Same price as a firestick, whats the appeal?

    • +4

      Firestick is completely different

      • -4

        But superior?

        • Depends what you use it for, imo yes

        • +1

I have both Chromecast and Firestick. Both have pros and cons. The biggest issue for me with Firestick is I can’t cast channel 7 or channel 9

    • Can you stream movies off a phone straight to the firestick like you can with the chromecast?

      • Yes

      • Yet has a remote and an interface, can do games etc etc. A better product… so many negs by CC fan boys.

        • +1

I don't have either I'm just asking so relax.

I'm still using my free telstra TV.

          • @Skinnerr: I wasn't aiming that at anyone it was humor based on the internet humor of blaming all things on fanboys. My seance of humor comes across poorly when written.

        • +1

You could wait for the next Chromecast which should have a remote.

  • +4

It's this a bargain or regular price? Everywhere else is selling for only $2-4 more.

I'm still trying to find anywhere with a sale on the ultra.

    • Regular price and free delivery over $45. Still cheaper than everywhere else. Bought one a couple weeks ago.

    • +2

      Yeah, I don't think it's that great a deal.

I bought an ultra back in 2017 for the same $55.

      • +1

The great jb pricing screw up? I got one too

        • Yeah, this one.

I didn't realise it was a price error, sweet! Still works a treat :)

  • get a Xiaomi Mi Box S.

    • +5

Disagree, Had one and returned it. Wasn't the best and often had Sync issues and delays. Reverted to Chromecast and Rasp Pi for Kodi. Shame as was looking for an All in One.

    • My Xiao Mi works wonderfully - I use a USB to ethernet adapter.

  • +2

A new Chromecast Ultra (codenamed Sabrina) that will run Android TV is rumoured to be coming soon though.

    • Yep. Save your money imo.

    • Looking forward to it especially if it has a dedicated remote as that is then biggest pain to date (for me) with Chromecast from day one.

      • coming when?

  • +3

Jasormart has Chromecast gen 3 for $47.33 with free delivery and ultra black for $79.97 I didn't dare ordering from them so instead i called Officework and try the pricebeat. I told the rep over the phone that jasormart are doing gen 3 for $47.33 and they are based in QLD. OW did the pricebeat i was lucky to get it. Paid $44.96 for it with free DL.

    • +2

I actually did the order for $47.33 (with free delivery) through Jasor Mart - was delivered in 2 days in an Officeworkds package. I'm based in Melbourne.

      • +12

Plot twist: Jasormart isn't even a real store and doesn't have any stock. They list items on their site slightly cheaper than officeworks to avoid too much suspicion. Then when they make a sale, they call officeworks to do a pricematch with customers details and dropship the product straight to the customer. Therefore making a (very) small profit. It's just a theory

        • That was exactly my thought when I saw the officeworks package.

  • Would it be worth upgrading to this if you already have a 2nd gen Chromecast?

    • Depends, does it lack any ability you find you need? Compare those needs with this, and the cost/value ratio to you.

    • If your Chormcast is inconsistent this is probably a good option.

    • 3rd gen is a huge upgrade if you watch sports.

Kayo & Foxtel only stream at 720p on the 2nd gen. 3rd gen is 1080p.

  • This or the fire tv basic stick?
If you respond to this I would like to get the pro/cons.
I personally want the fire tv as I already have Alexa everywhere. Even in the car.
I also own two google minis but they don’t seem to work as well for me.

    • Pros and Cons

I personally prefer Alexa because of the remote and due to being in the Alexa smart home ecosystem. I still have 3 chromecasts

How are you finding Echo Auto? Worth it?

      • +1

Yes I really like it. You can pretty much do everything hands free. Great calls. Music, radio. Also play from your phone music and it has Bluetooth or audio cable.
I can also broadcast to home from the car.

      • Do you know if you can connect from fire stick to an echo stereo setup. I have two echo plus and a echo boom box connected. Would be great if it can do that.

    • I have a few of both, only upside I can see with chromecast is that you can cast to it. Having said that, I don't really cast anything, it 'takes up' the device that's casting and tends to smash its battery.

The firestick, whilst a little restrictive is a 'proper' media device, has a remote, can install apps, YouTube kids etc. Easier for non tech family to use.

My 2 cents, if you don't need or want to cast, get firestick.

      • +2

        What?
Pretty sure that once you use your phone to cast something it just use a bit of resources to act as a remote control. The media streaming will be processed on the Chromecast itself.

Sometimes my phone was low on battery (less than 5%) and I was still able to cast Netflix to my TV, then I would spend hours there.

        • I own about a dozen Android devices, when casting sometimes battery usage is negligible, sometimes noticeable. Depends on device, Android version etc Just my observation basedoonly on empirical evidence, take it or leave it :)

But the main point was my entire non-tech part of the extended family all had a better experience with firestick, and it doesn't 'use up' a phone or whatever when in use.

      • +1

Thanks. I owned a chromecast version one but gave that to my parents a while ago when I upgraded my tv. But I now have a projector and just bought a Firestick for $63. It’s the basic version. I read that I can use the echo setup I have in place for audio so I will reply back with my feedback once I watch a couple of movies about whether I like the fire tv or not.

        • No problem, just my 2 cents.

Not sure why it was down voted, but whatever.

          • @Oxxy: Yeah not sure either.

Anyway feedback. Basic edition doesn’t work with echo setup connectivity.

            So that sucks

          • +1

@Oxxy: I voted you up just then =)

  • +1

I got the Chromecast gen 2 back in 2016 for $8, basically $58 minus $25 x 2 gift vouchers that TGG was handing out for registering your mobile number for SMS marketing, so I am up for an upgrade. Would want the upcoming one if it's running Android TV.

    • +3

It was still $58, you could buy something else and save $50

      • -3

Nop. I needed it at the time so would have paid $58 if I didn't have the free coupons. From a cashflow point of view it was $8 out of pocket.

    • Lmao nice

  • +1

Had been using Chromecast for 3 years. Just switched over to Fire stick 4k and couldn't be happier.

    • But 4K not on in Australia

    • +6

@hbaruas: Well that's fantastic news and am delighted to hear about your happiness. Will pass the word on to others :-)
In the meantime, if you could share the happiness and expand on what caused such joy, I am sure others would also be delighted to also pass on this wonderful news.

      • Typical hive mentality. Spread the joy. I like it..

      • +1

Quite a few reasons.. listing a few of them here:

        • Can access Apple TV content now
        • 4k content for Netflix/ Youtube
        • Can side load different Android apps
        • Being a 4k fire stick, in built Prime Video does not work, but have still managed to sideload Basic Prime Video which works here ( not 4k content though)
        • Access to all of these via remote (other + are Alexa and HDMI-CEC)
        • I believe there is an official android app to control the Fire TV stick using your phone as well
        • Experiencing much better audio now
        • Allows to use VPN as well
        • Can now connect my Bluetooth headphones while watching TV( which does not have BT).

P.S.: I don't care whether you pass on the word to others or not :-)

        • Headphones Bluetooth connection… cool 🤙🏽
I just bought the basic one (Using it for a non 4 k tv and projector)

          • @Mahalo: You can also connect Bluetooth headphones/speakers to Chromecast

            • @Scythic:

You can also connect Bluetooth headphones/speakers to Chromecast

Isn't that for Home not CC??

        • Nice and good to know.
I suppose is not really in the same Apples for Apples class as Chromecast 3. The Firestick 4k are double the price.
Will be interesting to see how the latest Chromecast compares when it gets released. I suspect that will be more a Apples for Apples comparison when the time comes?

          • @Borg: Ok then.. here is the Apples to Apples comparison for you.

Google did release a Chromecast Ultra version which allows 4k casting and I believe costs around $100 too.
IMHO, Fire stick 4k is still a lot better than that !

            • @hbaruas: Its the to be released one (perhaps to be named Ultra 3) which will have a remote along with many other features that I am referring to.

              • @Borg: Chromecast Ultra as of today is $98 and so is the Fire stick 4k.
Not sure whether the to be released Chromecast Ultra 3 will also be in the same price range.

                • @hbaruas: Doubt it. Will probably be closer to $130 (there is my guess) but will be interested what it offers. For me, don't use Apple, dont need 4k, use GoogleHome not Alexa and have nothing associated with Amazon (nor an account). That's just me though. Firestick doesn't have a massive selling point for me as Chromecast 2 meets my needs. For remote, I just say Hey Google, Pause, Play, fast forward 10 min and so on as I have a freebie mini close by.

        • No SBS is a deal_breaker for me.

  • Wouldn’t suggest purchasing, as mentioned on other google posts google soon to announce next generation of casting devices and speakers. Expect to see many more upcoming sales…

    • +2

If talking about "Sabrina" aka potential new Google Chromecast Ultra 3, then it will cost a lot more than $55 and at a guess well over $100. Will no doubt be a long way off. For those that don't own a Chromecast, then this is a reasonable deal regardless.

      • +1

Absolutely, point is just like with any new generation product previous gens go on sale…

  • +1

Is there any reason to upgrade my gen1

    • +1

Biggest reason would be utilising 5ghz network as opposed to the 2.4ghz gens 1 and 2 only use. Obviously this is assuming you have sufficient 5ghz coverage in your home

      • +2

Biggest reason would be utilising 5ghz network as opposed to the 2.4ghz gens 1 and 2 only use

2 supports 5GHz. 3 only adds support for 1080p@60fps plus a little faster (15% apparently, not that you'd notice it anyway)

        • Ahhhh ok, cheers. So not worth an upgrade from 2 to 3?

          • +1

            @MJD91: I wouldn't, but it's worth an upgrade over 1.

    • +1

Gen 1 (which I also own) suffers from some freezing on some Apps like Kayo. Its also slower at getting things running. Gen2 works fine (which I currently use). I suspect Gen 1 which is still great suffers from lack of resources. It works fine for other things. Gen 3 I think is more cosmetic differences over Gen 2 (will stand corrcted). SO if you have the funds and looking for something a bit faster then yes Gen 3 is a step up.

    • I use a gen 1 in our spare room and it's fine. Probably better devices out there now but if this ones doing the job, I'll keep using it.

  • Currently using a Roku has lots of channels and apps including YouTube and Netflix. Can stream YouTube from the phone as well. It has a remote control available from the play store. Can this device offer anything my current device doesn't already have?

  • Suprised by the love for this deal, I have 3 of these and standard price has always been $59, so have just waited for good guys 20% off sale that they have fairly often and picked up for $47 each.

    • I guess its not having to wait + free delivery + price match availability 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • Hey guys! Does anyone know how to fix chromecast from freezing when i mirror cast my website tab?

    • Near impossible to say. Could be Wifi flooding if using it, could be dodgy Chromecast adaptor, could be the device you are casting from and its Wifi….the list is long. Try a different device and see if issue still exists. Try from a PC and see how that goes etc.

      • I got this ages ago it didn't freeze before now it started but it doing the same thing

        • Wonder if the app like Chrome update that causes the issue if using Mirror Cast. Am using Chrome Browser only for example purposes. In turn might not be the Chromecast thats the issue but more to do with compatability with new version of whatever you are using to cast from?

  • i still have GEN2 in my poppy Red colour 💪

  • +1

this new deal is better if you can return your Kmart one

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/552014

    • Haha dammit I dont have the auspost box anymore. I wonder if theyd accept my ripped chromecast box + online receipt
