I got a Vivobook 2 years ago which looks the same (8250u CPU), into which I installed an M2 SSD. I love it. It is quite lightweight, the screen is great and bright, and the fingerprint sensor works well. Keyboard not the best, but at this price…. Another plus is the charger, which is very small and light.

got the same one and still works like a charm. only thing i didnt like was the vga cam instead of hd but it gets all the basic documents and web browsing done

      • +1

Yeah, the camera is beyond crappy. As good as the one from my 2011 netbook.

Another plus is the charger, which is very small and light.

Do they provide US charger with adaptor or AU charger?

      • +1

US. Charger is 1 with the plus, so you cannot swap cables. I use it with a Xiaomi power strip, which accepts US plug.

        • Sounds like the same as the one piece chargers that come with lower end Lenovos too.

looks like it's 4GB soldered RAM + one 4GB DIMM

    • that sucks if we need to upgrade the ram

      wish they didn't do this..

      • You can upgrade DIMM ram though right?

        • of course…
but you lose dual channel benefits etc..

          • +2

@pinkybrain: If it's just being used for basic tasks there's really not that much difference performance-wise. Benchmarks show a negligible drop in gaming performance (<1%). Only things like design work, video editing, etc… show a noticeable difference.

            • @BinaryPirate: But is it worth to upgrade one slot to 8Gb (it would be 4gb + 8 gb)? Many thanks. And may push my luck if you would share your opinion abou this versus Swift 5 on special in Harvey Norman?
              Many thanks

              • @Edsanwong: All I could find on the Acer is it has 1x8 SO-DIMM. Reviews say it'll take up to 16 but you'd need to confirm.

I can't really do a this vs that comparison because I have nfi what you'll be doing with it.

the bazel is thiner than those $1000+ laptop

    • Way thinner than my Lenovo 14" laptop, while the screen is much brighter.

  • I like the vivobook

I dont tend to find 8GB RAM + 256GB disk enough for me though. Surprised anyone does really actually

    • does this support a normal sata SSD as well?

    • +2

For ordinary office work, web browsing, media and all the other things this is designed for, this CPU with 8 GB RAM & SSD is plenty.
Right now I'm running on lesser specs with about a dozen web tabs, a few office documents and a virtual machine running in the background and having no trouble at all.
If you're getting grind on these kinds of specs either you're doing more advanced work - so you need more advanced specs - or you've got something going very wrong somewhere.

It's HD display. Amazon one is FullHD

  • How's Ryzen 3000 mobile? I know 4000 is really good but I'm not sure if 3000 is garbage or just on par with Intel.

    • Not on par with Intel but not garbage … the 4000 (zen2) series are a massive leap though so i'd look out for those instead.

      • Yeah I'd wait for a Thinkpad to get around this price point, not really interested in ASUS' low end stuff. The display despite being FHD is not IPS (they don't mention it, and a review states it is not), build quality has been shit to me in the past and the battery life won't be half as good as the Ryzen 4000 offerings which are now on 7nm.

    • +1

      Very respectable.

      https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Ryzen+5+3500U&i…

That's realistically twice the power you'd need for 'ordinary' office/ web/ media usage.

  • Perfect for gaming laptop?

    • +1

The CPU is great but you'd get 'light gaming' performance out of the GPU. Depends on what games you play.

      • CS Go per se?

      • Can it proply play GTA5?

  • Definitely read the comprehensive review by William D. on Amazon before purchasing this laptop.

    • +1

      tldr; bad screen

    • mind to share the review link??

      • Click the 'Go to Deal' link for the laptop and then scroll down to the bottom of the page - it's the top review.

Can we really call Vega 8 'discrete' graphics? They are great for the price but still part of a SoC I believe.

I have a Thinkpad with the 3500U, it's a nice laptop. Some light gaming, even runs CoD: Warzone.

    • +2

Definitely an integrated graphics. Misleading advertising.

  • how does vega 8 compare against say gtx1650?

  • Yeah i would rather pay a bit more and get something more recent.

  • Can this laptop be charged via usb C port?

Had a read but can't see a mention of that.

  • No IPS screen? It doesn't mention IPS anywhere as far as I can see, and there are conflicting reviews. Some say crappy TFT while others say IPS or IPS 'like'. The spec information would specifically say IPS if it were. No way they'd not mention it as that's an important feature to market.

  • How does this compete with the Lenovo thinkpad e495 at $850?
