. Any idea how long this discount will last?

  • +1

    Rubbish

  • The $8.05 weekend travel rip off will ensure that the Libs turbo maximise the profits of their Toll Road operator political donors and corporate masters.

Instead of paying $10 to take public transport - millions of families will now hit the roads on Sundays to avoid paying $40 in public transport fares.

This will condition an entire generation of kids to think that environmentally destructive car transport on weekends is the only way to get around.

So the toll road operators and car dealers make billions - while average Joe and the environment gets totally shafted.

    It's the LIEberALIEN way.

  • +1

Trying to sell a price increase as a discount. (profanity) off.

  • +1

This really disadvantages commuters on intercity services. Having morning peak travel times of 6am – 8am is very fair when one is travelling from 2-3 hours away. Pointless doing a day trip within the new off peak times for intercity travellers.

  • +1

My working hour is 9:00-18:00 and I manage to get the peak hour now. It will cost me more when the new rules coming. I believe the purpose of this is not for the safety under COVID 19 but rip off normal commuters.

  • How is a worse deal a bargain?

  • Seriously? Are they losing money? Working from home is a new norm now?

  • Holy shit the bus fare is going up nearly 50%! What a joke!

  • +1

This is so sad. In a world where public transport is suppose to help people, now AGAIN it will drive people to taking the car more
