Always try to get Aussie olive oil over Spanish olive oil so will stock up on a few of these.

      Don't stock up.
I was disappointed with this oil. Very "flat" and flavour lacking.

Cobram is superior to this by miles and Cobram is not the best Australian EVOO.

Which would you say is the best Australian EVOO?

        • +1

I personally prefer cobram over this one, but only buy whichever half price :) also keen to know other brands

          • @frogduck: There would be at least 20 - 30 Australian olive oils better than Cobram (eg, Mount Zero), but you won't find them in Coles or Woolworths, and they'll cost more that full price Cobram.

I think Cobram make Red Island. Cheaper version?

      • +2

Agree Cobram tastes way better, personally I find Red Island a bit spicy.

      • cobram robust is my preferred very strong flavour …..

Personally love this oil. I know most people say Cobram is better, but having tried both I like Red Island more.

I was the same, always wanting to support Australian producers but honestly, when you compare the Bertolli (Italian), it shits all over the stuff here. All the Aussie stuff just simply can't compete.

Same with our tinned tomatoes. All the aussie stuff is lacking flavour so they throw additivies in them (or they leave them bland).
You compare it to Mutti (italian) and that stuff's just pure italian tomato at its ripest. It's just miles ahead.

Support aussie produce where it deserves to be supported. If we're producing crap i don't see why I should have to support that?

Bit like that old chestnut of Peroni beer and Stella Artois. Compare it to the actual overseas stuff and it tastes completely different. Same recipe but the stuff grown here just doesn't taste the same in our climate/soil.

Red Island to me, has a 'punchier' flavour, but Cobram Estate
tastes more refined & sophisticated out of these 2 x brands.

    • cobras makes 3 levels of flavour intensity so depends which one you mean.

      • i like the 'strongest' flavour of the Cobram Estate.
so, i was comparing this 'strong' flavour of Cobram Estate and Red Island.

  • One of the best rated olive oils in the Choice review

  • Good for bulking.

    1 cup is 2000 cals.

My PT drinks this stuff. Not joking. It’s actually good for you!

    • +1

not so much good for you as not as bad as some other oils which are heated or naturally high in saturated fat or hydrogenated (heat treated) oils such as margarine, hence “cold pressed extra virgin olive oil” as the healthier alternative.

the amount of olive oil you need to consume to lower cholesterol is offset against the weight gain. some people freeze olive oil so that they can spread it thin like margarine.

      • Freezing it to spread is a novel idea!

    • if drink this without exercise… will gain weight ?

  • How does Aldi Aussie EVOO compare against this and Cobram? About 9 bucks a litre every day.

  • Ah —- $16 when I tried the link or direct, I guess that it starts tomorrow! Thanks.

I recommend keeping the bottle and refilling it with whatever EVOO you prefer. The bottle is a great size and attractive and because it is dark it reduces oxidation of the oil.

  • Is it worth getting this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/550751 today and then this on the weekend and seeing which is better? Currently I just use the cheap canola oil to cook everything. I have never though of oil introducing flavor to a dish and just used it as a lubricant for the pan.

    Am I broken or what?

    • not sure if evoo is for cooking … depends what type of cooking

    • EVOO is more expensive so most of your cooking will be done with canola. You can get by cooking with just canola. In your case i would only use EVOO if the recipe states it explicitly. EVOO is great for dressing because you're going to get that flavour profile. For cooking just stick to the recipe or what you know.
