Doesn't appear to be customisable unfortunately. Would have been nice to be able to add another 8gb RAM. I'm on the lookout for a mid/low tier gaming laptop for travel but this doesn't seem to be it.

    • +2

Same. I settled on one of the Asus tuf models but the prices have jumped way up.

    • +3

Has a single DIMM slot so you'd have to settle for a single 16GB.

  • +1

16GB would been nice but its already been built

  • +5

8GB not much these days. Can’t customise them 😔

    • IKR. A single Chrome tab would totally eat the whole memory up

      • -1

I'd recommend you try the new edge browser. Uses about 50% less ram than chrome and is the same speed or faster at most tasks since it is based on chromium. It's also compatible with all chrome extensions.

I'm a Android and Google user and have used chrome for many years now. Switched a few months ago and don't think I'll ever go back to the mess of a browser that is chrome.

        • yep I switched to Microsoft Edge and never looked back

Do you have a sale on AMD new ryzen chip, TA?

    • +4

Lenovo suggests availability around August timeframe, but pricing won’t be spectacular early on. Will know more late next month.

      • Yeah be good if we can get something on a X13. Ready to buy

  • Can we add an 8GB sodimm in?

  • +5

Seems to have the ever popular 220 nits 45% NTSC screen

  • It's hard to find specs but it seems to have only one SO-DIMM Slot.
So it's either 4 GB soldered + 1x4 GB SO-DIMM, or just 8 GB soldered RAM with a spare SO-DIMM slot.. Or maybe it's just one SO-DIMM and no soldered RAM??
I found a pic of the mobo and it had one SO-DIMM slot and under that was soldered RAM, but that may have been VRAM.

Have one of these great machine which I use for work.

    • how is the battery life?

      • I get about 5-6 hours from it. I do usually have it plugged in.

        • How do you get 5-6 hours battery? I have this machine and rarely get more than 90 minutes with light web surfing..

          • @nedski: Wow that is terrible 😬

          • @nedski: Maybe you have a faulty battery, I use lot of excel and web browsing for work. Works well for me.

            • +2

@JoBevo: There are plenty of comments from people on forums that they only get 90 to 120 minutes of use out of the laptop before battery dies. Its only a 40wh battery though so not sure how they make claims it runs for up to 5-6 hours.

To be fair, I had fun playing games on it initially but now I just web surf on it and I wish I had something lighter and more battery efficient.

          • @nedski: well worn battery, simple

            • @sticky8anana: I understand the point you are trying to make but straight out of the box, I have never got long battery use out of the laptop.

              • @nedski: then you should take it for a replacement if not already

Just nitpicking: How does one game at 250nits?

    • +1

      only game in the dark

      • what should be ideal NITS mate for home use plus casual gaming.. I purchased one recently and returned it as it was too hard to see screen.. never knew about NITS..

The reason why I chosen Asus ROG strix instead, with more Ram better quality build

    • Just looked through Reddit lots of comments about it having poor and cheap build quality.

      • +3

I've basically cut Lenovo in to 2 basic halves.
        Thinkpad - better build quality
        Ideapad - shite

So as i rule i eliminate the second straight off leaving the Thinkpad range.
There are some pretty average Thinkpads, but it's rare for them to be outright terrible, i it is passable that some of the cheaper ones are not built like a brick outhouse given they are usually somewhat sturdy and reasonable value sometimes.

      • -2

Lenovo is worse. I trust Taiwan brand more.

    • Can you get a strix for under $1200

edit: I commented too soon should probably have searched passed deals first see they dont cost too much more

      • Probably not but for 200 dollars more maybe, worth the extra

  • -1

The only black chasses I can deal with so far are only Thinkpads :|

  • This was gen 2019, gen 2020 seems have better design and way better cpu performance except gpu remains same.

  • 8GB RAM is the only real issues here… The 1650 is super decent, and the i5 supports it quite nicely, but 8GB RAM will definitely cause issues

  • This or AMD 4700U? Probably hold off till I see one of these deals with local stock.

    Lenovo is a Chinese company?

    • Yes, and? Flip you current laptop and look for where it's been made, everything made in China

    • +6

Not just where its made, you should check the brand who owns it to determine your purchase.

      • +1

Yes, was looking at buying it and did some research that Lenovo is a Chinese company. I’ll stick to another brand.

        • Don't forget to check where your food sources their gluten. The AU factory costs more than the Chinese. One of the big reasons many products aren't 100% made in AU on the label.

    • Lenovo is not the best company to deal with

Not only do they include marketing / spyware in their oem installations they have even gone so far as to make their stuff impossible to remove
      https://www.theregister.com/2015/08/12/lenovo_firmware_nasty…

They bought the PC manufacturer division off IBM when IBM became an IT consulting company.

They are still popular because they kept the good designs from IBM, They are one of the few brands that make laptops better built than Apple

meanwhile almost all PC makers focus on making the cheapest crap possible with no care for build quality.

That's consumer class laptops only… Look towards business oriented lines
For Dell, it's latitude class, though the typical price tags are a little high.. you can still get them from the Dell Outlet though.

        • I have used a latitude, you are right, they are pretty good. Unfortunately they copied the flat keyboard from apple, and terrible cooling, but otherwise a good machine.

  • How does this compare with Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 14" Ryzen 7 4700U / 16GB DDR4 / 256GB SSD(https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/546515). I'm gonna use it for casual gaming and stuff :)
